Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome­
chanica l parking brake . The parking brake is
des igned to prevent the vehicle from ro lling
un intent ionally and replaces the hand brake.
I n addition to the norma l functions of a tradi­
tional hand brake, the electromechanica l
parking brake provides various convenience
and safety functions.
When start ing f rom re st
- T he integral starting assist helps you when
driving by automatically releasing the park­
ing brake ¢

-When starting on inclines, the starting as­
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentional­
l y rolling back. The braking force of the
parking brake is not released until sufficient
driv ing force has been built up at the
wheels .

A WARNING
--When you leave your vehicle -even if on-
ly briefly -always remove the ignition
key. Th is applies pa rticularly when chil­
dren remain in the vehicle. Otherwise the
children could sta rt the eng ine, release
the par king brake or operate electrical
equ ipment (e.g. power windows). There
is the risk of an acc ident.

-When the vehicle is locked, no one - par­
t icu larly not ch ildren should remain in
the vehicle. Locked doors make it more
difficult for emergency workers to get in­
to the vehicle - putt ing lives at risk .
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .

Starting and automatically relea sing the
par king brake
.. When you start to drive as usua l, the park­
ing brake is automatically re leased and your
vehicle begins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signa l or stopping
in city traffic on vehicles with an automatic
transmission, the park ing brake can be ap­
plied . The veh icle does not have to be held
with the footbrake. The park ing brake elimi­
nates the tendency to creep with a drive range
engaged. As soon as you dr ive off as usual,
the park ing brake is released automatically
and the veh icle sta rts to move.
Starting on slope s
When starting on inclines, the start ing ass ist
prevents the vehicle from unintentionally roll­
i ng back . The braking force of the pa rking
brake is not released until sufficient dr iv ing
fo rce has been bu ilt up at the whee ls.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the park ing brake is re­
leased automatically only when the dr iv­
er 's safety belt is engaged in the bu ck le.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an
incline, do the following:
• Keep the switch pulled and depress the ac­
celerator . The parking brake stays applied
and prevents the vehicle from roll ing back ­
ward .
• Yo u can re lease the switch once you a re su re
tha t you are deve lopi ng enough d riving
force a t th e wheels by depressing the acce l­
erator.
Depend ing on the we igh t of the rig (vehi cle
and t railer) and the severity of the incline, yo u
may ro ll backwa rds as yo u start . You can pre­
vent rolling backwa rds by holding the parking
brake switc h pulled out and accelerating - just
as you would when starting on a hill with a
convent ional hand brake.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys­
tem fails or locks.
.. In an emergency, pull the switch and con ­
tinue to pull it to slow your vehicle down
w ith the park ing brake.
• As soon as you release the switch or acceler-
ate, the brak ing process stops.
If you p ull the switch and ho ld it above a
speed of abo ut 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy brak ing funct ion is initiated . The ve hicle is
braked at all four whee ls by activating the hy­
draulic b rake system . The brake performa nce
i s sim ilar to making an emergency stop~& .
In order not to act ivate the emergency brak­
i ng by mistake, an audib le warning tone (buz­
zer) sounds when the switch is pu lled. As soon
as the switch is re leased, or the accele rato r
peda l is depressed, eme rgency b raking stops .
A WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in
an emergency, when the norma l foot bra ke
has fai led or the brake pedal is obs tructed. .,..

Using the parking brake to perform emer­
gency braking will slow your vehicle down
as if you had made a full brake applicat ion.
The laws of physics cannot be suspended
even w ith ESC and its associated compo­
nents (ABS, ASR, EDS) . In corners and
when road or weather conditions are bad, a full b rake application can cause the vehi­
cle to skid or the rear end to break away -
risking an accident.
Driver messages in the instrument
cluster

Start-Stop-System
Description
Appl ies to vehicles : wit h Start -Stop-System
The Star t-S top -System can he lp inc rease f ue l
economy and red uce CO2 emissions .
I n the Start-Stop-mode, the eng ine shuts off
a utomatically when the vehicle is stopped,
such as at a traffic ligh t. T he ig nition remains
switched on during t his stop phase. The en -

