Defective light bulb warning
The defective light bulb warning monitors the function of
the light bulbs in the vehicle.
T he defect ive light bulb war ning moni tors t he f unct io n of the light
bulbs. If a defective light b ulb is detected, or if a light bu lb has
burned o ut, a ye llow sym bol appe ars as we ll as a not ifica tion th at
shows which light bulb is defective .
Defective bulb~
If this symbol I") lights up, a t urn signa l (front or rear), a head lamp, a
bra ke light, t he b ack-up light, a fog l amp o r a rear fog lamp h as
fa iled.
& WARNING
• Light bulbs are unde r pre ssure and can explode when bulbs are
replaced - risk of injury.
• With gas-discharge lamp s* (xenon headlights ), the high­
voltage component must be handled appropriately . Doing other­
wise poses a risk of death!

Windshield washer fluid level too low o

If battery powe r d rops into the range where it can lim it the ability of
the engine to start, t his the symbol ~ appears in the i nstr ument
cl uste r d isp lay with the following driver message
battery charge low:
Indicates charging by being driven .
While this driver not ification is displayed, you have to be prepa red for
limited sta rting ca pability.
Driver message appears and goes out again
If th is drive r mess age appears a fter the igni tion i s tur ned o n or whil e
dr iving and it goes o ut agai n after a while, the battery has been
a de qua tely rech arged.
Driver message appears and does not go out again
If th is dr iver no tifi cati on appears after the ign it ion is tu rned on o r
w hil e driving and does not go out again, the battery 's state of charge
is not in th e o ptim al r ange. Startin g cap abili ty is rest ric ted. H ave t he
battery c hecked at an a uth orized A udi dea ler or othe r qua lified work ­
shop as soon as possible. •

Opening and closing
If you lock the ve hicle us ing the power locking switch , please note
t he follow ing :
• If a door is open, the vehicle ca nnot be locked using t he power
locking system switch.
• You cannot open the doors or the rea r lid from the
outside
(increased secu rity, for examp le whe n you are stopped at a red light).
• The diodes in the power lock ing switch illuminate when all the
doors are closed and lo cked .
• You can unlock and open the doors from the inside by pulling on
t he doo r handle.
• If yo u have a crash and the airbag is activated, the doors automat­
ically unloc k.
& WARNING
• The power locking switch works with the ign ition off and auto­
m atically loc ks the entire vehicle when it is actu ated.
• On a vehicle lo cked from the outside the power locking system
switch is inoperat ive.
• Locking doors from the inside can help p re vent inadvertent
door opening during an accident and can al so pre vent unwanted
e ntry from the outside. Locked door s can, however, delay assi s­
tan ce to veh icle occupants and hold up rescue efforts fr om the
outside in an accident or other emergen cy .

Your vehicle is loc ke d automatically at a speed of 9 mph (15 km/h)
(Auto Lock)=>
page 41. You can unlock the vehicle again using the
opening f unction in the power loc king sys tem switch. •

Convenience opening feature

& WARNING
• Never close the windows inattentively and without checking -
there is risk of injury.
• You must always watch when the windows are being raised so
that no one can be trapped. If you release the key, the closing
action is immediately canceled.

Correcting window regulator malfunction
After disconnecting the vehicle battery, the one-touch up
and down feature must be activated again.
- Pull and hold the power window switch until the window is
completely closed.
- Release the switch.

Opening and closing
-Pull the switch again for one second. The automatic
closing/opening is now reactivated. •
Valet parking
Through the "valet parking" feature the luggage
compartment of your vehicle is secured from unautho­
rized access during the valet parking service .

- Take the mechanical key out of the master key~ page 39.
- Open the glove box~
page 87 and activate~ fig. 42 the
"valet parking" feature by pressing the
[V ALET ) button.
The indicator light in the switch illuminates.
- Close the glove box and lock it with the mechanical key.
- Leave the master key with the service personnel for
parking and keep the mechanical key with you.
When the "valet parking" feature is activated:
• the button
~ on the master key is inactive
• the opening handle in the rear lid is inactive.
The vehicle can be driven and locked and unlocked with the master
key. Access to the luggage compartment is blocked .•

Power top

• Rollover protection active: If the powe r top is operated cont inu­
ous ly fo r an exte nded p eriod of time, roll over prote ction w ill activ at e
to p reve nt damage to the hyd raulic un it . This protective funct io n
p reven ts the powe r top from o pen ing or close for appr oxim ately 1 5
to 30 m inutes. It w ill function again after that:=:;>&.
• Malfunction : Fail ure o f syst em com ponen ts is one pos sible cause
f or ma lf u nct io n. If this happens, you can a lso operate t he power top
by hand :=:;>

