@ Tips
The ill umi nat ion fo r th e i nstru me nt cl uster
lights up whe never yo u switch on the i gni ­
tion with t he
vehicle headlights off . As
the daylight fades, the instrument cluster illumi nat ion likewise dims automatically
a n d w ill go out completely when t he out­
side light is very low. This feat ure is meant
to remind you to switch on the headlights
w hen o utside lig ht con dit io ns become
poor.
Engine coolant temperature gauge
The eng ine coolant gauge q page 10, fig. 3 CD
only works when the ignition is on. To p revent
damage to you r engine, please note the fol­
lowing impor tant po ints:
Engine cold
As long as the needle remains at or close to
the bottom of the gauge, the engi ne still has
not reached its operat ing temperature . Avoid
high eng ine speeds, heavy eng ine loads and
heavy th rottle a pplicat io ns.
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operat ing
temperature, the needle w ill move into the
midd le of the gauge and rema in the re. If th e
engine is worki ng ha rd at high outside tem­
peratures, the needle may rise up. This is no
need to worry as long as the. warni ng lig ht
i n the i nstr ument cluster does not ill uminate.
Warning light in the instrument cluster
When the. warning lig ht in the instr ument
cluster s tarts to flash, th is can mean one of
two things : either the coo lant
temperatur e is .,..

too high, or the coolant level is too low

If the needle is well in the upper area of the
ga uge , the coolant temperature is too high.
Stop the vehicle , switch the eng ine off and
allow the engine to cool.
If the warning light
comes on again after driving a short distance,
contact an authorized dealer.
A WARNING
- Always observe the warning in
¢
page 256, before opening the hood
and checking the engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartment.
You could bu rn yourself. Let the engine
cool off first until you can no longer see
or hear steam or coolant escaping.
0 Note
- Mount ing additional lights or accessories
i n front of the a ir inlets reduces the cool­
i ng effect of the radiator. At h igh outside
temperatures or high eng ine load , the
engine could overheat.
- The front spo iler has been designed to
properly distribute the cooling air when
the veh icle is moving. If the spoiler is
damaged, this cou ld reduce the cooling
effect and the engine could then over­ heat. Ask your authorized Audi dealer for
ass istance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM
(revolutions per minutes).
The tachometer @¢ page 10, fig. 3 is the left
of the two large clock-type displays.
The engine turns at a speed 1,000
times the
single digit in the display, e.g . if the needle is
pointing at the "2" the engine is turning at
2,000 RPM.
If engine RPM drops be low 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area at
the end of the scale indicates maximum
permissible engine RPM after the break-in pe­
riod. Before reaching this area , move these­
lector lever to position D (Drive) or ease your
foot off the accelerator pedal.
(D Note
The tachometer needle should not move
into the red range. If it does, then only for
a very short per iod of t i me. You could
damage your engine by driving at high RPM .

Upshifting early saves fuel and reduces en­
gine noise .

The date, time of day, and time and date for ­
mat can be set in the MMI. You can learn more
about this in the MMI manual.

-When open the driver door, the time,
date and odometer are disp layed for an

!CHECK I button q page 12 while the ig­
nition is sw itched off.

12 Instruments and warning/indicator lights
Speedometer with odometer
The speedometer shows you the vehicle
speed, and the odometer shows you how
many miles (kilometers) you have driven.

The odometer and trip odometer are located
inside the speedometer.
- USA mode ls - Miles
- Canada models -Kilometers
You can switch the display from miles to kilo­ meters and vice versa via the MMI. You can
find out more in the MMI manual.
Lower odometer
The lower odometer shows the total number
of mi les (kilometers) driven.
Upper odometer (trip odometer)
The upper odometer shows the tota l number
of mi les (kilometers) driven since you last re­
set the odometer to zero. You can use this od­
ometer when you want to keep track of how many miles (k ilometers) you have driven for a
single trip or errand. The last digit indicates
1/10 of a mile (100 meters).
You can reset the trip odometer to zero by
pressing the Reset button

