Never run the tank completely dry! An ir­
reg ular supply of fuel can cause eng ine
m isfiring and fuel could enter into the ex­
haust system. The catalyt ic converter
could the n overheat and be damaged .
Warning/indicator
Lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on . They indicate functions or
malfunct ions ¢,&. .
Messages may appear with some indicator
lights. A warning signal will sound at the
same time . The messages disappear again af­
ter a short t ime . To display a message again ,
pressthelSE T!button
¢ page 11. If severa l
malfunc tions occu r, each of the indica to r/
warn ing lamps will be d isplayed in succession
for abo ut two seconds at a time .
Some ind icators lights in the disp lay can turn
on in several colors.
_& WARNING
- F ailure to heed warning lights and o ther
impor tant vehicle info rmation may result
in serious persona l injury o r vehicle dam­
age.
- Whenever sta lled or stopped for repair,
move the vehicle a safe distance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on the
eme rgency flasher¢

-The e ngine compartment of any motor
vehicle is a potentially hazardous area.
Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, stop the engine and let it
cool down. Always exercise extreme cau­

Some indicator lights t urn on briefly to check
the function of that system when you switch
the ignit ion on . These systems are marked
with a../ in the fo llow ing tables . If one of
these indicator lights does not tu rn on, there
i s a ma lf u nct ion in that system.
Red indicator lights
Red symbo ls indicate a prior ity ma lfunction -

- Pull off the road .
- Stop the vehicle.
- Tur n off the engi ne.

T he light illuminates when the ignition is
swi tched on.
It goes out after the engine has
been started. This indicates that the b rake
warning light is functioning p roperly.
If th e brake warning light do es not light up

malfunction in the elect rical sy ste m . In thi s
ca se, cont act your Audi dealer.
If the brake system wa rning/indicator light

w hile dri ving , the emergency braking
function may not be available. It may not be
poss ible to set the parking brake or release
it once it has been set. Seek professional as­
s istance .

qualified workshop to have all brake pads in­
spected

When the light comes on, an audible warning
signal is also given.
& WARNING
- Always observe the warnings in
~ page 205, Engine compartment, be­
fore opening the hood and checking the brake flu id.
- Driv ing with low b rake fluid is a safety
haza rd. Stop the car and get professional
assistance.
- USA models: If the 1111 warn ing light,
the . warning light and
thee warn­
ing light come on together, the rear
wheels co uld lock up fi rst unde r hard
braking . Rear wheel lock -up can cause
loss of vehicle contro l and an accident.
Have your vehicle repaired immediately
by your authorized Audi dea ler or a quali­
fied workshop. Drive slowly and avoid
sudden, hard brake applications.
-Canada models: If the brake warn ing
light ., the
DJ warn ing light and the
ABS warning light
liJ come on togethe r,
the rear wheels could lock up fi rst unde r
hard bra king. Rear wheel lock-up can
c ause loss of vehicle control and an a cc i­
dent. Have yo ur vehicle repaire d immed i­
ately by your authorized A udi dealer or a
qualified wo rkshop . Drive slowly and
avo id sudden, hard brake applicat ions.
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
parking brake is released, or lights up
whi le you are driv ing, the fluid level in
the brake fluid reservoir is too low. If you believe that
it is safe to do so, proceed
immed iate ly at low speed to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or qualif ied repair
facility and have the brake system in­
spected.
- Always keep in mind that after several
brake applications, you will need greater
pressure on the brake pedal to stop your
veh icle. Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with max imum stopping power
in critical s ituations. You m ust allow fo r
increased braking distances . The extra
d istance used up by fading brakes could
lead to an accident.
· ~fu /C®) Electromechanical parking brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the
electromechanical parking brake.
If the indicator l igh t. (USA models)/ .
(Canada mode ls) turns on, t he p arking br ake
was set . If the parking brake is se t when the
ignition is
off, the indicator light turns off af­
ter abo ut 20 seconds .
The wa rn ing/i ndicator lig ht w ill go ou t when
the parking brake is re leased.
• (US A models ) ;a (Canada model s) Cau­
t ion: Vehicle parked too steep
If the indicator light b links and the message
appears, there is not enough braking power to
keep the vehicle from roll ing . T he b rakes have
ove rheated. The veh icle cou ld roll away eve n
o n a sm all incline .
Press brake pedal to relea se parking brake
To release the parking brake, press the brake
pedal and press the button(®) or start driving
with starting assist at the same time

Please release parking brake
To re lease the parking brake manually, press
the brake peda l and press the button<®) at
the same time. The parking brake only re leas­
es automatically if the driver's safety belt is

If the E indicator light turns on and this
message appears, there is a pa rking brake
mal funct ion. Drive to your authorized Aud i
dea ler or qualified workshop immediately to
have the malfunction corrected.
,(,_ Safety belts
This warning/indicator light reminds you to
put on your safety belt.
The . warning/ind icator light illuminates
when the ignition is switched on to rem ind
the driver and any front passenger to put on
the safety belt. Additionally, an acoustic warn­ i ng (gong) will a lso sound .

