pear
w hile dri ving , the emergency braking
function may not be available. It may not be
poss ible to set the parking brake or release
it once it has been set. Seek professional as­
s istance .
(USA models): If the warning light

diately contact your authorized Audi dealer or
qualified workshop to have all brake pads in­
spected

When the light comes on, an audible warning
signal is also given.
& WARNING
- Always observe the warnings in
~ page 205, Engine compartment, be­
fore opening the hood and checking the brake flu id.
- Driv ing with low b rake fluid is a safety
haza rd. Stop the car and get professional
assistance.
- USA models: If the 1111 warn ing light,
the . warning light and
thee warn­
ing light come on together, the rear
wheels co uld lock up fi rst unde r hard
braking . Rear wheel lock -up can cause
loss of vehicle contro l and an accident.
Have your vehicle repaired immediately
by your authorized Audi dea ler or a quali­
fied workshop. Drive slowly and avoid
sudden, hard brake applications.
-Canada models: If the brake warn ing
light ., the
DJ warn ing light and the
ABS warning light
liJ come on togethe r,
the rear wheels could lock up fi rst unde r
hard bra king. Rear wheel lock-up can
c ause loss of vehicle control and an a cc i­
dent. Have yo ur vehicle repaire d immed i­
ately by your authorized A udi dealer or a
qualified wo rkshop . Drive slowly and
avo id sudden, hard brake applicat ions.
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
parking brake is released, or lights up
whi le you are driv ing, the fluid level in
the brake fluid reservoir is too low. If you believe that
it is safe to do so, proceed
immed iate ly at low speed to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or qualif ied repair
facility and have the brake system in­
spected.
- Always keep in mind that after several
brake applications, you will need greater
pressure on the brake pedal to stop your
veh icle. Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with max imum stopping power
in critical s ituations. You m ust allow fo r
increased braking distances . The extra
d istance used up by fading brakes could
lead to an accident.
· ~fu /C®) Electromechanical parking brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the
electromechanical parking brake.
If the indicator l igh t. (USA models)/ .
(Canada mode ls) turns on, t he p arking br ake
was set . If the parking brake is se t when the
ignition is
off, the indicator light turns off af­
ter abo ut 20 seconds .
The wa rn ing/i ndicator lig ht w ill go ou t when
the parking brake is re leased.
• (US A models ) ;a (Canada model s) Cau­
t ion: Vehicle parked too steep
If the indicator light b links and the message
appears, there is not enough braking power to
keep the vehicle from roll ing . T he b rakes have
ove rheated. The veh icle cou ld roll away eve n
o n a sm all incline .
Press brake pedal to relea se parking brake
To release the parking brake, press the brake
pedal and press the button(®) or start driving
with starting assist at the same time

Please release parking brake
To re lease the parking brake manually, press
the brake peda l and press the button<®) at
the same time. The parking brake only re leas­
es automatically if the driver's safety belt is

;';.![J Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
If the JjJ indicator lamp blinks while driving,
the ESC or ASR (Ant i-S lip Regulation) is active­
l y regulating.
If the
JjJ indicator lamp illuminates, the sys­
tem has switched the ESC off. In this case, you
can switch the ignition off and then on to
sw itch the ESC on again. The system is func­
tioning completely whe n the indicator lamp
sw itches off.
If the I i ndicator lamp illuminates, the ESC
was switched off with the
I ~ OFF ! button.
Stabilization cont rol (E SC/A BS): Fault! See
owner 's manu al
If the indicator light G1 and the ABS indicator
light
E (USA models) ; (IJ (Canada mod­
els) turn on and the message appears, there is
a ma lfunction in the ABS system or e lectronic
d ifferent ial lock . This also interrupts the ESC.
The brakes still function with their normal power, but ABS is no t active.
Drive to your authorized Aud i dea ler immedi ­
ately to have the malfunct ion corrected.