Malfunction message
If there is a malfunction somewhere in the in­
strument cluster,
dEF will appear in the trip
odometer and will stay on. Contact your au ­
thorized Audi dealer to have the problem cor­
rected.
(D Tips
- When you open t he driver door, the time,

nition is switched off.
Fuel gauge
The fue l gauge only works when the ignition is
on .
When the needle reaches the reserve mark,
the
c> page 35 mJ symbol appears in the in­
strument cluster d isplay as well as the mes ­
sage
Please refuel. This message is meant to
remind you to
refuel.
The total tank capacity of your vehicle is listed
in
.:> page 325 .
@ Note
Never run the tank completely dry. An ir­
regular supply of fuel can cause engine
misfiring and fuel could enter the exhaust
system. The catalytic converter could then
overheat and be damaged.

¢1.~ Trailer turn signal assembly
Appl ies to vehicles: with towing hitch
The indicator light also blinks if the turn sig­
nal is operated when towing a trailer .
The indicator light. blinks when the turn
signal is used, if a trailer has been properly
connected to the vehicle.
If one of the turn signal bulbs on the trai ler is
burned out or defective, the indicator light
will not blink when you use the turn signals.
{!) Tips
For vehicles with a factory installed towing
hitch or a trailer h itch that was installed
later according to factory specifications,
the trailer tu rn signal assembly is actuat­
ed.
o Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (M IL) is part
of the On-Boa rd D iagnostic (OBD II) system.
The symbol
¢111ij li gh ts up when the igni tion is
turned on and will turn off after the engine has started and has sett led at a constant idle
speed. This ind icates that the MIL is working
properly .
The warning light i lluminates when there is a
malfunction in the engine e lectronic system .
Contact your authorized Audi dealer and have
the malfunction corrected.

Ci:> Adaptive Air Suspension

This II warning/indicator light has the fol­
l owing f unctions:
- It illuminates for a few seco nds after the ig­
nition is t urned on as f unct ion check and
then goes out . -
If the warning/indicator light illuminates or
blinks contin uously, there is a system fault
in the Adaptive Air Suspension. A system
fau lt can result in lim ited ride comfort and
lo w ground clea rance . Drive safely to the
nearest authorized Audi dealer or qualified
wo rkshop, and have the fault corrected.
- If the warning/indicator light flashes, you
should not dr ive the veh icle . The flashing
warning/indicator light points to an extreme H igh level. A very
pronounced lifting of the
veh icle (ext reme H igh leve l) can result, for
examp le, when a heavy load is removed
from the vehicle. As soon as the level has re ­
t u rned to norma l, the wa rning/indicator
light stops flashing, and you can drive away.
- If the warning/indicator lig ht flashes in con ­
junction with the. warning/indicator
light, you should not dr ive off immediately
in order to prevent damage to the under­
body. The two warn ing/ indicator lights
flashing together points to an extreme Low level. A ve ry
pronounced lowering of the ve­
hicle (extreme Low leve l) can result, for ex­
ample, from a heavy load. As soon as the
level has retu rned to normal, the warn ing/
ind icator lights stop flashing, and you can
drive away.
(D Note
If the w arning/ indic ator l igh t flas hes in
conjunction with the. warning/ind icator
li ght, you shou ld not d rive the vehicle be ­
cause low-lying vehicle parts can bottom
out as you drive over uneven ground and be damaged as a result.
~ Adaptive Air Suspension

This. warn ing/indicator light has the fo l­
low ing functions:
- It illuminates for a few seconds after the ig­ nition is turned on as function check and
then goes out .
- It comes on for approximately 15 seconds
as a warning of
reduced ground clearance , if .,,.

