On vehicles with Audi drive select*, you can
adjust the sporty shift characteristics in
the
Dynamic driving mode. 5 will appear in
the instrument cluster display instead of
D.
Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
Applies to vehicles: with tiptro nic
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you
against accidentally shifting into a forward or
the reverse gear and causing the vehicle to
move unintentionally .

The selector lever lock is released as follows :

press and hold the interlock button on the

tor lever to the desired position .
Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po ­
sitions when the ignition is turned on. You
must press the brake pedal and the interlock
button to select another position . As a re­
minder to the driver, the following warning
appears in the instrument cluster display
when the se lector is in P and N :
When stationary apply brake pedal while se­
lecting gear
A time delay element prevents the selector
lever from locking when it is moved through
the N position (going from R to D/5) . The lock- Transmission 85
ing element will lock the selector lever if the
lever is left in N (Neutral) for more than ap­
proximately 1 second, without the brake ped­
al being pressed .
At speeds above about 3 mph (5 km/h) the
Automatic Shift Lock is automatically deacti­
vated in the N position.
Interlock button
The lock button on the selector lever prevents
the lever from being accidentally sh ifted into
certain positions. Pressing this button deacti­
vates the selector lever lock . Depending on
the direction of the shift, the selector lever
locks at different positions . The positions are
highlighted in the illustration

Ignition key safety interlock
The key cannot be removed from the ignition
unless the selector lever is in the P park posi­
tion. When the ignition key is removed, the
selector lever will be locked in the P position.
Kick-down

The kick-down feature allows the vehicle to
generate maximum acceleration .
When you press the accelerator pedal beyond
the resistance point that is reached at full
throttle, the transmission will select a lower
gear ratio based on vehicle speed and engine
RPM . The engine RPM will be controlled to
produce max imum veh icle acceleration as
long as you continue to press the accelerator
pedal beyond this resistance point .

Please note that the drive wheels can spin
if kick-down is used on a smooth slippery
road - there is a risk of skidding.

The emergency release is located under the in­
sert for the ashtray.
.. Slide open the cover for the ashtray.
.. Release the ashtray by push ing the switch
@¢fig. 88 to the right.
.. Remove the ashtray insert@.
.. Now you can see a small cover in the ash­
tray holder on the front of the ashtray re­
cess.
.. Re lease and remove this cover .
.. You now have access to a bolt. Using a
screwdriver or similar, press the bolt down
and hold it down ¢

.. Now press the interlock and move the selec-
tor lever to the N pos ition .
The selector lever can only be moved from the
P position if the ignition key is in the lock and
the ignition is turned on. If the vehicle has to
be pushed or towed if the power supply fa ils
(e.g. battery is discharged), the selector lever
must first be moved to the N position using
the emergency locking device.
S tronic ®
Introduction
Applies to vehicles: with S tronic transm ission
Your vehicle is equipped with an electronical­
ly-controlled manual transmission called S
tronic ®. Two independent clutches transfer
the power between the engine and transmis­
sion . They rep lace the torque converter used
in conventional automatic transmissions and
allow the vehicle to accelerate without a no­
ticeable interruption in traction.
You can also shift the gears
manually using
tiptronic , if you like ¢ page 92.
Selector lever positions

The instrument cluster display shows the cur­
rent se lector lever position and current gear .
P -Park
The wheels are mechanically locked in this po­
sition. You can only shift into Park when the
vehicle is
stationary ¢ /1. .
To shift in and out of P, press the interlock
button in the selector lever
while press ing the
brake pedal.
R - Reverse
Only shift into reverse gear when the vehicle is
stationary and the engine is running at idle
speed ¢
/1..
To select R, press the interlock button while
pressing the brake pedal. The back-up lights
switch on in the R position if the ignition is
switched on .

