Warm and cold Deluxe automatic
climate control
Description
Appl ies to vehicles: with deluxe automatic cl imate contro l
The climate control system can be u sed to set
a comfortable temperature inside the vehicle.
The climate control system is a comb inat ion
of a heating and ventilation system as well a
coo ling system respons ible for dehum idifying
and cool ing the a ir inside the vehicle.
The automat ic climate co ntrol system auto­
mat ica lly ma inta ins a temperature once it has
been set. The temperature of t he a ir from the
ve nts, fan speed (ai r volume) and air dis trib u­
tion are also au toma tic ally adjusted . The sys ­
tem a lso takes into account strong sun light so
that manua l adjustment is not necessary . So
in almost a ll cases,
automatic mode offers
the best cond itions for the comfort of the oc­
cupa nts at all t imes of the year
c;, page 81 .
Please note the following:
The cooling mode lowers the hum idi ty leve l
ins ide the veh icle. This p reven ts fogging up of
the windows .
I n t he case of high outside humidity and tem­
pe rat ures,
condensation c an drip from the air
conditioning sys tem evaporator and form a
pool under the vehicle. This is normal and not
an indication of leaks!
A t l ow ou ts ide temper atures, the f an au to­
mat ica lly switches to a higher speed when the
coolant reac hes a sufficient temperature ex ­
cept in the defroster pos ition.
W hen sta rting with full thro ttle, the compres­
sor of the automatic clima te con trol sys tem is
temporari ly switched off to achieve f ull en­
g ine power.
To ensure eng ine cooling when the eng ine is
under an extreme load, the compressor is
switched off at high coolant temperatures .

Pollutant filter
The poll uta nt fi lter ( part icle fi lter) ensures
that imp urities in t he outside air (e .g. dust,
po llen) and odors are significantly reduced or
stopped . The air is also fi ltered in recircu lation
mode.
T he poll utant fi lter element m ust be changed
at the intervals specified in the service p lan so
that the perfo rmance of the a utomatic cli­
mate control system is not impaired.
If the effectiveness of the filter decreases pre ­
maturely due to operation of the vehicle in
areas with significant poll ution, the filter e le­
ment must be changed between the specified
serv ice dates.
Key recognition
T he c urrent automatic climate contro l set ­
tings are automatically stored and assigned to
the maste r key .
Energy management
To p reven t the bat tery from being discharged
and to res to re the ba lance o f energy, compo ­
nents which require large amo unts o f energy
are temporarily cut bac k or switched off
¢ page 211. Heating systems in particular re ­
quire a great deal of energy. If yo u notice, for
example, that the rear window heater is not
heating, then it has been temporarily reduced
o r switched off by
energy management.
T hese systems a re available again as soon as
the ene rgy balance has been res to red.

clear of i ce, snow, and con densa tion . Only
the n can good v is ib ility be ensured . Famili­
a rize yourself w ith the correct operation of
the automatic climate contro l system as
well as the proper procedure for defog­
g ing/defrosting the windows .

With this setting, you attain maximum com­
fort in the least amo unt of time. Change this
setting, as des ired, to meet yo ur persona l
needs.
The climate controls are a combination of heating, venti lation and cooling systems,
which automatica lly reduce hum idity and cool
the air inside your vehicle.
The climate control automatically maintains a
temperature once it has been set . The tem­
perature of the air from the vents, fan speed
(air volume) and air distribution are also auto­
mat ically adjusted . The system also takes into
account strong sunshine so that manual ad­
justment is not necessary . So in almost all
cases,
autom atic mo de offers the best cond i­
tions for the comfo rt of the occupants at all
times of the year¢
page 86.
Please note the following :
Turn on the air cond itioner to reduce hum idity
in the vehicle . Th is also prevents the w indows
from fogging up.
When the outside temperature is high and the
a ir is very hum id,
conden sation from the
evaporator may drip under the vehicle. This is normal and does not indicate a leak .
If the outside temperature is low, the fan nor­
mally only switches to a h igher speed once
the eng ine coolant has warmed up sufficient­
ly .
The air conditioner temporarily switches off
when you drive off from a standstill using full
thrott le to save engine power.
The compressor also switches off if the cool­
ant temperature is too high, so that the en ­
g ine can be adequately coo led under extreme
loads.
Du st and pollen filter
The dust and pollen filter (a combined particle
fi lter and activated charcoal filter) reduces or
prevents outside air pollut ion (dust, or po llen)
from entering the vehicle . T
he dust and po llen fi lter must be changed at
the interva ls specified in your Mai ntenance
booklet , so that the air conditioner can prop­
erly work.
If you drive your vehicle in an area with a high
degree of air pollution, the filter may need to
be changed more frequently than specif ied in
your Audi Warranty
& Maintenance book let. If
in doubt, ask your authorized Audi Service Ad­
visor fo r advice .
Key recognition
The current climate contro l settings are auto ­
matically stored and assigned to the remote
key
Energy management
T o prevent the battery from being discharged
and to resto re the ba lance of energy, compo ­
nents which require large amo unts of energy
are temporarily cut back or switched off
¢ page 211. Heat ing systems in particular re­
quire a great deal of energy. If you notice, for
example, that the rear w indow heater is not
heating, then it has bee n tempora rily cut back
o r switched off by

