A WARNING
-The rain sensor is only intended to assist
the driver. The driver is still responsible
for manually switching the w ipers on ac­
cording to the v is ibility conditions.
- The windshield may not be treated w ith
water-repe lling windshie ld coat ing
agents. Unfavorable conditions, such as
wetness, darkness or low sun, can result in increased glare. W iper blade chatter is
also possible.
- Properly functioning windshie ld w iper
blades are required for a clear view and
sa fe driving

- In case of frost, make sure the wind­ shield wiper blades are not frozen to the
windshield. Sw itching on the windshield
wipers when the blades are frozen to the
windshield can damage the wiper blades.
- Prior to using a car wash, the windshield
wiper system must be switched off (lever
in position 0). This prevents unintention­
al sw itching on and damage to the wind­
shield wiper system.
- Do not use the wipers to remove ice from
the windows. Using windshield wipers as
ice scrapers destroys the wiper blades.
{D Tips
- The windshield wipers switch off when
the ignition is turned off. You can acti­
vate the w indshield wipe rs after the igni­
tion is switched back on by moving the
windsh ield wiper leve r to any pos ition.
- Worn or dirty windsh ield wiper blades
result in streaking. Th is can affect the
rain sensor function. Check your w ind­
s h ield wiper blades regularly.
- The washer fluid nozzles in the w ind­
shield washer system are heated* at low
temperatures when the ignit ion is on.
- When stopping temporarily, such as at a
traff ic light, the speed of the windsh ield wipers automatically reduces by one
lev­
el.
- In vehicles with an MMI, you can switch
the rain sensor or off in the
Driver a ssi s­

menu.
Cleaning windshield wiper blades
Clean the wiper blades when you see wiper
streaks . Use a soft cloth and a glass cleaner .

In recirculation mode, the air inside the vehi ­
cle is circu lated and filtered. This prevents the
unfiltered air outside the vehicle from enter­ ing the vehicle inter ior. We recommend
switch ing recirculation mode on when driving
through a tunnel or when sitt ing in traffic

We re commend pressing the IAU TO I button
and setting the temperature to 72

The automatic climate control system auto­
matica lly ma inta ins a temperature once it has
been set. The temperature of the air from the
vents, the b lower speed, and air distribution
are also automat ically adju sted . In all heat ing
mode funct ions except
defrost, the blower
only switches to a h igher speed once the en­
g ine coolant has reached a certa in tempera­
ture . Recirculation mode is switched off in the de­
frost setting ~-
.&_ WARNING
-You shou ld not use the recirculation mode
for an extended period s ince no fresh air is
drawn in. With the air-conditioning*
switched off, the w indows can fog up,
which increases the risk of an acc ident .
IA/ Cl Switching th e cooling mode on and
off
T he cooling system is turned on and off with
the
IA/C l button. The air is not coo led and hu­
mid ity is not removed when cooling mode is
switched off . This can cause fog on the win­
dows . The cooli ng mode switches off auto ­
matically i n cold outside temperatu res (be low
32 °F / 0 °() .
IAUTOI Switch ing automatic mode on and
off
The automatic mode is turned on using the
IAUTOI button . AUTO mode switches off once
a b utton in the climate control system is
pressed. Automatic mode maintains a con­
sta nt temperature ins ide the ve hicle . Air tem­
perature, airflow and air d istribution are con­
trolled automatically . When automatic mode
is active, pressing the
IAU TO I button briefly IJJ,-

Emergency braking function
This is used if the conventional brake system
fails or locks up.

cele rate, the braking p rocess stops.
Pulling and holding the @switch while driv­
in g at a speed of about 2 mph (3 km/h) or
h igher in itiates the emergency b rak ing func­
tion . The vehi cle is braked at all fou r whee ls
by activat ing the brak ing hydrau lics. The brake
performance is s imilar to heavy bra ki ng. ¢.&.
To help prevent act ivat ing the emergency
b rak ing by mis take, an audib le wa rning tone
(b uzzer) sounds when the @switch is pulled.
E me rgency braking s tops as soo n as the @
switch is released or the accelerator peda l is
p ressed.
&_ WARNING
Emergency braking shou ld only be used in
an emergency, when the normal brake
pedal has failed or the brake pedal is ob­
structed . Du ring emergency braking, your
vehicle will brake similar to heavy braking.
ESC and the assoc iated components (ABS,
ASR, EDL) cannot overcome the laws of
physics. In corners and w hen road or
weather conditions are bad, a full brake
application can cause the vehicle to skid or
the rear end to b reak away, which increas­
es the risk of an acc ident.
Hill hold
Applies to vehicles: with H ill Hold
Hill hold makes it easier to start on hills .
Requirement: The driver door must be closed
and the engine must be r unning .
The system is act iva ted when the brake pedal
i s pressed wh ile the veh icle is s ta tionary .
To prevent the vehicle from ro ll ing back when
start ing , the bra ke power is he ld for a br ief moment afte
r releasing the brake pedal. D ur­
ing t his time, you can easi ly begin to move
you r vehicle .

-The intelligent technology of Hi ll Hold
cannot overcome the limitations im­ posed by natural physical laws . The in­
creased comfort offered by H ill Hold
should not cause you to take safety r is ks.
- Hill Hold cannot hold the vehicle in all
h ill sta rt situations (fo r example, if the
g round is slippery o r icy).
- If you do not beg in moving immediately
after releasing the brake pedal, the vehi­
cle could begi n to roll ba ckward unde r
certain ci rc u ms tances. Press the brake
pedal or set the pa rk ing brake immedi­
ately.
- If the eng ine "stalls", press the b ra ke
pedal or set the pa rking brake immedi ­
ately.
- Starting on inclines in stop-and-go t ra f­
fic: To help prevent the vehicle from ro ll­
in g back when starting, press and ho ld
the brake pedal fo r several seconds when
the vehicle is stationary.