N -Neutral
The transmission is in idle in this position.
DIS -Normal position for driving forward
In the 0/5 position , the transmission can be
operated either in the normal D mode or in
the 5 sport mode. To select the S sport mode ,
pull the se lector lever back briefly. Pulling the
lever back again will select the normal D
mode. The instrument cluster disp lay shows
the selected driving mode.
I n the
normal mode D, the transmission auto­
matica lly selects the best gear ratio . It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and the
dynamic control program (DRP).
Select the
sport mode S for sporty driv ing.
The vehicle makes full use of the engine's
power. Shifting is more noticeable when accel­
erating.
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below 3 mph (5 km/h), you must always apply
the foot brake before and while moving the l ever to D/S out of N.
I n certain circumstances it may be advanta­
geous to temporarily switch to the manual
shift program to manually select gear ratios
to match specific driving conditions
~ page 92.
A WARNING
-Never select R or P while driving.
- Power is stil l transmitted to the wheels
when the eng ine is running at idle. To
prevent the vehicle from "creeping", you
must keep your foot on the brake in all
selector lever positions (except P) when
the engine is running. Do not inadver­
tent ly press the accelerator pedal when
the vehicle is stopped if a gear is engag­
ed . Otherwise the vehicle will start to
move immediately. This could happen
even if the parking brake is activated.
- Before opening the hood and working on
a running engine, select P with the se lec­
tor lever and activate the parking brake.

- On vehicles with Audi drive select*, you
can adjust the sporty shift characteristics
in the
Dynamic driving mode.Swill ap­

- If you accidentally select N while driving,
take your foot off the accelerator pedal
immediately and wait for the engine to
slow down to idle before selecting D/S.
- If there is a power failure, the selector
lever will not move out of the P position .

The selector lever lock prevents you from se ­
lecting a gear accidentally , causing the vehi­
cle to roll .

The se lector lever lo ck only funct ions when
the vehicle is stationary and at speeds up to
3 mph (5 km/h). At higher speeds, the lock is
automatically deactivated i n the N position .
The se lector lever is not loc ked when s hifting
q ui ckly thro ugh N, for examp le from R to D/5.
This makes it possible to free the veh icle when
it is stuck by " rocking" it . The selector lever
l ock engages if the lever stays in N longer
than 1 second when the brake pedal is not pressed.
Inte rlock button
The interlock button in the selector lever han ­
d le prevents you from moving the selector
l ever inadvertently while in some selector lev­
er positions. Press ing the interlock button re­
leases the se lector lever lock. The pos itions
that require the interlock button to be press ­
ed are marked in color in the i llustration
~ fig.91.
Ignition key safety inte rlock
You can only remove the key after switching
the ign it ion off if the selec tor lever is in the P
position . T he selector lever w ill be locked in
the P pos ition as long as the key is not in the
ignit io n.
Driving information

A WARNING
Imprope r use of the adaptive cruise con­
trol can cause collis ions, other acc idents
and serious personal injuries.
- Pressing the
ISE TI button whe n driving at
speeds below 20 mph (30 km/h), will au­
tomat ica lly accelerate the veh icle to
20 mph (30 km/h), which is the m ini­
mum speed that can be set.
@ Tips
- If you switch the ignition or the adapt ive
cruise control off, the set speed is erased
from the system memory.
- The elect ronic stabilization control (ESC)
and the a nti-slip-regulation (ASR) are au­
tomatically tu rned on when the adaptive
cruise control is turned on. Both systems
cannot be turned off if the adaptive
cruise control is turned on.

~ To increase or reduce the distance by incre­
ments, tap the switch again to the left or
right. The distance between the two veh icles
will change in the instrument cluster dis­
play.
When approaching a moving vehicle up ahead,
the adaptive cru ise cont rol system brakes to
matc h that object's speed and then maintains
the stored distance. If the vehicle ahead ac­
celerates, adaptive cruise control will a lso ac ­
celerate up to the stored speed.
The higher the speed, the greater the distance
in yards (meters)¢ ,&.. T he
Distance 3 setting
is recommended .

Depending on the driving situation and the
how the vehicle ahead is dr iving, the actual
distance may be more or less than these tar­
get distances .

A WARNING
Following other veh icles too closely in­
creases the risk of collis ions and ser ious

availab le to bring your vehicle to a safe
stop and makes it even more necessary
to pay close attention to traffic.

