The vehicle tools and vehicle jack* are stored
in the luggage compartment under the floor
cover.

The on board tool kit includes:
- Hook for removing wheel covers*
- Plastic hook to remove wheel bolt covers*
- Al ignment p in for changing wheels
- Wheel bolt wrench
- Folding chocks
- Screwdriver with reversible blade
- Socket (removable Torx socket)*
- 10 x 13 open ended wrench (for disconnect-
ing the battery cables)
- Towing eye
Before storing the jack*, make sure it is
wound back down as far as it will go.
A WARNING
Imprope r use of the vehicle jack* can
cause serious personal injuries.
- Never use the j ack* supplied with your
Audi on another vehicle, particularly on a heavier one . The jack* is only suitable for
use on the vehicle it came with .

-Using a bumper jack to ra ise the vehicle
will damage the bumper system. The
jack may slip, causing injury.
- Never support your vehicle on cinder
blocks, br icks or other objects. These
may not be able to support the load and
could cause injury when they fa il.
- Never start or run the engine while the
veh icle is supported by the jack* .
- If you must work under the vehicle, al­
ways use safety stands specifically de­ signed for th is purpose .
- Never use the hexagonal socket in the
handle of the screwdriver to loosen or
tighten the wheel bolts .
- Always make sure the inflatable spare
tire* and even a flat tire are secured in
place and not loose, otherwise they
could fly forward, causi ng personal injury
to passengers in the vehicle in an acci­
dent or sudden maneuver.

Folding chocks
The folding chocks are part of the on board
tool kit.

Special ca re is requ ired if you are repairin g
t he t ire o n a steep incline.
@ Tips
- Do not operate the compressor for more
than 12 minutes continuously, otherwise i t can overheat. Once the compressor has
cooled, you can continue to use it.
- If sealant has spi lled out, let it dry and
then you can remove it by pee ling it away
like a fo il.
- Remember to obtain a new bottle of
sealant from your authorized Audi dealer
after repairing a tire. After this, the func­
tionality of the tire repair set is restored.
- Obey all laws.
Changing a wheel
Before changing a wheel
Observe the following precautions for your
own and your passenger's safety when chang­
ing a wheel .

A WARNING
You or your passengers cou ld be injured
while changing a whee l if yo u do not fol­
low these safety precautions:
-
- If you have a flat tire, move a safe d is­
tance off the road. Turn off the engine,
turn the emergency flashers on and use
other warning devices to a lert other mo­
torists.
- Make sure that passengers wait in a safe
place away from the vehicle and well
away from the road and traffic.
- To help prevent the vehicle from moving
suddenly a nd possib ly slipping off the
jack*, always fully set the pa rking brake
a nd b lock the wheel d iagonally opposite
t he wheel be ing c hanged w it h t he fold­
ing chocks or other objec ts. When one
front wheel is lifted off the ground, plac ­
ing the Automatic Transmission in P
(Park) will
not prevent the vehicle from
mov ing.
- Before you change a wheel, be sure t he
ground is level and firm. If necessary,
use a sturdy board under the jack*.
- Always store the vehicle tool kit, the
jack * and the replaced tire in the luggage
compartment¢

Changing a wheel
When you change a wheel, follow these­
quence described below step-by-step and in
exactly that order.
1. Remove the decorative wheel cover* . For

ing the vehicle.

If a wheel bo lt is very t ight, you may find i t
e asie r to loosen by ca refully push ing dow n

one foot only . As you do so, ho ld on to the ca
r to kee p your ba lance and take care no t
to s lip.
Raising the vehicle
The vehicle must be lifted with the jack * firs t
before the wheel can be removed.

When removing or installing the wheel,
the rim could hit the brake rotor and dam­
age the rotor. Work carefully and have a
second person help you.

