• Failure to heed warning lights and other important vehicle
information may result in serious personal injury or vehicle
damage.
• Whenever stalled or stopped for repair, move the vehicle a safe
distance off the road, stop the engine, and turn on the emergency
flasher

• The engine compartment of any motor vehicle is a potentially
hazardous area. Before you check anything in the engine compart-
ment, stop the engine and let it cool down. Always exercise

& WARNING
• If the J.. S (USA models l/ .J (Canada models ) warning light
does not go out , or if it comes on while driving , the ABS system is
not working properly. The vehicle can then be stopped only with
the standard brakes (without
ABS) . You will not ha ve the protec­
tion ABS provides. Contact your authorized Aud i dealer as soon a s
possible.
• USA model s: If the
BRAKE warning light and the B" warning
light come on together , the rear wheel s could lock up fir st under
hard braking . Rear wheel lock-up can cause loss of vehicle control
and an acc ident. Have your vehicle repaired immed iately by your
authorized Audi dealer o r a qualified workshop . Drive slowly and
avoid sudden , hard br ake applications .
• Canada models: If the brake warning light ID and the ABS
warning light come on together, the rear wheels could lock up
first under hard br aking . Rear wheel lock-up can cause loss of
vehicle control and an accident. Have your vehicle repaired imme ­
diately by your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified workshop .
Drive slowly and avoid sudden , hard brake applications. •

T he warning/indicator light fl ashe s if br oke flui d level is
low, if there is on A BS sys tem m alfunc tion o r a parkin g
br oke malfunction.
The lig ht illu min a tes w hen the igniti on is tur ned o n. I t goes out after
the engine has been started. Th is indicates that the brake warning
ligh t is functioni ng prope rly.
If the br ake warning light does not light up when the engine is
cranking , there may be a malfunction in the electrical system . In this
case , contact your Audi dealer .
I f the brake system warning/indicator light f lashes, there is a brake

• Canada models: If the brake warning light «D> and the ABS
warning light come on together, the rear wheels could lock up
first under hard braking . Rear wheel lock-up can cause loss of
vehicle control and an accident. Have your vehicle repaired imme­ diately by your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified workshop .
Drive slowly and avoid sudden, hard brake applications.
• If the brake warning/indicator light does not go out after a few
seconds and the parking brake released, or lights up while you are
driving, the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir is too low . If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed immediately at low speed
to the nearest authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility
and have the brake system inspected.
• Always keep in mind that after several brake applications, you
will need greater pressure on the brake pedal to stop your vehicle. Do not rely on strained brakes to respond with maximum stopping
power in critical situations. You must allow for increased braking
distances . The extra distance used up by fading brakes could lead
to an accident. •

not locked . The steering is locked :
• If you press the

• If you c lose the driver's door and lock your vehicle from the

I f you should drive off with the parking brake stil l set, a warning tone
wi ll sound and the following will appear in the instrument cluster to
remind you to release the parking brake:
Parking bra ke i s applied
The parking brake warning comes on on ly after you have driven for
longer than 3 seconds and faster than 5 mph (5 km/h).
The pa rking brake warning light

the parking brake is set and you switch on the ignition .
& WARNING
Always relea se t he parking brake completely. A p artially engaged
brake will overh eat th e rea r brake s, reduce their effe ctiven ess and
ca use e xcessive w ear. Thi s co uld lead to brake failure and an a cci­
dent .
(D Note
Only after the vehicle has come to comp lete stop, should you firmly
set the parking bra ke and move the selector lever into "P ". •
Parking
To prevent a parked vehicle from roll ing away, there are a
few things yo u should do.
Wh en you park your vehicle , do the following
- Stop the vehicle using the brake pedal.
- App ly the parking brake firmly.
- Mov e the se lector l ev er in to th e
P pos ition ~ & .
- Switch off the engine a nd remove the ig nitio n key from

When you park your vehicle on hills , do the
following

& WARNING
This is how you can reduce the risk of injury when leaving your
vehicle.
• Never park the vehicle where it can come in contact with dry
grass, spilled fuel or any other flammable materials.
• When parking on hills , always turn the wheels so that the front
wheels will first roll into the curb, if the vehicle should start to roll .
• Never allow anyone -especially small children -to remain in the
vehicle when it is locked. Locked doors make it more difficult for
rescuers to access the passenger compartment in the event of an
emergency. Danger to life!
• Never leave children unsupervised in the vehicle. Children
could release the parking brake or move the gearsh ift lever out of
gear . The vehicle could start to roll away and cause an acc ident.
• No matter what the season is, the temperature in a parked
vehicle can reach dangerous levels .

