Odometer

Trip odomete r and odomete r
The trip odometer @ shows the distance driven
since it was last reset. It can be used to measure
short distances .
The trip odometer can be reset to zero by pressÂ
ing the
j o.o l reset button @ c> page 8, fig. 3.
The odometer ® shows the total distance that
the vehicle has been driven.
Malfunction indicator
I f there is a malfunction in the inst rument cl usÂ
ter,
DEF w ill appear in the trip odomete r display .
Have the malfunct ion corrected as soon as possiÂ
ble.
Indicator lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blin k or t urn on. They indicate funct ions or ma lÂ
functions . Wi th some indicator lights, messages
may appear and war ning s ignals may sound.
Some indicator lights are shown in multiple colÂ
ors in the inst rument cl uste r display.
Display in Driver information sy stem
The indicator lights and messages in the display
can be covered by other displays . D isplay ing drivÂ

Overview
Some indicator lights t urn on brief ly as a function
check when you switch the ignition on. These sysÂ
tems are marked with a./ in the follow ing tab les.
If one of these ind icator lights does not turn on,
there is a malfunct io n in that system.

Opening and closing
Central locking
Description
You can lock and unlock the veh icle centrally . You
have the following options:
- Remote control key
c> page 25,
-Sensors in the door handles* c> page 26,
-Inner central locking switch c> page 2 7, or
- Lock cylinder on the driver's door
c> page 28.
Turn signals
The turn s ignals flash tw ice when you un lock the
veh icle and flash once when you lock the vehicle.
If the vehicle is unlocked and the flashing continÂ
ues, then
- one of the doors or the luggage compa rtment
lid is open,
- the ignition is still switched on, or
- the P selector lever position (vehicles with au -
tomat ic transmission*) is not engaged.
Auto Lock
The Auto Lock function locks all doors and the
luggage compartment lid once the speed has exÂ
ceeded approximately 9 mph (15 km/h) .
T he vehicle can be unlocked if the opening funcÂ
tion in the central locking system switch is used,
one of the door handles is pulled or the ignition key is removed.
In the event of a crash with airbag deployment,
the doors will also automatically unlock to allow
access to the vehicle.
Selective door unlocking
The doors and luggage compartment lid will lock
when they close. You can set in the Infotainment
system if
only the driver's door or the entire vehi Â
cle shou ld unlock when unlocking
c> page 27 ,
Setting the central locking system.
Unintentionally locking yourself out

Opening and closing
- If the driver's door is open, the vehicle cannot
be locked by pressing the
fi'.J button on the reÂ
mote contro l key or touching the locking senÂ
sor* on a door.
- When locking using the
ffi button in the central
locking switch, the vehicle will not lock if a door
is open
c> page 27.
- If the most recently used convenience key* is in
the luggage compartment, the luggage comÂ
partment lid automatically unlocks again after
closing it
c> page 28. The emergency flashers
blink four times.
Do not lock your vehicle with the remote control
key or convenience key* until all doors and the
luggage compartment lid are closed . This helps
to prevent you from locking yourself out acc idenÂ
tally .
A WARNING
- When you leave the vehicle, always remove
the ignition key and take it with you. This
will prevent passengers (children, for examÂ
ple) from accidenta lly being locked in the
vehicle should they accidentally press the
power locking switch in the front doors.
- Do not leave children inside the vehicle unÂ
supervised. In an emergency it would be imÂ
possible to open the doors from the outside
without the key.
(D Tips
- Do not leave valuables unattended in the veÂ
hicle. A locked vehicle is not a safe!
- The LED in the driver's door rail blinks when
you lock the vehicle . If the LED lights up for
approximately 30 seconds after locking,
there is a malfunction in the central locking
system . Have the problem corrected by an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility.

-The vehicle can only be locked when theseÂ
l ector lever is in the P position (automatic
transmission).
- Do not use t he remote control when you are
inside the vehicle . Otherwise, you could unÂ
i ntentionally lock the vehicle. If you then
tried to start the engine or open a door, the
a larm wou ld be triggered. If this happens,
press the
CD unlock button.
- Only use the panic funct ion in an emergenÂ
cy.
Locking and unlocking with the
convenience key
A pp lies to : ve hicles w ith conven ience key
The doors and luggage compartment lid can be
unlocked/locked without using the remote con trol key.

