Changing the engine oil
We recommend that have your oil changed by an
authorized Audi dealer or a qualified service sta ­
tion.
Before you check anything in the engine compart­
ment,
alw ay s re ad and heed all WARNINGS c> .&.
in Working in the engine compartment on
page 218 .
The engine oil must be changed according to the
interva ls specified in your Warranty
& Mainte­
n ance booklet . This is ve ry important because the
lub ricat ing propert ies of o il diminish gradually
du ring normal vehi cle use.
Unde r some circumstances the engine o il should
be changed more frequently. Change oil more of­
ten if you d rive mostly short distances, ope rate
the vehicle in dusty areas or unde r predom inantly
s top-a nd-go tr aff ic condit io ns, o r have you r vehi ­
cle whe re temperatures rema in below freezing
for extended periods .
Checking and Fillin g
Detergent additives in the oil will make fresh oil
l ook dark after the engine has been running for a
sho rt time. Th is is norma l and is not a reason to
change the oi l more often than recommended.
Beca use of the p roblem of p roper disposal, along
with t he specia l too ls and necessary expertise re ­
quired, we strongly recommend that yo u have
yo ur o il changed by an authorized
Audi dealer or
a qua lified service station.
If y ou choo se to change your oil yourself , please
note the following important informat ion:

To reduce the risk of personal in jury if you
must change the eng ine oi l in your vehicle
yourself:
- Wear eye protect ion.
-
- To reduce the risk of burns from hot eng ine
oil, let the engine coo l down to the touch.
- W hen removing the o il dra in p lug with your
f ingers, stay as far away as possib le. Always
keep yo ur forearm parallel to the ground to
he lp prevent hot o il from running down your
arm.
- Dra in the oil into a container designed for
this purpose, one la rge enough to hold at
least the tota l amou nt of oil in yo ur engine.
- Engine oil is poisonous . Keep it we ll out of
the reach of ch ild ren .
- Continuous contact wit h used eng ine o il is
harmful to your skin. Always protect your
skin by washing oil off thoro ughly wi th soap
a nd water .
«I) Note
Never mix oil additives with yo ur engine oil.
These additives can damage your engine and
adverse ly affect your Aud i Limited New Vehi­
cle Warranty.
@ For the sake of the environment
- Before changi ng your oil, first make sure
you know where you can prope rly dispose of

The warning triangle p laced in the vehicle at the
factory is located in the luggage compartment .
• To open the cover, turn the locking mechanism
and pull the cover downward .
• Remove the warn ing triangle from its holder .
The luggage compartmen t lid is only designed to
hold the warning triangle offered by the original
accessories program .
Vehicle tool kit
Vehicle tool kit and jack
The vehicle tool kit is located in the luggage
comportment under the cargo floor cover .

• Fold the floor to the seatback with the help of
t he hand le.
• Tu rn the handwheel counter-clockwise
r=;, fig. 201 and remove the spare tire to reach
the vehicle tool kit.
T he onboard tool kit includes :
- Hooks to remove the wheel covers*
- Plastic hook to remove wheel bol t covers"
- Wheel bolt wrench
- Alignment pin for changing wheels
- Screwdriver with reversib le b lade
- Tow ing eye
- Jack
Before storing the jack , make sure it is wound
back down as far as it will go .
A WARNING
'"' -Im proper use of the vehicle jack can cause se­
rious pe rsonal injuries .
- Never use the screw driver hex head to
tighten wheel bolts, since the bolts cannot attain the necessary tightening torque if yo u
use the hex head, po ten tially causing an ac ­
cident.
- The fa ctory-supplied jack is intended only
for your ve hicle model. Unde r no circum­
stances shou ld it be used to lift heavy
vehicles or other loads; you risk injuring
yourse lf.
- Never start the engi ne when the vehicle is
raised, which could cause an accident.
- Support the vehicle securely with appropri­
ate stands if work is to be pe rformed under­
neath the vehicle; otherwise, there is a po ­
tential risk for injury.