ABS /(8 ) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warning/indicator light E (USA mod ­
e ls)/ [§] (Canada models) wi ll come on for a
few seconds when the ignition is switched on.
The light will go out after an automatic check
sequence is completed .
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
- The warning/indicato r ligh t does not illum i­
nate w hen you switch the ignition on.
- The warning/indicator l igh t does not go out
after a few seconds .
- The warning/indicato r light i llum ina tes
while driving.
The ESC i ndicator light also illuminates if
there is a ma lfunction in the ABS. The mes­
sage
Stabi liz ation control (ESC ): Fault! See
o wn er's manual
also appea rs in the ins tru­
ment cluster d isp lay and a warning tone
sounds.
Th e brak e sys te m will still re spond even
without the a ssista nce of the AB S system.

Malfunction in th e brake system
If the brake war ning ligh t ¢page 15 and the
ABS warning illum inate
together there may be
a malfunction in the ABS , and there may a lso
be a malfunction in the brake system itself

Malfunction in th e electronic diff erential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together w ith the ABS. The
ABS warning light will come on if there is a malfunction in the EDL system ¢
page 179.
See your author ized Audi dealer as soon as
poss ible.

- I f the E (USA mode ls)/ ti] (Canada
models) warning light does not go ou t,
or if it comes on whi le driving, the ABS
-

keys. Unguarded access to the keys pro­
vides children the opportunity to start
the engine and/or activate veh icle sys­
tems such as the power windows etc. Un­ supervised operation of any vehicle sys­
tem by ch ildren can result in serious in­
jury.
- Do not remove the key from the ignition
lock until the vehicle has come to a com­
plete stop. Otherw ise the steering col­
umn lock cou ld suddenly engage -caus­
ing the risk of an accident.
(D Tips
- The operation of the remote contro l key
can be temporarily disrupted by interfer­
ence from transmit ters in the vici nity of
the vehicle working in the same frequen ­
cy range (e .g . a ce ll phone, radio equip­
ment).
- Fo r security reasons, replacement keys
are on ly available from Audi dea lers .

Locking the front pa ssenger' s door with
th e mechanical ke y
The emergency lock is located on the rear side
of the front passenger's door.
It is on ly visible
when the door is open.
• Remove the mechanical key¢

• Pull the cover cap out of the opening

• Insert the key i n the inside slot and turn it
all the way to the right.
Once the front passenger's door has been
closed, you cannot open it again from the out­
side. The door can be opened from the inside
by pulling the doo r handle.

After the ign ition is swi tched on, the pow­
er locking system switch is enab led.
Electronic immobilizer
The immobilizer prevents your vehicle from
being started by unauthorized persons.
-
I nside the key there is a computer chip. This
ch ip automatically activates/deactivates the
e lectronic immob ilizer.
Appli es to v eh icl es with ign ition lock :
The electronic immobilizer deactivates auto­
mat ica lly when you insert the remote control
key into the ignition lock.

If the remote control key is located inside the
vehicle and you press the
I START ENGINE STOPI button, the electro nic
immobilizer deactivates a utomatically. If you
switch the ignition
off and remove the remote
control key from the vehicle, the electronic immobilizer activates again automatically.
A WARNING
-
Always take the key with you when you
leave the vehicle. The key can disarm the
electronic engine immobilizer and permit
an unauthorized person to start the engine
and enable operation of the vehicle sys­
tems such as power w indow or power sun­
roof leading to serious personal injury.
© Tips
- T he veh icle cannot be started if an unau­
tho rized key is used. The vehicle may not
start if another radio device s uch as a key
for another ve hicle or a transponder is
located on the key ring .

