Gearbox malfunction: you can continue driving (limited
functionality)
There is a serious system malfunction:
• The program shifts only into certain gears .
• The engine may stall.
• It is not possible to restart the engine if it has been switched off.
• Continuing to drive could result in subsequent damage .

If the transmission switches to fail-safe mode, you should take the
vehicle to an authorized Audi dealership as soon as possible to have
the condition corrected.•

Emergency release of the selector lever
If the vehicle's power supply fails, the selector lever can
be released in an emergency.

The emergency release is located under the insert for the
ashtray.
- Slide open the cover for the ashtray.
- Release the ashtray by pushing the switch©~ fig. 157
to the right.
- Remove the ashtray insert @ .
- Now you can see a small cover in the ashtray holder on the
front of the ashtray recess.
- Release and remove this cover.
- You now have access to a bolt. Using a screwdriver or
similar, press the bolt down and hold it down~ fig. 158.
Now press the interlock and move the selector lever to the
N position.
The selector lever can only be moved from the P position if the igni
tion key is in the lock and the ignition is turned on. If the vehicle has
to be pushed or towed if the power supply fails (e.g. battery is
discharged), the selector leve r must first be moved to the N position
using the emergency locking device.•

multitronic®

General information
Your vehicle is equipped with a electronically controlled continuous ly
var iable transmission (multitronic ®). Inside the multitronic ® system,
the gear ratios are not shifted in finite steps as in a conventional auto
matic transm ission, but rather
continuously. As a result, engine
power is applied smoothly and comfortably, and better fuel economy
is achieved.
The transmission selects the appropriate gear ratio (upshifts and
downsh ifts) automatically based on set driving programs
=> page 159, "Dynamic shift program (DSP)" .
You can also manually select a shift program (tiptronic ®)
=> page 159 .
You should note, that the multitronic transmission differs from a
conventional Automatic Transmission. In the multitronic transmis
sion the engine power is transferred via a link-plate chain, rather than
by a conventiona l torque converter . The multitronic transmission
great ly reduces vehicle "creep" when at a standstill and the transmis
sion is in
D Sor R. •

Driving the multitronic ®
The gear ratio is continuously adopted to vehicle speed
and load.
Starting the engine
- The selector lever must be in N or P.
Starting off
- Press and hold the brake pedal.

- Press and hold the release button in the selector lever
handle and move the selector leve r from
P (alternatively
N ) to D (alternatively S) and release the button.
- Wait briefly until the transmission has shifted (you will
feel a slight movement).
- Remove your foot from the brake pedal and accelerate
=> &.
Rocking back and forth to become unstuck
- Shift only between D and R when the vehicle is at a full
stop and the engine is running at idle speed.

Stopping
- Press a nd hold the brake pedal un til the vehicle has come

- Keep the brake pedal depressed so that the vehicle cannot

Your vehicle is equipped with a starting assist that a llows for eas ier
s t arting on in clines. The sys tem is activa ted w hen the brake ped al is
depressed for a
few seconds . After releasing the brake pedal, the
bra ke powe r is he ld for a moment to prevent the vehicle from ro lli ng
back when starting .
T he selector lever must be in Nor
P. If one of the driving positions is
engaged a safety switch will p reven t the eng ine from be ing started .

Before you move the selecto r lever from t he P posi tio n, yo u m ust
always app ly the brake peda l befo re and whi le depressing the button
in the handle of the selecto r lever .
& WARNING
• Unintended vehicle movement can cau se serious injury.

-When the selecto r lever is in a dri ving pos ition, the vehicle
may creep , even at idle speed. Therefore do not relea se the
parking brake or foot brake until you are ready to move ,
becau se power is transmitted to the wheels a s soon as a driving
position i s engaged.
- Do not a ccelerate while selecting a driving p osition. At this
time the engine must be at idle sp eed so that undue stress is
not placed on the clutche s in the transmi ssion.
- Remembe r: • even when stopped briefly with the automatic
transmi ssion in "D ", "S " or "R ", engine power i s being trans·
mitted to the wheels . Your vehicle could "creep " forward or
backward . When stopped, keep the brake pedal fully
depressed and use the parking brake if necessary to keep the
vehicle from rolling .
- If the selector le ver is unintentionally moved into N while
y ou are driving , take your foot off the accelerator pedal and
wait for the engine to return to idle sp eed before selecting a
driving position.
- Never shift into "R " or "P " when the vehicle i s in motion .
- Never get out of the driver 's seat when the engine i s running .
- If you must get out of the vehicle , move the selector le ver
s ecurely into the P position and apply the parking brake firmly.
- If the engine must remain running , never have any driving
position engag ed when checking under the hood. Make sure
the selector lever has securely eng aged and is locked in "P"
with the parking brake firmly set=>
page 272, "Engin e
compartment ". Otherwise, any increase in engine speed may
s et the vehicle in motion, even with the parking brake
applied. •

