Different pork assist systems may be used for
parking or maneuvering, depending on the vehi­
cle's features.
Pa rking system (rear)*:
F or the parking system (rear), the aco ustic par k
assist system is insta lled in the rear of t he vehicle
¢ page 106.
The re ar p arking ass ist system uses ultrasoni c
sensors to determ ine the distance of the veh icle
from a detected obstacle. There are a total of
four sensors located on the rear bumper (two in
the middle and two on the sides) .

For the parking system (rear, with rear view cam ­
era),
the rear acoustic park ass ist system is inte­
grated i n the rear of the vehicle and the rear v iew
camera is integrated in the rear lid

The parking system (rear, with rear view camera)
uses ultrasonic sensors to determine the distance
of the vehicle from a detected obstacle. There are
a total of four sensors located on the rear bump­
er ( two in t he middle and two on the s ides) .

Rear parking system
Rear acoustic park assist

The rear acoustic pork assist warns you of obsta­
cles or objects behind your car.
Description
T he rear acoustic p arki ng ass is t system deter­

Reversing
D istance warning when reve rsing starts when an
obstacle is detected in t he range of the parking
ass ist system . As the distance dec reases, th e
tim e inte rva l between the a udible tones becomes
s h ort er.
When the distance is less than 1ft (0 .30 m) , the
tone becomes cont inuo us. At this poin t you
shou ld stop bac king up .
Please note that low objects already signa lled by
a war ning can d isappear from the system's detec ­
tion ra nge and will not continue to be sig na lled .
If the distance to an obstacle remains the same,
the volume of the d ista nce warning is gradually
reduced after abo ut 4 seconds (this does not ap­
ply i n the continous tone rang e). App roach ing an­
othe r obstacle will res ult in the distance wa rning
sou nd ing a t the normal volume aga in.
Malfunctions in the system
If a warning tone is aud ible for about five sec­
o nds when you turn on the ignition, the re is a
malfu nction in the system . Have th e problem co r­
r e cted by your author ized Audi deal er.
Keep the senso rs in the rea r bumper clea n and
free from ice so that the aco ust ic par k assist sys -
tem ca n fu nction properly .

-Sensors have dead spaces in which objects
cannot be detected . Be especially alert for
small chi ldren and animals, since they are
not always detected by the sensors .
- The acoustic parking system is not a substi­
tute for the dr iver's own caution and alert­
ness. Ultimate responsibility always remains
with the driver during parking and sim ilar
maneuvers . A lways watch where you are
dr iv ing .
- You should always adjust the volume and
frequency of the warning tones so that you
can eas ily hear the acoustic distance warn­
ing
even if the radio is playing, the air-cond i­
tioner blower is on High or there is a high
level of outs ide no ise.
- Check the settings whenever anyone else
has driven the vehicle be fore you.
(D Note
- Remember that low obstacles for whic h a
warning has already been issued may "dive"
below the system 's sensing zone if the vehi­
cle is being backed up closer . In this case,
the warn ing sound shutting off does
not in­
dicate that you have cleared the obstacle.
Instead, impact is imm inent.
- Objects such as trailer h itches, cha ins, nar ­
row posts or fences covered by a thin layer
of pa int may not a lways be detected by the
system. They can still damage your vehicle
wi thou t warn ing.

Keep the sensors in the rear bumper clean
and free of snow and ice so that the acoust ic
parking assist system can f unction properly.
Adjusting the warning tones

Parking Sy stem

active audio source is lowered.
The newly adjusted value is briefly hea rd from
the signal generator . T he settings are automat i­

Vehicles with the parking system are equipped
with a
rear vi ew ca mera in addi tion to the acous­
t ic pa rking system.
You can choose between two modes to ass ist you
with pa rking. For example, you can use "parking
mode l" when park ing in a parking sp ace or ga­
rage ¢

A WARNING
-
- The rear view camera has blind spots, in
which objects cannot be detected. Be espe­
cially careful to check for small children and
animals before backing up. Small children and animals will not always be detected by
the sensors.