These sys tems are available again as soon as
the energy balance has been resto red.

proper use and function of the heating

how to defog and defrost the w indows.
- Never use the windshield wipe r/washer
system in freez ing weather unt il you
have warmed the windshie ld first, using
the heating and ventilation system. The
washer sol ution may freeze on the w ind-
shie ld and red uce visib ility.

Manually adjustable steering wheel
The height and reach of the steering wheel
can be adjusted .

There must be at least 10 inches (25 cm) be­ tween your chest and the center of the steer­
ing wheel. If you cannot si t more than 10 in­
ches (25 cm) from the steering whee l, see if
adaptive equipment is available to help you
reach the pedals and increase the distance
from the steering whee l.

driver's seat, see
o page 63.
The steering wheel can be adjusted even when
the ign ition is turned off. For vehicles wi th
seat memory, the individual positions for the
steering wheel can be stored a long with the
seat position .
A WARNING
Improper use of steering wheel adjust­
ment and improper seating position can
cause serious personal injury .
-Adjust the steer ing whee l co lumn on ly
when the vehicle is not moving to pre­
vent loss of veh icle control.
-
- Adjust the driver's seat or steering whee l
so that there is a m inimum of 10 inches
(25 cm) between your chest and the
steer ing whee l

you cannot maintain th is m inimum dis­
tance, the a irbag system cannot protect
you properly.
- If physical limitations prevent you from
sitting 10 inches (25 cm) or more from
the steering wheel, check with your au­
thorized Audi dealer to see if adaptive equ ipment is ava ilable .
- If the steer ing whee l is aligned with your
face, the supplementa l dr iver's a irbag
cannot provide as much protection in an
accident. Always make sure that the
steer ing whee l is aligned with your
chest .
- Always hold the steering wheel with your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi­
tions to reduce the risk of persona l injury
if the driver's airbag deploys.
- Never hold the steering wheel at the 12 o'clock position or with your hands inside
the steeri ng wheel rim or on the steering
wheel hub. Holding the steer ing wheel
the wrong way can cause serious injuries
to the hands, arms and head if the driv­
er's airbag deploys.
Ignition lock and ignition switch
Starting engine with the key
The igni tion is switched on and the engine
started with the ignition key .

By pressing the key
without stepp ing on the
clutch or the brake, the ig nition is switched o n
and off. With the ignit io n on, t he steer ing
wheel is un locked.
You can only remove the key w ith the ignition
sw itched off . T o do this, you have to p ress on
the key aga in. Wi th an a utomat ic transm is­
sion, the se lecto r lever must be in the
P posi­
tion .
When starting the engine, ma jor e lectr ica l
l oads are switched off tempo ra rily .
After start ing a cold engine, there may be a
brief period of increased no ise because the oi l
p ressu re must fi rst build up in the hydraulic
va lve adjusters. This is normal and not a cause
fo r concern.
If the engine should not start immediately,
the starting p rocess is automatically stopped
after a sho rt time . Repeat sta rting p rocedu re.

Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appea rs if you do not step on
the brake pedal to sta rt the eng ine on a veh i­
cle with an automat ic transm iss ion.
Press clutch pedal to start engine
This message appears if you do not step on
the clutch peda l to start the engine on a ve hi­
cle with a manua l transm ission .
Engage Nor P to start engine
T his message appears when attempting to
start the engine if the se lector lever for the
automatic transmission is not in the
P or N

could be operated. This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons re quiring
assistance unattended in the ve hicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es­ caping from t he veh icle on t heir own in
the ev ent of an e merge ncy. D epe nding
on t he time of yea r, peop le inside the ve­
hicle can be expo sed to very high o r very
low tempe ra tur es.
- Never re mo ve the ign ition key from the
ig nition lo ok while the veh icle i s m oving .
O the rwise, the s teering lock could su d­
d enly en gage and yo u wo uld not be a ble
to steer the vehicle .

To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to reduce exhaust emissions, do not let your
veh icle stand and warm up. Be ready to
drive off immediately after start ing your
veh icle. Maintain moderate speed until the
engine is comp letely warm. Remember,
the engine performs best at operating
temperature.
@ Tips
- If the key cannot be removed from the
ignition lock, you have to pull the me­
chanical key out of the master key in or­
der to be ab le to loc k the vehicle The ve­
hicle can be locked with the mechanica l
key

Stopping the engine

Emergency off
If it is necessary in unusual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off wh ile the vehicle is
mov ing . The engine will be switched off if you
p ress on the key for an extended period .

-Never turn off the eng ine unti l the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- T he brake booster and se rvotronic only
work when the engine is running. With
the ignition turned off, you have to apply
more force when steering or braking .
Since you cannot steer and stop norma l­
ly, this can lead to accidents and serious
injuries. -
The radiator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the
ignit ion key. The radiator fan can also
turn on again if the engine coolant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
bu ild-up in the engine compa rtment.
(D Note
Do not stop the engine immediately after
hard or extended driving . Keep the engine
runn ing for approximate ly two minutes to
prevent excess ive heat bu ild-up .

After a cold engine is star ted, there may be a
brief period of increased noise because oil
pressure must first bui ld up in the hydraulic

fere wi th the radio signal.

If necessary, the engine can be switched off

tions. To do so, step on the brake pedal and press and hold the

10 km/h.

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The ele ctromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

pedal and press the switch at the same t ime

Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome­ chanical parking brake . The parking brake is
designed to p revent the veh icle from rolling
u nintentionally and replaces the hand b rake. .,..

In addition to the norma l functions of a tradi­
tional hand brake, the electromechanica l
parking brake provides various convenience
and safety functions.
When start ing f rom re st
- T he integ ral starting assist helps you when
driving by automatically releasing the park ­
ing brake ¢

-When starting on inclines, the starting as­
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentional­
l y rolling back. The braking force of the
parking brake is not released until sufficient
driv ing force has been built up at the
wheels .

can be slowed down even if the
normal brakes

Indicator light s
-If the parking brake is closed w ith the igni­

for about 20 seconds.
A WARNING
If a gear or a drive range (automat ic trans­
m ission) is engaged with the vehicle sta­
tionary and the engine run ning, you must
in no inst ance accelerate o r release the
cl utch carelessly. Otherwise the veh icle
wi ll start to move immediately -risk of an
accident.

Various rules apply to prevent the parked ve­
hicle from rolling away accidentally.

children could start the eng ine, release
the park ing brake or operate electrical
equ ipme nt (e.g. power windows). There
is the risk of an acc ident.

In certain situations, the braking power of the
adaptive cruise control is not sufficient to
maintain an adequate distance from the ob­
ject ahead . In this situation, the adaptive
cru ise control calls on
you as the driver to take
action.

-If the adaptive cruise control initiates
braking, the hydraulic brake system is
under pressure . Th erefore, the brake
pedal distance is shorter and the pedal
"feels" harder.
- Adaptive cruise contro l is swi tched off af ­
ter pressing the footbrake. The speed
saved up this point can be resumed.
- To resume the saved speed, re lease the
brake pedal and press the control lever

- If you use the accelerator to go faster
than the speed of the object ahead of
you, the
driver intervention prompt will
not be accompan ied by a warn ing signal.
- If the speed you previously set is exceed­

The settings of the Audi braking guard are

Switching the system on and off

the system is not available due to a malfunc­
tion or if you switch the ESP/ ASR
