Starting to drive

the engine stalls after releasing the brake

- The inte lligent technology of hill ho ld assist
cannot ove rcome the limitat ions imposed by
natural phys ica l laws. The increased com fort
offered by hill hold assist should not cause
you to take safety risks.
- Hill hold ass ist cannot hold the vehicle in
place on all hills (for examp le, if the ground
is s lippery or icy).
- To reduce the risk o f an accident, always
make sure the vehicle is situated safely
while stationary.
Automatic transmission
Introduction
The au tomatic transmissio n is controlled elec­
t ronically. The transmission shifts up or down au ­
tomat ic al ly depen ding on which dr ive p rogr am is
selected .
When a
moderate driving sty le is used, the
t ransm iss ion selects the mos t econom ica l dr iv ing
mode. The tra nsmission upshi fts at a lowe r RPM
and downs hifts a t a higher RPM to improve fue l
efficiency.

Follow the lega l regulat ions regard ing the light ­
ing eq uipment on your trailer . Conta ct an author ­

Before start ing to drive, check a ll l ight ing equip­
men t on the hitc hed trailer.
The headlig ht range contro l adjusts automatical­
ly to the light range of the headl ights.
Safe ty chain s
Make su re the safety chains are correctly applied
when pulling a trailer . The chains should hang
enough so t hat the trailer can dr ive around
curves. However, they must not touch the
g round .
Air su spension
Applies to: vehicles with air suspension
The air suspension must be at the standard vehi­
cle height before you set the tongue weight on
the trailer a nd h itch the trailer ¢@ ,

Raising/lowering the vehicle .
For ve hicles w ith a factory-installed tra iler hitch,
the air suspension trailer mode will automat ically
sw itch on if you connect the trailer cable to the
socket.
F or ve hicles w ith a retro fitted trailer hitch, you
must switch on the air suspension trailer mode
manually . Select in the Infota inment system:

Driving with a trailer
Driving with a trailer requires extra caution.
Sp eed
Adhere to t he lega l speed lim its . Fo llow the legal
regu lat ions
sp ecific to the country.
As the speed increases, the dr iv ing stab il ity of
t h e tra ile r decreases. Therefore you should not
exceed the max imum lega l speed lim it w hen
t h ere are unfavorab le road, weather and/or wind
conditions. This especia lly applies when driving
downh ill.
Yo u m ust always red uce your speed as soon as
you notice even the slightest swinging motion o f
the trai ler . Never try to "straight en out" the trai l­
er by acce lerating.
The we ight d istr ibution is very poor if the vehicle
is empty and the trai ler is loaded. However if you
must drive under these circumstances, then drive
especially slowly .
Brakes
B rake in a time ly manner. Downs hift befo re dr iv ­
i ng down hill so that the engine can assist with
braking ¢&. .
When using a trailer w it h over run bra kes, fi rst
bra ke gently t hen q uick ly. This red uces the r isk of
j erking while braking if the trailer wheels lock up .

Assistance systems
Speed warning system
Description
Applies to: veh icles with speed warning system
The speed warning system helps you to stay un­
der a specified maximum speed.
The speed warning system warns you if you are
exceeding the maximum speed that you have set.
A warning tone will sound as soon as your speed
exceeds the sto red value slightly.
The . (USA models) I. (Canada models) indi­
cator light and a message appear in the instru­
ment cluster display at the same time.
The.
• indicator light and the message turn off if the
speed falls back below the stored maximum
speed.
Sett ing a threshold is recommended if you would
like to be reminded when you reach a certa in
maximum speed. S ituations where you may want
to do so i nclude driving in a country wit h a ge ne r­
a l speed limit o r if the re is a specified maximum
speed for winter tires.
Setting the warning threshold
The warning threshold is set in the Infotainment
system.

drive at a constant speed starting at 20 mph (30
km/h).

cle and other vehicles.
-For safety reasons, cruise control should not
be used in the city, in stop-and-go traff ic, on
winding roads and when road conditions are poor (such as ice, fog, gravel, heavy rai n and
hyd roplaning), because this inc reases the
r is k of an accident.

The adaptive cruise control system is a combina­
tion of speed and distance regulation.
It assists
the dr iver by bot h regula ting the speed and
maintaining a distance to the vehicle driving
ahead, within the limits of the system .
If the sys­
tem detects and object ahead, adaptive cruise
control can brake and accelerate your vehicle.
This makes driving more comfortable both on
long stretches of hig hway and in stop-and-go
traffic .
What c an adapti ve crui se control do ?
The adaptive cruise contro l system uses video, ra­
dar and ultrasound. Objects driving ahead can be
recognized up to 650 feet (200 m) away.
On open roads with no traffic, it functions like a
cruise control system . The stored speed is main­
tained. When approaching an object ahead, the
adaptive cruise control system automatically brakes to match that object's speed and then
maintains t he stored d istance . As soon as the
system does not detect an object ahead, adaptive
cru ise control acce lerates up to the stored speed .
In stop-and-go traffic, adaptive cru ise control can
brake unt il the vehicle is stat ionary and then be­
g in driving aga in under certain conditions

When you switch ad apt ive cr uise control on, you
can set the current speed as the "control speed"