Never use the hexagonal socket in the han­
dle of the screwdriver to loosen or tighten
the wheel bolts .
- Pull the reversible b lade from the screw­
driver before you use the hexagonal
socket in the handle to turn the whee l
bo lts.
- When mounting tires with

make sure the tread pat­
tern is pointed the right way

- The wheel bolts should be clean and easy
to turn . Check for d irt and corrosion on
the mat ing surfaces of both the whee l
and the hub. Remove all dirt from these
s ur faces before remo unt ing the wheel.
Tires with unidirectional tread design
Tires with unidirectional tread design must be
mounted with their tread pattern pointed in the right direction .
Using a sp are t ire w ith a tre ad pattern
intended for use in a specific direction
When using a spare t ire with a tread patter n
intended for use in a spec ific d irection , please
note the following :
- The direct ion of rotation is marked by an ar­
row on the side of the ti re .
- If the spare tire has to be installed in the in­
correct direct ion, use the spare tire only
temporarily s ince the tire will not be able to
achieve its optimum performance cha racter­
isti cs wit h regard to aquap lan ing, no ise and
wear .
- We recommend that you pay part icu la r at­
t ention to th is fact d uring wet wea ther and
t ha t you adjust you r speed to match road
conditions .
- Replace the fl at tir e with a new one and
have it insta lled on you r vehicle as soon as
possible to restore the handling advantages
of a u nidirectional tire .
Notes on wheel changing
Please read the information¢ page 259, New
tires and replacing tires and wheels
if you a re
going to use a spare tire which is different
from the ti res on your vehicle .
After you change a tire:
- Check the tire pre ssure on the spare imme­
diately after install ation.
- Have th e whe el bolt tight ening torqu e
c hecked with a torque wrench as soon a s
pos sible by your author ized Audi de aler or
a q ualified wo rkshop.
- With steel and alloy wheel r im s, the wheel
bolt s are cor re ctl y tightened at a torque of
105 ft lb (140 Nm).
- If you noti ce th at the wheel bolts are cor­
roded and diffi cult to turn while changing
a ti re , they should be repl aced before you
check the t ightening torque. .,..

To avoid serious personal injury and dam­
age to the vehicle, heed all warnings and
instructions of the jumper cable manufac­
turer. If in doubt, call for road serv ice.
- Jumper cables must be long enough so
that the vehicles do not touch.
- When connecting jumper cables, make
surethattheycannotgetca ughtinany
moving parts in the eng ine compart­
ment.
- Do not bend over the batteries -danger
of chemical burns!
- The battery cell locking screws must be
t ightened securely.
- Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, always read and heed all
WARNINGS
c:> page 226, Engine com­
partment .
Improper hook-up of jumper cables can ru­
in the generator.
- Always connect POSITIVE( +) to POS I­
TIVE(+), and NEGATIVE( -) to NEGATIVE
(-) ground post of the battery manager
control unit.
- Check that a ll screw plugs on the battery
cells are screwed in firmly . If not, tighten
plugs prior to connecting clamp on nega­
tive battery terminal.
- Please note that the procedure for con­
nect ing a jumper cable as described
above applies spec ifically to the case of
your vehicle being jump started. When
you are giving a jump start to anothe r ve­
hicle, do
not connect the negat ive (-) ca ­
ble to the negat ive (-) term inal on the
discharged bat tery ©

stead, securely connect the negative(-)
cable to e ithe r a solid metal component
that is firm ly bolted to the engine block
or to the engine block itse lf. If the bat­
tery that is being charged does not vent
to the outside, escaping battery gas

Emergency towing
with commercial tow
truck
General hints
Your Audi requires special handling for tow­
ing.
T he following information is to be used by
commercial tow truck operators who know
how to op erate their equipment safely.
- Nev er tow your Audi , towing will cau se
damage to the engine and tr an smi ssion .
- Ne ver wrap th e safety chain s or winch ca­
ble s around the brak e lines.
- To pre vent unne ce ss ary damage, your Audi
mus t be tr an sp o rt ed with a flat bed tru ck.
- To load th e vehi cle on to th e flat b ed, use
the towing l oop found in the ve hicle to ols
an d att ach to th e front or r ea r a ncho rage
c:>page 287 and Qpage 287.

