There is a malfunction in the clutch. The engine
torque that can be transferred is reduced. Yo u
may continue driving. Avoid using the clutch in
the future in any way that will p lace a heavy load
on it. For examp le, do not let the clutch rub when
starting on hills, when tow ing a trailer or when
maneuvering the vehicle . The indicato r light
tur ns off once the clutc h is fully operable again.

!;.J [/; Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC)
If the bJ indicator light blinks while driving , the
E SC o r ASR (A nti-Sl ip Regulation) is act ively regu­
l ating .
If the
bJ ind icator light turns on, the system has
switched the ESC off. In t his case, you can switch
t h e ign it io n off and then on to swi tch the ESC on
again. The indicator light t urns off when the sys­
tem is functioning fu lly.
If
the . indicator light turns on, ESC was
swi tched off using the

Stabi liz ation contro l (ESC /ABS ): malfunction !

If the G1 ind icator light and the ~ (USA mod­
els),11J (Canada models) ABS indicator light turn
o n and the message appears, there is a malfunc­
tion in the ABS o r the e lectronic diffe rentia l lock .
This also causes the ESC to malfunction. The
br akes st ill func tion wi th the ir normal power, bu t
ABS is not active .

tems.

Driving
release automatically until the wheels build up
enough driving force .
Starting on hills with hill hold assist
Hill hold ass ist makes it eas ier to start on hills.
Requirement: the driver 's door must be closed
and the eng ine must be running .
.,. To activate hill hold assist, press and hold the
brake pedal for several seconds. The vehicle
must be in an uph ill direction of travel.
After releasing the brake pedal, the braking pow­
er is maintained for a brief moment
c;, .&. to pre ­
vent the vehicle from rolling back when starting. During this time, you can eas ily begin to move
your veh icle .
.&_ WARNING
-If you do not begin driving immediately or
the engine stalls after releas ing the b rake
pedal, your vehicle may begin to roll back­
ward. Press the brake pedal or set the park ­
ing brake immediate ly.
- The intelligent technology of hill hold assist
cannot overcome the limitations imposed by
natural physical laws. The increased comfort
offered by hill hold assist should not cause
you to take safety risks.
-Hill hold assist cannot hold the vehicle in
place on all h ills (for example, if the ground
is slippery or icy).
-To reduce the risk of an accident, always make sure the vehicle is situated safely
wh ile stat ionary.
Automatic transmission
Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with automatic transmissions
.
The aut omat ic transmission is controlled elec­
tronica lly. The transmission shifts up or down au­
tomatically depending on which drive prog ram is
selected.
When a
moderate driving style is used, the
transmission se lects the most economical driving
mode. The transmission upshifts at a lower RPM

and downshifts at a higher RPM to improve fue l
effic iency.
The transmission switches to a sporty mode after
a kick-down or when the driver uses a
sporty
driving style
characterized by quick accelerator
pedal movements, heavy acceleration, frequent
changes in speed and traveling at the maximum
speed .
If desired, the driver can also select the gears
manually (tiptronic mode) c:;, page 99.
S tronic transmission
The S tron ic is a dual-clutch transmission. Power
i s transferred using two clutches that work inde­
pendently from one another. They replace the
torque converter used in conventional automatic
transmissions and allow the vehicle to accelerate
without a noticeable interruption in traction .
tiptronic transmission
In the tiptronic transmission, power is transfer­
red by a torque converter.
Selecting a selector lever position

