brake and take evasive action to avoid
collisions and other accident situations.
- Never allow the closing speed between
you and other vehicles to be so high that
the adaptive cruise control may not be
able to slow your vehicle safely. If clos­
ing speed is too high, you must apply the
brakes yourself to reduce the risk of a
rear-end crash.
- Never rest your foot on the accelerator peda l, especia lly when the adaptive
cruise control is be ing used. Pressu re on
the accelerator w ill override the ACC
braking function and prevent the brakes
from being applied when ACC detects a
situation when the brakes must be ap­
plied.
- Never use adaptive cruise contro l when
you cannot drive safe ly at a steady
speed, including on city streets, on wind­
ing roads or when road conditions are
poor (for example, on ice, gravel, in fog,
heavy rain or on wet roads that increase
the risk of hydroplaning) .
- The radar sensor's
vision can be reduced
by rain, snow and heavy road spray.
T hese and sim ilar condit ions can prevent
vehicles up a head from being accurately
detected and in some cases they may not
be detected at al l. Do not use ACC when
the radar sensors cannot accurately de­
tect vehicles moving ahead of yo u in traf­
fic.
- Always turn off adaptive cruise contro l
when entering turn lanes, exit lanes and
construction zones or in similar situa­
t ions because the vehicle will automati­
cally accelerate to the stored speed when
the road ahead is clear.
- To prevent unintended operation, always
switch ACC off when it is not be ing used.

- For safety reasons, the stored speed is
deleted when the ignition is turned off .
- The E lectronic Stab ility Contro l (ESC) and
the Anti-Slip Regulat ion (ASR) cannot be
deact ivated when the adaptive cruise control is switched on
. If the ESC and the
Anti-Slip Reg ulation (ASR) has been de­
act ivated and you then switch on the
adaptive cru ise contro l, the ESC function
w ill also be act ivated automatically.
- Damage caused by accidents and some m inor collisions can affect the radar sen­
sor settings and cause the system to
ma lf u nction or switch off completely.
- The radar sensor cover is heated. In win­
ter conditions, you should st ill check be­
fore dr iv ing to make su re it is free of ice
and snow. If necessary, clean the a rea
nea r the radar sensor ca refully

How does adaptive cruise control work?

Vehicles traveling ahead are detected with
the aid of a radar sensor .

that must have a certain size. The system re­
sponds only after the distance measurement has been made. If a measurement is not pos­
sible, the system cannot respond and w ill not
react to a vehicle or someth ing else up ahead.
Open road
When the road is clear, the adaptive cruise
contro l works like cr uise control. It maintains
a constant target speed specified by the driv­
er.
Driving in traff ic
If a slowe r vehicle driving ahead is detec ted,
the adaptive cruise contro l decelerates (within
the limits of the system)

slow your vehicle down and to a complete
stop if this is possible w ith in the system's lim ­

must depress the brake pedal to prevent the

Passing another vehicle
If you move in to the passing lane and no ve hi­
cle is detected ahead, the adaptive cr uise con­
trol acce le rates to the speed you have set and
maintains it.
Overr iding ACC
You can in cr ease yo ur speed at a ny time by
stepping on the accelera tor ped al. A fter you
release the accelerator peda l, the system ad­
justs back down to the speed you prev ious ly
set .
Reducing stopp ing distance
If the radar sensor detects that the d istance
to the vehicle a head is less than de fined m ini­
mum distance, the brakes are automatically
prepared fo r emergency braking by the driver .
The brake pads are moved very close to the brake d iscs without actually braking the vehi­
cle. This brake assistant feature reacts more
quick ly to the dr ive r's brak ing, and also works
when adapt ive cruise control is off . The stop­
ping distance is reduced as a result of th is ad­
vance brake p reparation . Th is fun ction does
not perform any emergency b rak ing mane u­
vers by itse lf; the dr iver mus t always apply the
brakes.
A WARNING
If ACC initiates a braking maneuver, the brake pedal w ill be retracted. Inter ference
with the brake peda l can prevent ACC from
slowing the veh icle down and cause a
crash and serious personal injury.
- Never put anything in the driver's foot­
well or let anyth ing fall into it. An object
in the driver's footwe ll can interfe re with
the peda ls and prevent the acce le rator
from being used to override ACC or pre­
vent ACC from being switched off when
the brake pedal is depressed and also
prevent the vehicle from being slowed
down or stopped .
- On ly use floor mats that keep the area
around the peda ls free and that can be
securely fastened to the footwell .

