(D Tips
For up to 10 minutes after stopping the en ­
gine, the rad iator fan may tu rn on again auto­
matically or it may continue to run (even if
the is ignit ion sw itched off) due to the follow­
ing reasons :
- The coolant temperat ure is increasing due
to trapped heat.
- If the engine is warm and the engine com­ partment also heats up from strong sun ­
li ght .
Messages
Engine runn ing. Warn ing! Turn off ignition be ­
fore leaving vehicle
This message appea rs and a warn ing tone sounds
if you open the driver's door when the engine is
running.
Pressing start/ stop button again will switch off
engine.
T his message appe ars when you press t he
I START ENGI NE STOP I* button wh ile driving

This message appea rs if the re is no co nvenience
key inside the vehicle or if the system does no t
re cog nize the key. The conve nien ce key may not
be recogn ized, for ex ample, if it is cove red by a n
objec t that
disrupts the s ignal (s uch as a b rief ­
case), o r if the key batte ry is weak . Elect ronic de­
vices s uch as cell phones can also interfere w it h
the s ignal.

appears if the convenience key was removed from
the ve hicle when the e ngine was ru nning . If the
convenience key is no longe r in the veh icle, yo u
cannot sw itch the igni tion on or sta rt the eng ine
o nc e you stop it. You also canno t lo ck t he vehicle
from the o utside.

engine or if you have switched the Start/Stop sys­
tem off manually, the ignition will not be auto ­
mat ically switched off and the engine w ill contin­
ue to run

the engine to run in confined spaces.
{!) Tips
If you select the D or N se lector lever position
in a vehicle with an automat ic transmission
after sh ift ing into reverse, the vehicle m ust
be driven fas ter than 6 m ph (10 km/h) in or­
de r fo r the e ngine to switch off again.
Manually switching the Start/Stop system
on/off
Applies to: vehicles with Sta rt/Stop system
If you do not wish to use the system, you can
switch it off manually.

If you switch the system off during a stop

parking brake

-Occasional noises when the park ing brake is
set and re leased are normal and are not a
cause for concern .
-The parking brake goes through a se lf-test
cycle at regular intervals when the vehicle is
stopped. Any noises associated w ith this are
normal.
-If there is a power failure, the parking brake
will not set if it is released, and it will not
release if it is
set¢,&.. See an author ized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Fa­
cility for assistance.
Starting from a stop
Various convenience and safety functions may be
ava ilable when the vehicle begins dr iv ing, de­
pending on vehicle equipment .
Starting on hills with the parking brake set
Requirement: the driver's door must be closed.
.,. To start driving comfortab ly when on a hill, set
the parking brake and begin driving as usual.
The braking force of the parking brake does not
release automatically until the wheels build up
enough driving force .
Starting on hills with hill hold assist
Hill hold assist makes it easier to start on hills.
Requirement: the driver's door must be closed
and the eng ine must be r unning.
.,. To activate hill hold assist, press and hold the
brake pedal for several seconds . The vehicle
must be in an uph ill direction of travel.
After releasing the brake pedal, the braking pow ­
er is ma inta ined for a br ief
moment ¢,& to pre­
vent the vehicle from rolling back when starting.
During this time, you can easily beg in to move
your veh icle.
Driving
A WARNING
Applies to: ve hicles with h ill ho ld assist
-I f you do not beg in driving immediate ly or
the engine stalls afte r releasing the brake
pedal, your veh icle may begin to roll back­
ward. Press the brake pedal or set the park­
ing brake immediately.
-The intelligent technology of hill hold assist
cannot overcome the limitations imposed by
natural physica l laws. The increased comfort
offered by hill hold assist should not cause
you to take safety risks.
-Hill hold assist cannot hold the vehicle in
p lace on a ll hills (for example, if the ground
is slippery or icy).
-To reduce the risk of an accident, always make sure the veh icle is situated safely
while stationary.
Automatic transmission
Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with automatic transmissions
T he automatic transmission is controlled elec­
tronically . Upshifting and downshifting occur au­
tomatica lly .
When a
moderate driving style is used, the
transm ission selects the most economica l dr iv ing
mode. The transmission upshifts at a lower RPM
and downshifts at a higher RPM to improve fue l
efficiency.
In the S selector leve r pos ition, the transmission
switches to a sporty mode after a kick-down or
when the driver uses a
sporty driving style char­
acterized by quick accelerator pedal movements,
heavy acce leration , frequent changes in speed
and traveling at the maximum speed.
If desired, the driver can also select the gea rs
manually (tiptronic mode) ¢ page 90, Manual
shifting (tiptronic mode).
The S tron ic is a dual-clutch transmission. Power
is transferred using two clutches that work inde ­
pendent ly from one another. They rep lace the
torque converter used in conventional automatic

