36 Opening and clo sing
- You cannot open the doors or the rear lid
from th e outside (increased security, for exÂ
amp le when you are stopped at a red light).
- The diodes in the power locking switch illuÂ
minate when all the doors are closed and
locked .
- You can unlock and open the doors from the
inside by pulling on the door hand le .
- If you have a crash and the airbag is activat Â
ed, the doors automatically un lock .
.&_ WARNING
- The power locking switch works with the
ignition off and automatically locks the
entire vehicle when it is actuated .
- On a vehicle locked from the outs ide the
power locking system switch is inoperaÂ
t ive .
- locked doors make it more difficult for
emergency workers to get into the vehiÂ
cle, which puts lives at risk . Do not leave
anyone beh ind in the veh icle, especially
children.

Your vehicle is locked automatically at a speed of
9 mph (15 km/h) (Auto lock)

Setting power locking
In the radio/MM!* , you can set which doors
the central locking system will unlock.

Locking the front pa ssenger' s door with
th e mechanical ke y
The emergency lock is located on the rear side
of the front passenger's door.
It is on ly visible
when the door is open.
• Remove the mechanical key

• Pull the cover cap out of the opening
¢ fig . 25.
• Inse rt the key in the inside slot and turn it
all the way to the right .
Once the front passenger's door has been
closed , you cannot open it again from the out Â
side. The door can be opened from the inside
by pulling the door handle.

After the ign ition is swi tched on, the powÂ
er locking system switch is enab led.
Electronic immobilizer
The immobilizer prevents your vehicle from
being started by unauthorized persons.

I nside the key there is a computer chip . T his
ch ip automatically activates/deactivates the
e lectronic immob ilizer.
Appli es to v eh icl es with ign ition lock :
The electronic immobilizer deactivates autoÂ
mat ica lly when you insert the remote control
key into the ignition lock.

If the remote control key is located inside the
vehicle and you press the
I STAR T ENGINE ST OPI button, the electro nic
immobilizer deactivates a utomatically. If you
switch the ignition
off and remove the remote
cont rol key from the vehicle, the electronic
immobili zer activates again automatically.
A WARNING
-
Always take the key with you when you
leave the vehicle . The key can disarm the
electronic engine immobilizer and permit
an unauthorized person to start the engine
and enable operation of the vehicle sysÂ
tems such as power w indow or power sunÂ
roof leading to serious personal injury.
© Tips
- T he veh icle cannot be started if an unauÂ
tho rized key is used. The vehicle may not
start if another radio device such as a key
for another ve hicle or a transponder is
located on the key ring .

- When you leave your vehicle - even if on-
ly briefly - always remove the ignition
key. This applies particularly when chilÂ
dren remain in the vehicle. Otherwise the
children could start the engine or operÂ
ate electrical equipment (e.g . power winÂ
dows). The power windows are function Â
al until the driver's door or passenger's
door has been opened.
- Pay close attention when closing the win dows to prevent pinching of hands or
limbs.
- When locking the vehicle from outside,
the vehicle must be unoccupied since the
windows can no longer be opened in an
emergency.

- When you open the doors, the windows
automatically lower about 10 mm .
- After the ignition has been switched off, the windows can still be opened or
closed for about 10 minutes. The winÂ
dow regulators are not switched until
the driver's or passenger's door is
opened.

-The light sensor * for headl ight control is
l ocated in the rear view m irror mount.
You should therefore not apply any st ickÂ
ers to the windsh ield in this area in order
to prevent malfunctions or failures .
- Some exterior lighting functions can be
adjusted

-When yo u remove you r key from the igniÂ
tion w hile the vehicle's lights are turned
on, a buzzer sounds as long as the drivÂ
er's door is open.
- In cool or damp weather, t he ins ide of
the headlights, turn signa ls and tail
li ghts can fog ove r due to the tem pera Â
ture diffe ren ce betwe en the inside and
outside. They will clear shor tly after
swi tching t hem on. This d oes not aff ect
the service life of the ligh ting.
- In the even t of a ligh t sensor malfuncÂ
tion, the drive r is no tifie d in the inst ru Â

The lever operates the turn signal s, the high
beams and the headlight flasher .