Unlocking the vehicle
• To unlock the d river's or front passenger's door,
grab the door hand le of the respective door .
The door unlocks automatically.
• To open the door, pull the door hand le.
• To open the luggage compartment lid, press
the grip piece in the luggage compartment lid
c> page28.
Locking the vehicle
Requirement: the P selector lever position must
be engaged and all doors must be closed.
• To lock the vehicle, close the door an d touch
the sensor on the door handle
on ce c> fig. 17,
c> .&, . Do not hold the door hand le wh ile doing
this.

Un locking and locking the vehicle can o nly be
done at the front doors . The remote control key
cannot be more than approx imately
4 ft (1.5 m)
away from the door handle. It makes no differÂ
ence whether the master key is in your jacket
pocket or in your briefcase, for example.
The door cannot be opened for a brief period d iÂ
rectly after locking it. This way you have the opÂ
portunity to check if the doors locked correctly.
You can set in the Infotainment system if
only
the driver 's door or the entire vehicle should unÂ
l ock when unlock ing
c> page 27. In vehicles
without an Infotainment system, you can unlock
the entire vehicle using se lective doo r unlocking .

Read and heed all WARNINGS c> ,& in DescripÂ
tion on page 23.
(D Tips
If your vehicle is left standing for a long periÂ
od of t ime, note the following:
- The proximity sensor sw itches off after a
few days to
save ene rgy. You then have to
pull once on the door handle to unlock the
vehicle and a second time to ope n it.
- The energy management system gradually
tu rns off unnecessary convenience functions
to prevent the veh icle battery from drain ing
and to main tain the ve hicl e's ability to start
for as long as poss ible. You may no t be ab le
to unlo ck your veh icle using the conven ience
key.

Driving
General information
Breaking in
A new vehicle must be broken in, and the break in distance should be 1,000 miles (1,500 km).
For the first 600 miles (1,000 km), do not drive
at speeds that are more than 2/3 of the maxiÂ
mum permitted RPM, avoid full acceleration and
do not tow a trailer. You may gradually start inÂ
creasing the RPM and the speed between 600 miles (1,000 km) and 1,000 miles (1,500 km) .
During the first hours of use, the engine has a
higher internal friction than later on when all
moving parts have settled into place with each
other.
How the vehicle is driven during the first 1,000
miles (1,500 km) also affects the engine quality.
Drive at moderate engine speeds after the initial
break-in period, particularly when running a cold
engine . This will reduce engine wear and improve
the mileage .
Do not drive at too
low of an engine speed (rpm).
Shift down if the engine stops running "smooth ly". Extremely high engine speeds are automatiÂ
cally reduced .
Avoid damaging the vehicle
When you are driving on poor roads, or over
curbs, steep ramps , etc., make certain that lowÂ
lying parts such as spoilers and exhaust system
parts do not bottom out and get damaged.
This is especially true for vehicles with low-slung
chassis (sports chassis)* and fully loaded
vehicles.
Driving through water on roads
Note the following to reduce the risk of vehicle
damage when driving through water, for example
on flooded roads:
- The water must not be any higher than the botÂ
tom of the vehicle body.
- Do not drive faster than walking speed.

After driving through water or mud, the effecÂ
tiveness of the brakes may be reduced due to
moisture on the brake rotors and brake pads.
A few careful brake applications should dry
off the brakes.

Vehicle components such as the engine,
transmission, suspension or electrical system
can be severely damaged by driving through
water.
(D Tips
- Determine the depth before driving through
water.
- Do not stop the vehicle, drive in reverse or
switch the engine off when driving through
water.
- Keep in mind that oncoming vehicles may
create waves that raise the water level and
make it too deep for your vehicle to drive
through safely.
-Avoid driving through salt water, because
this can cause corrosion.
Economical and environmentally-friendly
driving
The amount of fuel consumption, the environÂ
mental impact and the wear to the engine,
brakes and tires depends mostly on your driving
style . With an anticipatory and economic driving
style, fuel consumption can be reduced by ap proximately 10-15%. The following tips will help
you conserve the environment and your money at
the same time.
Anticipatory driving
A vehicle uses the most fuel when accelerating .
When you drive with anticipation, you do not need to brake as often and so you accelerate less.
When possible , let your vehicle coast with a gear
engaged, for example, when you notice that the
next traffic light is red. This produces an engine
braking effect, which helps to protect the brakes
and tires and reduces the emissions and fuel

- Please note that the wheels can spin more
and the vehicle can swerve when in ESC offÂ
road mode, especially when the road is s lipÂ
pery or has loose surface material.
- Driv ing stability is reduced in the ESC OffÂ
road mode.
@ For the sake of the environment
Avoid harming the environment and show consideration for nature.
@ Tips
Only drive where it is a llowed and always stay
on the provided roads and paths.
Driving information
Applies to: ve hicles with offroad mode
There is only one right way to drive in difficult
conditions: slowly and with caution!
Observe the follow ing when driving on unpaved
roads:
"' Only drive in terrain that is suitable for the veÂ
hicle and your d riving ab ility. Never take any
unnecessary risks!
.,. Drive slowly and cautiously!
.,. Pay attention to the ground clearance of your
vehicle! The clearance may vary depending on
the load, ground composition and the environÂ
ment. The ground clearance is reduced for speÂ
cial suspension systems, such as sport suspenÂ
s ion. The driver is therefore respons ible for de Â
c iding whether a vehicle can handle a specific
s ituation .

