Instruments and warning /indicator lights

Malfunctions or faults will be identified either with a red symbol
(pr iority
1-Dange r!) or w ith a ye llow symbo l (prio rity 2 -Warn ing). •
Electronic power control C
This warning/indicator light monitors the electronic
power control.
The warn ing/indicator light (Electro nic Power Control) illumi-
nates when you turn on the ignition as a function check .
(I] Tips
If this warning/indicator light illuminates while you are driving, then
there is a malfunct io n in the engine electron ics . Have the ma lfunct io n
corrected as soon as possib le by your authori zed Audi dealer or qual­
ified repair fac ility. •
Electronic stabilization program (ESP) •..
This warning/indicator light monitors the electronic
stabilization program.
T he warn ing/indicator lig ht has the follow ing funct ions:
• It blinks while you are driving when the ESP is working.
• It illumina tes when you sw itch on the ignition fo r approximately 2
seconds as a function check .
• It illuminates whe n there is a malfunction in the ESP .
• It illuminates when ESP or ASR (Ant i-Slip Regula tion) is deacti­
vated .
• It ill umina tes if t he re is a malfunction in the A BS, s ince the ESP is
part of the ABS system. If the battery terminals were disconnected and re-connected, the
vehicle was jump st arted o r th e bat tery is very weak, t he ESP se nsor
system goes through a learning process for the first few yards. The
warning/indicator light illuminates. The war ning/indicator light goes
out as soo n as the learning process is complete .
If the ESP warning/indicator light ill uminates and stays on after yo u
have sta rted t he engine, t his may mean that the co ntrol system has
temporarily switched off the ESP . If this is case , you can react ivate
t he ESP by tu rning the igni tion off and t hen o n ag ain . The
warning/indica tor light should go out to show that the system is fully
functional again.

Airbag system
~i (USA models) l!.!r (Canada models)
This warning/indica tor ligh t monitors the airbag and the
pretensioner systems.
The G>! (USA models)/ !.!r (Canada mode ls) warn ing light illuminates
fo r a few seconds ea ch time yo u sw itch on the ignitio n.
If the
G>! (USA models)/ !.!r (Canada mode ls) warn ing light does not go
out, or if it illuminates while you are driving, or if it starts to blink,
then there is a malfunction somewhere in the system . If the light
does not illuminate when yo u switch on the ignition, this a lso means
there is a malfunction.
& WARNING
If you have a malfunction in th e airbag syst em, contact your
authorized Audi deale r immediately . Otherwi se the airbag or the
belt pr eten sion er may not work properly in an accid ent .•

Tire pressure monitoring system - telltale
indicator Lamp '
The warning/indicator light appears in the event of a
significant loss of tire pressure or if there is a malfunc­
tion .
The indicator light 'J illuminates to check the func tion when you
switch on the ignition.
If the
I symbol remains on or blinks after you sw itch on the ignit ion,
there is a loss of tire pressure or a system malfunction . If there is a
system malfunction, see your author ized Audi dealer as soon as
possible.

Turn signals ¢ ¢
The indicator light blinks when you use either turn signal.
Whenever you use the left¢ or the right¢ turn signal, the indicator
light blinks. When you use the emergency flashers, both indicator
lights flash .
If one of the turn signa l light bu lbs burn out, the turn signal will blink
twice as fast as normal. •
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) !'.I
The Malfunct ion Indicator Lamp ( MIL) is part of the On-Board Diag­
nostic (OBD II) system . The symbol lights up when the ignition is
t u rned on and will turn off after the engi ne has started and has
sett led at a constant idle speed. This indicates that the MIL is working
properly .

This warning/indicator light reminds you to put on your
safety belt.

(gong) will a lso sound.

