ElectronicStabilizationControl(ESC)supports
driversafety.Itreducestheriskofslippingand
improvesdrivingstability.ESCdetectscriticalsit-
uations,suchasifthevehicleisoversteeringor
understeering,orifthewheelsare spinning.The
brakesareappliedortheenginetorqueisre-
ducedinordertostabilizethevehicle.Whenthe
ESCengages,theBindicatorlightblinksinthe
instrumentcluster.
ThefollowingsystemsareintegratedintheESC:
Anti-lockbrakingsystem(ABS)
ABSpreventsthewheelsfromlockingwhenbrak-
ing.Thevehiclecanstillbesteeredevenduring
hardbraking.Applysteadypressuretothebrake
pedal.Donotpumpthepedal.Apulsinginthe
brakepedalindicatesthatthesystemisacting to
stabilizethevehicle.
Brakeassistsystem
Thebrakeassistsystemcandecreasebrakingdis-
tance.Itincreasesbrakingpowerwhenthe driver
pressesthebrakepedalquicklyinemergencysit-
uations.Youmustpressandholdthebrakepedal
untilthedangeroussituationisover.Invehicles
withadaptivecruisecontrol*,thebrakeassist
systemismoresensitiveifthedistancedetected
tothevehicledrivingaheadistoosmall.
Anti-SlipRegulation(ASR)
ASRreducesdrivepowerwhenthedrivewheels
beginspinningandadaptsthepowertotheroad
conditions.Thismakesiteasiertostart,acceler-
ateanddriveuphills.
ElectronicDifferentialLock(EDL)
TheEDLappliesthe brakestowheelsthatare
slippingandtransfersthedrivepowertotheoth-
erwheels.Thisfunctionisnotavailableathigher
speeds.

Inextremecases,EDLautomaticallyswitchesoff
tokeepthebrakeonthebrakedwheelfromover-
heating.Thevehicleisstillfunctioningcorrectly.
EDLwillswitchonagainautomaticallywhencon-
ditionshavereturnedtonormal.
Powersteering
The ESCcanalsosupportvehiclestability
throughsteering.
Selectivewheeltorquecontrol
Selectivewheeltorquecontrolisusedwhendriv-
ingoncurves.Brakingistargetedtowardthe
wheelsontheinsideofthecurveasneeded.This
allowsmoreprecisedrivingincurves.
Automaticpost-collisionbrakingsystem
Theautomaticpost-collisionbrakingsystemcan
helptoreducetheriskofslidingandofaddition-
alcollisionsafteranaccident.Iftheairbagcon-
trolmoduledetectsacollision,thevehicleis
braked bytheESC.
Thevehicledoesnotbrakeautomaticallyifoneof
thefollowingoccurs:
—Thedriverpressestheacceleratorpedal
—TheESC,thebrakesystem,orthevehicleelec-
tricalsystemisnotfunctioning
ZAWARNING
— The ESCanditsintegratedsystemscannot
overcomethelimitsimposedbynatural
physicallaws.Thisisespeciallyimportanton
slipperyorwetroads.Ifthesystemsbegin
actingtostabilizeyourvehicle,youshould
immediatelyalteryourspeedtomatchthe
roadandtrafficconditions.Donotletthein-
creasedsafetyprovidedtemptyouintotak-
ingrisks.Thiscouldincreaseyourriskofa
collision.
—Pleasenotetheriskofacollisionincreases
whendrivingfast,especiallythroughcurves
andonslipperyorwetroads,andwhendriv-
ingtooclosetoobjectsahead.The ESC and
itsintegratedsystemscannotalwayspre-
ventcollisions-thereisstillariskofacci-
dents!

thesecontrolsystemsareinstalledandthis

suppliedroofracksystemontheroofrail,
theESCwillusesensorstoadaptitselfto

Peoplewhodonotusesafetybeltsarealsonot
attachedtotheirvehicle.Inafrontalcollision
theywillalsokeepmovingforwardatthespeed
theirvehiclewastravellingjustbeforethecrash.
Ofcourse,thelawsofphysicsdon'tjustapplyto
frontalcollisions,theydeterminewhathappens
inallkindsofaccidentsandcollisions.