If the engine has been under heavy load
for an extended period, heat builds up in
the engine compartment after the engine
is switched off -there is a risk of damaging
the engine. Allow the engine to run at idle
for about two minutes before switching it

Switch ing the ignition on /off
If yo u wou ld like to switch the ignition on
without starting the engine, follow these
steps:
.. Press the
!S TAR T ENGINE STOP! button
without pressing the brake peda l.
.. To switch the ignition off, press the button
again.
If the engine should not start immediately,
the starting process is automatically stopped after a short time . Repeat starting procedure.
When starting the engine, major e lectr ica l
loads are switched off temporarily. After a cold engine is started, there may be a
brief period of increased noise beca use oil
pressure must first bu ild up in the hydrau lic
valve adjusters. This is normal and not a cause
for concern .
A WARNING
=
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyx iat ion.
- Never turn off the e ngine until the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your veh icle . Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equ ipment such as th e power windows
could be ope rated. Th is can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons req uiring
a ssis tance u nattended in t he vehi cle. The
doors can be locked usi ng the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es ­
caping from the veh icle on the ir own in
the event of an emergency . Depending
on the time of year, peop le inside the ve­
hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures.

- Avoid high engine rpm, full thrott le and
heavy eng ine loads unt il the eng ine has
reached operating temperature -other­
w ise you risk engine damage.
® For the sake of the env ironment
Do not let the engine run wh ile parked to
warm up. Begin dr iving immediately. This
reduces unnecessary emissions .
¢j) Tips
- After starting a co ld engine, there may
be a brief period of increased noise be­
cause the oil pressure must fi rst bu ild up
in the hydraulic valve ad justers. This is
normal and not a cause for concern .
- If you leave the veh icle with the ignition
switched on, the ignit ion w ill switch off
afte r a certain per iod of t ime . Please

E mergenc y off
If necessary, the eng ine can be sw itched off
with the selector lever in the R or D/S pos i­
tions. To do so, step on the brake peda l and
press and hold the
I STAR T ENGINE STOP I but­
ton vehicle speed must be less than 6 mph
(10 km/h).
.&, WARNING
-Never t urn off the eng ine be fore the ve ­
hicle has come to a complete stop . The
f ull function of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed . You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usua lly would, this could
lead to c rashes and serious injur ies.
- For safety reasons, you should always
park your vehicle with the se lector lever
in P . Otherwise, the veh icle could i nad­
vertent ly roll away .
- The rad iator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 minutes eve n after you have
tu rned off the eng ine and removed the
ignition key. The radiator fan can also
turn on again i f the engine coolant hea ts
up because of intense sunlight or hea t
build -up in the engine compartment.

This message appears when the
I S TART ENGINE STOP I button is pressed if
there is no master key ins ide the ve hicle or if
the system does not recognize it . For exam­
ple, the master key cannot be recognized if it
i s covered by an object (e .g . aluminum brief
case) which
screens the radio s ignal. Electron­
ic dev ices such as cell p ho nes can also inte r­
f ere with the radio s ignal.
Pr ess brake p edal to start engine
This message appears if you do not press the
brake pedal to start the eng ine .
Shift to N or P to start engine
T h is message appears w hen a ttempt ing to
star t the eng ine if the selecto r lever for the
automatic transmiss ion is not in the P or N
pos ition . The engine can only be started with
the se lector in these positions.
Is the ke y in the vehicle ?

This message appears if the master key is re­
moved from the vehicle with the engine run­
n ing.
If the master key is no longer in the ve ­
hicle, you cannot switch on the ignition after
stopping the engine and you also cannot start
the eng ine again . Moreover, you can not lock
the veh icle from the outside w ith the key.
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if lever is not in
P.
This message appears for safety reasons
a long w ith a warning signa l. It appears if the
selector lever for the automat ic transm iss ion
is not in the P position when switch ing off the
ignition . Move the selector lever to the P pos i­
tion, othe rwise the ve hicle is not secured
against rolling away . You also cannot lock the
vehi cle using the locking bu tton* on the door
han dle or using the remote key.
Convenience key defective! Use ignition lock
This message appears if the eng ine must be
started or stopped using the ignition key and
not the
I STAR T ENGIN E ST OP ! button .
Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanicol parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