Resetting the service interval display
Your authorized Audi dealer w ill reset the cor­
responding service schedule after performing
the appropriate service on your vehicle. You
a lso have the possibility to reset the oi l
change schedule after having performed an
oil change according to Audi specifications.
Select

Service interval display > Reset
oil change interval
or ICARI function button>
Car systems* control button > Servicing &
checks > Service intervals > Reset oil change
interval.
(D Note
- Only reset the o il change d isp lay when
you have completed an oil change.
- If you d isconnect the battery terminals,
no calculations can be made for the serv­
i ce interval display during this time and
no service reminder will appear. Remem­
ber that observing the proper service in­
terva ls is vitally important to extending
the life of your vehicle, particularly the
engine, and maintaining its value. Do not
exceed the time interval for the next
serv ice, even if the vehicle mileage is
low .
(D Tips
The informat ion in the Serv ice Reminder
remains stored even when the vehicle bat­
tery is disconnected .
Trip computer
Introduction
The trip computer gives you information on
current and average fuel mileage, average
speed, fuel range and driving time.

The following dr iving informa tion is con tinu­
ous ly evaluated by the trip computer and can
be displayed sequentially in the instrument
cluster disp lay.
Fuel range
T he es timated cruis ing range in miles ( km)
appea rs in the display. This tells you how far
your vehicle will be ab le to travel on the c ur­
rent tank of fuel and with the same driving
style. The display changes in increments of
Smiles (10 km).
T he cruising range is calculated based on the
fuel consumption for the last 18 miles
(30 km). If you drive conservative ly, the cruis­
ing range will increase.
Average fuel mileage
The average fuel economy in MPG (l/100 km)
since you last cleared the memory appears in
this disp lay. You can use this display to adjust
your driving technique to achieve a desired
mileage.
Current fuel mileage
The instantaneous fuel consumption in m iles
per gallon ( l/100 km) is shown in this display.
You can use this display to adjust your driving
technique to achieve a desired m ileage .

Fue l consumption is reca lculated at interva ls
of 33 yards (30 meters). When the vehicle is
stationary, the most recent fue l consumption
is displayed .
Average speed
The average speed in mph (km/h) since the
l ast time the disp lay was reset appears in the
display .
Elapsed time
The length of time that you have been driving
since you last reset the memory appears in
this display.
Distance
The distance that has been covered since the
l ast time the memory was cleared appears in
the disp lay.
(D Tips
- Fuel consumptions (ave rage and cur­
rent), range and speed are displayed in
metric units on Canadian models.
-All stored va lues w ill be lost if the veh i­
cle battery is disconnected .
Memories
The trip computer is equipped with two fully
automatic memories as well as an efficiency
program".

You can switch between the trip computer 1

You can tell which memo ry level is cur rently

Single-trip memory (Trip computer 1)
The single-trip memory stores the trip infor­
mation from the time the ignition is turned on
until it is turned off. If the trip is continued
within 2 hours from the time the ignition was
turned off, the new data will be included in
the calculat ion of the current trip informa­
tion. If the trip is interrupted for
more than 2
hours
the memory is reset automatically.
Total-trip memory (Trip computer 2)
Unlike the single -trip memory, the total -trip
memory is not reset automat ical ly. This per­
mits you to evaluate your driv ing data for the
entire period between manua l resets.
Efficiency program*
The efficiency program can help you to use
less fuel ¢
page 26.
Operation
The trip computer is controlled by two
switches on the windshield wiper lever .

ignition is on. When you turn on the ignition,
the function that was in use when you last
turned the ignit ion off will be d isp layed .

puter (trip computer 1, 2 and the efficiency
prog ram*), information about other systems
can also be shown in the display. To switch the
d isp lay between the d ifferent information,
tap the I RESET! button @ briefly.
Resetting values to z ero
• Se lect a va lue in the desired trip computer
or in the efficiency program* .
• Press and ho ld the I RESE T
I button @for at
least one second. All va lues in the selected
trip computer or in the eff iciency program*
are reset to zero .
If the data in trip compute r 1 are deleted,
then the values in the efficiency program* will
a lso be reset.
W ith some vehicle equipment leve ls, the va l­
ues for the s ingle trip or total tr ip memory
can also be reset in the MMI

All stored values will be lost if the vehicle
battery is disconnected.
MMI settings
Basic settings for the trip computer con be
mode in the MM I.