.,. Use the hill descent assist when driving down
steep hills

Difficult terrain
When driving in unfami liar a reas and offroad,
d rive slowly and keep on the watch for unexpectÂ
ed obstacles (such as potholes, rocks, tree
stumps, etc.) .
To prevent the veh icle from bottoming out and to
reduce the risk of underbody damage, you shou ld
d rive across uneven ground on only one side of D
riving
the vehicle so that only two of your wheels cross
the uneven area, instead of driving across the
center of the uneven area with all four wheels.
Drive quickly thro ugh sandy o r marshy off-road
sections and do not stop, if at all possible.
Driving through water on roads

Automatic transmission
Introduction
The automatic transmission is controlled elecÂ
tronically. The transmission shifts up or down auÂ
tomat ically depending on which dr ive program is
selected .
When a moderate driving style is used, the
transmission selects the most economical dr iving
mode . The transmission upshifts at a lower RPM
and downsh ifts at a higher RPM to improve fuel
efficiency .
The transmission switches to a sporty mode after a kick-down or when the driver uses a sporty
driving style characterized by quick accelerator
peda l movements, heavy acceleration, frequent
changes in speed and t raveli ng at t he maximum
speed.
If desired, the driver can also select the gears
manually (tiptronic mode) r::;, page 71, Manual
shifting (tiptronic mode).
Power is transferred using a torque converter .

Automatic shift lock (ASL )
The selector lever is locked in the P and N pos iÂ
tions when the ignition is sw itched on . The reÂ
move it from these posit ions, the driver must
press the brake pedal and press the lock button
at the same time. The following message ap pears in the instr ument cluster disp lay when t he
selec to r l ever is in the P or N posi tion to remi nd
the driver:
Pr ess brake to change gear while stationar y.
The automatic shift lock only functions when the
veh icle is stationary or at speeds below 1 mph
(2 km/h). At h igher speeds , the lock is automatiÂ
cally dea ctivated i n the N position.

The selector leve r is not locked whe n shifting
quick ly through N , for example from R to D. This
makes it possible to free the veh icle when it is
stuck by "rocking" it. The selector lever lock enÂ
gages if the lever stays in the N pos ition longer
than 2 seconds when the brake peda l is not
pressed .
Interlock button
The interlock b utton in the selector lever hand le
prevents you from moving the selector lever inÂ
advertently wh ile in some selector lever posiÂ
tions. The positions that requ ire the interlock
button to be pressed a re marked in colo r in t he ilÂ
l ustrat ion <=>

P - Park
This selector lever position prevents the vehicle
from rolling. You can only shift into Park when
the ve hicle is
stationary c:> A .
To sh ift in and out of the P selector lever posiÂ
tion, press the interlock button in the selector
lever
while pressing the brake pedal.
R -Rever se
Only s hift i nto reve rse gear when the veh icle is
stationary and the engine is running at id le
speed ¢

interlock button
while pressing the brake pedal.
The reverse lights turn on when you select the R
selector lever position while the engine is run Â
ning .
N -Neutral
The transmission is in idle in th is posi tion .
To engage the
N sele ctor leve r pos it ion, press the
b utton on the selecto r leve r and shift into the N
pos ition.
To move from selector leve r pos it ion out of
N,
you m ust press the brake peda l and the vehicle
mus t be trave ling less than 1 mph (2 k m/h) or be
stationary.
D IS -Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S se lector lever position, the transmisÂ
s io n can be operated eithe r in the normal D mode ..,_