E::::3 Battery
The. warning/indicator light illuminates
when you switch on the ignition and must go
out after the engine has started.
• Alternator fault: Battery is not being
charged
If the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, there is a malfunction in the
generator or vehicle e lectrica l system.
D rive to you r autho rized Aud i dealer or quali­
fied workshop immediately . Because the vehi ­
cle battery is discharging, turn
off a ll unnec­
essary electrical equipment such as the radio .
Seek professional assistance if the battery
charge leve l is too low.
(•) Low battery: Battery will be charged
while driving
If the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, there may be limited starting
ability.
If th is message turns
off after a litt le while,
the battery charged enough wh ile driving. If the
message does not turn
off, have your
authorized Audi dea ler or qualified workshop
correct the ma lfunction.
'l:::7: Engine oil pre ssure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol
requires immediate service or repair . Driving
with a low-oil-pressure indication is likely to
inflict severe damage to the engine .
• Turn off engine! Oil pressure too low
If the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, the oil pressure is too low.

(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is
not an indicator for a low engine oil lev­
el. Do not rely on it. Instead, check the
oil level in your engine at regular inter­
vals, preferably each time you refuel,
and always before going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication
l!I requires oil refill or workshop serv­
ice without delay. Do not wait until the
red oil pressure warning. starts to
flash before you respond to the low oil
level warning
Ill. By then, your engine
may already have suffered serious dam­
age.

r u n at id le for a few m inutes to cool down.

- If your vehicle should break down for
mechanical or other reasons, park at a
safe distance from moving traffic, turn
off the engine and turn on the hazard
warning lights¢

- Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escap ing from the en­
gine compartme nt -you risk being scald­
ed . Wait until you can no longer see or
hear steam or coo lant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any veh icle
is a dangerous area. Before you perform
any wor k in the engine compartment,
t ur n of the eng ine and allow it to cool. Follow the warning stickers

steering co lumn lock beca use it cannot be
steered due to the locked steering . If it is
towed with the steering locked, there is
the r isk of an accident.

sage appears, do
not switch the ignition off
because you may not be ab le to switch it on
again.
Drive to your authorized A udi dealer immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected.
On vehicles with conve nience key*, the engine
shou ld not be switched off using the ..,.

32 Opening and clo sing
- If the power locking system should ma l­
function, you can lock the driver's door us ing the mechanical key
c:> page 36.
- If the power locking system should fail,
you can sti ll open the fue l tank flap in an
emergency
c:> page 211.
- You are we ll advised not to keep valua­
bles inside an unattended vehicle, visib le
or not. Even a properly locked vehicle
cannot provide the security of a safe.
- If the LED in the upper edge of the driv­
er's door panel comes on for abo ut 30
seconds after the vehicle is locked, there i s a ma lfunction in the power locki ng or
the anti-theft warning system. Have the
malfunction corrected by an author ized
A udi dealersh ip or qua lified repai r fac ili­

You can centrally lock and unlock your vehicle
and start the engine with the master key with
remo te con trol. A mec hanical key is integ rat­
ed i n the master key
c:> page 33 .
@ Emergency key
The emergency key is not intended for con­
stant use.
It should on ly be used in an emer­
gen cy, fo r example, in place of the ign ition key
cc> page 7 7. Keep it in a s afe p lace and do
not ca rry it on your key ring .
Key replacement
If you lose a key, contact you r authorized Audi
dealer immed iate ly to have the

bled. Be sure to bring all your keys with you .
Number of keys
You can check the number of assigned keys to
yo ur vehicle
c:> page 11. This allows you to
make su re you have re ceived all of the keys
when you purchase a used vehicle.
Data in the master key
D uring d riving, service and maintenance-rele­
vant data is continuously stored on your mas­
te r k ey. Your Aud i service adviser can read out
t hi s data and tell you abo ut the work yo ur
ve­
hicle needs . This applies also to vehicles with
convenience key*.
Personal comfort settings
If two people use one veh icle, it i s r ecom­
men ded that e ach person alw ays uses "t heir
own" maste r key. When the ignition is tu rne d
off or when the vehicle is locked, personal
convenience setti ngs for the following sys ­
tems are stored and assigned to the remote
master key.
- Climate contro l
- Powe r lock ing system
- Seat memory *
- Parking system*
- Adapt ive cru ise control*
- Side assist*
- Drive se lect*
T he s to red settings are au toma tically recalled
whe n you unlock the vehicle, when yo u open
t h e doors or w hen you t urn on t he ignitio n.
A WARNING
-Do not leave your vehicle unattended
wit h the key in the ignition lock. Entry by
unaut horized persons co uld endanger
you or result in theft or damage the vehi­
cle.
- Do not leave ch ildren unattended in the
veh icle, especially with access to vehicle

