Locking v ehicle
• Move the selector leve r to the P position
(automatic transmiss ion), otherwise the ve
hicle cannot be locked.
• Touch th e sensor at the door hand le

Do not reach inside
the door handle .
T he vehicle can be locked and unlocked at any
door. It depends on the settings in the radio
or in the
MM!* whether the entire vehicle is
unlocked or one of the doors
c:> page 39 . The
master key must be within a range of about
5 feet (1.5 meters) from the appropr iate door
or the rear lid .
It makes no difference whether
the master key is in your jacket pocket or in
your brief case.
If you grip the door handle while locking, this
can adversely affect the lock ing funct ion.
It is not possible to re -open the door for a
brief period directly after closing it . Th is al
l ows you to ensure that the doors are properly
l ocked.

-
If your vehicle has been standing for an ex
tended period, please note the follow ing:
- The proximity sensors are deactivated af-
ter a few days to save power. You then
have to pull on the door handle once to
u nlock the veh icle and a second time to
open the veh icle.
- To prevent the battery from being dis
charged and to preserve your vehicle's
ability to start for as long as possible,
the energy management system gradu
ally switches off unnecessary conven
ience funct ions. It is possible t hat you
will not be able to unlock your vehicle us i ng these conven ience functions .

Operating locks with the mechanical key
In the event of o failure of the power locking
system, the driver's door can locked and un
locked with the mechanical key at the lock
cylinder.

l ocked.
- Front doors: you ca n un lock and ope n the
doors from the ins ide by pu lling on the door
hand le .
- Re ar doo rs: p ull the door handle

l ease the lock. Pull the hand le
again to open
the door .
- If you have a crash and the airbag is activa t
ed, the doors automatically un lock .
A WARNING
-The power locking sw itch works wit h the
ignition off and automatically locks the
entire vehicle when it is actuated .
- On a vehicle locked from the outside the
power locking system switch is inopera
t ive.
- Locked doors make it more diffic ult for
emergency workers to get into the vehi- cle, which puts lives at risk. Do not
leave
anyone behind in the vehicle, especially
children.

Emergency locking of the doors
Each door must be locked separa tely if the
power locking system fails .

all the way to the r ight (right door) or left
(left door).
Once the door has been closed, it can no lon
ger be opened from the outs ide. The door can
be opened from the inside by pulling the door
hand le.
If the child safety lock in a rear door is
activated, you must f irst pu ll the door handle
on the inside. Then you can open the door
from the outside .

A WARNING
-After closing the rear lid, always pull up
on it to make sure that it is properly
closed. Otherwise it could open suddenly
when the vehicle is moving .
- To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas
from being drawn into the vehicle, al
ways keep the rear lid closed while driv
ing . Never transport objects larger than
those which fit completely into the lug-

gage area, because then the rear lid can
not be fully closed.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended es
pecia lly with the rear lid left open. A
child could crawl into the car through the luggage compartment and pull the lid
shut, becoming trapped and unable to
get out. To reduce the risk of personal in
jury, never let children play in or around
your vehicle. Always keep the rear lid as
well as the vehicle doors closed when not
in use.
- Always ensure that no one is within
range of the rear lid when it is moving, in
particular close to the hinges -fingers or
hands can be pinched.
@ Tips
When the vehicle is locked, the luggage
compartment lid can be unlocked sepa
rately by pressing the button
c::> on the
master key . When the luggage compart
ment lid is closed again, it locks automati
ca lly .

Setting the luggage compartment lid
open position
.,. Bring the luggage compartment lid into the
desired open position. The position can be
stored at only one specific height.
.,. Press and hold the

least four seconds until the lights blink to
store the desired open position. .,.
Push the luggage compartment lid by hand
against the resistance if you want to set a
higher open posit ion .

the new open position .
Opening will be stopped immediately when:
- You press the
c::5 button on the remote key
for at least of one second, or
- press the unlock button
c::5 in the dr iver
door, or
- press the lock button the in the luggage
compartment lid, or
- push the handle in the luggage compart
ment lid, or
- when something blocks the rear lid or
makes it d ifficul t for the lid to move.
By pressing one of the button
c::5 repeatedly ,
you can stop or continue the opening process .
The pressing the lock button or the handle re·
peatedly, you can open/stop the lid ¢

Opening will be stopped immediately when:
- press the lock button the in the luggage
compartment lid, or
- push the handle in the luggage compart·
ment lid, or
- when something blocks the rear lid or
makes it difficult for the lid to move .
Th e pressing the lock button or the handle re ·
peatedly, you can open/stop the lid ¢

You can manua lly stop the automatic open
ing/closing of the luggage compartment lid.
In this situation, the lid can be manually
opened. Press down on the lid and the auto
matic closing will resume once again.
A WARNING
-- Never close the rear lid inattentively or
without checking first . Al though the
clos ing force of the rear lid is limited,
you can still seriously injure yourself or
others .

