Tires with unidirectional tread design
Tires with unidirectional tread design must be
mounted with their tread pattern pointed in the
right dir ection .
Using a spare tire with a tread pattern
intended for use in a specific direction
When us ing a spa re tire w ith a t read pa tte rn in­
t e nded fo r use in a specific d ir e ct ion, p lease no te
the following:
- The direction of rotation is marked by an
arrow
on the side of the tire .
-If the spare t ire has to be installed in the incor­
rect direction, use the spare tire only tempora­
rily since the tire will not be able to achieve i ts
o ptimum performanc e character istics wit h re­
gard to aquaplaning, noise and wea r.
- We recommend that you pay pa rticular atten­
t io n t o this fact du ring wet weat he r and t hat
yo u adju st yo ur sp eed to match road condi­
t ions.
- Re place the fla t tire w ith a new one and have i t
i nsta lled on yo ur vehicle as s oon as po ssible to
re store the han dling a dvan tages o f a un idirec­
t io na l tire.
Notes on wheel changing
P lease read the information ¢ page 212, New
tires or wheels
i f you are going to use a spare tire
which is different from the tires on your ve hicle.
Afte r you change a tire:
- Check the tire pressure on the spare immedi­
ately after installation.
- Have the wheel bolt tightening torque
checked with a torque wrench as soon as po s­
sible by your authorized Audi dealer or quali­
fied workshop .
- With steel and alloy wheel rims , the wheel
bolts are correctly tightened at a torque of 90
ft lbs. (120 Nm ).
- If you notice th at the wheel bolt s are corroded
and difficult to turn while changing a tire ,
they should be replaced before you check the
tightening torque .
Emergency assistance
-Replace the flat tire with a new one and have
it installed on your vehicle as soon as possi­
ble. Remount the wheel cover .
Until then , drive with extra care and at reduced
speed s.

were factory installed, then be sure to read

- Always make sure the damaged wheel o r

they co uld fly forward, causing injury to pas­
sen gers in t he ve hicle.

ce lls are screwed in firmly . If not, tighten
pl ugs prior to connect ing clamp on negat ive
battery te rminal.
- Please note that the procedure for connect­
i ng a jumper cable as desc ribed above ap ­
plies specifica lly to the case of yo ur vehicle
being jump started . W hen you a re g iving a
j u mp sta rt to another vehicl e, do
not co n­
ne ct the negative ( -) cab le to the negative
( -) t erminal o n the di scharged battery @

nega tive ( -) cab le to either a solid me tal
com ponent that is f irm ly bolted to the en ­
gine block o r to t he engine bloc k itself. I f
the battery that is being charged does not
vent to the outside , escap ing battery gas
could ignite and exp lode!
Towing with a tow truck
General hints
Y o ur Audi requires special handling for towing.
The fo llow ing information is to be used by com ­
mercia l tow truck operato rs who know how to op­
erate their eq uipment safe ly .
- Never tow your Audi, towing will cause dam­
age to the engine and transmiss ion.
- Never wrap the safety chains or winch cables
around the brake lines .
- To pre vent unnecessary damage, your Audi
must be transported with a flat bed truck.

- To load the vehicle on to the flat bed , use the
towing loop found in the vehicle tools and at·
tach to the front or rear anchorage

A WARNING
A veh icle being towed is not safe f or passe n­
gers . Never a llow anyone to ride in a ve hicle
be ing towed, fo r any reason .
Front towing loop
Do not install the front towing loop until it is
needed .

When it is no longer needed, unscrew the towing
loop and put it back into the vehicle toolkit. Be
sure to have the towing loop stored in the vehicle
at all times .
A WARNING
If the towing loop is not screwed in as far as it
w ill go, the thread can pull out when the vehi­
cle is towed -potential risk of an accident .
Rear towing loop
Do not install the rear towing loop until it is
needed.

