Starting the vehicle with the emergency
key
Applies to vehicles: with ignition lock
You can use the emergency key as an ignition
key in an emergency.

Ste ering lock
The steering locks when yo u remove the ig ni­
tion key . The lo cked steering helps prevent ve ­
hicle theft .
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unus ual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the veh icle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period .
A WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a comp lete stop. The
full funct ion of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed . You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually wo uld, this could
lead to crashes and ser ious injuries.
- For safety reasons , you should always
pa rk your vehicle w ith the selector lever
in P . Otherwise, the vehicle could inad ­
verten tly roll away .
- The radiator fan can continue to run fo r
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the ignition key. The radiator fan can a lso
turn on again if the engine coo lant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
build-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equipment such as the power windows
could be operated . This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preven ting people from es­
caping from the veh icle on their own in
the event of an emergency. Depending
on the time of year, peop le inside the ve­
hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures .

If the engine has been under heavy load
for an extended period, heat builds up in
the engine compartment after the engine
is switched off -there is a risk of damaging
the engine . Allow the engine to run at idle
for about two minutes before switching it
off.

Switching the ignition on/off
If you would like to switch the ignition on
without starting the engine, follow these
steps :
.. Press the
!START ENGIN E STOP! button
without pressing the clutch pedal (for man ­
ual transmissions) or the brake pedal (for
automatic transmiss ions) .
.. To switch the ignition off, press the but ton
again. If
the engine should not start immediately,
the sta rting process is automatically stopped
afte r a short t ime. Repeat start ing procedure.
When sta rting the engine, major elect rical
loads are switched off temporar ily .
After a cold engine is started, there may be a
brief period of increased noise because oil
pressure must first build up in the hydrau lic
valve adjusters . This is norma l and not a cause
for concern .

- Never turn off the engine until the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your veh icle . Otherw ise, the

Emergency off

tions. To do so , step on the brake peda l and

ton vehicle speed must be less than 6 mph (10 km/h).

the system does not recognize it . Fo r exam­
ple , the master key cannot be recogni zed if it
is covered by an obje ct (e.g . al uminum brief
case) which
screens t he radio s ignal. Elec tron­
ic dev ices such as cell phones can also inter­
fere with the radio s ignal.
Pre ss brak e pedal to start engine
This message appears if you do not press the
brake pedal to start the eng ine in a vehicle
with an automat ic transm iss ion.
Press clutch pedal to start engine
T his message appears if you do not press the
clutch pedal to start the engine in a veh icle
with a manual tr ansmission . ..,.

This message appears when attempting to
start the engine if the selector lever for the
automatic t ransmission is not in the P or N
position. The engine can on ly be started with
the selector in these posi tions.
Is the ke y in the vehicl e?
This message appears if the master key is re­
moved from the vehicle with the eng ine run­
n ing .
If the master key is no longer in the ve ­
hi cle, yo u cannot swit ch o n the ignition after
stopping the engine and you also cannot star t
the engine again. Moreover, yo u cannot lock
the vehicle from the outside with the key .
Shift to P otherwise vehicle ca n roll away .

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome ­
chanical parking brake . The parking b rake is
designed to p revent the veh icle from rolling
u nintentionally and replaces the hand b rake .
I n add ition to the normal functions of a tradi ­
tional hand brake, the electromechanical
parking brake provides vario us convenience
and safe ty f unct io ns.

The starting assist function ensures that the
parking broke is released automatically upon starting.

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
Applies to vehicles: with tiptro nic
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you
against accidentally shifting into a forward or
the reverse gear and causing the vehicle to
move unintentionally .

Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po ­
sitions when the ignition is turned on. You
must press the brake pedal and the interlock
button to select another position . As a re­
minder to the driver, the following warning
appears in the instrument cluster display
when the se lector is in P and N :
When stationary apply brake pedal while se­
lecting gear
A time delay element prevents the selector
lever from locking when it is moved through
the N position (going from R to D/5) . The lock- Transmission 85
ing element will lock the selector lever if the
lever is left in N (Neutral) for more than ap­
proximately 1 second, without the brake ped­
al being pressed .
At speeds above about 3 mph (5 km/h) the
Automatic Shift Lock is automatically deacti­
vated in the N position.
Interlock button
The lock button on the selector lever prevents
the lever from being accidentally sh ifted into
certain positions. Pressing this button deacti­
vates the selector lever lock . Depending on
the direction of the shift, the selector lever
locks at different positions . The positions are
highlighted in the illustration

Ignition key safety interlock
The key cannot be removed from the ignition
unless the selector lever is in the P park posi­
tion. When the ignition key is removed, the
selector lever will be locked in the P position.
Kick-down
App lies to vehicles: with tipt ron ic
The kick-down feature allows the vehicle to
generate maximum acceleration .
When you press the accelerator pedal beyond
the resistance point that is reached at full
throttle, the transmission will select a lower
gear ratio based on vehicle speed and engine
RPM . The engine RPM will be controlled to
produce max imum veh icle acceleration as
long as you continue to press the accelerator
pedal beyond this resistance point .
,8. WARNING
Please note that the drive wheels can spin
if kick-down is used on a smooth slippery
road - there is a risk of skidding.

