-Always keep in mind that afte r several brake
applications, you will need greater pressure on the brake pedal to stop your vehicle. Do
not rely on strained brakes to respond with
maximum stopping power in cri tical situa ­
t ions . You must allow for increased bra king
distan ces. The extr a dis tance used up by
fa ding b rakes c ould lead to an acciden t.
:ill.IC®) Electromechanical parking b rake
The warning/indicator light monitors the elec­
tromechanical parking brak e.
If the i nd icator lig ht . (USA models)/ . (Cana­
da models) turns on , the parking b rake was set .
The warning/indicator light will go o ut when the
parking brake is re leased.
• (USA models) ;a (Canada model s) Cau­
tion: Vehicle parked too steep
If th e i nd ic ator lig ht blinks and t he message ap ­
pea rs, there is not enoug h bra king power to keep
the vehicle from roll ing. The b rakes have over­
heate d. The veh icle cou ld roll away even on a
sma ll incline .
Press brake pedal to relea se parking brake
To release t he pa rking bra ke, press t he b ra ke ped­
al and press t he button(®) or star t driving wi th
s tartin g assist at the same t ime

Please release parking brake
To release the parking brake manually, press the
brake peda l and press the button(®) at the same
time . The par king brake on ly releases automat i­
cally if the dr iver's safety be lt is fastened.

This warning/indicator light reminds you to put
on your safety belt.
The . war ning/ indicator light illum inates when
the ignit io n is switched on to remind the dr iver
and (on USA models only) any front passenger to
put on the safety be lt. Addit ionally, an acoust ic
warning (gong) w ill also sound.

workshop immediately. Because the vehicle bat ­
te ry is discharging, tur n off a ll unnecessary elec­
trical e quipme nt such as th e r adio . Seek profes­
s iona l assistance if the battery cha rg e l eve l is too
l ow .
(•) Low battery: Battery will be charged while
driving
If the indicato r light turns on and the message
appears, there may be limited sta rting ab ility.
If this message t urns off afte r a little while, the
battery charged enough while dr iv ing .
I f the mess age does not turn off, have yo ur au­

r ect the malfunction .

9:::1: Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol re­
quires immediate service or repair . Driving with a
low-oil-pressure indication is likely to inflict se­
vere damage to the engine.
• Turn off engin e! Oil pressure too low
If the indicator light t urns on and the message
appears, the oil pressure is too low.
• Pull
off the road.
• Stop the vehicle .
• Turnoff the engine.
• Check the engine oil level ¢ page 195.
• If the engine oil level is too low, add engine oil
¢ page 195. Make sure that the o il pressure
warning symbol. appears no longe r in the
display before you start dr iving again.
• If the engi ne oil leve l is correct a nd the ind ica­
tor light st ill turns on, turn the eng ine
off and
do not continue driving . Seek p rofess ional as ­
s istance .
(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicator for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead , check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, prefe rably
each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication

requires oil refill or workshop service with ­
out delay. Do not wait until the red oil pressure warning. starts to flash before
you respond to the low oil leve l warning

A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off eng ine and check coolant level
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears, the coolant temperature is too high o r
the coo lant leve l is too low.
• Pull

• Stop the vehicle.
• Tur noff the engine .
• Check coolant leve l

If the b1 ind icator light blinks while driving , the
E SC or ASR (A nti-Slip Regulat ion) is actively regu­
l ati ng .
If the
b1 ind icator light turns on, the system has
swit ched the ESC off . In this case, yo u can switch
t h e ign ition off and t hen on to sw itch the ESC on
again. The indica tor ligh t turns off when the sys­
tem is functioning fu lly.

A WARNING
If th e 11111 (USA models) JII (Canada mod­
e ls) brake syste m indic ator ligh t turn s on to ­
gether with the ABS and ESC ind icator lights,
the ABS/ESC regulat ing f unction may have
failed. Functions that stabilize the vehicle a re
no longer availab le. This could cause the vehi­
cle to swerve and increase the risk of sliding. Drive carefully t o the nea rest authorized Audi
dealer and have the malfunction cor rected.