General recommendations
Why is your seat adjustment so important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can only provide
maximum protection if the front seats are correctly
adju sted.
Th ere a re various ways of adjusting t he front seats to provide safe and
comfortable support for the driver and the front passenger . Ad just
your seat properly so that :
• you can easily and quickly reach a ll the switc hes and contro ls in the
ins trumen t pa nel
• your body is properly supported thus reducing phys ica l stress and
fatigue
• the safety be lts and airbag system can offer maximum protection
=>
page 197 .
In the following sections, you w ill see exact ly how you can best ad just
your sea ts .
Th ere are special regulations a nd instr uctions for install ing a child
safety seat on the front passenger's sea t. Always follow the informa ­
tion regarding child safety p rovided in=>
page 219, "Child Safety ".
& WARNING
Incorrect seating posit ion of the dri ver and all other passengers
can result in seriou s personal injury.
• Always keep your feet on the floor when the vehicle is in
motion -never put your feet on top of the instrument panel, out
of the window o r on top of the seat cush ion. This applies especially
to the passengers.
If your seating po sition is incorrect, you
increase the ri sk of injury in the case of sudden braking or an acci-

dent . If the airbag inflates and the seating position is incorrect ,
this could result in per sonal injury or even death .
• It is important for both the dri ver and front passenger to keep
a distan ce of at least 10 inche s (25 cm) between themselves and
the steering wheel and /or instrument panel. If you 're sitting any
closer than this , the airbag system cannot protect you properly. In
addition, the front seats and head restraints must be adjusted to
your body height so that they can give you maximum protection .
• Always try to keep as much distance as possible between your­
self and the steering wheel or instrument panel.
• Do not adjust the driver's or front passenger 's seat while the
vehicle is moving. You r seat may move unexpectedly , causing
sudden loss of vehicle control and personal injury . If you adjust
your seat while the vehicle is moving , you are out of position. •
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for saf e and
re lax ed driving.
W e recomme nd that you a djust the drive r's sea t in the
f ollowing man ner :
- Ad just the seat in fore and aft direction so that you can
easily pus h the pedals to the floor w hile keeping your
knees slightly bent=>

- Adjust the seatback so that when yo u sit with yo ur back
agai nst t he seatback , you can st ill grasp t he top of the
steering w heel. ..,

-Position the head restraint according to the occupant's
height=>
page 81. For maximum protection, the top of
the head restraint should be at least at eye level, prefer­
ably higher and ideally level with the top of the head
=>
page 181, fig. 168.
& WARNING
Never place any objects in the driver's footwell. An object could
get into the pedal area and interfere with pedal function. In case
of sudden braking or an accident, you would not be able to brake
or accelerate. •
Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the rearmost
position.
To avoid contact with the airbag while it is deploying, do not
sit any closer to the instrument panel than necessary and
always wear the three-point safety belt provided adjusted
correctly. We recommend that you adjust the passenger's
seat in the following manner:
- Move the front passenger seat into the rearmost position
of the fore and aft adjustment range=>

- Bring the backrest up to an (almost) upright position.
Do
not ride with the seat reclined.
- The ideal position for the head restraint is with the upper
edge of the restraint level with the top of your head
=>
page 81. You should not lower the top of the restraint
below the level of your eyes . -
Place your feet on the floor in front of the passenger's
seat. •
Power seat
Controls
The operating logic for the switches corresponds to the
construction and function of the seat.

and the function of the seat. The seats are adjusted
by moving the
switches following this logic.

& WARNING
• Never adjust the driver's or front passenger's seat while the
vehicle is moving. If you do this while the vehicle is moving, you
will be out of position. Always adjust the driver's or front
passenger's seat when the vehicle is not moving. _,,,

• Never adjust the seatback while the vehicle is moving. If you
adjust your seat while the vehicle is moving, you are out of posi­
tion. Never adjust the seatback when the vehicle is moving.
• To reduce the risk of injury in the case of sudden braking or
accident, front passengers must never ride in a moving vehicle
with the seatback reclined. Safety belts and the airbag system
only offer maximum protection when the seatback is upright and
the safety belts are properly positioned on the body. The more the
seatback is reclined, the greater the risk of personal injury from an
incorrect seating position and improperly positioned safety
belts. •
Lumbar support
The lumbar support can be adjusted to fit the natural
curvature of the occupant's spine.