Sensors in the bumper
Sensors are located in the rear bumpers . If these
detect an obstacle, audible signals warn you . The
range at which the sensors begin to measure is
approximately:
To the side 2 ft (0.60 m)
Center rear 5.2 ft (1.60 m)
Distance warning when reversing starts when an
obstacle is detected in the range of the parking

assist system. As the distance decreases, the
time interval between the audible tones becomes
shorter.
When the distance is less than 1ft (0.30 m), the
tone becomes continuous. At this point you
should stop backing up.
If the distance to an obstacle stays the same, the
volume of the distance signal chime is gradually
reduced after about 4 seconds (does not affect
the continuous signal tone). Approaching anoth­
er obstacle will cause the distance signal to
sound again at the normal volume.
Rear view camera coverage area
The MMI display shows the area covered by the
rear v iew camera
c::> fig. 123 @. Objects that are
not in the area covered @are not shown on the
MMI display.
We recommend that you practice parking with
the rear view camera in a traffic-free location or
parking lot to become familiar with the system,
the orientation lines, and their function. When
doing this, there should be good light and weath­
er conditions.
In the MMI display, objects or vehicles appear
closer or further away if:
-you are driving in reverse gear from a level sur­
face onto an incline, or a downward slope,
- you are driving in reverse gear toward protrud­
ing objects,
- the vehicle is carrying too much load in the
rear.
The accuracy of the orientation lines and blue
surfaces diminishes if:
- the rear view camera does not provide a reliable
image, for example, in poor visibility conditions
or if the lens is dirty,
- the image on the screen is not visible due to sun glare and reflection .
Caring for the rear view camera lens
The rear view camera is located above the rear li­
cense plate bracket. For the parking assist to op-
erate, the lens

based glass cleaner, and clean the lens with a
dry cloth

erably with a de-icing spray

A WARNING
- The parking aid cannot replace the driver's
attent ion. The driver alone is responsible for
park ing and s imilar driving maneuvers .
-Always keep your eyes on the veh icle's sur­
roundings, using the rear view m irror as
well.
- Do not allow yourself to be distracted from
traffic by the rear view camera pictures.
- If the posit ion and the installation ang le of
the camera has c hanged, for example, after
a rear end collision, do not continue to use
the system for safety reasons. Have it
checked by a qualified deale rship .
@ Note
-Low obstacles already signaled by a warning
can d isappear from the system's detection
range as they are approached and will not
continue to be signa led. Objects such as
barrier chains, tra ile r draw bars, thin paint­
ed vertical po les or fences may not be de­
tec ted by the sys tem, posing r isk of dam­
age.
- Never use warm or hot w ater to remove
snow or ice from the rear view camera lens -
danger of crack formation on the lens!
- When cleaning the lens, never use products
that are abrasive .
Switching on/off
Applies to vehicles: with parking system (rear, with rear view
camera)
The rear view camera switches on automatically
together with the acoustic park assist when you
put the vehicle in reverse.

automatically after a period of about 15 sec­

If the warning message appears in the display
but not the rear view camera p icture, read and
confirm the warning message . The acoustic d is­
tance signal is always active .
If you press a function button on the MMI contro l
console, the rear view camera picture disappears.
The rear v iew camera p icture reappears the next
time you park .

A WARNING
--
- On ly use the rearview camera to assist you if
it shows a good, clea r picture . For example,
the image may be affected by the su n shi n­
ing into the le ns, dirt on the lens o r if the re
is a defec t.
- Use the rea rv iew camera only with the rear
lid comple tely closed . Make sure any objects
you m ay have moun ted on the rea r lid do
not block the rearv iew camera .