- If a co llision is imminent, the system will
first provide an
acute warning by bri efly and
sharp ly app ly ing the brakes .
- If you do not react to the ac ute warning ,
braking guard can brake within the limits of
the system. This reduces the veh icle speed
in the event of a collis ion.
- At speeds under 20 mph (30 km/h), the sys ­
tem can in it iate a complete deceleration
s hortly before a collision .

- If the Audi braking guard senses that you
are not braking hard enough when a colli­
sion is imminent, it can increase the braking
force .
Which functions can be contr oll ed ?
You can sw itch Audi braking g uard and the
distance/approach warning on or off in the ra­
d io or MMI Qpage 102, Set tings in the ra­
dio/MM!.
A WARNING
Lack of attention can cause col lisions, oth­
er accidents and serious persona l injuries.
The Audi b raking guard is an assist system
and cannot prevent a collis ion by itself.
The driver must always intervene. The dr iv­
er is always responsible for braking at the
correct time.
- Always pay close attention to traffic,
even when the Audi braking guard is
switched on. Be ready to intervene and
be ready to take comp lete control when­
ever necessary. Always keep the safe and
legal distance between your vehicle and
vehicles up ahead .
- Audi braking guard works within limits
and w ill not respond outs ide the system
limits, for examp le when approaching a
stopped vehicle or stationary obstacle
(end of a traff ic jam or veh icle that has
broken down in traffic).
- Always remember that the radar s ensor
for the A udi braking guard works only
within defined detect ion and range limits
l ) Th is is not available in some c oun tries .
that may prevent the proper detection of
other veh icles.
- The radar sensor's function and range
can be reduced by rain, snow and heavy
spray. Moving veh icles up ahead may not
be prompt ly detected or may not be de­
tected at all .
- Reflective surfaces including crash barri­
ers or tunne l entrances may impair the
function of the radar sensor .

- You can cancel the braking that is in it iat­
ed by the system by braking yourse lf, by
accelerating not iceably or by swerving .
- Audi braking guard error messages

- Keep in mind that brak ing guard can
brake unexpectedly. Always secure any
cargo or objects that you are transport­
ing to reduce the risk of damage or in­
jury .

Park assist
Parking system
Applies to vehicles: with pa rking system
Different park assist systems may be used for
parking or maneuvering, depending on the
vehicle's features.
Parking system (rear)*:
For the parking system (rear), the acoustic
park assist system is installed in the rear of
the vehicle
¢ page 112.
The rear parking assist system uses ultrason ic
sensors to determine the distance of the vehi­
cle from a detected obstacle. There are a total
of four sensors located on the rear bumper
(two in the middle and two on the sides).
Parking system (rear, with rear view
camera)*:
For the parking system (rear, with rear view
camera),
the rear acoustic park assist system
is integrated in the rear of the vehicle and the
rear view camera is integrated in the rear lid
¢page 115.
The parking system (rear, with rear view cam­
era)
uses ultrasonic sensors to determine the
distance of the vehicle from a detected obsta­
cle . There are a total of four sensors located
on the rear bumper (two in the middle and
two on the sides).
Parking system (rear)
Rear acoustic park assist

The rear acoustic park assist warns you of ob­
stacles or objects behind your car.
Description
The rear acoustic parking ass ist system deter­
mines the distance of the vehicle from an ob­
stacle using ultrasonic sensors. There are 4
sensors in the rear bumper.
The range at which the senso rs start to meas­
ure is
about :
To the side 2 ft (0.60 m)
Center rear 5.2 ft (1.60 m)
Activation
Acoustic parking assist is activated automati­
ca lly when
reverse gear is engaged. A brief
tone confirms that the system is activated.
Warning tones
Distance warning is given by warn ing tones
which are generated by the rear signal genera­
tor. The volume and the pitch of the warning
tones can be adjusted in the MMI*
¢page 113.
Reversing
Distance warning when reversing starts when
an obstacle is detected in the range of the
parking assist system . As the distance de­
creases, the time interval between the audible
tones becomes shorter.
When the distance is less than 1ft (0.30 m),
the tone becomes continuous. At this point
you should stop backing up .
Please note that low objects already signalled
by a warning can disappear from the system's
detection range and will not continue to be
signalled .
If the distance to an obstacle remains the
same, the volume of the distance warning is
gradua lly reduced after about 4 seconds (this
does not apply in the continous tone range).
Approaching another obstacle will resu lt in
the distance warning sounding at the normal
volume again.
Malfunctions in the system
If a warning tone is audible for about five sec­
onds when you turn on the ignition , there is a
malfunction in the system. Have the problem
corrected by your authorized Audi dealer.
Keep the sensors in the rear bumper clean and
free from ice so that the acoustic park assist
system can function properly.