Starting the engine
• Se lect the P or N selec to r l ever posit ion. At low
temperat ures (below
14 °F (- 10 °C)), the en­
gine can on ly be star ted when the selector lever
is in the P position.
Starting from a stop
• Press and hold the brake pedal.
• Press and hold the interlock button in these­
l ector lever handle, se lect the des ired selector
lever posit io n such as D
c::> page 86 and release
the lock button.
• Wait a moment unti l the transmission shifts.
You w ill notice a slight movement when the
gear engages.
• Release the brake pedal and press the accelera-
tor pedal

Various convenience functions are ava ilab le for
starting on hills

Stopping temporarily
• Keep the veh icle stationary using the b raking
peda l, for example at traffic lights.
• Do not press the accelerator pedal when doing
th is.
• To prevent the vehicle from rolling when you
start driving, set the park ing brake when stop­
ping on steep hills
c::> .& and c::> 0.
• The park ing brake w ill release automatically
and t he veh icle wi ll sta rt moving on ce you press
the accelerator pedal. Req uirement: the driv ­
er's door m ust be closed.

Stopping/parking
If the sele ctor lever is not in the P position w hen
you open the driver's door, the vehicle cou ld roll.
In vehicles with a conven ience key *, the following
message appears:
Shift to P , vehicle can roll
away . Doors can only be locked in P.
A warning
tone w ill also sound.
• Press and hold the brake peda l c::> A.
• Set the parking brake.
• Select the P selector lever posit ion.
U nder certai n circumstances, (such as driving in
t h e mountains or towing a trai ler), it may be use ­
ful to switch temporar ily to the manual shift pro­
gram in order to ad just the gears to the driving
cond it ions by hand
c:::> page 90.
When park ing o n a level sur face, s imply place the
se lector lever in the P position . On inclines, acti­
vate the parking brake first and then move the
selector lever to the P pos ition
c:::> page 83 . This
prevents the locking mechanism from being
loaded too heavily and will make it easier to
move the selec tor lever o ut of the P posi tion.
.&_ WARNING
- The vehicle can ro ll even whe n the engi ne is
sw itche d off.
- Unin ten ded vehicle movement can lead to
s e rio us inju ries.
- Never leav e your ve hicle w ith th e engine
r u nning w hile in gear.
If you mus t leave
your veh icle when the eng ine is r unning, se t
the par king brake and move the se lector lev­
er to the P position .
- P owe r is s till tran sfer red to the whee ls
when t he engine is runn ing at idle. To pre ­
vent the vehicle f rom "creeping", yo u m ust
keep your foot on t he brake when the en­
gine is running and the se lector lever is in
the D, So r R position or "tiptronic" mode is
selected.
- Do not inadvertently press the accelerator
pedal when the vehicle is stationa ry. Ot her ­
w ise the veh icle will start to move immed i­
ately, even if the parking b ra ke is set. T his
c o uld result in a c rash.

Driving
Manual shifting (tiptronic mode)
Applies to: vehicles w ith a utomat ic t ransm iss io ns
The tiptronic mode allows the driver to shift the
gears manually .

Shifting with the selector lever
You can sh ift into tiptronic mode while stationary
and while driv ing.
.. To sh ift into tiptronic mode , pus h the selector
lever from the D/S setting to the r ight in the
tiptronic sh ift gate. Once the transmission has
swi tched modes, the se lec tor lever posi tion
M
is shown in the instrument cluster display
¢ page 86, fig. 95. For example M4 , means the
4th gear is engaged .

Shifting with the shift paddle s*
You can operate the shift padd les in the D/S or M
(tiptronic shift gate) selector lever positions.

If the shif t paddles a re tapped w hile i n the D/S
selector lever position, a utomatic mode switches
off briefly . To switch from manually shifting back
to automatic shifting immediately, tap t he sh ift

To keep sh ifting us ing the shift padd les, move
the selector lever to the right out of the D/S posi­
tion into the tiptronic shift gate .
The tr ansmission a utomatica lly shi fts up or dow n
before critical engi ne speed is reached.
The transmission on ly allows manual shifting
whe n the engi ne speed is w ith in the pe rmitted
range.

tiptro nic does not wo rk if the transmiss ion i s
r unning in emergency mode .
Kick-down
Applies to : vehicles wi th auto matic transm issions
Kick -down enables maximum acceleration.
When you p ress the accelerator pedal down be ­
yond the res istance point (ca lled kick-down), the
automat ic transmission downshifts into a lower
gear, depending on vehicle speed and engi ne
R PM .
It shi fts up in to the next higher ge ar once
the maxim um specified eng ine RPM is reached .
A WARNING ,._
Please note that the whee ls could spin on
slick or slippe ry roads when kick-down is ac­
tive.
Launch control program
App lies to: vehicles with S t ronic transmiss ion an d Launch
Co ntro l P rogram
The Laun ch Control Program enabl es maximum
acceleration.
The Launch Contro l Program is not ava ilable for
all eng ine/transmission combinations .