-The rear view camera picture is available as
soo n as the MMI Di splay o r th e MMI is
switched on, or the s tart- up pha se is com ­
ple ted.
- The sensors m ust be ke pt clean and free of

The active rollover protection system provides
addit ional safety in the event of a rollover. W ith in
m ill iseconds, sensors deploy two rollbars located
behind the headrests in the rear seats ¢
fig. 133.
The rollbars, reinforced windshield frame and
belt tens ioners help protect front and rear pas­
sengers in the event of a rollover .
The rollover protection system functions when
the power top is both open and closed.
A WARNING
-

over pro tect ion system is triggered, objects
placed there can be pro pelled th roug h the

hicle and make it more difficult for the roll ­
bars to deploy . This increases the risk for seri­
ous or life-threaten ing injur ies.
When is rollover protection deployed?
Rollover protection deploys in a collision or roll­
over.
Depending on the coll is ion, sensors throughou t
the vehicle and the control mod ule tr igger the
rollover system to deploy.
For safety reasons, ro llover protect ion a lso de­
p loys during front, side and rear coll is ions above
a certa in leve l of severi ty .

If the rollover p rotection has tr iggered but the
vehicle was not involved in an accident, you can
retract the rollover protection yourself in an
emergency. Drive to your authorized Audi dealer
or qualified repair facility immed iate ly to have
the malfunct ion corrected.
With the power top open

row and hold it in place

Never unfasten safety belt while the veh icle is
moving . Doing so will increase your risk of be­
ing injured or killed.

Incorrectly positioned safety belts can cause se­
vere injuries .
Wearing safety belts improperly can cause seri­
ous injury or death. Safe ty belts can only work
when they are correctly posit ioned on the body .
Improper seating pos it ions reduce the effective­
ness of safety belts and will even inc rease the risk
of injury and death by moving the safety be lt to
cr itica l areas of the body . Improper seati ng posi­
tions a lso increase the risk of serious injury and
death when an airbag deploys and strikes an oc­
cupant who is not in the correct seating position.
A driver is responsible for the safety of all vehicle
occupants and espec ially for children. Therefore :
.. Never perm it anyone to ass ume an incorrect sit -
ting position in the vehicle while traveling

Belt tensioners
How safety belt pretensioners work
In front, side and rear-end collisions above a
particular sev erity, saf ety belts are tensioned au­
tomatically .
The safety belts are equipped with safety belt
pre tensioners. The system is act ivated by sensors
in front, side and rear-end collisions o f great se ­
verity. This tightens the belt and takes up belt
s lack
¢ .&. in Service and disposal of safety belt
pretensioner on page 131.
Taking up the slack
helps to reduce forward occupan t movement dur­
i ng a collision .
@ Note
Never let the belt remain over a rear seatback
that has been folded forward.
@ Tips
The safety belt pretensioner can only be acti­
vated once.
- In minor frontal and side collisions, in rear­
end co llisions and in accidents involving
very little impact force, the safety belt pre­
tensioner are not activated.
- When the safety belt pretensioners are acti­ vated, a fine dust is released . This is normal
and is not caused by a fire in the vehicle .
- The re levant safety requirements must be
observed when the vehicle or components
of the system are scrapped. An authorized
Audi dealer or qua lified workshop is familiar
with these regulations a nd will be pleased
to pass on the information to yo u. ...