Power top emergency
operation
General information
The power top can be closed by hand if there
is a malfunction .
~ Activate the parki ng b rake.
~ Open the windows
~ Remove the key from the ignit ion.
Only close the powe r top ma nually in an eme r­
gency. The best solu tion is to have your au­
thor ized Audi dealer co rrect the cause of the
mal func tion.
Powe r top emergency operation consists of
the following steps:
- Unlocking the power top compartment
cover:
The cover on the power top compart ­
ment must be released by hand .
-Closing the power top: The power top must
be l ifted o ut of the tray and close d.
- Locking the power top: The powe r top
latches must be locked with the emergency
key .
A WARNING
- W hen positioning th e power top, avoid
co nta ct wi th th e suppo rts or o ther mov­
ing parts. Make su re al l of the windows
are lowered . Otherw ise you cou ld pi nch
yo ur hands.
- N ever dr ive when the power top is not
locked correct ly . The win d from drivin g
cou ld cause t he power to p to open . This
can res ult in injuries and damage to the
vehicle .
@ Tips
Have a second person assist when clos ing
the power top . Posit io ning t he power top
is easier when t here is a second person to
he lp.

compartment cover
T he release lever for the powe r top compart­
ment is lo cated under the trim in the luggage
compartmen t.

This message appears if the master key is re­
moved from the vehicle with the engine run­
n ing.
If the master key is no longer in the ve ­
hicle, you cannot switch on the ignition after
stopping the engine and you also cannot start
the eng ine again . Moreover, you can not lock
the veh icle from the outside w ith the key.
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if lever is not in
P.
This message appears for safety reasons
a long w ith a warning signa l. It appears if the
selector lever for the automat ic transm iss ion
is not in the P position when switch ing off the
ignition . Move the selector lever to the P pos i­
tion, othe rwise the ve hicle is not secured
against rolling away . You also cannot lock the
vehi cle using the locking bu tton* on the door
han dle or using the remote key.
Convenience key defective! Use ignition lock
This message appears if the eng ine must be
started or stopped using the ignition key and
not the
I STAR T ENGIN E ST OP ! button .
Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanicol parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

.., Pull on the switch @c:> fig. 92 to apply the
parking brake. The indicator light in the
switch illum inates .
.., Step on the brake peda l or the accele rator
pedal and press the switch at the same time to re
lease the par king brake . The indicator
light in the switch goes out.
Your vehicle is equipped wi th an electrome­
chanical parking brake . The parking brake is
designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling
u nintentionally and replaces the hand brake.
In addition to the normal fun ctions of a tradi­
tiona l hand b rake, the electromechanical
parking brake provides various convenience
and safety f unctions .
When starting from rest
-The integral start ing assist helps you when
driving by automatica lly re leasing the par k­
ing brake

-When starting on inclines, the starting as­
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentiona l­
ly ro lling back. The braking force of the
parking brake is not released until sufficient
driving force has been built up at the
wheels.
Emergency brake function

can be slowed down even if the
normal brakes

Indicator lights
- If the parking brake is closed with the igni­
tion

- If the parking brake is closed with the igni­

on in the instrument cluster and the switch
for about 20 seconds .
A WARNING
-
If a drive range is engaged with the vehicle
stationary and the engine runn ing , you
must in no instance accelerate carelessly.
Otherwise the vehicle will start to move
i mmed iately- risk of an acc ident.

@ Tips
-You can apply the parking brake at any
time - even with the ignition switched
off . The ignit ion must be t urned on in or­
der to release the parking brake.
- Occasiona l noises when the parking
brake is applied and re leased are norma l
and are not a cause for concern.
- When the vehicle is parked, the parking
brake goes through a se lf-test cycle at
regular intervals. Any assoc iated noises
are norma l.

equ ipment (e.g. power windows). There
is t he risk of an acc ident .
- When the veh icle is locked, no one -par­
ticularly not children should rema in in
the vehicle. Locked doors make it more
difficult for emergency wo rke rs to get in­
to the veh icle - putting lives at risk.
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .
Stopping and applying parking brake
• Pull the switch®¢ fig. 92 to app ly the
parking brake.
Sta rting and automatically rel easing the
parking brake
• When you start to drive as usual, the park­
ing brake is automatically released and your
veh icle beg ins to move .
When stopping at a traffic signal or stopping in city traff ic on vehicles with an automatic
transmission, the parking brake can be ap­ plied . The vehicle does not have to be he ld
with the footbrake. The pa rking brake elimi­
nates the tende ncy to creep w ith a dr ive range
engaged. As soon as yo u drive off as usu al,
t h e parking bra ke is re leased automatic ally
and the vehicle starts to move.
Starting on slopes
When starting on inclines, the sta rting assist
prevents t he vehi cle from u nintent ionally roll­
ing back. The bra king force of the par kin g
brake is no t re leased unti l su ff ic ient d riving
f orce has been built up at the wheels.