you must always apply the footbrake before and wh ile mov ing the

Do not use N for coast ing down hill.
D -Normal driving position for forward
Depend ing on the load on the engine, ve hicle speed and the dynamic
co ntrol p rogr am, the t ransm ission will se lec t th e
optimal gea r ratio.
I n certa in circu mstances i t may be advantageous to tempora rily
switch to the manua l sh ift program to manua lly se lec t gea r rat ios to
match s pec ific d riving condi tions=>
page 159 .
When the vehicle is stat ionary o r at speeds be low 3 mph (5 km/ h),
you must alw ays app ly t he footbrake before and w hile mov ing the
lever to
D out of N .
S -Sport posit ion
Select this position for sportier performance. In this position, the
tr ansmi ssio n will no t upshift as soon, allowing t he vehicle to use the
increased power available at higher engine speeds to achieve livelier
ac ce le ra tion.
Whe n the vehicle is s tat ionary o r at speeds below 3 mph (5 km/h),
you must always app ly the foot bra ke before and while moving the
lever to
S out of N.

Coasting downhill with the transmission in N and the engine not
operating will result in damage to the automatic transmission and
possibly the catalytic converter. •

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against acci
dentally shifting into a forward or the reverse gear and
causing the vehicle to move unintentionally.

The selector lever lock is released as follows:
- Turn the ignition on.
- Step on the brake pedal.
At the same time press and hold
the interlock button on the side of the gear selector knob
=:> page 158, fig. 161 with your thumb until you have
moved the selector lever to the desired position.
Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N positions when the ignition
is turned on. To move the lever from these positions the driver must
depress the brake pedal. As a reminder to the driver, the following warning appears
in the instrument cluster display when the selector
is in
P and N:
When stationary apply footbrake while selecting gear
A time delay element prevents the selector lever from locking when
it is moved through the
N position (going from R to D). The locking
element will lock the selector lever if the lever is left in N (Neutral) for
more than approximately 1 second, without the brake pedal being
pressed.
At speeds above about 3 mph (5 km/h) the Automatic Shift Lock is
automatically deactivated in the
N position.
Interlock button
The lock button on the selector lever prevents the lever from being
accidentally shifted into certain positions. Pressing this button deac
tivates the selector lever lock. Depending on the direction of the
shift, the selector lever locks at different positions. The positions are
highlighted in the illustration~
page 158, fig. 161.
Ignition key safety interlock
The key cannot be removed from the ignition unless the selector lever
is in the
P park position. When the ignition key is removed, the
selector lever will be locked in the
P position. •

Kick-down
The kick-down feature allows the vehicle to generate
maximum acceleration.
When you press the accelerator pedal beyond the resistance point
that is reached at full throttle, the transmission will select a lower
gear ratio based on vehicle speed and engine RPM. The engine RPM
will be controlled to produce maximum vehicle acceleration as long
as you continue to press the accelerator pedal beyond this resistance
point. ..

Be careful when using the kick-down feature on slippery roads.
Rapid acceleration may cause the vehicle to skid.•

Dynamic shift program {DSP)
The multitronic ® transmission is electronically
controlled.
The transmission selects the appropriate gear ratio (upshifts and
downshifts) automatically based on preset driving programs.
The transmission will select one of the
economy programs when you
drive at a steady speed or a gradually changing speeds without heavy
acceleration . This gives best fuel efficiency, with early upshifting and
delayed downshifting .
The transmission will automatically select the
sporty shift programs
when you drive at higher speeds, or with heavy acceleration and
frequently changing speeds . Upshifts are delayed to make full use of
engine power . Downshifting takes place at higher engine speeds than
in the economy programs.
The selection of the most suitable shift program is a continuous,
automat ic p rocess . The driver can also make the transmission switch
to a sporty program by
quickly pressing down the gas pedal.
This causes the transmission to shift down into a lower gear ratio and
makes quick acceleration possible (to pass another vehicle) You do
not need to press the gas pedal into the kickdown range . After the
transmission has upshifted, the original program is selected
according to your driving style.
An additional shift program allows the automatic transmission to
select the proper gear for uphill and downhill gradients.
This prevents the transmission from shifting up and down unneces sarily on hills. The transmission will shift down to a lower gear ratio

when the driver presses the brake pedal on a downhill gradient . This
makes use of the braking effect of the engine without the need to
shift down manually.
If you are driving in h ills and mountains, the transmission will contin
uously adjust the gear ratio to the road grade. If you press the brake
pedal when driving downhill, the transmission will downshift auto
matically. This increases the braking effect of the engine.
If the cruise control is on when you are traveling downhill, the trans
mission will automatically select a lower gear ratio in order to main
tain the set vehicle speed. This will cause the engine speed to
increase. •

tiptronic ® manual shift program
Using the manual shift program (tiptronic ®) you can
manually shi~ between seven pre-programmed gear
ratios (transmission positions).