detail below . Because the front passenger seat
contains important parts of the Advanced Airbag
System, yo u must take care to prevent it from be­
ing damaged. Damage to the seat may prevent
the Advanced Airbag for the front passenger seat
from do ing its job in a crash .
The front Ad vanced Airb ag S ystem con sis ts
of the following :
-Crash sensors in the front of the veh icle that
measure veh icle acceleration/deceleration to
provide information to the Advanced Airbag
System about the severity of the crash .
- An electronic control unit, with integrated
crash sensors for front and side impacts . The
control unit "decides" whether to fire the front
airbags based on the information received from
the crash sensors . T he control un it also "de­
cides" whether the safety be lt pretensioners
sho uld be activated.
- An Advanced Airbag with gas generator and
control valve for the driver inside the steering
whee l hub.
- An Advanced Airbag with gas generator and
control valve inside the instrument panel for
t h e front passenger.
- A weig ht-sensing mat under the upholstery
padding of the front passenger seat cushion
that meas ures the tota l weight on the seat. The
information registered is sent cont in uous ly to
the e lectronic control unit to regulate dep loy­
ment of the front Advanced Airbag on the pas­
senger side.
- An airbag monitoring system and indicator
light in the instrument cluster
¢ page 142.
-A sensor in each front seat registers the dis­
tance between the respect ive seat and the
steering wheel or instrument panel. The infor­
mation registered is sent cont inuously to the
elect ron ic cont ro l unit to regulate deployment
of the front Advanced Airbags.
- T he
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes on
and stays on in the center of the i nstrument
pane l¢
page 142, fig . 150 and tells you when
the front Advanced Ai rbag on the passenger
side has been turned
off .
-A sensor below the safety belt la tch fo r the
front seat passenge r to measure the tension on
Airbag syste m
the sa fe ty belt. The tens ion on the safety be lt
and the weight registe red by the weight -sens­
ing mat help the control unit "decide" whether
the front a irbag for the front passenger seat
should be turned
off or not¢ page 133, Child
restraints on the front seat- some important things to know.
- A sensor in the safety belt latch for the driver
and for the front seat passenger that senses
whether that safety belt is latched or not and
transm its this informat ion to the elect ro nic
cont ro l unit.
A WARNING
D amage to the fron t passenger seat can pre­
vent the fron t air bag from working prope rly.
- Imp roper repai r or d isassembly of the front
passenger and driver sea t will prevent the
Advanced Airbag System from functioning properly .
- Repairs to the front passenge r seat must be
performed by qualified and p roperly trained
workshop personne l.
- Never remove the front passenger or driver seat from the vehicle .
- Never remove the upho lstery from the front
passenger seat.
- Never d isassemble o r remove par ts from the
seat or disconnect w ires from it.
- Never carry sh arp objects in yo ur po ckets or
p la ce them on t he seat.
If the weight-sens­
ing mat in the passenger seat is punctu red
it cannot work properly .
- Never carry things on yo ur lap or carry ob ­
jects on the passenger seat. S uch items can
increase the we ight registe red by the
weight-sensing mat and send the wrong in­
formation to the a irbag control unit.
- Never store items under the front passenger
seat . Parts of the Advanced Airbag System
under the passenger seat could be dam­
aged, p reventing them and the airbag sys­
tem from wo rking prope rly.
- Never p lace seat covers or rep lacement up­
holstery that have not been specifically ap­
p roved by Aud i on the front seats.
- Seat cove rs can prevent the Advanced Air­
bag Sys tem from recogniz ing child

restraints or occupants on the front passen­
ger seat and prevent the side airbag in the
seat backrest from deploying properly.
- Never use cushions, pillows, blankets or
similar items on the front passenger seat.
The additional padding will prevent the
weight-sensing mat in the seat from accu­ rately registering the child restraint or per­
son on the seat and prevent the Advanced
Airbag System from functioning properly.
- If you must use a child restraint on the front
passenger seat and the child restraint man­
ufacturer's instructions require the use of a
towel, foam cushion or something else to
properly position the child restraint, make
certain that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light comes on and stays on whenever the
child restraint is installed on the front pas­
senger seat.
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does
not come on and stay on, immediately in­
stall child restraint in a rear seating position
and have the airbag system inspected by
your authorized Audi dealer.
How the Advanced Airbag System
components work together
The front Advanced Airbag System and the side
airbags supplement the protection offered by the
front three-point safety belts with pretensioners and load limiters and the adjustable head re­
straints to help reduce the risk of injury in a wide
range of accident and crash situations. Be sure to
read the important information about safety and
heed the WARNINGS in this chapter.
Deployment of the Advanced Airbag System and
the activation of the safety belt pretensioners de­
pend on the deceleration measured by the crash
sensors and registered by the electronic control
unit . Crash severity depends on speed and decel­
eration as well as the mass and stiffness of the
vehicle or object involved in the crash.
On the passenger side, regardless of safety belt
use, the airbag will be turned off if the weight on
the passenger seat is less than the amount pro­
grammed in the electronic control unit . The front

airbag on the passenger side will also be turned
off if one of the child safety seats that has been
certified under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety
Standard 208 has been recognized on the seat.
The
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes on
and stays on to tell you when the front Advanced
Airbag on the passenger side has been turned off