pedal and press the switch at the same time to re

Your vehicle is equipped wi th an electrome­
chanical parking brake . The parking brake is
designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling
u nintentionally and replaces the hand brake.
In addition to the normal fun ctions of a tradi­
tiona l hand b rake, the electromechanical
parking brake provides various convenience
and safety f unctions .
When starting from rest
-The integral start ing assist helps you when
driving by automatica lly re leasing the par k­
ing brake
c:> page 81, Starting from rest.
-When starting on inclines, the starting as­
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentiona l­
ly ro lling back. The braking force of the
parking brake is not released until sufficient
driving force has been built up at the
wheels.
Emergency brake function

for about 20 seconds .
A WARNING
-
If a drive range is engaged with the vehicle
stationary and the engine runn ing , you
must in no instance accelerate carelessly.
Otherwise the vehicle will start to move
i mmed iately- risk of an acc ident.

-You can apply the parking brake at any
time - even with the ignition switched
off . The ignit ion must be t urned on in or­
der to release the parking brake.
- Occasiona l noises when the parking
brake is applied and re leased are norma l
and are not a cause for concern.
- When the vehicle is parked, the parking
brake goes through a se lf-test cycle at
regular intervals. Any assoc iated noises
are norma l.

- When the veh icle is locked, no one -par­
ticularly not children should rema in in
the vehicle. Locked doors make it more
difficult for emergency wo rke rs to get in­
to the veh icle - putting lives at risk.
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .
Stopping and applying parking brake
• Pull the switch®¢ fig. 92 to app ly the
parking brake.
Sta rting and automatically rel easing the
parking brake
• When you start to drive as usual, the park­
ing brake is automatically released and your
veh icle beg ins to move .
When stopping at a traffic signal or stopping in city traff ic on vehicles with an automatic
transmission, the parking brake can be ap­ plied . The vehicle does not have to be he ld
with the footbrake. The pa rking brake elimi­
nates the tende ncy to creep w ith a dr ive range
engaged. As soon as yo u drive off as usu al,
t h e parking bra ke is re leased automatic ally
and the vehicle starts to move.
Starting on slopes
When starting on inclines, the sta rting assist
prevents t he vehi cle from u nintent ionally roll­
ing back. The bra king force of the par kin g
brake is no t re leased unti l su ff ic ient d riving
f orce has been built up at the wheels.

F o r safety reaso ns, t he pa rking br ake is re­
l eased automatic ally o nly when the d riv­
e r's safety belt is engaged in the buckle .

Switching on
The cruise control system makes it possible to
drive at a constant speed starting at 20 mph
(30 km/h).

The stored speed and the green symbol

your veh icle.
The speed is kept constant by modifying en­
gine power or through an active brake inter­
vention.
A WARNING
- Always pay attention to the traffic
around you when the cruise control is in
operation. You are always responsible for
your speed and the distance between
your vehicle and other vehicles. -
For reasons of safety , cruise control
should not be used in the city, in stop­
and-go traffic, on twisting roads and
when road conditions are poor (such as ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
plan ing) - risk of accident.
- Turn off the cruise control temporarily
when enter ing turn lanes, highway exit
lanes or in constr uction zones .
- Please note that inadve rtently "resting"
your foot on the accelerator pedal causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is
because the cruise control is overridden
by the drive r's acceleration.
- If a brake system malfunction such as
overheating occurs when the cruise con­
trol system is switched on, the braking
function in the system may be switched
off . The other cruise control functions re­
main active as long as the indicator light
[ff;(l)~i4 (US models) ;B (Canadian mod­
els) is on.

The brake lights illuminate as soon as th e
brakes app ly automatically.
Changing speed

hold the lever in the
010 direction until
the desired speed is displayed.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down
to increase your speed, e .g. if you want to
pass someone. The speed you saved earlier
will res ume as soon as you let off of the acce l­
erator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by
6 mph (10 km/h) for longer than 5 minutes,
the cruise control wil l be turned off tempora­
rily. The green symbol in the disp lay turns
white. The saved speed remains the same.