Basic requirements for the Start -Stop
mod e

- The vehicle must have been dr iven faster

2.5 mph (4 km/h) since the last stop.
- A trailer is not hitched to the vehicle.
A WARNING
- Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a comp lete stop. The
full funct ion of the brake boos ter and the
power steering is not gua ranteed. You
m ust use more force to tu rn or brake if
necessary. Beca use you cannot steer and
brake as you usually wou ld, this could
lead to crashes and ser ious injuries.
- To reduce the risk of injuries, make sure
that the Start-Stop-System is turned off
when working in the eng ine compart­
ment

Additional information
The engine will switch off in the P, 0/5 and N
positions as well as in manual mode. In the P
position, the engine will also remain off if you
take your foot off the brake pedal. The engine
starts again when you select another selector
lever position and take your foot off the brake
pedal.
If you select the R position during a Stop phase, the eng ine will start aga in .
Shift from 0/5 to P qu ickly to prevent the en­
g ine from starting unintentionally when shift­
ing through R.
You can determine for yourself if the engine
will stop or not by reduc ing or increasing the
amount of force you use to press the brake
pedal. For example, if you only lightly press
on the brake pedal in stop-and and-go traffic
or when tu rning, the eng ine will not switch off
when the vehicle is stationary. As soon as you
press the brake down harder, the engine will
switch off.

-Press the brake pedal during a stop
phase to keep the vehicle from rolling.
- When you stop and the start-stop-sys­
tem turns the engine off, the ignition re­
mains on. Make sure that the ignition is
switched off before exiting the vehicle.
- The ignition will turn off if you press the
!START ENGINE STOPI * button during a
stop phase.
- The image in the display is slightly differ ­
ent in some models.
General information
Applies to vehicles: with Start-Stop-System
The standard Start-Stop-mode can be cancel­
led for different system-related reasons.

Engine will not switch off
Before each stop phase, the system checks if
certain conditions have been met. For exam­
ple , the eng ine will
not be switched off in the
following sit uations:
- The engine has not reached the minimum
required temperature for Start-Stop -mode.
- The interior temperature selected by the A/C
system has not been reached.
- The outside temperature is extremely high/
low.
- The windsh ield is being defrosted
~page 81.
-The parking system* is switched on .
- The battery charge level is too low .
- The steering wheel is sharply turned or
there is a steering movement.

- After engaging the reverse gear.

Engine automatically restarts
The stop phase is interrupted in the following
situations, for example . The engine restarts
without any act ion by the driver .
- The interior temperature varies from the
temperature selected in the A/C system.
- The windshield is beeing defrosted

-The brake pedal is pressed several times in a
row.
- The battery charge level becomes too low.
- High power consumption .
@ Tips
If you shift into the 0/5 or N positions af­
ter shifting into reverse, the vehicle must
be driven faster than 6 mph (10 km/h) in
order for the engine to switch off again.
Switching the Start-Stop-System on/off
manually
Applies to vehicles: with Sta rt-Stop-System
If you do not wish to use the system, you can
switch it off manually .

There is a malfunction in the Start-Stop-Sys­
tem. Drive the vehicle to an authorized repair
facility for servicing as soon as possible to cor­
rect the malfunction.
Transmission: Car may roll! Shift to park!
This message appears if the selector lever is
not in the P position when the driver's door is
opened. You will a lso hear a warning tone.
Shift the selector lever to the P position . Oth­
erw ise, the vehicle could roll.
Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warning system warns if the driver
exceeds a previously stored maximum speed.
A warning tone will sound as soon as the vehi­ cle speed exceeds the set speed by about
3 mph (3 km/h) . At the same time, a warning

(30 km/h to 240 km/h). Settings can each be
adjusted in intervals of
5 mph (10 km/h).
Cruise control
Switching on
The cruise control system makes it possible to
drive at a constant speed starting at 20 mph
(30 km/h) .