Speed warning system
Introduction
The speed warning system helps you to stay
under a specified maximum speed .
The speed warning system war ns you if you
are exceeding the maximum speed that you
have set . You will hear a warning tone when
yo ur speed exceeds the stored value by ap­
proximate ly 3 mph (3 km/h). The . (U SA
models)/ . (Canada models) ind icator light
and the message
Speed limit e xceeded! ap­
pear in the instrument cluster display at the

Audi adaptive cruise control
Introduction
App lies to vehicles: with Audi adaptive cruise control
The adaptive cruise control system is a com bi·
nation of speed and distance regulation. It as ­
sists the dr iver by both regulat ing the speed
and maintain ing a distance to the object
ahead, within the abilities of the system. If
the system detects an object, adaptive cru ise
control can brake and acce le rate your ve hicle.
This makes driving more comfortable both on l ong stretches of highway and in stop-and -go
traffic.

obstructions as it may impair the function of
the adaptive cruise contro l and the pre sense

objects that are a short d istance ahead, off
to the side of your vehicle or moving into
your lane.
- Objects that are difficult to detect such as
motorcycles, veh icles with high ground
clearance or an overhanging load are detect­
ed late or not detected at all.

Always pay attent ion to traffic when adap­
tive cruise control is switched on and the

- For safety reasons, do not use adaptive
cru ise contro l when driv ing o n roads with
many curves, when the road s urface is in
poor condition and/or in bad weather
(such as ice, fog, grave l, heavy ra in and
hydroplaning). Using the system unde r
these co ndit ions co uld res ult in a coll i­
sion.
- Sw itch adaptive cru ise cont ro l off tempo·
ra rily whe n driving in tu rni ng lanes, o n
expressway ex its or in construction
zones. T his preven ts the vehicle from ac ­
celerating to the se t speed when in t hese
situations .
- Th e adap tive cruise control system

• To increase or reduce the distance in incre­
ments, tap the switch again to the right or
left . The distance between the two vehicles
will change in the instrument cluster dis­
play.
When approaching an object detected ahead,
the adaptive cruise con trol system brakes to
match that object's speed and then reg ulates
to the stored distance . If the object detected
ahead acce lerates, adapt ive cruise control will
a lso acce lerate up to the stored speed .
The highe r the speed, the greater the distance
in meters

ommended. That is equal to the general rec- ommendation of "hal
f the speed shown on
the speedometer".
T he distances provided are example values.
Depending on the driv ing s ituation, the cur­
rent speed and the way the object detected
ahead is driving, the actual distance may be

common sense and select a distance to

Applies to vehicles: with Audi pre se nse basic or Aud i pre
sense front
W ithin the limits of the system, pre sense ba­
sic and pre sense front can initiate steps to
protect vehicle occupants in certa in danger­
ous situations.
Critical driving situat ions can be recognized by
the pre sense front via a network of different
veh icle systems and can take steps to prepare
the vehicle occupants for a potentia l co llision.
The pre sense front wo rks with a radar sensor
and a video camera*.
It also functions within
the limits of the system when adaptive cruise
control* is switched off.

Audi pre sense basic
Description
Applies to vehicles : with Audi pre se nse basic
The function of the pre sense basic is activat­
ed at a speed of 20 mph (30 km/h) or higher.
The following functions can be triggered un­
der certain conditions within the limits of the
system:
- T ensioning of the safety be lts (for example,
during heavy braking) : The front safety belts
have reversible belt pretensioners. If a colli­
s ion does not occur, the safety belts loosen
slight ly and are ready to trigger again .
- Closing the windows (for example, if under­
or oversteering): The windows close until
there is only a small gap open.

Audi drive select: The dep loyment time is
adapted in dynamic mode.
A WARNING
The pre sense basic cannot overcome natu­ ral physical laws. It is a system designed to
assist and it cannot prevent a collis ion. Do
not let the increased safety provided
tempt you into taking risks. This could in­
crease your r isk of a collis ion.
- The system can deploy incorrectly due to
system-specific limits.

- Certa in pre sense bas ic functions switch
off when ESC is switched off (sport
mode) or when dr iving in reverse.
- The pre sense basic functions may not be
available if there is a ma lfunction in the
ESC system or the airbag control mod­
ule.
- Note that with pre sense bas ic, the rever­
sible safety belt pretensioner on the
front passenger's side deactivates when
t he fron t passenger's airbag is deactivat­
ed.
Audi pre sense front
Description
Applies to vehicles : wit h Audi pre sense front or Audi
adaptive crui se con trol
Pre sense front informs you if the distance to
the vehicle ahead falls below the safe distance
for an extended period of time. It can warn of
a possible collision and initiate braking ma­ neuvers, within the limits of the system.
When detected in time, the system can assess
dangerous situat ions where an object ahead
brakes suddenly or if your own veh icle is trav­
el ing at a high speed and approaching an ob ­
ject that is moving more slow ly . If detection is
not poss ible, then pre sense front does not re­
act.

The proper driver seating position is impor­
tant for safe, relaxed driving .

For your own safety and to reduce the risk of
injury in the event of an accident, we recom­
mend that you adjust the driver's seat to the
follow ing position:
.. Adjust the driver's seat so that you can easi ­
ly push the pedals all the way to the floor
wh ile keeping your knee(s) slightly bent

.. Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is
in an upr ight position so that your back
comes in full contact w ith it when you drive.
.. Adjust the steering wheel so that th ere is a
distance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) be­
