Automatic mode ma inta ins a constant tem­
peratu re inside the vehi cle. Air temperature,
a irflow and air d istribution are controlled au­
tomatically.
Adjusting th e tempe ratur e
Temperatures between 60 °F (+16 °C) and
84 °F ( +28 °C) can be set . Outside of this
range,
L O or HI will appear in the cl imate con­
trol system disp lay. At both of these settings,
the climate control system runs continuously
at maximum cooling or heating power . There
is no temperature regu lation.
~ Ad just ing the airflow
You can adjust the airflow manually to su it
your needs . To have the airflow regulated au­
tomatically, press the IAUTO ! button.
~Adjusting the air distribution
You can manually se lect the vents where the
a ir will flow. To have the air d istr ibution regu­
l ated automatically, press the
IAU TOI button .
~ Adjusting seat heat ing *
Pressing the button switches the seat heating
on at the highest sett ing (level 3). The LEDs
indicate the temperature leve l. To reduce the
temperature, press the button again . To
switch the seat heating off , press the button
repeatedly unt il the L ED turns off.
After 10 minutes , the seat heat ing automati­
cally switches from level 3 to level 2.
I @ FRON T I Switch the d efro ster on /off
The windshield and s ide windows are defrost­
ed or cleared of condensation as quickly as
possible. The max imum amount of air flows
mainly from the vents below the windsh ield.
Recirculation mode switches off . T he tempera­
ture is controlled a utomat ica lly.

lmn R EAR ! Switching rear window heater
on /off
T he rea r window heater on ly operates when
the engine is running. It sw itches off auto ­
matically after a few m inutes, depending on
the outs ide temperature .
T o p reven t the re ar window heater from
switching off automatically, press and hold
the
l oo REARI b utton for more than 2 seconds .
This remains stored until the ign ition is
switched off .
Air vents
You can open and close the center and rear air
vents using the thumbwheels . The levers ad­
just the direction of the airflow from the
vents.
In vehicles with a 3 -zone deluxe automatic cli­
mate control system*, you can adjust the air
temperature in the rear by turning the thumb­
whee l toward the red side to make it warmer
or toward t he blue side to make it coo ler.
A WARNING ...
- Do not use the recircu lation for extended
pe riods of time . The windows could fog
up since no fresh a ir can enter the vehi­
cle .
If the windows fog up, press the air
reci rculation button aga in immediately
to switch off the air reci rc u lation func­
tion or se lect defrost .
- I ndividuals w ith red uced sensitivity to
pa in or temperature cou ld deve lop burns
when using t he seat heating function. To
red uce the risk of injury, these individu­
a ls shou ld not use seat heating.

i n the seats, do not kneel on the seats or
place heavy loads on a small area of the

Manually adjustable steering wheel
The steering wheel position is fully adjustable
up and down and forward and back.

tions to redu ce the risk of persona l injury
if the driver's airbag dep loys .
- N ever hold the stee ring wheel at the 12
o' clock posi tion or wi th your hands in si de
the stee rin g wheel rim or on t he steering
wheel h ub. Holding the steering whee l
the wrong way can cause se rious injuries
to the hands, arms and head if the driv­
er 's airbag deploys.

If you wou ld like to switch the ignition on
without starting the engine, follow these
steps :
• Inse rt the key into the ignition lock .
• Press the key briefly
wi thout pressing the
c lutch pedal (for man ual transmissions) or
the brake peda l (for automatic transmis­
s ions) .
• To sw itch the igni tion off, press the key
again.
When starting the engine, major e lectr ical
loads are swi tched off temporarily .
You can on ly remove the key with the ignition
switched off.
I f the engine should not sta rt immediately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time. Repeat starting procedure .
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation .
- Never remove the ign ition key from the
ignition look whi le the vehicle is moving.
Otherw ise, the steering lock cou ld sud­
denly engage and you would not be able
to steer the vehicle.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle . Otherwise, the
engine could be started or electr ica l

Starting the vehicle with the emergency
key

You can use the emergency key as an ignition

Ste ering lock
The steering locks when yo u remove the ig ni­
tion key . The lo cked steering helps prevent ve ­
hicle theft .
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unus ual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the veh icle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period .
A WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a comp lete stop. The
full funct ion of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed . You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually wo uld, this could
lead to crashes and ser ious injuries.
- For safety reasons , you should always
pa rk your vehicle w ith the selector lever
in P . Otherwise, the vehicle could inad ­
verten tly roll away .
- The radiator fan can continue to run fo r
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the ignition key. The radiator fan can a lso
turn on again if the engine coo lant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
build-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equipment such as the power windows
could be operated . This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote

start the engine if the selector lever for the

position. The engine can on ly be started with
the selector in these posi tions.

moved from the vehicle with the eng ine run­
n ing .
If the master key is no longer in the ve ­
hi cle, yo u cannot swit ch o n the ignition after
stopping the engine and you also cannot star t
the engine again. Moreover, yo u cannot lock
the vehicle from the outside with the key .

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

The speed is kept constant by modifying en­
gine power or through an active brake inter­
vention.
A WARNING
-- Always pay attent ion to the traffic
around you when the cruise control is in
operation. You are always responsible for
your speed and the distance between
your veh icle and other vehicles.
- For reasons of safety, cruise control
should not be used in t he city, in stop­
and-go traffic, on twisting roads and
when road conditions are poor (such as
ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
p laning) -risk of accident .
- Turn off the cruise control temporarily
when entering turn lanes, highway exit
lanes or in constr uction zones .
- Please note that inadve rtently "resting"
your foot on the accelerator pedal causes the cruise control not to brake. This is
because the cruise control is overridden
by the driver's acceleration.
- If a brake system malfunction such as
overheating occurs when the cruise con­
trol system is switched on, the braking
function in the system may be sw itched
off. The other cruise control functions re­
main active as long as the indicator light
lij;(l)~i4 (US models) ;ill (Canadian mod­
els) is on.

-Veh icles with manual transmiss ion: You
can attain the set speed only if the gear
th at is cur rently engaged will allow it, or
if it does not tax the engine and allows it
to run smoothly. Therefore shift into a
higher or lower gear in a timely manner.
- Th e brake lights illuminate as soon as
the brakes apply automatically.

Neutral and the clutch pedal depressed.

Always depress the clutch peda l fully when
changing gears. Do not ho ld the vehicle on
a hill with the clutch pedal partially de­
pressed. This may cause premature clutch
wear or damage .

-Resting your hand on the gearsh ift lever
knob while driving will cause premature

- The back-up lights go on when you sh ift

Starting off
• Press and hold the brake pedal.
• Press and hold the release button in these­
lector lever hand le and move the selector
lever from P or N to D/S and release the but­
ton ~_& .
• Wait briefly until the transmission has shift­
ed (you wi ll feel a slight movement).
• Remove your foot from the brake pedal and
accelerate .