Power top not secure
Thi s mes sage appear s with a w arni ng t one if the power top is no t
completely closed or open and the vehicle speed is above SO km/h.
Reduce the ve hicle s peed be low 50 km /h and use t he sw itch to o pen
or close the power top complete ly .
& WARNING
Never dr ive when the power top is not locked correctly. The wind
from driving could cau se the power top to open. This can result in
injuries and damage to the vehicle. •

compartment to prevent damage to the top and th e rear
wi nd ow.
- Pull and hold t he sw itc h until t he powe r top opens a nd the
covers c lose co mpletely .
Closing the power top
- Sw it c h th e ig nition o n.
- R emove any objects t hat are stored in the power top
c o mpar tme nt to preve nt dama ge t o th e top and the rear
window.
- Pr ess and hold the switc h until t he clos ing process is
comple te.
The ind icator light in the instrument cl uster goes out when the top
is com plete ly open or closed. The side w indows a utomat ically lower
slightly during the open ing/closing process.
& WARNING
• When opening and closing the power top, make sure no one
will be injured by the supports and other moving parts.
• Operating the power top reduces the headroom in the rear of
the vehicle. Make sure there i s enough clearance between the rear
passenger and the power top when opening and closing it .•

Retaining pins are located on the long ends of the wind
deflector . They secure the deflector in the mounts on the
vehicle's rear side trim . For safety reasons, inserting the wind
deflector from the side farthest from traffic.
Ins erting and positioning the wind deflector
- Open the rear side window on the side farthest from
traffic.
- Read the assembly instructions on the wind deflector storage bag.
- Remove the wind deflector from the storage bag and fold
it apart
once . The wind deflector is installed in the correct
position when the longest side is toward the front and the
wind deflector frame is at the top.

deflector upward and lift the deflector slight ly in the

Power top
-Now guide the wind deflector into the mounts in the side
trim o n the passenger side@ and press lightly in the
m iddle ® until the handle locks in place.
- Set the wind deflector up com ple tely .
Removing the wind deflector
- Fold the w ind deflector frame back .
- Fold the handle ~
page 54, fig. 48 ® at t he front and
center of the wind deflector upward and lift the deflector
slightly in the center .
- Remove the wi nd deflector from t he mo unts in the side
trim on the passenger side .
- Pull the wind deflector out of the mounts on the driver
side and lift it out.
- Fold it togethe r.
- Store the wind deflector in the storage bag.
& WARNING
• Do not use the w ind deflector t o secure cargo.
• Be ca reful when in stalling so you do no t pinch you r fi ngers.
• Pay attenti on to the traffic when installing the wind defle ctor ,
if necessar y.

Ha rd objects and decorations o n clothing such as be lt buck les can
scratch the paint . Your clothing could also become dirty .

& WARNING
Automatic headlights are only intended to assist the driver. They
do not relieve the driver of his responsibility to check the head­
lights and to turn them on manually a ccording to the current light
and visibility conditions . For example , fog cannot be detected by
the light sensors . So always switch on the headlights under these
weather conditions and when driving in the dark
tD .
[ i J Tips
• Th e light sensor for head light control is located in the rea r view
m irror mount. You shou ld therefore not app ly any st ickers to the
windshield in th is area in order to prevent m alfunct ions or fa ilure s.
• Th e sensitivity level fo r the light senso r se t a t the factory can be
changed in the MMI menu ~
page 64 in the automatic d riving lights
fu nction .
• When you remove your key from the ign ition wh ile the veh icle's
ligh ts ar e tu rned on, a bu zzer sounds as long as the d river 's door is
open.
• Please obey all laws when using the lighting systems described
here .

switch in the AU TO position. •

Fog lights
The side marker lights or low beams must be sw itched on . When the
fog lights a re switc hed on, the green check lig ht at the edge of the
switch comes on .