Intelligent Technology Electronic stabilization
control (ESC)
Description
Ele ctronic stabilization control (ESC) supports
driver safety . It reduces the risk of slipping and
improves d riving stability. ESC detects critica l sit ­
uations such as when the vehicle is oversteering
and understeering or the wheels are spinn ing.
T he vehicle is stabilized by applying the brakes or
reducing eng ine torq ue. When the ESC engages,
the
J;,j ind icator light blinks in the instrument
cluste r.
T he follow ing systems are integrated in the ESC:
Ant i-loc k bra king s ystem (ABS)
ABS prevents the whee ls from locking when brak­
ing. The vehicle can still be steered even during
hard brak ing. Apply steady pressure to the brake
pedal. Do not pump the pedal. A pulsing in the
b rake pedal indicates that the system is act ing to
stabilize the vehicle .
Br ake a ssist s ystem
The brake assist system can decrease braking dis­
tance. It increases brak ing power when the driver
presses the brake pedal quickly in emergency sit­
uations . You must press and hold the brake pedal
unti l the dangerous sit uat io n is ove r. In veh icles
with adaptive cr uise contro l*, the bra ke assist
system is more sensitive if t he d istance detec ted
to the veh icle dr iv ing ahead is too small.
Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR )
ASR red uces eng ine power when the drive wheels
begin spinning and adapts the force to the road
conditions . This makes it easie r to sta rt, acceler­
ate and dr ive up hill s.
Electronic differenti al lock (EDL )
EDL applies the brakes to a wheel that starts
spi nning and t ransfers t he drive powe r to the
;;§ other driving wheels. This f unct ion is not availa-....
~ b lea t higher speeds.

3 Intellig ent Technology
In extreme cases , ED L automat ica lly switches off
to keep the brake o n the braked wheel from over­
heating. The veh icle is still working correct ly. ED L
will switch on again automatically when condi­
tions have returned to normal.
Ste ering recommendation
The ESC he lps to stabilize the vehicle by changing
the steering torque.
In veh icles wi th dynamic steer ing*, ESC also
helps to stab ilize the steer ing in crit ica l sit ua ­
tions.
Selective wheel torque control
Se lective w heel to rque con trol is used w hen d riv­
i ng on curves. Bra king is targeted towa rd t he
whee ls on the inside of the cu rve as needed. This
allows mo re precise driving in curves .
Automatic post -collision braking system
The "automat ic post-collision braking system "
can help to reduce the risk of sliding and of addi­
tiona l co llisions after an acciden t. If the a irbag
contro l
module detects a co llision, the veh icle is
braked by the ESC.
T he veh icle does not bra ke automatically if:
- the dr iver presses the acce lerator pedal, or
- the ESC, the brake system or the veh icle elect ri-
cal system are not functioning.
A WARNING
=
- The ESC and its integrated systems cannot
overcome the lim its imposed by natural
phys ica l laws. This is especially important
on slippery or wet roads. If the systems be­
gin acting to s tabilize yo ur vehicle, you
should immediately alter your speed to
match the road and traffic conditions. Do
not let the inc reased safety provided tempt
you into taking risks. This could increase
your r isk of a coll is ion.
- Please note the ris k of a collis ion increases
when dr iv ing fast, especially through curves
and on slippery or wet roads, and when dr iv-
ing too close to objects ahead . The ESC and

Emergency assistance
General information
.,. Park the vehicle as far as possible from moving
traffic in the event of a breakdown. In the event
of a flat tire, park the vehicle on a level surface .
It you are on a steep hill, be especially careful.
.,. Set the parking brake .
.,. Switch the emergency flashers on .
.,. Have the passengers exit the vehicle . They
should move to a safe place, for example be­
hind a guard rail.
_& WARNING
Follow the steps given above . This is for your
protection and the for the safety of other driv ­
ers.

The vehicle tool kit, vehicle jack, tire mobility kit
and compressor are stored in the luggage com­
pa rtm ent under the cargo floor cover.
Applies to: Coupe/Cab riolet
.,. Lift the cargo floor using the plastic handle and
hook the handle onto the luggage compart­
ment seal or above the power top storage com­
partment.

.,. Fold the cargo floor cover up or remove it com­
pletely .
Applies to: vehicles with spare tire
.,. Remove the handle by turning it counter-clock­
w ise and remove the spare tire.
App lies to: Coupe/Cabr io let
.,. Unhook the cargo floor before closing the lug -
gage compartment lid.
Depending on vehicle equipment, the vehicle tool
kit, tire mobility kit and compressor may be lo­
cated under another cover that is secured with a handwheel.
Applies to: Cabriolet
The vehicle jack is located unde r the foam piece.
To remove the foam piece, you must remove the
wind deflector*, the compressor securing strap*
and the hand wheel.
_& WARNING
Improper use of the veh icle jack can cause se­
rious personal injuries.
- Never use the screw driver hex head to
tighten wheel bolts, since the bolts cannot attain the necessary tightening torque if you
use the hex head, potentially causing an ac­
cident.
- The factory-suppl ied jack is intended only
for your veh icle model. Under no circum­
stances should it be used to lift heavy
veh icles or othe r loads; you risk injuring
yourse lf.
- Never start the engine when the ve hicle is
raised, which could cause an accident.
- Support the vehicle securely with appropri­
ate stands if work is to be performed under­
neath the vehicle; otherwise, there is a po­
tential risk for in jury .
- Never use the jack supplied with your Aud i
on another vehicle, particularly on a heavier
one. The jack is only suitable for use on the
vehicle it came with.