Starting/driving the vehicle
Applies to: ve hicles w ith plug -in hybrid drive
The vehicle is started and stopped with the
I START STOP I button. Please also read the in ­
formation under
c::> page 78, Starting the engine .
Establishing drive ready mode
See c::> A in Introduction on page 94.
Requirement: a charging cable must not be con­
nected to the vehicle
c::> page 117 and the selec­
tor lever must be in the P or N position.
- Press the brake pedal.
- Press the
I STAR T STOPI button .
When the vehicle enters drive ready mode, the
status message
e-tron READY appears briefly in
the instrument cluster display and the needle in
the power meter points to
READY c::> page 97.
Driving
The vehicle starts with the electric motor after
establishing the dr ive ready mode and if the con­
ditions for electric drive mode have been met
c::> page 100.
The conditions to drive are essentially the same
as for the automatic transmission
c::> page 85 .
You and your passengers should anticipate the
possibility of a sporty acce leration.
Ending drive ready mode
- Place the selector lever in the P position.
- Switch the ignition off with the
I STAR T STOPI
button.
Vehicle sound
The vehicle generates an electronic engine sound
so that your vehicle can be heard from the out­
side when in electr ic drive mode. The veh icle
sound automatically fades out at higher speeds
when the sounds from the tires and wind start in­
creasing.

Switching the ignition on/off
You can switch the ignition on without establish­
ing drive ready mode.
- Press the
I START STOP ! button to switch the
ign ition on and off. Do not press the brake ped­
al whi le doing this.
When the ignition is sw itched on, the needle
points at
OFF @c::>page 97, fig. 103 or OFF is
displayed @c::>page97, fig .103.
No indicator lights stay turned on when the igni ­
tion is switched off .
Ignition is switched off automatically
To prevent the vehicle battery from draining, the
ignition will switch off automatically under the
follow ing cond it ions:
- The vehicle must have already been driven.
- The vehicle is stationary.
- The gasoline engine must not be runn ing .
- The driver's door must be open.
- The driver's safety belt must be unbuckled .
- The brake pedal must not be pressed.
In this case, the activated low beam is replaced
by the parking light. The message
Side marker
lights automatically shut off in
30 minutes. See
owner's manual
appears in the instrument clus­
ter display . The parking lights w ill switch off af­
ter approx imately 30 minutes or when you lock
the veh icle.
If the gasoline engine was not stopped, the mo­
tor continues runn ing and the ignit ion does not
automat ica lly switch off

- In some sit uations, rea r cross-traffic assist
may warn yo u even if there is no cross traffic

i nto a parki ng space or ma neuver ing.
- The rea r cross-traffic ass ist also switches off
whe n you switch off the ESC.
- The rea r cross traffic assist switches on and

If t he side assist switches off automatically, a

The system can not guarantee that it wi ll detect
ve hicles co rrectly and it has switched off. The
sensors have been moved o r are faulty. Have t he
system checked by an authorized Audi dea ler or
author ized Audi Service Facility soon .

Assistance systems
Sid e ass ist swi tches off automatically a fter a
s h ort time when a factory -insta lled tra ile r h itch
i s connected to the e lectrica l connecto r on the
t railer . T here is no gua rantee the system will
switch off when using a retrofitted trailer h itch.
Do not use side assist when tow ing a trailer .
Ill Rear parking aid : obstacle detection restrict­
ed
T he rea r cross -tra ffic ass is t is not available. Ei­
t h er th e ESC is sw itched off, or the rada r senso rs
may be cove red by a bike rack, st icke rs, leaves,
snow o r other objects. Switch the ESC on, or
clean the area in front of the senso rs if necessa ry
q page 140, fig . 147. If t his message continues
to be displayed , dr ive immed ia tely to a n author­
iz ed Audi dea ler or author ized Audi S ervic e Facili­
ty to ha ve the m alfunc tion re paire d.

Audi dr ive select makes it poss ible to experience
diffe rent types of vehicle settings in one vehicle.
T he dr iver can select from three modes,
Comfort ,
Auto
and Dynamic , using t he r:;~, bu tton in the
c en te r c onsole o r by usin g the Info ta in m ent sys­
te m. T hi s a llow s yo u t o swi tch between a sporty
and a com fo rt ab le driv ing mode, fo r ex am ple. In
t h e
Individual* mode , the settin gs ca n be adjus t­
ed to yo ur persona l preferences . T his makes it
p oss ible to com bine settings such as a spo rty en­
gine setting with light steer ing.

vehicle's features. However, the eng ine a nd
stee ring are always affec ted .
Engine and automatic transmission
Depend ing on the mode, the engine an d auto­
matic transm ission* respond more q uickly o r in a
more ba la nced manner to acce lerato r pedal
movements . In the sporty dynam ic mode, th e
t ransm iss io n shifts at higher spe ed ranges .