Audi active lane assist
Description
Applies to: veh icles with Audi active lane assist
Active lane assist detects lane marker lines with ­
in the limits of the system using a camera in the
windshield. If you are approaching a detected lane marker line and it appears likely that you
will leave the lane, the system will warn you with
corrective steering . You can override this steering
at any time . If you pass over a line, the steer ing
wheel will v ibrate lightly. In order for this warn­
ing vibration to occur, it must first be sw itched
on in the Infotainment system. Active lane assist
is ready for operation when the lane marker line
is detected on at least one side of the vehicle.
The system is designed for driving on express­
ways and highways and therefore only activates
at speeds above approximately 40 mph (65 km/
h).
Applies to: vehicles with s ide assist
If you activate a turn signal when active lane as­
sist is ready and it classifies a lane change as crit­
ical because of vehicles traveling alongside you or
approaching you, there will be noticeable correc-

tive steering shortly before you leave the lane.
This will attempt to keep your vehicle in the lane.
Applies to: vehicles w it h out side ass ist
The system will not warn you before crossing a
lane marker line if you have activated the turn
s ignal. In this case, it assumes that you are
changing lanes intentionally.
Applies to: veh icles w it h adaptive cruise contro l
The corrective steering is targeted based on the
driving situation. In addition to the lane marker
lines , the system can also take into account other
objects such as guard rails . If they are detected in
close proximity to the vehicle, active lane assist
helps prevent the vehicle from driving too close
to them. There is also passing ass istance. The
system does not provide any corrective steering if
it detects that you are passing another vehicle.
A WARNING ~ -
-The system warns the driver that the vehicle
is leaving the lane using corrective steering.
The driver is always responsible for keeping
the vehicle within the lane.
- The system can help you keep the vehicle in
the lane, but it does not drive by itself. Al­
ways keep your hands on the steering
wheel.
- Corrective steering may not occur in certain
situations, such as during heavy braking.
- There may be cases where the camera does
not recognize all lane marker lines. Correc­
tive steering can only take place on the side
of the vehicle where lane marker lines are
detected.
- Other road structures or objects could possi­
b ly be identified unintentionally as lane
marker lines. As a result, corrective steering
may be unexpected or may not occur.
- The camera view can be restricted, for ex­
ample by vehicles driving ahead or by ra in,
snow, heavy spray or light shining into the
camera. This can result in active lane assist
not detecting the lane marker lines or de­
tecting them incorrectly .

Audi drive select (drive
settings)
Introduction
Drive select makes it possible to experience dif­
ferent types of vehicle settings in one vehicle .
The driver can se lect
Comfort , Auto and Dynamic
modes in the Inf ota inme nt system to switch be­
tween, for example, a sporty and a comfo rtable
driving mode .
I n the
Individual mode, the sett ings can be ad­
justed to your perso nal preferences. This makes
it poss ible to comb ine settings such as a spo rty
engine setting with light steering.
Description
The following systems, among other things, are
influenced by drive select:
Engine and automatic transmission
Depending on the mode , the engine and a uto­
mat ic tran smission respond more quickly or in a
mo re balanced manner to accelerator peda l

. In the sporty dynamic mode, the
transmission shifts at higher speed ranges.
Adaptive air suspension*
The adaptive a ir suspens ion* is an electron ically­
controlled air suspension and damping system.
The adjustment depends on the driving mode se­
l ected, steering movements, the driver's braking
and acce leration, and as the road surface, vehicle
speed and load.
The vehicle ground clearance depends on the
mode selected and the speed . When you are in
the
auto mode, the highway setting is activated
when you drive above 75 mph (120 km/h) for
more than 30 seconds. The ground clearance is
i ncreased automatically if the speed drops below
44 mph (70 km/h) for more than 120 seconds .
Steering
The power steering adapts. Indirect steering that
moves easily as in comfort mode is especia lly
su ited to long drives on a highway. The dynamic
mode provides sporty, direct steering.

The steering ratio changes based on vehicle
speed in order to maintain optimum steering ef ­
fort for the driver at all times. Th is sets the steer­
i ng to be less sensitive at h igher speeds in order
to provide improved veh icle control. At reduced
speeds, steering is more direct in o rder to keep
t h e steer ing effort as minimal as possible whe n
the driver is maneuvering the vehicle. At low and
average speeds, dynamic steering* additionally
provides more responsive steering performance.
Sport differential*
As a component of the all whee l dr ive system
(quattro)
~ page 123, the sport differe ntial dis­
tributes the driving power to the rear axle de­
pending on the situation. The distribution of
power varies from ba lanced (comfort) to sporty
(dynamic) depending on the se lected mode. The
goal is a high level of agility and ability to accel­
erate on curves. The vehicle is very responsive to
steering.

Safe driving habits
Please remember -safety first!
The individual safety features of your vehicle can
work together as a system to help protect you
and your passengers in a wide range of accidents.
These features cannot work as a system if they
are not always correctly adjusted and correctly
used .
This chapter contains important informat ion,
tips, instructions and warnings that you need to
read and observe for your own safety, the safety
of your passengers and others . We have summar­
iz ed here what you need to know about safety
belts, airbags, child restraints as well as child
safety. Your safety is for us priority number 1. Al­
ways observe the information and warnings in
this section -for your own safety as well as that
of your passengers.
The informa tion in t his section applies to all
model versions of your vehicle. Some of the fea ­
tures described in this sections may be standard
eq uip ment on some models, or may be optional
equ ipment on others. If you are not sure, ask
your author ized Audi dealer.
A WARNING
-Always make sure that you follow the in­
struct ions and heed the WARNINGS in this
Manual. It is in your i nterest and in the in­
terest of your passengers .

Important things to do before driving
Safety is everybody 's job ! Vehicle and occupant
safety always depends on the informed and care­
ful driver .
For your safety and the safety of your passen­
gers,
before driving always:
.. Make sure that a ll lights and signals are operat­

What impairs driving safety?
Safe driving is directly related to the condition of
the vehicle , the driver as well as the driver 's abili­
ty to concentrate on the road without being dis­
tracted.
The driver is responsible for the safety of the ve ­
hicle and a ll of its occupants. If your ability to
drive is impa ired, safety risks for everybody in the
vehicle increase and you a lso become a hazard to
everyone else on the road