Loosening the wheel bolts

• Slide the wheel wrench (from the vehicle tool
kit) all the way onto the wheel bolt.
• Turn the wheel bolt approximately one turn to
the left -arrow-. To reach the required torque,
hold the end of the wheel wrench. If the wheel
bolt will not loosen, press carefully on the
whee l wrench with your foot. Hold onto the ve­
hicle securely while during this and make sure
your stance is stable .
A WARNING
To reduce the risk of an accident, only loosen
the wheel bolts gently (one turn) before rais­
ing the vehicle with the veh icle jack*.

• Place the veh icle jack* (vehicle tool kit) on a
firm s urface. Use a flat, stable support if neces­
sary. On a slippery surface such as tile, you
should use a non-slip pad (such as a rubber
mat)¢ &.
• Find the marking on the sill that is closest to
the tire that will be changed
¢fig. 292. Behind
the marking, there is a lifting point on the side
sill for the vehicle jack*.
• Turn the handwheel to raise the vehicle jack*
under the lifting point on the side sill until the
bracket on the jack @ completely covers the
notch on your vehicle.
• Align the vehicle jack* so the bracket @covers
the notch and the base ® is flat on the ground.
The base ® must be directly under the lifting
point @.
• Mount the crank on the vehicle jac k*: insert the
crank into the opening on the handwheel. Turn
the crank to the left or right to secure it.
• Continue ra is in g the veh icle jack* with the
crank until the wheel lifts off the ground slight­
ly.
A WARNING
- Ma ke sure the vehicle jack* is stable. Th ere
is a risk of injury when the ground is slick or
soft, because the vehicle jack* could slide or
sink.
- Only raise your vehicle with the vehicle jack*
provided by the factory . If you use a vehicle
jack designed for another vehicle, your vehi­
cle can slide and cause injury.
- Position the vehicle jack* only at the desig­
nated mounting points on the side sill and
align the jack. Otherwise, the vehicle jack*

-The wheel bolts should be clean and easy to
turn. Check for d irt and cor ros ion on the
mating s urfaces of both the wheel and the
h ub. Remove all dirt from t hese surfaces be­
fo re re mount ing th e wheel.
Unidirectional tires
A unid irec tional tire p rofile is ident ified by a rrows
th at poin t in the run nin g dir e cti on o n the tire
sidewall. You mus t always a dhere to the speci ­
fied running d irec tion. This is necessary ens ure
the t ire's optim um perfo rmance in regar d to a d­
hes ion, r unning noise, fr iction and hydrop la ning.
T o be nefi t fu lly fro m the adv ant ages of the uni­
d irect ional tire des ign, you sho uld replace faulty
tires as soon as possi ble an d restore the correct
r u nning di rect io n on all of the tires.
Finishing
.,. Reinstall the caps on the whee l bolts if neces­
sary .
.,. Store the vehicle tool kit in its designated
place .

· Notes on wheel changing
Please read t he informat ion¢ page 348 if yo u
are going to use a replacemen t tire which is d if­
ferent from the tires on yo ur vehicle .
After you change a tire:
- Check the tire pressure on the replacement
tire immediately after installation.
- Have the wheel bolt tightening torque
checked with a torque wrench as soon as pos­
sible by your authorized Audi dealer or quali­
fied workshop.
- With steel and alloy wheel rims, the wheel
bolts are cor rectly tightened at a torque of
90
ft lbs (120 Nm) .
- If you notice that the wheel bolts are corroded
and difficult to turn while changing a tire,
they should be replaced before you check the
tightening torque .
- Replace the flat tire with a new one and have
it installed on your vehicle as soon as possi ­
ble. Remount the wheel cover .
Until then, dr ive with e xtra care and at reduced
speeds.
