T he illum ina tion fo r the instr ument clus ter
lights up whenever yo u sw itch on the ig nit io n
w it h t he
vehicle headlight s off. As the day ­
light fades, the instr ument clus ter ill umi na ­
tion likew ise dims a utomatica lly and will go
out comp lete ly when the outs ide light is very
low. This feature is meant to remind you to
sw itch on the head lights when outside light
condi tions become poor .

Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coolant gauge ¢ page 10, fig. 3 CD
on ly works when t he ignition is on. To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the follow­
ing important points :
Engine cold
If the needle is at or close to the bottom o f the
gauge, the engine has not yet reached its operat­
i ng temperature. Avo id high engine speeds,
heavy engine loads, and heavy thrott le applica­
tions .
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operating tem­
perature, the needle will move to the middle of
the ga uge and rema in there. I f the engine is
working hard at hig h outs ide temperatures, t he
needle may move higher on the gauge. This is not
a cause for concern as long as the. warning
li ght i n the inst ru m en t cluste r display does not il-
l u m inat e. .,,.

Warning light in th e instrument clus ter
di splay
If the . warning light in the instrument cluster
display flashes , this can mean one of two th ings:
either the coolant
t emperature is too high, or the
coolan t
level is too low 9 page 29.
If the needle is well in the upper area of the
gauge, the coo lant temperature is too high.

If the warning light comes on again after
driving a short distance , contact an authorized
Aud i dealer or other q ualified workshop .

-Always observe the warni ng i n 9 page 221,
before opening the hood and chec king the
engine coolan t level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see o r
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartmen t. You
cou ld burn yourself . Let the engine cool off
first so that you cannot hear o r see any
steam or engine coo lant.
CD Note
- M ount ing additional lights or accesso ries in
front of the air inlets red uces the cooling ef ­
fect of the radiator . At high outside temper ­
atures or high engine load, the eng ine could
overheat .
- The front spoiler has been designed to prop­
erly distribute the cooling air when the veh i­
cle is moving . If the spoiler is damaged, this
could reduce the cooling effect and the en­
gine could then overheat. Ask your author ­
i zed Audi dealer for assistance .
Tachometer (engine rev counter )
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM (revo ­
lutions per minutes) .
If engine RPM drops below 1,500 , you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area at
~ the end of the scale indicates max imum perm is -co
~ sible eng ine RPM after the break- in period . Be-

Starting the Auto-Check sequence
T he Auto-Chec k system ~ page 2 7 constantly
monitors ce rtain ind iv idual f unct ions and compo­
nents of the vehicle when the ignition is turned
on and when the vehicle is moving .
With the ignition turned on, you can start the "Auto-Check seq uence" by pressing the
!S ET ! bu t­
ton. You can perform an Auto-Check sequence
when the vehicle is stationary and the ign ition is
turned on or when the vehicle is moving slower
than 3 mph (5 km/h). ..,.

A WARNING
- Failure to heed warning lights and other im­
portant vehicle information may result in
serious personal injury or vehicle damage.
- Whenever stalled or stopped for repair,
move the vehicle a safe distance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on the emer­
gency flasher

- The engine compartment of any motor vehi­
cle is a potentially hazardous area. Before
you check anything in the engine compart­
ment, stop the engine and let it cool down.

EPC Electronic power control
App lies to vehicles: with gaso line engine
This warning/indicator light monitors the elec­
tronic power control .
The Ga warning/indicator light (Electronic Power
Control) illuminates when you turn on the igni­
tion as a function check.
@ Tips
If this warning/indicator light illuminates
while you are driving, then there is a malfunc-