ABS/(@) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL) .
The warning/indicator light fJ]l (USA models)/
ti] (Canada models) will come on for a few sec­
onds when the ignition is switched on. The light
will go out after an automatic check sequence is
completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/indicator light does not illuminate
when you switch the ign it ion on.
- The warning/indicator light does not go out af­
ter a few seconds.
- The warning/indicator light illuminates while driving .
The ESC indicator light also illuminates if there is
a ma lfunction in the ABS . The message
Stabiliza­
tion control (ESC): Fault! See owner's manual
also appears in the instrument cluster display
and a warning tone sounds.
The brake system will still respond even with­
out the assistance of the ABS system. See your
authorized Audi dealer as soon as possible to re­
store full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light¢ page 15 and the ABS
warn ing illuminate
together there may be a mal­
function in the ABS, and there may also be a mal­
function in the brake system itself¢,& .
The ABS
will not work and you will notice a change in
braking response and performance.
In the event of a malfunction in the brake sys­
tem
the warning/indicator light 1111 (USA mod­
els)/. (Canada models) in the instrument clus­
ter f lashes ¢

Malfunction in the electronic differential
lock (EDL)
The ED L works together with the ABS . The ABS
warn ing light will come on if there is a malfunc­
tion in the EDL system
c::> page 170 . See your au­
thorized Audi dealer as soon as possible.

A WARNING
-If the fJ]l (USA mode ls)/ tl] (Canada mod­
els) warn ing light does not go out, or if it
comes on while dr iv ing, the ABS system is
not working prope rly . The vehicle can then
be stopped only with the standard brakes
(without ABS) . Yo u will not have the protec­
tion ABS provides. Contact your authorized
Audi dea ler as soon as possible.
- USA models: If the 1111 warning light and
the
fJ]l warning light come on together, the
rear whee ls cou ld lock up first under hard
braking. Rear whee l lock-up can cause loss
of vehicle control and an accident. Have your
veh icle repa ired immediately by your au­
thorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop.
Drive slowly and avoid sudden, hard brake
applications .
-Canada models: If the brake warning light
• and the ABS warning light
ti] come on
together, the rear wheels could lock up first
under hard bra king. Rear wheel lock-up can
cause loss of vehicle contro l and an acci­
dent . Have your vehicle repai red immediate­
ly by your authorized Audi dealer or quali­
fied workshop . Drive slow ly and avoid sud ­
den, hard brake applications.
tli I !i: Safety systems
The fl (USA models) ;fll (Canada models) indi­
cator light monitors the safety systems (e.g. a ir­
bags, pretensioners) and illuminates for a few
seconds each time you switch the ignition on .
-
If the II (USA models)/E,I (Canada mode ls) in­
dicator light does not go out, or if it illuminates
wh ile you are driving, or if it starts to blink, then
there is a malfunction somewhere in the system.
If the light does not illum inate when you sw itch
the ignition on, this also means there is a mal­
function.
A WARNING ~
If you have a malfunction in the safety sys-
tems, contact your a uthorized Audi dea ler im­
mediately. Otherwise the safety systems may
not work properly in an accident.

on as a function check.

If this wa rning/ind icator light ill uminates
while you are dr iv ing, then the re is a malfunc­
tion in the eng ine electronics. Have the mal­
function corrected as soon as possible by your
author ized A udi dealer or a qualified re pair fa ­
cility.
0 Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
T he Malfunc tion Ind ica tor Lamp (M IL) is part o f
the On-Board Diagnos tic (O BD II ) system . The
symbo l
('4 lights up when the ignition is switch ­
e d on and wi ll turn off afte r the engine has start ­
e d an d has sett le d at a constant i dle speed . This
indicates that the MIL is working p roperly.

played in the driver information system, for ex­

If the r.:J indicator light turns on, a bulb has
failed. The message indicates the location of the
bulb.
- If the Im indicator light also turns on, then a
fog light has failed. The position of the indica­
tor light corresponds with the location on the
vehicle.
- If the II indicator light also turns on, then a
rear fog* light has failed. The position of the in­
dicator light corresponds with the location on
the vehicle.
This warning can also occur if the light switch is
in an unengaged position between two symbols.
Vehicle lights: System fault!
If the message appears, there is a malfunction in
the headlights or light switch.
Drive to your authorized Audi dealer immediately
to have the malfunction corrected.

A WARNING
-Light bulbs are pressurized and could ex­
plode while they are being changed causing
serious personal injury.