Rear fog lights

Adjusting exterior Lighting
The functions are selected in the radio or in the MMI.
- Sel ect: Function button [CARI> E x terior lighting.
Com ing home
The coming home function ensures that after
tu rning off the ignition
and op ening th e driver' s door
the vehi cle periphery is illum inated i n
the dark . In addition, the front fog lights, the ta il lights and the
license p late ligh t are tu rned on. The power-on time can be set for a
per iod from O (off) to 60 seconds .
Leaving home
The leaving home funct ions ensures that
when unlocking , the vehicle
per iphery is illuminated in t he da rk. In addi tion, the front fog l igh ts,
the tai l lights and t he license p late light are turned on . This function
can be tu rned on and off.
Automatic driving ligh ts*
W hen the light switch is in the AUTO=> page 62 position, the switch­
on point of the l ights can be changed in the automatic driving light
function.
Daytime running lights*
T he daytime running light s ca n be tu rn ed on o r off using this f unc­
tion. If the funct ion is active, the dayt ime runn ing lights are turned
on a utomat ica lly when the ignition is switched on.
In the vers ions for some co unt ries it is not poss ible to switc h off the
daytime running lights or they may not have daytime running lights.
(I) Tips
The coming home/ leaving home f unction is avai lab le only with the
switch in the AUTO position .•
Daytime running Lights (DRL) (USA models)
T he daytime running lights are turned on au tomatically
w hen the ignition is switched on.
On vehicles w ith xenon lights the daytime running lights will come on
autom atically when the ig ni tio n is t urned on and t he lig ht switch
=>
page 62, fig. 65 is in the O position or the AUTO position (only in
d aylig ht co ndit ions). T he

Neve r use daytime running lights to see where you are going. They

When you turn on the ignition the daytime running lights
will come on automatically.

ignition is switched on, there is a difference between vehicles with bi­
xenon lights and halogen lamps:
• On vehicles with b i-xenon lights only the dayt ime running lamps in
the headlights will come on.
• On vehicles with halogen lights the front fog lights, side marker
lights and tail lights come on automatically.

The basic brightness of the illumination for the instru­
ments, the center console and the display can be
adjusted.

brightness when it is dark.

Xenon headlights
After starting the engine, the xenon head lights are automat ically
adjusted to the load and ang le of t he vehicle (for e xamp le, dur ing
acce leration and brak ing) . This prevents oncom ing traffic from expe ­
r ienc ing unnecessary headlight glare from yo ur xenon head lights.
If the sy ste m is not opera ting p roperly, a warning symbol in t he Auto ­
Check Control is displayed~
page 35. •

Adaptive Light
Wh en driving around bends, the relevant ar ea of the road
is better illuminated .

The benefit of adaptive light is that the curve and the edge of the road
are better illum inate d~ fig. 68. Dyn am ic a daptive light is con trolled
automatically, depend ing on ve hicle speed and steering whee l angle .
When driving around bends, the headlights are contro lled accord ing
t o s teer ing whee l angle . So t hat there is no bla ck ho le ahea d of the
vehicle , the two ma in beams pivot at d ifferent angles.
[I] Tips
The system works above a speed of about 6 mph (10 km/h) .•
Emergency flashers A
T h e eme rgency flash ers m akes ot her mot ori st s a ware
that you or y our vehicle a re in an eme rgency situation.

When the e merge ncy flashers are on, all fou r turn sig nals blink at the
same t ime. The turn signal indicator lights¢¢ in the i nstr ument
cl uste r, as well as the ligh t in the eme rge ncy flasher switch ~ blink
likewise . The emergency flashers also wo rk when the ignition is
t urned off. .,_

& WARNING
• The rain sensor is only intended to assist the driver. The driver
is still responsible for manually switching the wipers on according
to the visibility conditions.
• The windshield may not be treated with water-repelling wind­
shield coating agents. Unfavorable conditions, such as wetness,
darkness, low sun, can result in increased glare. Wiper blade
chatter is also possible.
• Properly functioning windshield wiper blades are required for
a clear view and safe driving~ page
71, "Installing new wiper
blades ".

• In the case of frost, check whether the windshield wiper blades are
frozen to the windshie ld. Switching on the windshield wipers can
damage the wiper blades!
• Prio r to using a car wash, the windsh ield wiper system must be
switched off (lever in position 0) . This prevents unintentional
switching on and damage to the win dshield wiper system.
[ i J Tips
• The windshield wipers are switched off when the ignition is turned
off . Activate the windsh ield wipers after the ignition is switched back
on by moving the windshield wiper lever to any position.
• Worn or dirty windshield wiper blades result in streaking. This can
affect the rain sensor* function . Check your windshield wiper blades
regularly .
• Th e washer fluid nozzles of the w indshield washe r system are
heated at low temperatures when the ignition is on. •
When stopping temporarily, e .g . at a traffic light, the set speed of
the windsh ield wipers is automatically reduced by one speed.•
Service position
The windshield wiper blades are replaced in the service
position.

- If the wiper blades are not frozen to the windshield, bring
the windshield wiper lever to the basic position @
~ page 69, fig . 74.
-Select: Function button [ CAR] > Windshield wipers >
Service position.
• On -changing the windshield wipe r blades can only be done if you
br ing the wiper arms to the service position~ fig. 75 . You will also
avoid paint damage to the hood when working on the wipers in this
position .
• Off -the windshield wipers are moved to their initial position
again.