tion in the engine electronics. Have the mal­
function corrected as soon as possible by your
authorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop.
W Glow plug system
Applies to vehicles: wit h diese l eng ine
The control light illuminates when the glow plug
system is active.
If the II indicator light illuminates, the glow
plug system is active. You should start the engine
immediately after the indicator light switches off.
The indicator light only illuminates for approxi­ mately 1 second if the engine is warm or if the
outside temperature is above 46 QF (8 Q().
(D Tips
-If the glow plug indicator light illuminates
while driving, there is an engine control
malfunction. The engine should be checked
immediately.
- If the indicator light does not illuminate at
all when switching the ignition on, there
may be a malfunction in the glow plug sys­
tem. The engine should be checked.
;;.ll/4 Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC)
If the Bl indicator light blinks while driving, the
ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) is actively regu­
lating.
If the
Bl indicator light turns on, the system has
switched the ESC off. In this case, you can switch
the ignition off and then on to switch the ESC on
again. The indicator light turns off when the sys­
tem is functioning fully.
If the. indicator light turns on, ESC was re­
stricted using the
!.P-O FF I button c> page 191.
Stabilization control (ESC/ABS): Fault! See
owner's manual
If the Bl indicator light and the ABS indicator
light
LtB (USA models) 1iJ (Canada models)
turn on and the message appears, the ABS or
electronic differential lock is malfunctioning . This
also causes the ESC to malfunction. The brakes ..,.

@ Tips
For vehicles with a factory installed towing
hitch or a trailer hitch that was installed later
according to factory specifications, the trailer
turn signal assembly is actuated.
~ Safety belts
This warning/indicator light reminds you to put
on your safety belt.
The . warning/indicator light illuminates when
the ignition is switched on to remind the driver
and (on USA models only) any front passenger to
put on the safety belt. Additionally, an audible
warning tone will also sound .

o Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is part of
the On -Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system . The
symbol ¢4 lights up when the ignition is turned
on and w ill turn off after the engine has started
and has settled at a constant idle speed. This in­
dicates that the MIL is working properly .
The warning light illuminates when there is a
malfunction in the engine electronic system.
Contact your authorized Audi dealer and have the
mal funct ion corrected.
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate (only vehicles
with gasoline engine)

The . warning/ind icator light illuminates when
the high beams are on or when you use the head­
light flasher. For more info rmation about using

CRUISE/•(-) Cruise control
The (~jll)~i* (USA models) ;Bl (Canada models)
warning/ind icator light illuminates when the
cruise control is activated.
ABS/{ @) Anti-lock brake system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The~ (USA models) !(iJ (Canada mode ls)
warning/indicator light will come on for a few
seconds when the ignition is switched on. The
light will go out after an automatic check se­
quence is comp leted .
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/indicator light does not illum inate
when you sw itch on the ignit ion.
- The warning/indicator light does not go out af­
ter a few seconds.
- The warning/ indicator light illum inates while
driving .
The brake system will still respond even with·
out the assistance of the ABS system. See your
authorized Audi dealer as soon as possible to re­
store full braking performance.

The ABS warning light and the brake warning
light come on together . The ABS will not work
and you will notice a change in braking re­
sponse and performance.
Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light¢ page 18 and the
ABS warning illum inate
together there may be a
malfunction in the ABS, and there may also be a
malfunction in the brake system itself~ ,&..

malfunction in the brake sys ­
tem

Malfunction in th e electronic diffe rential
lock (EDL )
The EDL works together with the ABS . The ABS
warning light wi ll come on if there is a malfunc­
t ion in the EDL system
q page 191 . See your au­
t hor ized Audi dealer as soon as possible.
A WARNING
- If the Lil3 (USA models) ;[IJ (Canada mod ­
els) warning light does not go out , or if it
comes on while d riving, the ABS system is
not working properly. The vehicle can the n
be stopped only with the standard brakes
(without ABS) . You wi ll not have the protec­
tion ABS p rovides . Contact your authorized
Audi dealer as soon as possible .
- If the
1111 (USA models)/ . (Canada mod­
els) brake system indicator light t urns on to ­
gether wit h the ABS and ESC indicator
lights , the ABS/ESC regulating function may
have failed. Funct ions that stab ilize the ve­
hicle are no longer availab le. This could
cause the vehicle to swerve and increase the
risk of sliding . Driv e ca refully to the nea rest
autho rized Aud i dealer o r othe r qualified
wor kshop and have the malfunction correc t­
ed.
:fil .lC® ) Electromechanical parking brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the elec­
trome chanical parking brake.
W ith the parking brake applied and the ign it ion
turned on, the. (USA models)/ . (Cana-
da models) warning/indicator light illuminates.
Afte r the ig nitio n has been turned off , the warn­
ing/indicator light continues to illum inate fo r
about 30 seconds . If the parking brake is applied
w ith the ignition t urned off, the warning/indica­
tor light illuminates for abo ut 30 seconds.
The warning/indicator ligh t will go o ut when t he
parking brake is re leased .
-
If the war ning/ indicato r light flashes cont inuous­
ly
after applying the p ark ing brake , brak ing fo rce
is no t sufficient to prevent the vehicle from roll­
ing unintentiona lly . Please note the following:

- I f the slope of the ground is too steep to pa rk
the vehicle, the add itiona l driv e message ap ­
pears
Caution: Vehicle parked too steep.
- In the event of a pa rking brake malfunction ,
the yellow
Ill symbol appears in the instru­
ment cluster display and the driver message
Pa rk ing brake malfunction! is displayed. Have
the malfu nction repaired as soon as possible by
an authorized A udi dealer or any other qualified
workshop .
BRAKE/C(D) Brake system
The warning/indicator light flashes if brake fluid
level is low, if there is an ABS system malfunc­
tion or a parking brake malfunction .
The 1111 (USA models)/ . (Canada models)
l ight illum inates when the ignition is turned on .
It goes out after the engine has been started.
This ind icates that the brake warn ing light is
fun ct io ni ng properly.
If th e brake warning light does not light up
when the engine is cranking, there may be a
malfunction in the electrical system. In this
case, conta ct an authorized Audi dealer .
If the brake system warning/indicator light flash­
es, there is a brake system malfunction . By press­
i ng the
IS ET I button , you can b ring up a dr iver
message wh ich explains the malfunction in mo re
d etail
q page 28.
If the ABS fails, the ABS wa rn ing/ indicator lig ht

Service interval display
The service interval display reminds you when
your next service is due.

The sched ule for the next oil change or inspec­
tion is calculated automatically and displayed ac­ cording ly . The display works in two stages :
Service remind er
30 days before the next service is due, a serv ice
reminder appea rs in the display when you tu rn on
the ignition

Afte r about 5 seconds the d isplay switches back
to normal. The dis tance and time rema ining are
updated each time the ignition is turned on unti l
the date due for serv ice is reached .
Service due
When the due date for service is reached, the
message
Ser vice d ue! appears in the instrument
cluste r immediately after you tu rn on the igni­
tion. Additionally, a warning tone so unds. After
about 5 seconds the disp lay switches back to nor ­
mal.
Calling up the service schedule s
If or when an oil change o r inspection is due, ca n

Your authorized Audi dealer wi ll reset the corre­
sponding service schedu le after performing the

appropriate service on your vehicle . You also have
the possibility to reset the oil change schedule af­
ter having performed an oi l change according to
Audi spec ifications. Select

- Only reset the oil change display when you
have completed an oil change .
-If you disconnect the battery terminals, no
calculations can be made for the serv ice in­
terval disp lay dur ing th is time and no serv­
ice remi nder w ill appea r. Remember that
observing the proper service intervals is v i­
tally important to extend ing the life of yo ur
vehicle, particularly the engine, and main ­
ta ining its value . Do not exceed the time in­
terval for the next service, even if the veh i­
cle mileage is low.

The information in the Service Reminder re­ mains stored even when the vehicle battery is
disconnected.
Trip computer
Introduction
The trip computer gives you information on cur­
rent and average fuel mileage , average speed,
fuel range and driving time .

Driver information system
On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ¢• in the
instrument cluster
c:::> page 14, fig. 8 is part of the
On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
The warning/indicator light i lluminates when the
ignition is switched on and goes out after the en­
gine starts and the idle has stabilized. This indi­
cates that the MIL is working properly.
If the light does not go out after the engine is
started, or illuminates while you are driving, a
malfunction may exist in the engine system. If
the light illuminates, the catalytic converter
could be damaged.
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoiding
sustained high speeds and/or rapid acce lerations)
and have the condition corrected. Contact your
authorized Audi dealer.
I f the light illuminates, the electronic speed lim­
iter may also be malfunctioning. For more infor­
mation
c::> page 26, Electronic speed limiter.

