Your vehicle must not be towed in the
event of a malfunction in the electronic
steering column lock because it cannot be
steered due to the locked steering. If it is
towed w ith the steering locked, there is
the risk of an accident .
~ Ignition lock malfunction
A malfunction in the ignition lock must be re­
paired immediately.
If the . symbo l in the display blinks, there is
a ma lfunction in the electronic ignition lock.
An addit ional driver message ca n also be d is­
played by pressing the
! CHECK I button:
Ignition lock defective. Contact workshop !
• Do not turn the eng ine off.
• Drive immediately to an authorized Audi
dealer to have the ma lf u nction corrected.
If there is a ma lfunction in the e lectronic igni ­
tion lock, the ignition cannot be turned off.
Drive immediately to an authorized Audi dea l­
er to have the cause of the ma lfunction cor­
rected.
On vehicles with Convenience key*, the engine
should not be switched off using the
! STOP !
button beca use the engine ca nnot be sta rted
again after the ignition is switched off.
' Yellow symbols
A yellow symbol means WARNING.

Yellow symbo ls indicate a priority 2 malfunc­
t ion - Warning!
When a yellow war ning symbol appears,
one
warning tone sounds . A driver message ap­
pears as well to explain the malfunction in
more de tail. The driver warning goes out after
about 5 seconds, but it can be brought up
again at any time by pressing the
! CHECK I but­
ton .
Check the displayed function as soon as possi­
ble. If
more than one priority 2 ma lf u nction is
detected, all symbols will appear one after
the other for about 2 seconds .

This reminder appears along with the !!I sym ­
bol if the master key is removed from the
ve­
hicle with the engine runn ing. It is intended
to rem ind you (e .g. whe n cha ng ing dr ive rs)
not to cont inue the journey without the mas­
te r k ey.
If the master key is no longer in the ve hicle ,
you cannot swi tch off t he ig nit io n after stop­
ping the engine an d you also cannot start the
engine aga in. What is mo re, you cannot lo ck
t he ve hicl e from the o utsi de.

If t he symbol illumina tes, the l ight se nsor has
f ailed. For safe ty rea sons the low beams are
tu rned on permanently with t he switc h in
AU­
TO. However , yo u can cont inue to tu rn the
li g hts on and off using the light switch . In the
case of a defect in the rain sensor, t he wind ­
shield wiper lever functions are still availab le.
Have the light/rain senso r ch ecked as soon as
poss ible by an author ized Audi dealer .

-Prior to using a car wash, the windshield
wiper system must be switched
off (lever
i n position 0) . This helps to prevent unin ­
tentiona l switching on and damage to
the windshie ld w iper system .
@ Tips
-The windshield wipers are switched off
when the ignition is turned off. Activate
the w indshield w ipers after the ignit ion
i s switched back on by moving the wind­
sh ield wiper lever to any pos ition.
- Worn or dirty windshield wiper blades
cause smearing which can affect the op­
eration of the rain sensor . Check the con­
dit ion of yo ur windshield wipe r blades
regularly.
- The rain sensor is part of the interval
wiping system. Turning
off the ignition
will a lso deact ivate the rain sensor. To re­
activate the sensor, sw itch
off the inter­
va l w iping function, then switch it back
on again.
- Make sure the washer fluid reservoir in
the engine compartment is topped
off
before going on a long trip . Look up
c:;, page 2 73 for checking and fi lling the
washer container.
Rear window wiper
The wiper lever is also used to operate the
rear window wiper and the automatic wiper/
washer function.

The rear window wiper and the automatic wip­
er/washer functions are activated as follows:
Clear vision 65
Intermittent wiping
.,. Push the wiper lever forward to the first po­
sition @

w ill wipe the window approx. every four sec­
onds.
Automatic wiper /washer function
.,. Push the wiper lever fo rward to the second
stop,
position (J) , and hold it there for as
long as you want the rear wiper/washer to
operate.
.,. Release the lever again. the wiper will keep
running for approx. four seconds.
Switching intermittent wiper action off
.,. Pull the lever all the way back to the origi-
nal position .
As soon as the reverse gear is engaged and
the front w ipers are turned on and operating
at the same time, the rear w iper also turns on
automatically.
A WARNING
Wiper blades are crucial for safe driving!
Only in good condit ion are they able to
clear the w indows properly to provide un­
restricted visib ility. Worn or frayed w iper
blades are a safety hazard!

Replacing windshield wiper blades
(D Note
In freezing or near freezing conditions:
- Always check that the w iper b lades are
not frozen to the g lass before you turn
the wiper on. Loosen a wiper blade which
is frozen in place before operat ing the
w iper to prevent damage to the wiper
blade or the wiper motor.
- Do not use the w iper to clear a frosted
w indow . Us ing the wipers as a conven­
ient ice scrape r will destroy the wiper
blades.

Engine oil
Engine oil specifications
The engine oil used in your Audi needs the
right kind of oil.
The engine in your Audi is a sophist icated
powerplant that was built to exacting specifi­
cations. Th is engine needs the right kind of
engi ne oil that meets specifications regard ing
quality and v iscosity so that it can run
smooth ly and reliab ly. Choosing the right oil
and changing oil within the time and mileage
intervals printed in your vehicle's Warranty
&
Maintenance booklet matters a lot more to­
day tha n it did years ago . Audi has developed
a spec ia l quality standard for eng ine oil that
will help assure that your vehicle's engine w ill
get the lubr ication it needs for proper opera­
t ion .
Modern engine lubr ication has taken a quan ­
tum leap in the last few years. Many synthetic "'

Battery replacement
The new battery must have th e sam e specifi­
cations and dim ensions as the original equip­
ment battery.
Intell igent energy management in your vehi­
cle is respons ible for d istr ibuting the e lectr i­
cal energy throughout your vehicle

men t system w ill keep the eng ine ba tte ry
ch arged be tte r th en vehicles w ithout t his sys ­
tem . To make sure the additional e lectrica l en ­
e rgy is available once again after you have
changed the battery, we recommend that you install batteries of the same type and man u­
facture only (the same as those installed at
the time your vehicle was delivered). Specifi­
cations a re listed on the battery hous ing . Your
author ized dealer must code the battery in
the energy manageme nt system to enable yo u
to use the energy managemen t fu nctions co r­
rectly after rep lac ing the b attery .
If it is not poss ible to use a battery of this
type, the new battery must have the same ca­
paci ty, voltage ( 12 volts) , a mpe rage , con ­
s truc tion and pl ug sea ling.
W hen insta lli ng the battery, make sure the ig­
ni tion and all e lectr ical c ons umers a re turned
off.