The val ues in the single -trip or the to tal-tr ip

in the instrument cluster display. If one of the pieces of driver info
rmation is turned

Other equipment that i s cu rrently affecting
f uel consumption is lis ted in the eff iciency
program . The display shows up to three other
items of equipment @. The equipment using
the most fuel is l isted first. If more than three
items using fue l are switched on, the equ ip­
ment that is currently using the mos t fu el is
d isp layed .
A scale @also shows the current total con­
sumpt io n of all other equ ipment .
Fuel economy messages

Fuel economy messages are displayed when
fuel consumption is inc reased by certain con­
d itions . If you follow these fuel economy mes­
sages, you can reduce your vehicle's consump­
tion of fuel. The messages appear automati ­
cally and are o nly displayed in the eff ic iency

program . The fue l economy messages t urn off
automatica lly after a certain period of time .

On-Board Diagnostic
system (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (M IL) ¢..ij in
the instrument cluster¢
page 14, fig. 8 is
part of the On-Board Diagnos tic (OBD
II) sys­
tem .
The warning/ind icator light ill um inates when
the ignition is switched on and goes out after
the engine star ts and the id le has stabilized.
This indicates that the M IL is working prope r­
ly .
If the light does not go out after the engine
is started , or illuminates while you are dr iv­
ing, a malfunction may exist in the engine sys ­
tem . If the light illuminates, the catalytic con­
verter could be damaged .
Con tinue driving
with reduced powe r (avoid­
ing sustained high speeds and/or rapid accel ­
erations) and have the cond ition co rrected .
Contact your a uthorized Aud i dea ler.
If the light illum inates, the elec tronic speed
limiter may also be malfunctioning . For more

On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the compo­
nents of your emission control system. Each
monitored component in your engine system
has been assigned a code . In case of a mal­
function, the component will be ident ified
and the fault stored as a code in the control
module memory .
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fue l vapor recovery sys­
tem.
If the light illuminates after a refuelling ,
stop the veh icle and make sure the fuel filler
cap is proper ly closed (on ly vehicles with gaso­
line engine)

In o rder to make an accurate d iagnosis, the
stored data can only be displayed using spe­
cial diagnostic equipment (generic scan tool
for OBD).
I n o rder to connect the special diagnostic
equipment, push the plug into the Data Link
Connector (DLC) . The DLC is located to the
right of the hood release
c::> fig . 22.
Your author ized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop can interpret the code and perform the
necessary repair.
A WARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for
personal use. Incorrect usage can cause
ma lfunctions, which can increase the risk
of a collis ion!

limiter
Your vehicle may be factory equipped w ith
t ir es that are rated for a maximum speed of
130 mph (210 km/h) . This is less than the
maximum speed of your vehicle . To reduce the
risk of sudden tire fa ilure a nd loss of contro l if
the vehicle is operated at excessive speeds,
your vehicle also has an elec tronic speed limit­
er . The e lectronic speed limiter prevents your
vehicle from going faster than the tire speed

If the engine control unit receives faulty vehi­
cle roadspeed signals, the Malfunction Indica ­
tor Lamp (MIL)
¢4 will illuminate . If this oc­
curs, contact the nearest authorized Audi
dealer for assistance.

Always observe the posted speed limits
and adjust your speed to suit prevailing
road, traffic and weather cond itions . Never
drive your vehicle faster than the maxi­
mum speed rating of the tires installed.

Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
T he speed warning system warns the driver if
he exceeds a previo usly stored maximum
speed . A warning tone wi ll so und as soon as
the vehicle speed exceeds the set speed by about 3 mph (3 km/h). At the same time, a
warning symbol appears in the display.
The speed warning system has
two warning
thresholds
that function independently of
each other and that have somewhat different
purposes:
Speed warning 1
You can use speed warning 1 to set the maxi­
mum speed while you are driving. This setting "'