On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the components
of yo ur emission control system. Each monitored
component in your engine system has been as­
signed a code . In case of a malfunction, the com­
ponent will be identified and the fault stored as a
code in the control module memory.

The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a
l eak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery system.
If the light illuminates after a refueling, stop the
vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is prop­
erly closed (only vehicles with gasoline engine)
c::> page 216.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor ­
ed data can only be displayed using specia l diag­
nostic equipment (generic scan tool for OBD).
In order to connect the specia l diagnostic equip­
ment, push the plug into the Data Link Connector
(DLC) . The DLC is located to the right of the hood
release

Your authorized Audi dealer or qualified work­ shop can interpret the code and perform the nec­
essary repair .
A WARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for per­
sonal use. Incorrect usage can cause malfunc­
tions, which can increase the r isk of a coll i­
sion!
Electronic speed limiter
Your vehicle may be factory equ ipped with tires
that are rated for a maximum speed of 130 mph
(210 km/h) . Th is is less than the max imum speed
of your veh icle. To reduce the risk of sudden tire
failure and loss of control if the vehicle is ope rat­
ed at excessive speeds, your vehicle also has an
electronic speed limiter . The electronic speed
limiter prevents your vehicle from going faster
than the tire speed rating. For more information
c::> page 242.
If the engine contro l unit receives faulty vehicle
road speed signals, the Malfunction Indicator
Lamp (MIL) ¢•will illuminate. If this occurs,
contact the nearest authorized Audi dealer for as­
sistance.
SQS
Your vehicle's top speed is electronically limited
to 155 mph (250 km/h).
If the engine contro l unit receives faulty vehicle
road speed s ignals, the Malfunction Ind icator ..,_

Always observe the posted speed limits and adjust your speed to suit prevailing road, traf­
fic and weather cond it ions . Never drive your
vehicle faster than the maximum speed rating
of the tires installed .
Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Auto-Check control monitors the function of
certain vehicle features and components .
It sim­
ply makes sure these features and components
are working properly . The Auto-Check control
works as long as the ignition is on, as well as
whenever the veh icle is driven .
-
If a component is malfunctioning or if the need
for an urgent repair has been detected, this will appear in the instrument cluster display . You w ill
also hear an audible warning tone . The displays
are color coded in either red or ye llow depending
on their level of prior ity.
A red symbol means
Danger , a yellow symbol in ­
dicates
Warning . In certain situations, informa­
tion message for the dr iver appear in addition to
the red and yellow symbols.
Note about automatic transmission
The Auto-Check Control will automat ically per­
form a test each time you switch o n the ignition .
With the selector lever in P or N, the following
message appears in the display :
When stationary apply brake pedal while select­
ing gear
When you select a different gear (for example: R,
D, etc.), the message will disappear and the Au­
to -Check function is d isplayed.
If there is a malfunction, then the malfunction
message will appear about 15 seconds after you
start the vehicle. At the same time you will hear a
warning tone.
Dri ver information system
Dr iver information messages
Driver information messages are shown in the in­
strument cluster display in addition to symbols .

For example, if the transmission selector lever is
not in the P position when the engine is turned
off, the following message appears :
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away. Doors
do not lock if lever is not in P .
The ign ition key can only be removed w ith these­
lector in this position . This and other messages
are bro ught up if a function cannot be carried
out .
Driver messages and red symbols
If a red symbol appears in the display, a driver
message is also displayed automatically.
For example, the symbol for a problem w ith en­
gine oil pressure . appears in the display . The
fo llow ing message appears:
Turn off engine! O il pressure too low
T he driver message in the display goes out after
about S seconds . The dr iver message can be dis­
played again by briefly press ing the
ISETI button

Driver messages and yellow symbols
If a yellow symbol appears in the display, a driver
message is also displayed automatically .
For example, the symbol
Ill appears in the dis­
play, indicat ing low windshie ld washer fluid level.
The following message also appears :
Please refill washer fluid ..,_