The selector lever can only be moved from the

S tronic ®
Introduction
Applies to vehicles: with S tronic transm ission
Your vehicle is equipped with an electronical­
ly-controlled manual transmission called S
tronic ®. Two independent clutches transfer
the power between the engine and transmis­
sion . They rep lace the torque converter used
in conventional automatic transmissions and
allow the vehicle to accelerate without a no­
ticeable interruption in traction.
You can also shift the gears
manually using
tiptronic , if you like ¢ page 92.
Selector lever positions

The instrument cluster display shows the cur­

P -Park
The wheels are mechanically locked in this po­
sition. You can only shift into Park when the
vehicle is

To shift in and out of P, press the interlock
button in the selector lever
while press ing the
brake pedal.
R - Reverse
Only shift into reverse gear when the vehicle is
stationary and the engine is running at idle
speed ¢

To select R, press the interlock button while
pressing the brake pedal. The back-up lights
switch on in the R position if the ignition is
switched on .

When st a tiona ry apply brake ped al while se­
lecti ng gear
The se lector lever lo ck only funct ions when
the vehicle is stationary and at speeds up to
3 mph (5 km/h). At higher speeds, the lock is
automatically deactivated i n the N position .
The se lector lever is not loc ked when s hifting
q ui ckly thro ugh N, for examp le from R to D/5.
This makes it possible to free the veh icle when
it is stuck by " rocking" it . The selector lever
l ock engages if the lever stays in N longer
than 1 second when the brake pedal is not pressed.
Inte rlock button
The interlock button in the selector lever han ­
d le prevents you from moving the selector
l ever inadvertently while in some selector lev­
er positions. Press ing the interlock button re­
leases the se lector lever lock. The pos itions
that require the interlock button to be press ­
ed are marked in color in the i llustration
~ fig.91.
Ignition key safety inte rlock
You can only remove the key after switching
the ign it ion off if the selec tor lever is in the P
position . T he selector lever w ill be locked in
the P pos ition as long as the key is not in the
ignit io n.

There is a syste m ma lf un ction in t he tr ansmis­
sion. The transm ission is switching to emer­
gency mode. Th is mode only sh ifts into cer­
tain gears or will no longer shift at all. The en­
gine may stall. Drive to your authorized Audi
dealer o r qualified repair facility immediately
to have the malfunction co rrected .

You can conti nue d riving
There is a system ma lf u nction in the transmis­
sion. The transmission is sw itching to emer­
gency mode. Th is mode only shifts into cer­
tain gears or will no longer shift at a ll. The en­
g ine may stall. You cannot engage the reve rse
gear . D rive to your authorized A udi dealer or
qua lified r epai r faci lity immediate ly to have
the ma lf u nction co rrec ted .

and shift to park .
Do not continue driving. Select the P se lector
lever pos ition and see your authorized Audi
dealer o r qualified repair facility for assis ­
tance.

ments, tap the switch again to the left or
right. The distance between the two veh icles
will change in the instrument cluster dis­
play.
When approaching a moving vehicle up ahead,
the adaptive cru ise cont rol system brakes to
matc h that object's speed and then maintains
the stored distance. If the vehicle ahead ac­
celerates, adaptive cruise control will a lso ac ­
celerate up to the stored speed.
The higher the speed, the greater the distance
in yards (meters)¢ ,&.. T he
Distance 3 setting
is recommended .
The distances p rov ided are spec ified values.
Depending on the driving situation and the
how the vehicle ahead is dr iving, the actual
distance may be more or less than these tar­
get distances .

sponds to a distance of 92 feet/28 meters
when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a

when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a
time interval of 1.3 seconds .

when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a

A WARNING
Following other veh icles too closely in­
creases the risk of collis ions and ser ious

- Sett ing short distances to the traffic
ahead reduces the time and d istance
availab le to bring your vehicle to a safe
stop and makes it even more necessary
to pay close attention to traffic.

-Always obey applicab le traffic laws, use
good judgment, and se lect a safe follow­
ing distance for the traffic, road and
weather conditions .

-Distance 3 is set automatically each time
you switch the ignition on.
- Your standard sett ings are automatically
stored and ass igned to the remote con­
trol key being used.