- Push the forward depression on the switch shell to
increase the curvature.
- Push the
rear depression on the switch shell in order to
decrease the curvature.
Adjusting the height
- Push the top depression on the switch shell to move the
support to a
higher position in the backrest.
- Push the
bottom depression on the switch shell to move
the support to a
lower position in the backrest .
The lumbar support is particular ly effective in supporting the natural
curvature of the spine so that the seating position is more comfort­
able over long distances.

Never adjust the lumbar support while the vehicle is moving. If
you adjust your seat while the vehicle is moving, you are out of
position. Never adjust the seatback when the vehicle is moving. •

Upper thigh support
Lengthening upper thigh support
- Lift the button under the seat cushion.
- Push the seat forward to the desired position .
Shortening upper thigh support
-Lift the button under the seat cushion.
- Push the seat back to the desired position. •

Head restraints
Front head restraints
Head restraints that are adjusted according to body size,
along with the seat belt, offer effective protection.

The head restraints on the front seats can be adjusted to
provide safe support to head and neck at the optimum
height. When optimally adjusted, the top of the restraint
should be level with the top of the head=>
page 181, "Proper
adjustment of head restra ints".

- Grasp the sides of the head restraint with both hands.
- Lift the head restraint.
Lowering the head restraint
- With one hand push down on the middle of the head
restraint .
- With the other hand press the release knob:::;, fig. 69 and
push the head restraint down .

Correctly adjusted head restraints and safety belts are an extremely
effective combination of safety features. •
Rear head restraints
Passengers may only be carried if the head restraints has
been raised to its uppermost position.

Adjusting the head restraints
- To move the hea d restraint up, hold it at the sides and
slide it upwar d unt il it la tches .
- To move the head restra int down , press the button©

Removing the head restraints
- Slide t he head restrai nt all th e way up.
- Press the release butto n© and pu ll the h ead restraint out
and cl ear o f the se at.
Installing the head restraints
-Slide t he posts on the head restraint down into the gu ides
until the posts c lick into p lace. You s hou ld not be ab le to
pull the head restraint out of the backrest.
So that the driver can have a better view to the rear, the head
restra in ts should be pushed down comple tely when t he rea r seats are
not occupied .
& WARNING
• Only remove the rear seat head restraint s when necessary in
order to in stall a child seat . In stall the head restraint again imme­
diately once the chi ld seat is removed. Driving w ithout head
restraint s or with head res traints that are not properly adjusted
increases the risk of serious or fatal neck injury dramatically .
• Read and heed all WARNINGS=>
page 181

Armrest
The armrest can be adjusted to s everal positions and
contains a storage compartment.

- Press the release lever~ fig. 71.
Please note that the driver's arm movements may be restricted with
t he arm rest folded down. For th is reason, t he armrest s ho ul d not be
folded down when driving in city traff ic. •

You can create additional space for loading luggage by
folding do wn either or both of the rear seatback
segments to form a deck .

Returning backrest to upright position
- Push rear seat backrest up unti l it engages~ &. You will
know that the seat is properly engaged when you canno t
se e t he red marking on the lever @.
Locking the backrest
- Insert your key into t he lock ~ fig . 73 and turn it clock­
w ise.
Unlocking the backrest
- Ins ert the key in to the lock and turn it count er-clockwise .
Stowing luggage
-For safe loading and securing of items read an d follow the
guidelines on~
page 183.
The rear seatback is divided into two segments -one third/two thirds.
You can fold down ei ther or bo th parts of t he sea tback.
T he release levers for the fo lding backrests can be loc ked when the
back rests are properly engaged in their upr ight position. This
prevents unauthor ized access to the luggage compartment from
withi n the vehicle. The release levers can only be locked with the
master key o r emergency key.
& WARNING
• The backr est must always be s ecurely latched so that the sa fety
belt of the center seating position can work properly to help
prote ct the occupant .
• The backrest must be securely latched in position so that no
items contained in the luggage compartm ent can s lide forward
upon sudden b raking.
• Never allow safety belts to become damag ed by being caught
in d oor or seat hardware. _,.