The accuracy of the orientation lines and blue
surfaces diminis hes if:
- the rear view camera does not prov ide a re li­
able image, for examp le, in poor vis ibility
conditions or if the lens is dirty,
- the image on the screen is not visible due to
sun g lare and reflection .
Caring for th e rear view came ra lens
The rear view camera is located above the rear
license plate b racket . Fo r the pa rking assist to
ope rate, the lens
,=:,fig. 118 must be kept
clean:
- Dampen the lens with a househo ld alcohol­
based glass cleane r, and clean the lens with
a dry cloth

- Remove s now with a hand brush and ice
prefe rably with a de-icing spray

A WARNING
- T he pa rking aid cannot repla ce the dr iv­
er's attention. The driver a lone is respon­
sible for parking and similar driving ma­
neuvers .
- Always keep your eyes on the vehicle's
su rroundings, using the rear view mirror
as well.
- Do not a llow yourse lf to be d istracted
from traffic by the rear view camera pic­
tures.
- If the position and the installation ang le
of the camera has changed, fo r example,
after a rear end collision, do not continue
to use the system for safety reasons. Have it checked by a qua lified dealership.

- Low obstacles already signaled by a
warning can disappear from the system's
detection range as they are approached
and will not continue to be signaled . Ob­
jects such as barrier cha ins, trailer draw
bars, thin pa inted ve rtical po les o r fe n­
ces may not be detected by t he system,
pos ing risk of damage.
- Never use warm or hot water to remove
s n ow or ice from the rear view camera

Switching on/off
Applies to vehicles: with parking system (rear, with rear
view camera)
The rear view camera switches on automati­
cally together with the acoustic park assist
when you put the vehicle in reverse.
Switching on
"' Put the veh icle in reverse gear, the acoust ic
parking system with rear view camera is ac ­
tivated automat ica lly. Act ivat ion of the
acoust ic par king system is confirmed by a
brief ac knowledgement sou nd.
Switching off
"' Drive faster than 9 mph (15 km/h) , or
"' take the vehicle out of reverse gear . The
acoust ic park ing system is immediate ly de­
activated, and the rea r view came ra p icture
is deact ivated a utomat ically afte r a pe riod
o f abo ut 1 5 seconds , or
"' switch off the ignition.
T he de lay in deact ivat ing the came ra prov ides
an unin terrup ted view beh ind the ve hicle es­
pe cially when mane uver ing in tig ht park ing
spaces and prevents the picture from t urning
off the every time you shift out of reverse .
If the wa rning mess age ap pears in the dis play
but not the rea r view came ra p icture, read and
confirm the warni ng message. The acoustic
distance signal is always active .
If you press a fu nction button on the M MI
control console, the rea r view came ra p icture
disappears . The rear view camera picture reap­
pears the next time yo u pa rk.

In the MMI display, the d irection of t ravel
of the vehicle rea r is represented depend­
ing on the steering wheel angle. The vehi­
cle front sw ings out more than the ve hicle
rear. Maintain plenty of distance from an
obstacle so that your o utside mirror or a
corne r of your veh icle does not co llide with
any obs ta cl es -danger of ac cident!

The left or right orientation li nes and sur­
faces wi ll be displayed, depending on the

The new ly adjusted value is briefly heard from
the signal gene rator. The sett ings a re auto­

freq uency of the warning tones is adjus t-

ed so that you can easily hear the acous­
tic d istance signa l even if the radio is
playing, the air-cond it ioner blower is on