The Audi braking guard is active from a speed
of approx. 20 mph (30 km/h) and works with­
in the system limits

hicle

tended to measure the distance to reflect ive
surfaces. If a measurement is not possible,
the system does not respond .
When the measurement has been taken, the
system can recognize a poss ibly hazardous sit ­
uation, for example, when a vehicle up ahead
in your lane of travel suddenly brakes or when
your ow n ve hicle is moving at high speed to­
wards a much s lowe r vehicle up ahead . As
soon as the system senses that a possible co l­
l ision with the vehicle up ahead can only be
avoided by immediate full brake appl ication or
by an avoidance maneuver, a warning appears .
The system has a defau lt response time to be
ab le to sig na l befo re a col lision occu rs. This
system response time is a utomat ica lly re­
d uced if you acce lerate actively, for example
to join a highway. Braking, transverse acce ler­
ation and the steering ang le can lead to a re­
duced system response time. The warning is
deactivated if you begin to overtake with full
acceleration.
The system can make yo u aware of two differ­
ent hazardo us situations:
Distance
The distance warn ing is g iven if the sys tem
calc ulates that the re is not enough d istance
to the vehicle up ahead a period of more than 5 seconds. If the distance is less than 30 feet
(9 meters) at SO mph (80 km/h), for example,
an optical d isplay comes on in the instrument
cluster

If the vehicle ahead brakes sharply, A udi brak­
ing guard cannot help you to avoid a co llision,
even in the case of an immediate response.
Take immediate act ion to avoid the collision
and increase the distance to the vehicle up
ahead .

Speed
If there is a much slowe r vehicle mov ing up
ahead in your lane, or if the vehicle ahead brakes sharply, the Audi brak ing guard calcu­
lates the point from which a collision can only
be avoided by f ull braking or by an avo idance
maneuver . If a warning does sound, a possible
collision with the veh icle in front can only be
avo ided through an evas ive maneuver or by
braking.
The warning is given in two stages:
- Pre-warnin g: A visua l display appears in the
instrument cluster and a warning tone
sounds.
- Acute w arning : If you do not respond to the
pre-warning, the second stage warning is
given. A quick brake application helps to di­
rect your attention to the road and traffic
situat ion.
Under heavy braking, the brake assistant
i=> page 114 also helps you benefit from maxi­
mum brak ing eff ic iency.
_& WARNING
Inattention can cause collisions, other ac­
cidents and ser ious personal inju ries.
- Always pay close attent ion to the traffic,
even when the Audi braking guard is
sw itched on. The Audi braking guard pro­
vides a wa rning but does not brake the
car for you. You must app ly the brakes
yourse lf!
- Always keep the safe and lega l distance
between yo ur vehicle and vehicles up
ahead.
- Aud i brak ing g uard wor ks within lim its
and will no t respond outside the system
limits, fo r example when approach ing a
stopped vehicle or stationary obstacle (end of a traffic jam or vehicle that has
broken down in traffic).
- Always remember that the radar sensor
for the Audi braking guard works within
defined detect ion and range limits that
may prevent the proper detection of oth­
er vehicles .

Operation
Applies to vehicles: with side assist
Side assist compares the distance and differ­
ence in speed of detected vehicles with the
speed of your vehicle . Whenever the differ­
ence in speed and d istance is registered as no­
table if you were to change lanes, a signal l ight appea rs on the respective mirror.
The signal can light up if you are passed by a
vehicle or if you are pass ing another vehicle.
If you pass another vehicle s lowly (difference
in speed less than 9 mph, or 15 km/h), the
signal light will come on as soon as the other
vehicle is in your blind spot and is detected by
side assist . When the difference in speed is
g reater, the signal light will not come on.
Informational and alert stage signals
Applies to vehicles: with side assist
Side assist has two signal stages:
- the informational stage signal, and
- the alert stage signal.
Side assist he lps you by using the appropriate
signal stage, depending on whether or not
you have activated the turn signal, and thus have indicated that you are or are not chang­
in g lanes .
Informational stage signal
As long as you have not activated the turn sig­
nal, side assist informs you of detected vehi­
cles that are registered as being in a notable locat ion if you were to change lanes. Whenev­
er the detected vehicle's difference i n speed
and distance is registered by side assist as no­
table, the signal light on the respective m irror
produces muted illuminat ion.
The br ightness of the informat ional stage sig ­
nal is designed not to be as intense, so that it
does not interfere with your view of the road
when yo u are driving and have no intention of
changing lanes. When you look i n the outside

mirror, you can clearly see the informational
stage signal.
Alert stage signal
When you activate the turn signal, and s ide
ass ist has detected a vehicle in a notable loca­
t ion on that part icular s ide, the signa l light on
this side mirror flashes brightly. The repeated
brief and bright flashing of the alert stage
signal reminds you to carefully check traffic to
the rear in the outside mirror and over your
shoulder, so that you can safely complete the lane change