- Work with due care when handling the high­
voltage section of gas discharge (xenon)
lights*. Failure to do so could result in death

Have the bulb replaced or the connection re­
paired by your authorized Audi Service depart­
ment.

If the symbol II illuminates, the dynamic head­
light range control is no longer working properly.
Have the system checked and repaired at your au­
thorized Audi dealer.

If the indicator light turns on and this message
appears, there is a malfunction in the adaptive
light system. The headlights still function.
Go to an authorized dealership to have the head ­
lights or the control unit for the adaptive light re­
paired.

Applies to vehicles: with light/ra in sensor
II Automatic headlights/ automatic wipers

If the indicator light turns on and this message
appears, the light/rain sensor is not functioning
correctly.

If the B symbol in the display comes on, there is

Sport differential: Overheating
The transmission tempe ratu re has increased sig­
n ifican tly due to the sporty dr iv ing manner. D rive

turns to the normal range and the indicato r light
switches of.
A WARNING
Contact yo ur authorized Aud i dealer or quali­
fied workshop if the sport differential is faulty
or ma lfunctioning. The repa ir must be per­
formed by trained personnel using the co rrect
oil in orde r to ensure safety .

Introduction
The Driver information display inside the instru­
ment cluster provides you, the driver, with im­
portant information.

Some functions and vehicle components are
scanned for their operating status when yo u
switch the ignition on and whi le you are driving.
Malfunctions or required service procedures are
signaled audibly and indicated by red and yellow
illuminated symbols and reminders in the dis­
play.
A WARNING
--- Never rely exclusively on the outside tem­ pe ratu re d isplay to dete rm ine if a road sur­
face is icy or not. Keep in mind that road sur­
faces, espe cially bridges and overpasses,
could be ice covered and slippery even at an
outside temperature above 41 °f (+S °C).
- Always remember, even if the "snowflake"
symbo l (ice warning) does not appear in the
display, black ice cou ld be on the road .
-Always red uce your speed and d rive with
specia l care in cold weather conditions when
the chance of encountering icy road surfaces
increases.
(j) Tips
If the vehicle is stationary, or if yo u are driv­
ing at a very low speed, the temperature
shown in the disp lay might be slightly higher
than the actual outside temperature . This is
caused by the heat being radiated from the
engine.

Gearshift Indicator
Applies to vehicles: with manual transmission and gearsh ift
indicator
This indicator con help conserve fuel.

In order to become familiar with the gearshift in­
d ictor, at first just drive the way you are used to .
If the current gear -and the dr iving situation -is
not the best one for conserving fuel , then the in­
dicator wi ll display the recommended gear . The
d isp lay shows the cu rrent gear and the gear that
is recommended
¢ fig . 12 .
-Up shifting The display will light up to the r ight
of the gear currently se lected if it is recom­
mend ing a h igher gear .
-Dow nshifting : The display will light up to the
left of the gear currently se lected if it is recom­
mend ing a lower gear.
Sometimes the indicator w ill recommend sk ip­
p ing a gear (3
> 5) .
If there is no gearshift recommendation, then
just drive in the appropriate gear for conserving fuel.

This indicator can help you conserve fue l. This
i ndicator is not meant to show you which gear
you should always be in in all driving situa­
tions. Sometimes, in situations such as pass­
i ng, driving through mounta ins or when tow­
ing a trailer, there won't be any gearshift rec­
ommendation .

The display does not light up when the clutch
pedal is be ing depressed.
Efficiency program
Description

T he efficiency program can help you to use less
fuel. It eval uates driving information in reference
to fuel consumpt ion and shows other equ ipment
i nfluencing consumption as well as shift recom­
mendat ions . Fuel economy messages
¢ page 28 provide tips for efficient dr iv ing .
The efficiency program uses distance and con­ sumption data from trip computer

This enhanced shift indicator can help you
conserve fuel. It is not des igned to recom­
mend the correct gear in all driving situations.
Only the drive r can decide which gear is cor­
rect in certain dr iving situations such as when
passing another vehicle, driving on hills or
towing a trailer.

- The enhanced shift indicator display is dif­
ferent in vehicles with a monochrome dis­
play.
- Th e "standard" shift indicator* disappears
when the enhanced shift indicator is dis­