A vehicle being towed is not safe for pas­
sengers. Never allow anyone to ride in a
vehicle being towed, for any reason.

The safety compliance sticker
is you r assurance that your new vehicle com­
plies with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle
Safety Standards which were in effect at the
t ime the vehicle was manufactured . You can
find this sticker on the left door jamb .
It
shows the month and year of production and
the vehicle ident ification number of your vehi ­
cle (perforation) as well as the Gross Vehicle
Weight Rating (GVWR) and the Gross Axle
Weight Rating (GAWR) .
The high voltage warning label
is located on the lock carrier.
The spark ignition system complies with
the Canadian standard ICES-002.
Weights
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), and
the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) for
front and rear are listed on a sticker on the
left door jamb.
The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating includes the
weight of the basic vehicle plus fu ll fuel tank,
oi l and coolant, plus maximum load , which in­
cludes passenger weight (150 lbs/68 kg per

steadi ly reduced the scope of maintenance
and repairs which can be carried out by vehicle
owners.
Also, s afety an d e nvir onm ent al con­
cerns place very strict limits on the nature of
repairs and adjustments to engine and trans ­
miss ion pa rts which an owner can perform .
Maintenance, adjustments and repa irs usua lly
require special tools, testing devices and oth­
er equipment avai lab le to specially trained
workshop personnel in order to assure proper
performance, reliab ility and safety of the vehi­
cle and its many systems .
Improper ma intenance, adjustments and re ­
pa irs can impair the operation and reliab ility
of your vehicle and even void your vehicle war­ ranty. Therefo re , proof of servic ing in accord­
ance w it h the ma intenance sched ule may be a
condition for upholding a possible warranty
claim made within the warran ty period.
Above all, operational safety can be adve rsely
affected, creating unnecessary risks for you
and your passengers.
If in doubt about any serv icing, have it done
by your author ized Audi dealer or any other
p roperly equipped and qualified workshop .
We strong ly urge you to give your authorized
Audi dealer the opportunity to perform all
schedu led maintenance and necessary repairs .

and tra ined spec ialists to keep your vehicle
running properly .

The fo llowing pages describe a limited num­
ber of procedures which can be performed on
you r vehicle with ordinary too ls, shou ld the
need arise and trained personnel be unavaila­
ble. Before performing any of these proce­
dures, always thoroughly read all of the app li­
cable text and ca refully follow the instruc­
tions given. Always rigorously obse rve the
WARNINGS p rovided .

A WARNING
--Serious personal in jury may occur as a re-
sult of improperly performed mainte­
nance, adjustments or repa irs.
- Always be extremely careful when work­
ing on the vehicle. Always follow com­
monly accepted safety pract ices and gen­
eral common sense. Never r isk personal
in jur y.
- Do not attempt any of the maintenance,
checks or repairs descr ibed on the fol­
lowing pages if you are not fu lly fam iliar
with these or other procedures with re­
spect to the vehi cle, or are uncerta in how
to proceed .
- Do not do any work withou t the proper
too ls and equipment . Have the necessary
work done by your authorized A udi deal ­
er or anothe r properly equipped and
qualified workshop.
- The engine compar tment o f any motor
vehicle is a potentially hazardous area. Never reach into the area around or
touch the rad iator fan. It is temperature
control led and can sw itch on suddenly -
even when the engine is off and the igni­
tion key has been removed. The rad iator
fan switches on automatically when the coo lant reaches a certain tempera ture
and will cont inue to run until the coo lant
temperature drops .
- Always remove the ign ition key befo re
anyone gets under the veh icle.
- Always support your veh icle with safety
s tands if it is necessary to work under­
neath the vehicle. The jack* s upplied
with the vehicle is not adequate for this purpose and could co llapse causing seri­
ous personal injury .
- If you must work unde rneath the vehicle
with the wheels on the ground, a lways
make sure the vehicle is on leve l ground,
that the wheels are always securely blocked and that the engine cannot be
started.