The basic brightness se tting of the signal on
t he ou tside mirror can be adjusted via the
MMI .

The brightne ss of the signal light for both the
in format ional and alert stages is automatical ­
ly adjusted to amb ient light conditions. In ad­
d ition, you can adjust the
basic brightness
sepa rately, via the brigh tness function.
Wh ile making the adjustment, the new
brightness setting is displayed briefly . The
brightness displayed is that of the informa­
tional stage signal. The alert stage signal
brightness is linked to the informational stage
signal brightness.
The informational stage signal br ightness
should be adjusted so that you not ice the sig­
nal illuminat ion when yo u loo k in the outside
mirror, but not when you look forward
through the windshield.
I n very dark or l ight surroundings , the auto­
mat ic brightness setting adjusts signal light
brightness to maximum or minimum intensi ­
ty, as needed. In circumstances such as these,
you may not notice any change in the bright­
ness on the outside mirror when ad justing the
basic brightness .
You may not notice the change until lighting
conditions are normal again.

-Side ass ist is not active when the basic
brightness is adjusted . The s ignal light
comes on briefly to help you make the
adjustment .

Reverse Parking

no obstacle such as a wall near the parking
spot. Otherwise, please read the informat ion
prov ided in the "Parking Next to Obstacles"
section.

from a parked vehicle.

When t here is an obstacle (such as a wall)

the steering wheel much earlier. There should
be a suffic ient amo unt of space between the
curb and the b lue curve, and the blue c urve

- Automatic lowering: When a speed of
about 75 mph (120 km/h) is exceeded for
more than 30 seconds, the vehicle is auto­
matically lowered by 0.6 inch (15 mm) to
low level.
-Automatic raising: The vehicle is automati­
ca lly raised to
normal level again, if the
speed falls below about 44 mph (70 km/h)
for a period of 2 minutes . The vehicle is
raised immediately when speed falls below
about 22 mph (35 km/h) .
Offroad
Select the offroad mode when you have to
travel over poor quality sections of road (e.g. trails). In th is mode, the vehicle is ra ised to
high level 1, and damping characteristics for
poor road stretches are selected . When
switch ing to offroad mode, the Adaptive Air
Suspension indicator appears automat ically in
the instrument cluster display ¢
page 153.
The offroad mode can only be activated at
speeds below 37 mph (60 km/h). Offroad mode ends automat ically and the automatic
mode is activated when a speed of approxi­
mately SO mph (80 km/h) is exceeded.
Lift
Select the lift mode when except ionally high
ground clearance is needed at a reduced
speed. In thi s mode, the vehicle is ra ised to
high level 2. When switching to lift mode, the
Adaptive A ir Suspension indicator appears au­
tomatically in the instrument cluster display
c!) page 153.
The lift mode can be activated only at speeds
below 12 mph (20 km/h) . When a speed of
about 25 mph (40 km/h) is exceeded , the sys­
tem automatically leaves lift mode and the
offroad mode is activated. The instrument
cluster display automat ically switches the dis­
p lay to Adaptive Air Suspension to indicate re­
duced ground clearance.
MMI settings
Applies to vehicles: with Adaptive Air Suspension
Driving modes are adjusted in the MMI and
the current vehicle level is displayed .

Raising and lowering
If the arrow (D Q fig. 174 is white or if the ar­
rows
(D blink ¢ fig. 175, the vehicle is be ing
raised .
If the arrow @ Q fig. 17 4 is white or if the ar­
rows
(D point downward and blink¢ fig. 175,
the vehicle is being lowered.
T he respective arrow stays on/blinks until the
level change is complete. The time used for a
level change can vary, depending on the cur­
rent driving conditions.
Displaying the vehicle level
The current veh icle level is shown with seg ­
ments filled out in the segment display @. If
only the bottom segment is filled out, the ve-
hicle is at highway level.
