A WARNING
Whenever work ing on the battery or on the
elect rical system, there is the risk of injury,
accident and
even fire. Read and heed the fol­
lowing WARN INGS :
- Always wea r eye protection. Do not let bat­
te ry acid or any lead pa rticles get on your
sk in or cloth ing . Sh ield your eyes. Explosive
gases can cause blindness or other injury .
- Battery acid con tains su lfu ric acid. Sulfur ic
acid c an cause blindness and
severe bu rns.
- Always wear gloves and eye protection. Do
no t tilt the battery because acid could leak
out of the ventilat ion open ings .
- If you get battery ac id in your eyes or on
your skin, immediately rinse with cold wa­
ter for several minutes and get medical at­ tention .
- If you should ingest any battery acid, seek
medical attention immediately .
- Do not expose the battery to an open flame,
electric sparks or an open light .
- Do not smoke.
- Do not interchange the positive and nega-
t ive cables.
- When working on the battery, be sure not to
short-circuit the term inals with tools or oth ­
er metal objects. Th is wou ld cause the bat­
tery to heat up very quickly, which could
lead to damage or explosion and personal
injury .
- When a battery is charged, it produces hy ­
drogen gas which is explosive and could
ca use personal injury.
- Always keep the battery well out of the reach of ch ildre n.

-Before wo rk is done on the electrical sys­
tem, disconnect the negative gro und cable.
- Before performing any work on the e lectri­
cal system, switch off the engine and ign i­
tion as well as any electrical equ ipment . The
negat ive cab le on the battery must be dis­
connected . If you are just going to replace a
light bulb, then it is enough to switch off
the lights.
- Before d isconnecting the battery, switch off
the an ti-theft alarm system! Otherwise you
will set off the alarm.
- When disconnecting the battery, first dis­
connect the negative cab le and then the
positive cable.
- Before reconnect ing the battery, make sure
all electr ica l consume rs a re switched off .
Reconnect the positive cable firs t and then
the negative cable . Never in terch ange t he
cables -this could sta rt a fire!
- Never cha rge a frozen or a thawed-ou t bat­
tery . It cou ld explode ! If a ba ttery has fro­
zen, then it must be replaced. A discharged
battery can freeze over at 32°F (0°C) .
- Make sure the
vent hose is always attached
to the opening on the side of the battery .
- Never use bat ter ies which are damaged.
There is the danger of an exp losion! Always
replace a damaged battery .
A WARNING

- Ba tte ry posts, te rm inals and related acces­
sories contain lead and lead compounds,
chemicals known to the State o f Cali fornia
to cause cancer and reproductive problems.
Wash hands after handling.

- Do not disconnect the vehicle battery when
the ignition is switched on or when the en­
gine is running, otherwise, you will damage
electronic components in the electrical sys­
tem .

Battery charging
Starting the engine requires a well charged bat­
tery.

Battery charging (Maximum charging rate of

When charging at /ow voltages (e.g. w ith a t ric k­
le charge r),
the battery cables do not have to be
disco nnected f irst . The battery caps should
not
be opened when charging a battery .
It is not necessa ry to remove the battery from
the luggage compartment.
Fa st charging the batt ery (cha rging rate
above 14 .8 Volt s)
For technical reasons do not use a battery charg­
er that uses vo ltage greater than 14.8 Volts to
charge your veh icle's battery .
A WARNING
-
Charging a battery can be dange rous.
- Always follow the operating instructions
provided by t he battery cha rge r manufactur­
er when charging yo ur battery .
- Never charge a frozen battery. It may ex­
p lode because of gas trapped in the ice. Al­
low a froze n battery to thaw out first .
- Do not reuse batteries which were frozen .
The batte ry hous ing may have c racked and
weakened when the battery froze .
- Charge the battery in a well ve ntilated area .
Keep away from open flame or electrical
spa rk. Do not smoke . Hydrogen gas generat­
ed by the batte ry is explos ive.
- To reduce the danger of exp losion, never
connect or d isconnect charge r cables while
t he charger is ope ra ting.
- F ast charg ing a battery is d ange rous and
should only be at tempted by a competen t
technici an with the prope r equipmen t.
- Ba ttery a cid that may spill duri ng cha rging
should be washe d off w it h a so lution of
warm water and baking soda to neutra lize
the acid.

after switc hing the ignition on or whi le driving
and the
RI] i ndicator light in the instrument cl us­
ter blinks for approximate ly one minute and then
stays on, there is system malfunction. Try to
store the correct tire pressures¢

the ind icator light does tur n off or turns on again
after a short period of t ime, dr ive to you r auth or­
ized A udi dealer o r autho riz ed Aud i Service Faci li­
ty immedia tely to have the malfunct ion corre ct­
ed .
A WARNING
- If the ti re pressu re indicator appears in the
display, reduce your speed immediate ly and
avoid any hard steering or braking maneu­
vers. Stop as soon as possib le and check the
t ires and t heir pressu re.
- The driver is responsib le for maintaining the
correct tire pressure. You must check the
t ire pressure regu larly .
- Under certain conditions (such as a sporty
dr iv ing style, winter cond itions o r unpaved
roads), the tire pressure mo nitoring system
indicator may be delayed.
- Do not use r un-flat tires on your vehicle. Us­
ing them when not permitted can lead to
vehicle damage or accidents.
(D Tips
- The t ire pressure monitoring system can al­
so stop work ing when there is an ESC mal­
funct io n.
- Using snow chains may result in a system
malfunction.
- The t ires with the identification "AO" or
"RO" ¢
page 198 have been matched with
your Audi tire pressure monitoring system .
W e recommend that you use these t ires.