An unstable surface under the jack can cause the
vehicle to slip off the jack. Always provide a firm
base for the jack on the ground . If necessary
p lace a sturdy board or similar support under the
jack . On

from slipp ing

A WARNING
- You or your passengers could be injured
wh ile chang ing a wheel if you do not follow
these safety precautions:
- Position the vehicle jack only at the desig­
nated lifting po ints and align the jack .
Otherwise, the vehicle jack could slip and
cause an injury if it does not have suff i­
cient hold on the vehicle.
- A soft or unstable surface under the jack
may cause the vehicle to slip off the jack.
Always provide a firm base for the jack on
the ground.
If necessary, use a sturdy
board under the jack.
- On hard, slippery surface (such as tiles)
use a rubber mat or similar to prevent the
jack from slipping.
- To help prevent injury to yourself and your
passengers:
- Do not raise the vehicle until yo u are sure
the jack is securely engaged .
- Passengers must not remain in the vehicle
when it is jacked up.
- Make sure that passengers wait in a safe
place away from the vehicle and well away
from the road and traffic.
- Make sure jack position is correct, adjust
as necessary and then continue to raise
the jack.
- Changes in temperature or load can affect
the height of the vehicle.

Do not lift the vehicle by the sill. Position the
vehicle jack only at the des ignated lifting
points on the sill. Otherwise, your vehicle will
be damaged.
@ Tips
The vehicle jack mode * switches off automati­
cally at speeds above 6 mph (10 km/h).
Removing and installing the sill extension
cover

.. Pull the cover down to remove it. c> fig. 208
.,. To install the cover, insert it in the mount and
press it upward until it clicks into place. The
cover must be flush with the surface of the sill
extens ion.
@ Tips
Some models may also have a cover for the
rear vehicle lift point.

Emergency assistance
-If the spare tire has to be installed in the incor­
rect direction, use the spare tire only tempora­
rily s ince the tire will not be able to achieve its
optimum performance characteristics with re­ gard to aquaplaning, noise and wear.
- We recommend that you pay particular atten­
tion to this fact during wet weather and that
you adjust your speed to match road condi­
tions.
- Replace the flat tire with a new one and have it
installed on your vehicle as soon as possible to
restore the handling advantages of a unid irec­
tiona l tire .
Notes on wheel changing
Please read the information r=:> page 240, New
tires or wheels
if you are going to use a spa re tire
which is diffe rent from the tires on your vehicle.
After you change a tire:
-Check the tire pressure on the spare immedi­
ately after installation.
- Have the wheel bolt tightening torque
checked with a torque wrench as soon as pos­
sible by your authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified service station.
- With steel and alloy wheel rims, the wheel
bolts are correctly tightened at a torque of 90
ft lb (120 Nm).
- If you notice that the wheel bolts are corroded
and difficult to turn while changing a tire,
they should be replaced before you check the
tightening torque.
- Replace the flat tire with a new one and have
it installed on your vehicle as soon as possi­
ble. Remount the wheel cover .
Until then, drive with extra care and at reduced
speeds .

-If you are going to equip your vehicle with
tires or rims which differ from those which
were factory installed, then be sure to read
the information

-Always make sure the damaged wheel or
even a flat tire and the jack and tool kit are
properly secured in the luggage compart­
ment and are not loose in the passenger
compartment.
- In an accident or sudden maneuver they
could fly forward, injuring anyone in the ve­
hicle.
- Always store damaged wheel, jack and tools
securely in the luggage compartment. Oth­
erwise, in an accident or sudden maneuver
they could fly forward, causing injury to pas­
sengers in the vehicle.

Improper hook-up of jumper cables can ruin
the generator.
- Always connect POSITIVE( +) to POSITIVE
( + ), and NEGATIVE( -) to NEGATIVE(-)
ground post of the battery manager control
unit.
- Check that all screw plugs on the battery
cells are screwed in firmly. If not, tighten
plugs prior to connecting clamp on negative
battery terminal.
- Please note that the procedure for connect­
ing a jumper cable as described
above ap­
plies specifically to the case of your vehicle
being jump started. When you are giving a
jump sta rt to another vehicle, do
not con­
nect the negative(-) cab le to the negative
( - ) terminal on the discharged battery @
r:::;, fig. 216. Instead, secure ly connect the
negative(-) cab le to either a solid metal
component that is firm ly bolted to the en­
gine block or to the engine block itself. If
the battery that is being charged does not
vent to the outs ide, escap ing battery gas
could ignite and explode!
Towing with a tow truck
General hints
Your Audi requires special handling for towing.
The follow ing information is to be used by com­
mercial tow truck operators who know how to op­
erate their eq uipment safe ly.
- Never t ow your Audi. To wing will cau se da m ­
age to the engine and tran smi ssion .
- Neve r wrap th e safety cha in s or win ch cab le s
around the brake line s.
- To pre vent unnecess ary dama ge, your A udi
mu st b e trans port ed w ith a fl at b ed t ru ck .
- To lo ad the vehicle on to th e flat bed, us e the
towing l oop found in th e vehicle tool s and at­
tach to th e fr ont or re a r anc hora ge
¢ page 267 and ¢page 268.

gers. Neve r all ow anyone to ride in a vehicle
being towed, for any reason .