On the r ight side of the rear bumper there is a
threaded hole for the towing loop. The threaded
hole is protected by a cover.
• Remove the towing loop from the vehicle too l­
kit
r::!;>page 225.
• Press the cover in by applying short strong
pressure to the bottom part to re lease it from
the bumper r::!;>fig .190.
• Screw the towing loop tight ly into the threaded
hole as far as it will go

with the wheel wrench .
Emergency situations
Unscrew the towing loop again afte r use and in ­
stall the cover in the bumper. Install the cover in
the bumper . Return the tow ing loop to the tool­
k it. Be sure to have the towing loop stored in the
vehicle at all times.

Front hook up
• Align the vehicle with the centerline of the car
carrier ramp.
"' Attach the winch hook to the front towline eye
prev ious ly installed .
Rear hook up
"'Align the vehicle with the centerline of the car
carrier ramp.
"' Attach the winch hook to the rear towline eye
previously installed .
@ Tips
Check carefully to make sure the hook-up is
secure before moving the car up the flatbed
truck ramp.

on the nature of repa irs and adjustments to en­
g ine and transmission parts which an owner can
perform.
Maintenance, adjustments and repairs usua lly re­
qu ire spec ial tools, testing devices and other
equ ipment available to specially trained work­
shop perso nnel in order to assure proper per­
formance, reliab ility and safety of the vehicle and
its many systems.
Improper ma intenance, adjustments and repairs
can impair the operation and reliability of your
vehicle and even void your vehicle warranty .
Therefore, proof of se rv icing in accordance with
the m aintenance schedule may be a condi tion for
upho ld ing a possib le warranty cla im made w ith in
the warranty period .
Above all, operational safety can be adversely af­
fected, creating unnecessary r isks fo r you and
your passengers.
I f in doubt about any servicing, have it done by
your author ized Audi dealer or any prope rly
equ ipped and qua lified workshop. We st rongly
urge you to give your authorized Audi dealer the
opport unity to perform all sched uled mainte­
nance and necessary repairs. Your dealer has the
fac ilities, origina l parts and trained specialists to
keep yo ur vehicle runn ing properly.
P e rforming lim it e d ma inten anc e y ours elf
The fo llowing pages describe a limited number of
proced ures which can be performed on yo ur vehi­
cle with ordinary tools, should the need arise and
trained personne l be unavailable. Before per­
forming any of these procedures, always thor­
oughly read all of the applicable text and careful­
ly follow the instructions g iven . Always rigorously
observe the
W ARNINGS prov ided .
Before you check an ything in the engine com ­
partm ent, always r ead and h eed all WARNING S

ment on page 191.
C o nsum er information
A WARNING
- Ser ious personal injury may occur as a result
of improperly performed maintenance, ad­
justments or repairs.
- Always be extremely careful when work ing
on the vehicle. Always follow commonly ac­
cepted safety practices and general com­ mon sense. Never ris k personal injury.
- Do not attempt any of the maintenance,
checks or repairs descr ibed on the following
pages if you are not fully familia r wi th these
or other procedures w ith respect to the vehi­
cle, or a re unce rtain how to proceed .
- Do not do any work without the proper tools
a nd eq uipment. Have the necessary work
done by your authorized Audi dealer or any
properly equipped and qualified workshop.
- The engine compa rtment o f any motor vehi­
cle is a potentially hazardous area. Neve r
reach into the area around or touch the radi­
ator fan. It is temperature controlled and
can switch on suddenly - even when the en­
g ine is off and the ignition key has been re­
moved. The rad iator fan switches on auto­
mat ically when the coo lant reaches a certain
temperature and will continue to run unt il
the coolant temperature d rops.
- Always remove the ign ition key befo re any­
one gets under the vehicle.
- Always support your veh icle with safety
stands if it is necessary to work underneath
the vehicle. The jack supplied w ith the vehi ­
cle is no t adequ ate for this purpose and
could collapse caus ing serious personal in­
jury.
- If you m ust wor k underneath t he vehicle
with the wheels on the ground, a lways make
sure the vehicle is on level ground, that the
wheels are a lways secure ly blocked and that
the engine cannot be started.
- Always make sure the transmission se lector
lever (automatic transmiss ion) is in "P"
(Park position) or Neutral (manua l transm is-
sion) and the park brake is firmly applied. .,.