it must be confirmed in the Infotainment sys­

Replacing light bulbs
For your safety, we recommend that you have
your authorized Audi dealer replace any bulbs for
you .
It is becoming increasingly more and more diffi­
cult to replace vehicle light bulbs since in many
cases, other parts of the car m ust first be re­
moved before you are able to get to the bulb .
T his applies especially to the light bulbs in the
front of your car which you can only reach
through the engine compartment .
Sheet metal and bu lb holders can have sharp
edges that can cause serious cuts, pa rts must be
correctly taken apart and then properly put back
together to help prevent breakage o f parts and
long term damage from water that can enter
housings that have not been properly resealed.
For your safety, we recommend t hat you have
your authorized Aud i dea le r rep lace any bulbs fo r
you, since your dealer has the proper tools, the
correct bulbs and the expertise.
Gas di schar ge la mps (Xe no n light s):
Due to the high electr ical voltage, have the bulbs
rep laced by a qualified technician. Headlights
with Xenon light are identified by the hig h volt­
age st icker.
LED headlights* require no maintenance . Please
contact your authorized Audi dea ler if a bulb
needs to be replaced.
_&. WARNING
Changing Xenon lamps wi thout the necessary
equipment can cause serious personal injury .
- Bulbs are pressu rized and can explode when
be ing changed. Potent ial ris k of injury!
- On veh icles equipped with gas disc harge
bu lbs (Xenon light) life-threatening injuries
can resu lt from improper handling of the
high-vo ltage portions of such lamps!
- Only your authorized A udi dealer or quali­
fied workshop sho uld change the bulbs in
gas discharge lamps. There are parts with
sharp edges on the openings and on the

Safety compliance sticker
The safety compliance sticker is your assurance
that your new vehicle complies w ith all applicable
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards which
were in effect at the time the vehicle was manu­
factured. You can find this sticker on the door
jamb on the driver 's side. It shows the month and
year of production and the vehicle identification number of your vehicle (perforation) as well as
the Gross Vehicle Weight Rat ing (GVWR) and the
Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR).
H igh voltage warning label
The high voltage warning label is located in the
engine compartment next to the engine hood re­
lease. The spark ignition system complies with
the Canadian standard ICES-002.
Weights
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), and
the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) for front
and rear are listed on a sticker on the door jamb
on the driver 's side.
The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating includes the
weight of the basic vehicle plus full fuel tank, oil
and coolant, plus maximum load, which includes
passenger weight (150 lbs/68 kg per des ignated
seating position) and luggage weight

today's automobiles, have steadily reduced the
scope of maintenance and repairs which can be
carried out by vehicle owners.
Also, safety and
environmental
concerns place very strict limits
on the nature of repairs and adjustments to en­
gine and transmission parts which an owner can perform .
Maintenance, adjustments and repairs usually re­
quire special tools, testing devices and other
equipment available to specially trained work ­
shop personnel in order to assure proper per­
formance, reliability and safety of the vehicle and
its many systems.
Improper maintenance, adjustments and repairs
can impair the operation and reliability of your
vehicle and even void your vehicle warranty .
Therefore, proof of servicing in accordance with
the maintenance schedule may be a condition for upholding a possible warranty claim made within
the warranty period.
Above all , operational safety can be adversely af­
fected, creating unnecessary risks for you and
your passengers.
If in doubt about any servicing, have it done by
your authorized Audi dealer or any other properly equipped and qualified workshop. We strongly urge you to give your authorized Audi dealer the
opportunity to perform all scheduled mainte­ nance and necessary repairs. Your dealer has the
facilities, original parts and trained specialists to keep your vehicle running properly .
Performing limited maintenance yourself
The following pages describe a limited number of
procedures which can be performed on your vehi­
cle with ordinary tools, should the need arise and
trained personnel be unavailable. Before per­
forming any of these procedures, always thor­
oughly read all of the applicable text and careful­ ly follow the instructions given . Always rigorously
observe the
WARNINGS provided .
Before you check anything in the engine com­
partment, always read and heed all WARNINGS

ment on page 177. Consumer information
A WARNING
-
Serious personal injury may occur as a result
of improperly performed maintenance, ad­
justments or repairs .
- Always be extremely careful when working
on the vehicle. Always follow commonly ac­
cepted safety practices and general com­
mon sense. Never risk personal injury.
- Do not attempt any of the maintenance,
checks or repairs described on the following pages if you are not fully familiar with these
or other procedures with respect to the ve­ hicle, or are uncertain how to proceed.
- Do not do any work without the proper tools
and equipment. Have the necessary work
done by your authorized Audi dealer or an­
other properly equipped and qualified work­
shop.
- The engine compartment of any motor vehi­ cle is a potentially hazardous area. Never
reach into the area around or touch the radi­
ator fan.
It is temperature controlled and
can switch on suddenly - even when the en­
gine is off and the ignition key has been re­
moved. The radiator fan switches on auto­
matically when the coolant reaches a certain
temperature and will continue to run until
the coolant temperature drops.
- Always remove the ignition key before any­
one gets under the vehicle.
- Always support your vehicle with safety
stands if it is necessary to work underneath
the vehicle. The jack* supplied with the vehi­
cle is not adequate for this purpose and
could collapse causing serious personal in­
jury.
- If you must work underneath the vehicle
with the wheels on the ground, always make
sure the vehicle is on level ground, that the
wheels are always securely blocked and that the engine cannot be started.
- Always make sure the transmission selector
lever (automatic transmission) is in P (Park
position) and the park brake is applied.
