The vehicle must be lifted with the jack first
before the wheel can be removed.

An unstable surface under the jack can cause
the vehicle to slip off the jack. Always provide
a firm base for the jack on the ground. If nec
essary place a sturdy board or similar support
under the jack. On
hard, slippery surfaces
(such as tiles) use a rubber mat or similar to
prevent the jack from slipping

A WARNING ~
-You or your passengers could be injured
while changing a wheel if you do not fol
low these safety precautions:
- Position the vehicle jack only at the
designated lifting points and align the
jack. Otherwise, the vehicle jack could slip and cause an injury if it does not
have sufficient hold on the vehicle.
- A soft or unstable surface under the
jack may cause the vehicle to slip off
the jack . Always provide a firm base for
the jack on the ground. If necessary,
use a sturdy board under the jack.
- On hard, slippery surface (such as tiles)
use a rubber mat or similar to prevent
the jack from slipping.
- To help prevent injury to yourself and
your passengers:
- Do not raise the vehicle until you are
sure the jack is securely engaged.
- Passengers must not remain in the ve
hicle when it is jacked up.
- Make sure that passengers wait in a
safe place away from the vehicle and
well away from the road and traffic .
- Make sure jack position is correct, ad
just as necessary and then continue to
raise the jack.
- Changes in temperature or load can af
fect the height of the vehicle.

Taking the wheel off/installing the spare
Follow these instructions step-by-step for
changing the wheel.

After yo u have loosened all wheel bo lts and
raised the vehicle off the ground, remove and
replace the wheel as follows:
Removing the wheel
.,. Use the hexagonal soc ket in the scr ewdriv
er handle
to completely remove the top
most whee l bolt and se t it aside on a
clean
surface r=> fig. 228 .
.,. Screw the threaded end of the alignme nt
pin from the tool kit hand-t ight into th e
empty bolt hole

.,. Then remove the other whee l bolts as de
scribed above.
.,. Take off the whee l leaving the a lignment pin
in the bo lt ho le r=> 0 .
Putting on the spare wheel
.,. Lift the spare whee l and carefully s lide it
over the alignment p in to g uide it in place

.,. Use the hexagona l socket in th e screwdriver
ha ndle to screw in and tig hten all whee l
bolts
slightly.
.,. Remove the al ignment pin and insert and
tighten the remain ing wheel bolt slightly
like the rest .
.,. Turn the jack hand le counter-clockwise to
lower the vehicle until the jack is fully re
leased .
.,. Use the wheel bo lt wrench to tighten all
wheel bo lts fi rm ly

crosswise, from o ne bolt to the (ap
p rox ima tely) opposi te one, to keep the
wheel ce nte red .

seco nd person hel p you.
(D Tips
Never use the hexagon al socke t in the han
d le of t he screwdriver to loosen or tighten
the wheel bo lts .

@ Tips
Check carefully to make sure the hook-up
is secure before moving the car up the flat
bed truck ramp.
Vehicle transport
Whenever you hove your vehicle transported,
be sure to note the following:
(D Note
Mount the tie-down chains/cables over the
running surface (circumference) of the
tires. Never secure the vehicle by the axle,
the suspension struts or the front or rear
towline eye. For technical reasons, the
pressure in the suspension struts may
change du ring the transport and this will
adve rsely affect vehicle handling.
Lifting vehicle
Lifting with workshop hoist and with
floor jack
The vehicle may only be li~ed at the lifting
points illustrated.

• Adjust lifting arms of wo rkshop hoist o r
floor jack to match veh icle lifting points.
• Insert a rubber pad be tween the floo r jack/
workshop hoist and the lift ing po ints .
The vehicle jack mode must be activated so
that the automat ic adjustment of the Adap
tive Ai r Suspens ion does not make it more dif
fic ult to raise the vehicle with the floor ja ck.
If you mu st l ift your vehicle with a fl oor jack
t o wo rk underneath , be sure the vehi cle i s
s af ely s upported on stand s intended for thi s
purpose.
Front lifting point
The lifting point is located on the floor pan re
i nforcement about at the same leve l as the
jac k mounting point

The lifting point is located o n the vert ical rein
forcement of the lower sill for the on-board

vehicle damage .
- Always lift the vehicle only at the spe
c ia l workshop ho ist and floor jack lift
points illustrated

- Fail ure to lift the vehicle at these
po ints co uld cause the vehicle to tilt or
fall from a lift if there is a change in ve
hicle weight distribution and balance.
This might happen, for example, when h eavy components such as the eng ine
block or transmission are removed.

- When removing heavy components like
these, ancho r vehicle to ho ist o r add cor
responding weig hts to ma inta in the cen
ter of g ravity. Othe rwise, the vehicle
m ight tilt o r slip off t he hoist, causi ng
serious p erson al inju ry .
@ Note
- Be awa re of the following points befo re
li fting the vehicle:
- The vehicle should never be lifted or
jacked up from underneath the engine
oil pan, the transmission housing , the
front or rear axle or the body side membe rs. This could lead to serious
damage.
- To avoid damage to the underbody or
chassis frame, a rubber pad must be
inserted between the floor jack and
the lift points.
- Before driving over a workshop hoist,
check that the veh icle weight does not
exceed the permissible lifting capacity
of the hoist .
-Before driving over a workshop hoist,
ensure that there is sufficient clear
ance between the hoist and low parts
of the vehicle.