Only install the rear towing loop when it is need­

There are threads located behind the right side of
the rear bumper where a towing loop can be in­
stalled. The threads are located behind a cover.
" Remove the towing loop from the vehicle tool
kit .

cap to remove it from the bumper

"Screw the towing loop tightly in the threaded
hole as far as it will go and tighten it with the
wheel wrench

Remove the towing loop when you are done using
it and place it back in the vehicle tool kit . Always
keep the towing loop in the vehicle.

If you do not screw the towing loop complete­
ly, it could come out of the threaded hole
while the vehicle is being towed causing dam·

sonal injury .

Check carefully to make sure the hook-up is
secure before moving the car up the flatbed
truck ramp.
Vehicle transport
Whenever you hove your vehicle transported, be
sure to note the following:

Mount the tie-down chains/cables over the
running surface (circumference) of the tires.
Never secure the vehicle by the axle, the sus­
pension struts or the front or rear towline
eye. For technical reasons, the pressure in the
suspension struts may change during the
transport and this will adversely affect vehicle handling.

scope of maintenance and repairs which can be
carried out by vehicle owners .

on the nature of repa irs and adjustments to en­
g ine and transmission parts which an owner can
perform.
Maintenance, adjustments and repa irs usua lly re­
qu ire spec ial tools, testing devices and other
equ ipment available to specially trained work­
shop perso nnel in order to assure proper per­
formance, reliab ility and safety of the vehicle and
its many systems.
Improper ma intenance, adjustments and repairs
can impair the operation and reliability of your
vehicle and even void your vehicle warranty .
Therefore, proof of se rv icing in accordance with
the m aintenance schedule may be a condi tion for
upho ld ing a possib le warranty cla im made w ith in
the warranty period .
Above all, operational safety can be adversely af­
fected, creating unnecessary r isks fo r you and
your passengers.
I f in doubt about any servicing, have it done by
your author ized Audi dealer or any other prope rly
equ ipped and qua lified workshop. We st rongly
urge you to give your authorized Audi dealer the
opport unity to perform all sched uled mainte­
nance and necessary repairs . Your dealer has the
fac ilities, origina l parts and trained specia lists to
keep yo ur vehicle runn ing properly.
P e rforming lim it e d ma inten anc e y ours elf
The fo llowing pages describe a limited number of
proced ures which can be performed on yo ur vehi­
cle with ordinary tools, should the need arise and
trained personne l be unavailable. Before per­
forming any of these procedures, always thor­
oughly read all of the applicable text and careful­
ly follow the instructions g iven . Always rigorously
observe the
W ARNINGS prov ided .

C o nsum er information
A WARNING
- Ser ious personal injury may occur as a result
of improperly performed maintenance, ad­
justments or repairs.
- Always be extremely careful when work ing
on the vehicle. Always follow commonly ac­
cepted safety practices and general com­ mon sense. Never ris k personal injury.
- Do not attempt any of the maintenance,
checks or repairs descr ibed on the following
pages if you are not fully familia r wi th these
or other procedures w ith respect to the vehi­
cle, or a re unce rtain how to proceed .
- Do not do any work without the proper tools
a nd eq uipment. Have the necessary work
done by your authorized Audi dealer or an­
other properly equipped and qualified work­
shop .
- The engine compar tment o f any motor vehi ­
cle is a potentially hazardous area. Never reach into the area around or touch the radi­
ator fan. It is temperature contro lled and
can switch on suddenly - even when the en­
g ine is off. The radiator fan sw itches on au­
tomatically when the coolant reaches a cer­
tain tempe ratu re and will continue to run
until the coolant temperature drops.
- Always sw itch off the ignition before anyone
gets under the vehicle.
- Always support your veh icle with safety
stands if it is necessary to work underneath
the vehicle. The jack supplied w ith the vehi­
cle is not adequate for this purpose and
could collapse caus ing serious personal in­
jury.
- If you m ust wor k underneath t he vehicle
with the wheels on the ground, a lways make
sure the vehicle is on level ground, that the
wheels are a lways secure ly blocked and that
the engine cannot be started.
- Always make sure the transmission se lector
lever (automatic transmiss ion) is in P (Park
position) and the park brake is applied.