To reduce the risk of injury when an airbag in­
flates, always wear safety belts properly.
- If you are unrestrained, leaning forward, sit­
ting sideways or out of position in any way,
your risk of injury is much higher.
- You
will also receive serious injuries and
could even be killed if you are up against the
airbag or too close to it when it inflates -
even with an Advanced Airbag

airbags

Safety belts are important to help keep front seat
occupants in the proper seated position so that
airbags can unfold properly and provide supple­
mental protection in a frontal collision.
The front airbags are designed to provide addi­
tiona l protection for the chest and face of the
driver and the front seat passenger when:
- safety belts are worn properly,
- the seats have been positioned so that the oc-

Airb ag syst em
-Never place or attach accessories or other
objects (such as cupholders, telephone
brackets, large, heavy or bulky objects) on
the doors, over or near the area marked "AIRBAG" on the steer ing wheel, instru­
ment pane l, seat backrests or between
those areas and yourself. These obje cts
could cause injury in a crash, e specially
when the airbags inflate.
- Never recline the front passenger's seat to
transport objec ts . Items can also move into
t h e area of the side airbag or the front air ­
bag dur ing braking or in a sudden maneu·
ver. Objects near the airbags can become
projectiles and cause injury, part icularly
when the seat is reclined.
A WARNING
The f ine dust created when a irbags dep loy can
cause breathing problems for people with a
history of asthma or other breathing condi­
tions .
- To reduce the r isk of breathing problems,
those w ith asthma or other resp iratory con­
ditions should g et fr esh air r ight away by
get ting out of the vehicle o r opening w in ­
dows or door s.
- If you are in a col lision in w hich a irbags de­
p loy, wash your hand s and fa ce wi th mild
soap and water before eating.
- Be caref ul not to get the dus t into you r eyes,
or into any cuts or s cratches.
- If the residue should get into you r eyes,
flush them with water.
Monitoring the
Advanced Airbag System
Airbag monitoring indicator light
Two separa te indicators monitor the function of
the Advanced Airbag System: the airbag moni­
toring indicator light and the
PASSENGER AIR
BAG OFF
light.
The Advanced Airbag System (including the elec· tronic control unit, sensor circuits and system
w iri ng) is monitored cont inuous ly to make sure
that it is funct ion ing properly whenever the ign i·

tion is on . Each time you t urn on the ignit ion, the
fl airbag monitoring indicator light wi ll come on
for a few seconds (self diagnostics).
The sy stem must be inspected when th e II
indicator light :
-does not come on when the ignition is sw itched
on,
- does not go out a few seconds after you have
switched on t he ignit ion, or
- comes on wh ile driving.
If an airbag system malfunction is detected, t he
i ndic ator light will fi rst s tart flashing to catch the
dr ive r's at ten tion and the n stay on con tinuou sly
to serve as a constant reminder to have the sys ­
tem inspected immediately .
If a malfu nction occurs that turns the front air ­
bag on the passenge r side off, the
PASSENGER
AIR BAG OFF
light will come on and stay on
whenever the ignit ion is on .
A WARNING
An airbag system that is not functioning prop­
erly cannot provide supp lemental protection
in a frontal crash.

comes when the vehicle is being used, have
the system inspected immediately by your
author ized Audi dealer .
It is possible that
the airbag will inflate when it is not sup·
posed to, or will not inflate when it should.