themselvesfromflyingforwardandbeingin-

Neverrelyonairbagsaloneforprotection.Even
whentheydeploy,airbags provideonlyadditional
protection.Airbagsarenotsupposedtodeployin
allkindsofaccidents.AlthoughyourAudiis
equippedwithairbags,allvehicleoccupants,in-
cludingthedriver,mustwearsafetybeltscor-
rectlyinordertominimizetheriskofseverein-
juryordeathinacrash.
Remembertoo,thatairbagswilldeployonlyonce
andthatyoursafetybeltsarealwaystheretoof-
ferprotectioninthoseaccidentsinwhichairbags
arenotsupposedtodeployorwhentheyhaveal-
readydeployed.Unbeltedoccupantscanalsobe
thrownoutofthevehiclewhereevenmoresevere
orfatalinjuriescanoccur.
Itisalsoimportantfortherearpassengersto
wearsafetybeltscorrectly.Unbeltedpassengers
intherearseatsendangernotonlythemselves
butalsothedriverandotherpassengers

Peoplethinkit'spossibletousethehandsto

Safetybeltsattachpassengerstothecarandgive

gentlyor“softly”throughthe“give”inthesafety
belts,crushzonesandothersafetyfeaturesengi-
neeredintotoday'svehicles.By“absorbing”the
kineticenergyoveralongerperiodoftime,the
safetybeltsmaketheforcesonthebodymore
“tolerable”andlesslikelytocauseinjury.
Althoughtheseexamplesarebasedonafrontal
collision,safetybeltscanalsosubstantiallyre-
duce
theriskofinjuryinotherkindsofcrashes.
So,whetheryou'reonalongtripor justgoingto
thecornerstore,alwaysbuckleupandmakesure
othersdo,too.Accidentstatisticsshowthatvehi-
cleoccupantsproperlywearingsafetybeltshave
alowerriskofbeinginjuredandamuchbetter
chanceofsurvivinganaccident.Properlyusing
safetybeltsalsogreatlyincreasestheabilityof
thesupplementalairbagstodotheirjobinacol-
lision.Forthisreason,wearingasafetybeltisle-
gallyrequiredinmostcountriesincludingmuch
ofthe UnitedStatesandCanada.
AlthoughyourAudiisequippedwithairbags,you
stillhavetowearthesafetybeltsprovided.Front
airbags,forexample,areactivatedonlyinsome
frontalcollisions.Thefrontairbagsarenotacti-
vatedinallfrontalcollisions,insideandrearcol-
lisions,inrolloversorincaseswherethereisnot
enoughdecelerationthroughimpacttothefront
of
thevehicle.Thesamegoesfortheotherairbag
systemsinyourAudi.So,alwayswearyoursafety
beltandmakesureeverybodyinyourvehicleis
properlyrestrained!

vehicle,changingthestiffnessofthesuspension,
includingthesprings,suspensionstruts,shock
absorbersetc.canchangetheforcesthatare
measuredbytheairbagsensorsandsenttothe
electroniccontrolunit.Somesuspensionchanges
can,forexample,increasetheforcelevelsmeas-
uredbythesensorsandmaketheairbagsystem
deployincrashesinwhichitwouldnotdeployif
thechangeshadnotbeenmade.Otherkindsof
changesmayreducetheforcelevelsmeasuredby

mustnotusethevehiclesafetybeltswithouta
suitablechildrestraint.
Itisusuallybesttoput thesechildreninappro-
priateboosterseats.Besuretheboosterseat

Boosterseatsraisetheseatingpositionofthe
childandrepositionboththelapandshoulder
partsofthesafetybeltsothattheypassacross

portionofthesafetybeltbe fastened snuglyand
aslowaspossiblearoundthepelvis.Neverlet
thelapbeltportionofthesafetybeltpassover
thechild'sstomachorabdomen.
Inacrash,airbagsmustinflatewithinablinkof
aneyeandwithconsiderableforce.Inordertodo
itsjob,theairbagneedsroomtoinflatesothatit
willbetheretoprotecttheoccupantastheoccu-
pantmovesforwardintotheairbag.
Avehicleoccupantwhoisoutofpositionandtoo
closetotheairbaggetsinthewayofaninflating
airbag.Whenanoccupantistooclose,heorshe
willbestruckviolentlyandwillreceiveserious or
possibly
evenfatalinjury.
Inorderfortheairbagtoofferprotection,itis
importantthatallvehicleoccupants,especially
anychildren,whomustbeinthefrontseatbe-
causeofexceptionalcircumstances,beproperly
restrainedandasfarawayfromtheairbagas
possible.By keepingroombetweenthechild's
bodyandthefrontofthepassengercompart-
ment,theairbagcaninflatecompletelyandpro-
vide
supplementalprotectionincertainfrontal
collisions.

Notusingaboosterseat,usingthebooster
seatimproperly,incorrectlyinstalling aboos-
terseatorusingthevehiclesafetybeltim-
properlyincreasestheriskofseriouspersonal