• Please e xercise care whe n you pa rk your ve hicle i n par king areas
with parking barrie rs or curbs . Parking barriers and curbs vary in
hei ght a nd could damage you r bum per a nd rela ted componen ts as
the front of your vehicle moves over a barrier or curb that is too
high , as you park o r as y ou bac k out o f a par king s pot. In o rde r to b e
sure that no such damage can occur, you may wish to stop short of
h av ing the fr ont tir es of you r car touch th e parkin g bar rier or cu rb.
• Pl ease a lso exercise exceptional care when you drive up o r down
s tee p ra mp s or drive over curbs o r other ob stacl es, for wh ich th e
vehic le is not designed, because com ponents of the vehicle c lose to
th e gr oun d, suc h as bump er cove rs, s poile rs and suspens io n an d
e x haust syst em compon ents, may become damaged. •
Starting on hills

T he system is activated when the b ra ke peda l is depressed
for a few
seconds .
Fo r thi s, the veh icle must be stand ing in uphill d riv in g
di rection.

moment to prevent the vehicle from rolling back when startin g. At
t hi s t ime, yo u ca n ea sily begi n to move yo ur vehicle.
& WARNING
• If you did not begin moving immediately after relea sing the
brake pedal , under certain c ircumstances , the vehicle would begin
to roll backward . Depress the brake pedal immediately or engage
the parking brake .
• Should the engine stall , depress the brake pedal immediately
or engage the parking brake . .,_

• In order to prevent the vehicle from rolling back unintentionally
when starting in stop -and -go traffic , keep the brake pedal
depressed for a few se conds before driving off .
• When you leave the vehicle -eve n if only briefly -, switch off the
ignition and make sure to remove the ignition key. Also engage the
parking brake to prevent your vehicle from rolling unintentionally .
This particularly applies if ch ildren are left in the vehicle -danger
of accident! •

Switching the system on
The cr uise c ontro l syst em makes i t possible to drive a t a
c o ns tan t spee d star ting at 20 mph (30 km /h).

T he display => fig. 158 wi ll show the set speed. The display may vary
d epend ing on the type o f dis play i n yo ur vehicle. The indi cator lig ht
CRUISE (US model)/ 0" (Canadian model) will a lso light up in the
instr ument clus te r.
& WARNING
• Always pay attention to traffic even when the cruise control is
switched on . You are always responsible for your speed and the
distance between your vehicle and other vehicles.
• For safety reasons, the cruise control should not be used in the
city, in stop -and -go traffic, on twisting roads and when road condi ­
tions are poor (such as ice , fog , gravel , heavy rain and hydro­
planing ) -risk of accident.
• Turn off the cruise control temporar ily when entering turn
lanes, highway exit lanes or in constru ction zones.
• Please note that inadvertently "rest ing " your foot on the accel­
erator pedal cau ses the cruise control not to brake . This is because
the cruise control is overridden by the driver's acceleration . ..

tained. The ACC system is not switched off, and increased attention
to the traffic situation is absolutely necessary. The following may be
reasons why the message
ACC functionality limited appears:
• The ACC sensor is dirty . The ACC system is not reacting, or is not
reacting correctly, to moving vehicles up ahead in your lane of
travel.
• There may be very light traffic on and there is nothing that marks
the side of the road (for example, guard rails, traffic signs, trees). As
soon as a moving vehicle up ahead is detected again, ACC becomes
active again and the message disappears .
The ACC sensor is located behind the area to the right of the front
license pla te . If the ACC sensor is dirty or blocked, clean the area to
restore system operation.
Parking brake !
The text message Parking brake ! appears, when the parking brake
is applied. ACC is turned off. A warning tone sounds as a reminder.
Stationary object ahead
The text messag e Stationary object ahead appears, when you want
to activate the system and there is a stationary vehicle or an object
immediately in front of you.
Gradient too steep
The text message Gradient too steep appears when the maximum
gradient for proper ACC operation has been exceeded. Adaptive
Cruise Control is turned off. A warning tone also sounds as a
reminder.
ACC off: manual control!
The text message ACC off: manual control! appears after the vehicle
has been brought to a standstill by the Adaptive Cruise Control. In
this case you must depress the brake pedal to prevent the vehicle
from rolling. A warning tone sounds as a reminder .
Selector lever position!
The text message Selector lever position! appears when the
selector lever is moved to position
N. In this position, Adaptive
Cruise Control is not available. •

Driver intervention prompt
The driver intervention prompt calls on the driver to take
over the situation.

In certain situations , the braking power of the Adaptive Cruise
Control is not enough to maintain an adequate distance to the
vehicle up ahead. In these situations, the Adaptive Cruise Control
calls the driver to take action .
The
driver intervention prompt alerts you visually and audibly to
take over .

• The indicator light