or in the 5 sport mode. The instrument cluster
display shows the selected driving mode.
In the
normal mode D, the transmission autoÂ
matically selects the suitable gear ratio.
It deÂ
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driving
style.
Select the
sport mode 5 for sporty driving. The
vehicle makes full use of the engine's power.
Shifting may become noticeable when acceleratÂ
ing.
To move from selector lever position N to D, you
must press the brake pedal and the vehicle must
be traveling less than 1 mph (2 km/h) or be staÂ
tionary ¢&. .
A WARNING
Read and follow all WARNINGS¢&. in DrivÂ
ing tips on page
70.
@ Note
Coasting downhill with the transmission in N
and the engine not running will result in damÂ
age to the automatic transmission and possiÂ
bly the catalytic converter.
(D Tips
- If you accidentally select N while driving,
take your foot off the accelerator pedal and
wait for the engine to slow down to idle beÂ
fore selecting Dor 5.
- If there is a power failure, the selector lever
will not move out of the P position. The
emergency release can be used if this hapÂ
pens ¢
page 72.
Driving tips
Starting the engine
.. The selector lever must be in the P or the N poÂ
sition.
Starting from a stop
.. Press and hold the brake pedal.

and the vehicle will start moving once you press
the accelerator pedal.
Stopping/parking
If the selector lever is not in the P position when
you open the driver's door, the vehicle could roll.
In vehicles with a convenience key*, the message
Shift to P and turn off ignition, or vehicle can
roll away
appears.

Stopping on an incline
.. Always press the brake pedal to hold the vehiÂ
cle in place and prevent it from "rolling back"

Starting on a hill
.. Set the parking brake .
.. Select the D position .
.. Press the accelerator pedal carefully. If your
safety belt is fastened, the parking brake is auÂ
tomatically released and your vehicle begins to
move.

Driving
Under certain circumstances, (such as driving in
the mountains or towing a trailer), it may be useÂ
ful to switch temporarily to the manual shift pro gram in order to manually adapt the gear to the
driving conditions
c::> page 71.
On inclines, activate the parking brake first and
then move the selector lever to the P position
c::> page 65. This prevents the locking mechanism
from being loaded too heavily and will make it
easier to move the selector lever out of the P po Â
sition .
_& WARNING
-The vehicle can also roll when the engine is
stopped.
- Unintended vehicle movement can cause seÂ
rious injury.
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear. If you must leave
your vehicle when the engine is running, acÂ
tivate the parking brake and move the selecÂ
tor lever to P.
- Power is still transmitted to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To preÂ
vent the vehicle from "creeping", you must
keep your foot on the brake when the enÂ
gine is running and the selector lever is in D/
Sor R or "tiptronic" mode is selected.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when
changing the selector lever position while
the vehicle is stationary and the engine is running .
- Never shift into R or P while driving.
- Before driving down a steep slope, reduce
your speed and shift into a lower gear with
"tiptron ic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially reÂ
duces braking performance, increases brakÂ
ing distance or causes complete failure of
the brake system.
- To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it in
place with the brake pedal or parking brake.

- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with a
slipping clutch. The clutch opens automatiÂ

- If the engine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure theseÂ
lector lever has securely engaged and is
locked in P with the parking brake set

gine speed may set the vehicle in motion,
even with the parking brake applied.
(D Note
- When stopping on an incline, do not try to
hold the vehicle in place by pressing the acÂ
celerator pedal while a driving gear is seÂ
lected. This can cause the automatic transÂ
mission to overheat and can damage it. Set
the parking brake or press the brake pedal
to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
- Allowing the vehicle to roll when th@ engine
is stopped while the selector lever is in the
N position will damage the automatic trans Â
mission, because it is not lubricated under
those circumstances

- The transmission can overheat and be damÂ
aged under certain driving and traffic condiÂ
tions such as frequent starts, creeping for a
long time, or stop-and-go traffic. If the.
indicator light turns on, stop the vehicle at

Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the driver
when driving down hills.
Hill descent control is activated when the selecÂ
tor lever is in the D or S position and you press
the brake pedal. The transmission automatically
selects a gear that is suitable for the hill. Hill deÂ

Hi ll descent contro l cannot overcome physical
limitations, so it may not be able to maintain
a constant speed under a ll conditions. Always
be ready to apply the brakes.
Manual shifting (tiptronic mode)
The tiptronic mode allows the driver to shift the
gears manually .

Shifting with the selector lever
You can s hift into tiptronic mode while stationary
and while driv ing.
• To sh ift into t iptronic mode, p ush the selector
lever from the 0/5 setting to the right in the
tiptronic sh ift gate. Once the transmission has
switched modes, the se lecto r lever position

Kick-down enables maximum ac celeration.
When you press the accelerator pedal down beÂ
yond the resistance point (ca lled kick-down), t he
automa tic transmission downshifts in to a lower
gear, depending on vehicle speed and eng ine
RPM. It s hifts up into the next h igher gear o nce
the maximum specifie d engine RPM is reached .