The speed is kept constant by modifying en­
gine power or through an active brake inter­
vention.
A WARNING
- Always pay attention to the traffic around you when the cruise control is in
operation . You are always responsible for

your speed and the distance between
your vehicle and other vehicles.
- For reasons of safety, cruise control
should not be used in the city, in stop­
and-go traffic, on twisting roads and
when road conditions are poor (such as
ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
plan ing) -you could have an accident.
- Switch the cruise control off temporarily
when dr iv ing in turning lanes, highway
exits or in construction zones.
- Please note that unconsciously "resting"
your foot on the accelerator pedal causes
cru ise contro l not to brake. This is due to
the control system being overridden by
the driver's acceleration.
- Never use the cruise control when driving
off-road or on unpaved roads. The cruise
con tro l is intended for use only when the
vehicle is being operated on paved roads,
and is not suitable for use off-road or on
unpaved roads.
- If a brake system malfunction such as
overheating occurs when the cruise con ­
trol system is switched on, the braking
function in the system may be switched off. The other cruise control functions re­
main active as long as the indicator light

Changing speed

5 mph (10 km/h) for longer than 5 min utes,
the cruise cont ro l will be turned off tempo ra­
rily. The green symbol in the display turns
white, the saved speed is retained.
Pre-selecting speed
You con pre-select your desired speed while
the vehicle is not moving .

The combust ion eng ine tu rns on and inter­
rupts
the enhanced electric d rive mode when
the vehicle is accelerated. The gray indicator
light
l!I also turns on in the disp lay. The en­
hanced electric drive mode resumes automati ­
cally once acceleration stops.
The enhanced e lectric drive mode is
deactivat­
ed if at least one of the following conditions is
met :
- The ign ition is turned
off.
- Th e 1.:1"1 button is pressed again.
- The high voltage battery charge level is low .
- The vehicle speed is higher than approxi -
mately 62 mph (100 km/h).
- The S selector lever position or tiptronic
mode is selected .
- ESC offroad mode or hill descent assist is
switched on .

Start-Stop function
The combustion engine is operated on ly as
needed. Generally, the combustion engine
turns
off when the vehicle is stationary and
the high voltage battery powers the electrical
vehicle systems.
The purpose of automatica lly shutting the
combustion engine
off in hybrid drive mode is
to save fuel. All of the important veh icle sys­
tems, such as steering, brakes and the A/C
system, cont inue to remain active. In some
cases , systems may require the combustion
engine to cont inue running when the vehicle
is stationary. When dr iv ing in congested traf­
fic for long per iods of time, the comb ustion
engine w ill cycle on when the vehicle is sta­
tionary to keep the high voltage battery
charged.
Gliding
I f the gas pedal is not pressed and the D posi­
tion is selec ted, the combustion engine re-

mains turned off up to speeds of approxi ­
mately 99 mph (160 km/h). Driving conserva­
tive ly like this can reduce fuel consumption.
Energy recovery (recuperation)
When braking, the electric motor will act as a
generator creating e lectric energy that is then
stored in the high voltage battery. This also
occurs when the ve hicle is coasting or driving
downhi ll. The combustion engine is automati­
cally turned
off i n this case.
The vehicle is braked with the electric motor
by applying ear ly and even pressure to the
brakes and using short pedal movements

amount of the kinetic energy is recovered and
may be stored as electric energy in the high
voltage battery . During heavy braking, the
convent ional brakes are also act ivated

Automatic start of the combustion engine
Various operating conditions cause the com­
bust ion engine to start automat ically :
- The high voltage battery charge leve l is low.
- The temperature of the combustion engine
is low.
- The temperature of the catalytic converter is
low .
- The power output needed for the A/C sys-
t em is high.
- The vehicle speed is high.
- The vehicle acceleration is high.
- The inclin e is steep.
- High charge level for the high voltage bat-
tery when coasting. In th is case, the h igh
voltage battery cannot absorb any more en ­
ergy and so the electric motor cannot slow
down the veh icle. The combustion engine
tu rns on (engine brake). In this situation the
h igh voltage battery will show a Max charge.