-Always ensure that no one is with in
range of the rear lid when it is mov ing, in
particular close to the h inges and the up
per and lower edges - fingers or hands
can be p inched.
- To help prevent po isonous exhaust gas
from being drawn into the vehicle, al
ways keep the rear lid closed while dr iv
ing. Never transport objects larger than
those which fit comp letely into the lug
gage are a, because then the rear lid can
not be fully closed.
- Never leave you r vehicle unattended es

luggage compartment and pull the lid

- If there is a luggage rack or bicycle rack mounted on the rear lid, it may not be
able to open completely or an opened
rear lid may close by itself because of the
added weight . So t he open rear lid must
be s upported or the weight must be re
moved from the luggage rack first .
(1) Tips
-As soon as the electrical connection to
the trailer socket is completed on
vehicles with a factory installed tow ing
hitch, or a trailer hitch that was installed
l ater according to factory spec ifications,
the automatic rear lid function can only be operated via the handle in the rear lid.
- If the vehicle battery charge drops below
a certain level, you can still open or close
the rear lid manually, however, you will
need to apply more force to close it .
- If the rear lid on a locked vehicle is un
locked with the m iddle button
c::; on the
remote key, the rear lid is automatically
l ocked again immediately after clos ing .
This is in dicated by the tu rn signals
bl inking .

- The following applies to vehicles equip
ped with the Convenience key* feature: if
the remote control key is left in the lug
gage compartment, luggage compart
ment w ill automatically unlock itself af
ter you lock the vehicle . Th is prevents
you from unintentionally lock ing you r
key in the luggage compartment.
Emergency unlocking

compartment lid
The luggage compartment lid can be released
in an emergency from the inside .

Child safety locks
When the safety button® Q fig. 40 is p ress
ed, the@symbol in the button lights up. The
power window switches in the rear doors are
switched off.
A WARNING
-
-When you leave your vehicle -even if on-
ly br iefly -always remove the ignition
key . T his app lies pa rticularly when chil
dren remain i n the vehicle . Othe rwis e the
children could start the eng ine or ope r
a te electrical eq uipment (e.g. power win
dows) . The power w indows are func tion
al un til the dr iver's door or passenge r's
door has been opened .
- Pay close attention when closing the win
dows to p revent pinching of hands or
lim bs.
- When locking the vehicle from outside,
the vehicle must be unoccupied since the
windows can no longer be opened in an
emergency.

After the ignition has been switched off,
the windows can still be opened or closed
for about 10 minutes. The power windows are not switched
off until the dr iver's door
or passenger's door has been opened.
Convenience opening/closing
The windows and the Panoramic sliding sun
roof* can be opened and closed with the me
chanical key or the emergency key.

Correcting window regulator
malfunction
After disconnecting the vehicle battery, the
one-touch up and down feature must be acti
vated again.
• Pull and ho ld the power window sw itch un
til the w indow is comp lete ly closed.
• Release the sw itch.
• Pull the switch again for one second. The
automatic closing/opening is now reactivat
ed.

Fog lights
The s ide marker lig hts or low beams must be
switched on . When the fog lights a re switched
on, the green check light at the edge of the
sw itch comes on.
If automatic driving light control AUTO is act i
vated, the low beams are switched on when
the fog lights are tur ned on .
Rear fog lights

When the rear fog lights a re turned on, the
yellow check ligh t a t the edge of the switch
comes on.

With the door contact switch turned on, the
interior lights turn on as soon as you unlock
the vehicle or open the doors. The lighting is
also turned on when the ignition key is re
moved. The lights go out about 30 seconds af
ter the doors are closed. When the vehicle is locked or when the ignition is turned on, the
interior lights are turned off.
When a doo r is open, the interior lights are
tu rned off after about 10 minutes to prevent
draining of the battery .
The brightness of the lights is controlled au
tomat ica lly by a d immer when they are
swi tched on and off.
Rear interior lights
There are reading lights in the rear for the
passengers .

and the location of the reading lights may be

Seat memory
Memory for driver's seat
Applies to vehicles: with seat memory
The seat adjustment settings for two drivers
can be stored using the memory buttons in
the driver's door.

In addition to the setting for the driver's seat ,
the exterior rear view mirror setting can be
stored and recalled through seat memory if
the vehicle is properly equipped.
Storing and recalling settings
With the help of the memory buttons 1 and 2
c::> fig. 62 the settings for two different dr ivers
can be stored and recalled
c::> page 63.
The current settings are also automatically as
signed to the remote control key being used
when the vehicle is locked . When the vehicle
is unlocked, the settings assigned to the re
mote contro l key being used are automatically
recalled.
Turning seat memory on and off
If the IOFF I switch is depressed, the seat
memory is inope rative. When the Memory
function is off , the LED in the button lights up.
A ll the stored settings are retained. We rec
ommend using the
I OFF I switch and deactivat
ing the seat memory if the vehicle is only go
ing to be used
temporarily by a driver whose
settings are not going to be stored.

When the vehicle is locked , the current set
tings are stored and assigned to the remote
control key. But the settings stored on
memo
ry buttons 1 to 2 are not deleted. They can be
recalled at any time . When the vehicle is
un
locked ,
the settings assigned to the remote
control key are restored .
If your vehicle is driven by other persons using
your remote control key, you should save you r
individual seat position on one of the memory
buttons . You can recall your settings again
s imply and conveniently by pressing the corre
sponding memory button . When the vehicle is
locked, these sett ings are automatically re-as
signed to the remote control key and stored.
A WARNING
- For safety reasons , the seat setting can
only be recalled when the vehicle is sta
tionary -otherwise yo u risk having an ac
cident.
- In an emergency the recall p rocedure can
be cancelled by pressing the
IO FF I switch
or by tapping of the memory buttons .
