-If the indicato r light a nd the message appear
when the vehi cle is st ationary or aft er sw itch­
ing the ignition on ,
check if you can release the
parking brake . If you cannot re lease the park­
i ng brake, see yo ur authorized Aud i dea ler or
authori zed Aud i Serv ice Facility . If you can re­
lease the park ing brake and the message still
appears , see an authorized Audi dealer or au ­
thorized Aud i Serv ice Facility immediately to
have the malfunction corrected .
-If the indicator light and message appear w hile
driving ,
the hill start assist or emergency brak ­
ing function may be malfunctioning .
It may not
be possib le to set the pa rking brake or release
it once it has been set. Do not pa rk your veh icle
on h ills. See an author ized Audi dealer or au ­
thorized Audi Serv ice Facility fo r ass istance .
Brake servo: re strict ed . You can continue driv ­

There is a malfunction in the brake booster . The
brake booster is available, but its effectiveness is
reduced . Braking behav ior may be diffe rent from
how it no rma lly fu nctions and t he b rake pedal
may v ibrate .

Aud i Serv ice Facility immediately to have the
malfunct io n corrected.

- Read and follow the warn ings in
¢ page 304, Working in the engine com­
partment
before opening the hood and
check ing the brake fl uid level.
- If the brake system indicator light does no t
turn off o r it turns on while driving, the
brake fluid level in the reservoir is too low,
and this increases the risk of an accident.
Stop the vehicle and do not continue dr iv-

ing . See an autho rized Audi dea ler or au­
thorized A udi Service Fac ility for assistance.
- If the brake system indicator light turns on
together w ith the ABS and ESC indicator
lights, the ABS/ESC regu lating function may
be malfunct ion ing. Functions that stabilize
the vehicle are no longer available . This
could cause the vehicle to swerve, which in­
creases the risk that the vehicle will slide. Do not co ntin ue d rivi ng. See an autho rized
Aud i dea le r or a ut horized Audi Serv ice Facili­
ty fo r ass istance .
PARK/<®)/!®)' Electromechanical parking
brake
If the -(USA mode ls) I. (Canada models)
i ndicator l ight turns on, the parking brake was
set .
If the -(USA mode ls)/ . (Canada models) in­
dicator light blinks, the braking force is not build­
i ng up enough or not building up at a ll. Se lect the
P selector lever posit ion to help secure the vehi­
cle. Make sure the indicator light is off before you
start driving .

There is a ma lf u nction in the parking brake. Drive
to an authorized Aud i dea ler or authorized Audi
Service Facility immediate ly to have the malfunc­
tion corrected.

brake: caution! Vehicle parked too steep
There is not eno ugh braking force to ho ld the ve ­
hicle in p lace . T he brakes have overheated. The
vehicle could roll away even on a small incline.

The coolant level is too low.
Do not continue driving and switch the engine
off. Check the coolant level ¢
page 310.
-If the coolant leve l is too low, add coolant
~ page 310. Only continue driv ing once the in­
dicator light turns off.
• Coolant temperature : to o high . Let engine
run with vehicle s tati onar y
Let the eng ine run at idle for a few minutes to
cool off, until the ind icator light tu rns off.
- If the indicator light does not turn off, do not continue driving the vehicle. See an author ized
Audi dealer or author ized A udi Se rvice Facility
for assistance.
_& WARNING
- Never open the hood if you ca n see or hear
steam o r coolant escaping from the engine
compartment. This increases the risk of
burns . Wait until you no longer see or hear
steam or coolant escap ing .
- The engine compartment in any veh icle can
be a dangerous area. Stop the engine and
allow it to cool before working in the engine
compartment. A lways follow the informa­
t io n found in
¢ page 304, Working in the
engine compartment.

and front passenger's safety belts are fastened .

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operating
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

"'To release the parking brake, press the brake or
accelerator pedal while the ignition is switched
on and press the button at the same time(®).
The LED in the button and the indicator light in
the display turn off.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electromechani­
cal parking brake . The parking brake is designed
to prevent the vehicle from rolling unintentional­
l y and replaces the hand brake .
In addition to the normal functions of a tradi­
tional hand brake, the electromechanical parking brake provides various convenience and safety
functions .

- Do not press the acce lerator pedal inadver-
tently when the vehicle is stationary, the en­
gine is running and a gear is selected. Oth­
erwise, the vehicle will start to move imme­
diate ly and this could result in an accident .
- If the power supply fails, you cannot set the
parking brake if it is released . In this case,
park the veh icle on leve l ground and secure
it by p lac ing the selector leve r in the P posi­
tion. See an authorized A udi dealer or au ­
thorized A udi Se rvice Fa cil ity for assis tance.

- Occasional noises when the parking brake is
set and released are normal and are not a
cause fo r concern.
- The pa rking brake goes through a self-test
cy cle at regu lar inte rvals when the vehicle is
stopped . Any no ises asso ciated wi th th is are
normal.
- If there is a powe r failure, the parki ng brake
canno t be set if it is rele ased, and i t will not
re lease if it is set ~& . See an a uthorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Fa­
cility for assistance.
- If the parking brake is malfunctioning, the
LED in the
C® button blinks . It may not be
possible to set the parking brake . If the
park ing brake is set, use the hill start assist
to release it

plies particularly when chi ld ren remain in

er ate ele ctrica l equipmen t such as power
windows, which increases the risk of an acci ­
dent.
- When the vehicle is loc ke d , no one -particu ­
larly not children -sho uld rema in in the ve­
hicle . Locked doors make it more difficult
f or eme rgency workers to get into the vehi­
cle, which p uts lives at risk.
Starting from a stop
The hold assist function ensures that the parking
brake releases automatically when the vehicle
starts moving .

par king b rake is autom atically released and
yo ur vehicle begins to move.

does not have to be he ld with the brake pedal.
The parking brake e liminates the tendency to
creep when a selector lever position is engaged .
The par king b rake releases automatica lly and the
ve hicle beg ins to move as soon as you press the
accelerator pedal as usual.
Starting on hills
When starting on hills, hill start assist prevents
the vehicle from un intent iona lly rolling back. The
braking force of the parking brake does not re­
lease until the wheels bu ild up enoug h driving
force.

Fo r safety reasons, the par king brake only re­
l eases automatically when the drive r's door is
closed.
Starting to drive with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on a hill,
do the following:
.. Keep the(®} switch pulled and press the acce l­
erator pedal. The parking brake remains set
and prevents the ve hicle from roll ing backwar d.
.. You can release the<®> switch once you a re sure
that you are giv ing enough driv ing force to the
wheels by pressing the accelerator pedal.
Depend ing on the weight of t he rig (vehicle and
trailer) and the steepness of the incline, you may
r oll backward as you start.
Emergency braking function
In the event that the standard brake system fails
or locks up.
.. To brake your veh icle in an eme rgency, pull the
<® > switch and ho ld it pulled.
.. As soon as you re lease the <®> switch or acceler-
ate, the braking stops.
P ulli ng and ho ld ing the C®l switch wh ile driving
the ve hicle activates the eme rgency brak ing func­
tion. The ve hicle brakes at all four wheels by acti­
vat ing the braking hydraulics . T he braking effect
i s sim ila r to mak ing a n emergency stop .

To reduce the risk of act ivat ing the emergency
braking by m istake, an audib le warning tone
(buzzer) sounds w hen the C®l switch is pulled.

emergency, when the normal brake pedal has