Switching to manual shift program
- Push the selector lever to the right from D. As soon as the
transmission has switched over, the selected gear appears
in the display~ fig. 163.
To upshift
-Push the selector lever forward to the plus position
~ page 159, fig. 162 G).
To down shift
- Push the lever to the minus position Q.
When accelerating , the transmission will automatically shift into the
next higher gear before the engine reaches the maximum RPM.
Wh en accelerating, if you apply a light thrott le, the tiptronic ® will
automatically shift into the next higher gear to save fuel. If you apply
a heavy throttle, the transmission will stay in gear engaged until near
maximum RPM are reached, or until the driver manua lly shifts into a
higher gear.
If you take your foot off the accelerato r pedal when driving down a
steep incline , the tiptronic ® will downshift from the selected gear
into the next lower gear based on road speed and engine RPM. The
automatic downshifting is interrupted as soon as you apply throttle
again .
[I] Tips
• When you shift into the next lower gear, the engine w ill downshift
only when there is no possibility of over-revving .
• When the kick-down comes on, the transmission will sh ift down to
a lower gear depending on vehicle and engine speeds.
• The tiptronic ® is inoperative when the transmiss ion is in the fail
safe mode .•

Steering wheel with tiptronic ®
The shift buttons on the steering wheel allow the driver to
shift gears manually.

The shift buttons are activated when the selector lever is in D, Sor in
the manual shift program (tiptronic).
Of course, you can continue to use the manual shift program with the
selector lever on the center console . •

Automatic transmission malfunction )
In the event of a system malfu nction, the automatic transmission
swi tches to emergency opera tion mode.
Gearbox malfunction: you can continue driving

- To access the emergency release mechanism, remove the
ashtray insert ® using the release switch@=> fig . 165.
- Loosen and remove the cap in the ashtray mount .
- You now have access to a pin . Using a screwdrive r or
similar object , press the pin down and hold it in that posi-
tion => fig . 166. ._

Homelink®
Universal remote control
Applies to veh icles: w ith Hom elin k® un iversal re m ote contro l
General information
The Homelink ® feature can learn up to three radio
frequency codes for most current transmitters used for
operating garage doors, estate gates , home or outdoor
lighting systems, and other devices.
Yo u must fi rst p rogr am the Home link® tra nsmi tte r be fore you can

In order to program the Homelink ® transm itter fo r devices utilizing
rolling code, a second person on a ladder who can sa fely reach t he
garage door opener motor is recommended. It is also necessary to
locate the "learn" button on yo ur garage door opener motor . Re fer to
t he oper ating ins truc tions fo r th e opene r, as the loca tion and color o f
this button may vary by manufacturer .
Yo u can still use the original remote control for the device at any
t ime .
& WARNING
• Never use the Homelink'"' transmitter with any garage door
opener that does have not the safety stop and rever se feature as
required by fed eral safety standards. This includes any garage
door opener model manufactured before April
l , 1982 .
• A garage door opener which cannot detect an object, signaling
the door to stop and reverse does not meet current federal safety
standards . Using a garage door opener without these features
increases risk of serious injury or death.
& WARNING (cont inu ed )
• For safety reasons never release the parking brake o r start the
engine while anyone i s standing in front of the vehicle .
• A ga rage door or an estate gate may sometimes be set in
motion when the Homelink ® remote control is being
programmed. If the device is repeatedly activated, this can over
s train motor and dam age its electri cal components -an over
heated motor is a fi re hazard!
• To avoid pos sible injurie s or property damage , plea se always
make absolutely certain that no persons or objects are located in
the range of motion of any equipment being operated.

Programming the Homelink ® transmitter
The transmitter is programmed in two phases . For rolling
code transmitters, a third phase is also necessary .

1. Make sure your vehicle is within operating range of the
remote controlled garage door opener .
2. Set the parking brake=>
& in "General information" on
page 172 .
3. Turn the ignition on . Do not start the engine!

4. Press and hold the two outside Homelink ® buttons G)and
@ for approximately 20 seconds until indicator light@
=> fig. 175 begins to flash . Then release both buttons. Do
not hold the buttons for longer than
30 seconds .
- This procedure only needs to be performed
once. It erases
the factory-set default codes and does not have to be
repeated to program additional remote controls.
5. Press and hold the Homelink ® button G), @ or@ until
the indicator light @starts flashing
slowly . Release the
button.
- The system will remain in programming mode for 5
minutes. Co to the front of the vehicle and proceed with
phase
2.

6. Point the original remote control to the m iddle of the
radiator grille of your vehicle=> fig.
176.
7. Hold the original remote control at a distance between O
S in. (0-13 cm) (use the shortest distance possible) .
8 . Press and hold the activation button on the remote
control.
- May be different in Canada . If so, press and re-press
(cycle) the activation button on your remote control every
two seconds.
9. The emergency flashers will flash
three times (after about
15-60 seconds) when the programming is successful.
Release the button on the remote control.
- To program more devices , repeat steps 4 to 9.