This funct ion can be switched on and
off.

Auto headlight s*
When the light switch is in the AUTO
r::!) page 52 position, the sw itch-on po int of the
lights can be changed in the automatic driving
light function.
Daytime running lights
USA m odels: You can switch the dayt ime runÂ
ni ng lights
on and o ff .
Canada mod els: The function cannot be
turned off .
It is activated automat ica lly each
time the ign ition is switched on.
Travel mod e*
The headlight beam is asymmetrical. This proÂ
vides stronger illum ination on the s ide of the
road on wh ich you are driving . If you a re drivÂ
ing i n a count ry that d rives on the opposite
side of the road from you r own country, th is
will cause glare for oncoming dr ivers. To preÂ
vent glare :
- Trave l mode must be selected in vehicles
with Xenon headlights*.
- In vehicles with halogen head lights, certain
areas of the head light lenses must be covÂ
ered w ith wate rproof adhesive covers tha t
p revent light from passing through. For
more information, p lease see your author Â
i zed Audi dea ler or author ized repair fac ility .
@ Tips
When trave l mode is activated, a display in
the driver information system indicates
this each time you switch the ignitio n on.
Emergency flashers

The emergency flashers makes other motoÂ
rists aware that you or your vehicle are in an
emergency situation .

emergency flashers on or

When the emergency flashers are on, all four
turn s ignals b link at the same time. The turn
s ignal indicator lights

cluster, as well as the l ight in the emergency
flasher switch ~ blink likewise.
You can indicate a lane change or a t urn when
the emergency flashers are switched on by usÂ
ing t he turn signal lever. The emergency flashÂ
ers stop temporarily .
T he emergency flashers also work when the
ignition is turned off .
T he emergency flashers wi ll tu rn on automat iÂ
ca lly if yo u are in an accident where the airbag
has deployed.
(D Tips
You sho uld turn on the emergency flas hers
when:
- yo u are the last veh icle standing in a t ra fÂ
fic jam so that any other vehicles corning can see you, o r whe n
- yo ur vehicle has bro ken down or you are
in an emergency s ituation, or when
- yo ur vehicle is be ing towed by a tow
t ruck or if you are towing ano ther vehicle
beh ind you .

Press the button @. The LED in the button ilÂ
l uminates .
If the LED illuminates, the interior lights turn
on automatically when you unlock the vehicle,
open a door or remove the ignition key. The inÂ
terior lights turn off several seconds after
your close the doors, when you lock the vehiÂ
cle or when you turn the ignition on. When a
door is open, the light turns off after a few
minutes.

To turn a reading light on/off, press the butÂ

Instrument illumination
The basic brightness of the illumination for
the instruments, the center console and the
display can be adjusted.

.,. Press the knob to release it .
.. Turn the knob toward"-" or"+" to reduce or
increase the brightness .
.,. Press the knob again to return it to its origiÂ
nal position.
(D Tips
The instrument illumination (for dials and
needles) lights on when the ignition is
switched on and the vehicle lights are
turned off. As the daylight fades, the illuÂ
mination of the dials likewise dims autoÂ
matically and will go out completely when
the outside light is
very low. This feature is
meant to remind you to switch on the
headlights when outside light conditions
become poor.

Turn the knob to the desired position :
Q/P -In t his position , you can adjust the
driver's and front passenger's exter ior mirrors
by turn ing the knob in the des ired direction.
(jjjl -The mirrors are heated depending on the
outside temperatu re.

To help you see the curb when backing into a pa rking space, the surface of the m irror t ilts
slightly . The knob m ust be in the
P posit ion
for this to happen .
You can adjust the ti lted mirror surface by
turning the knob in the desired direction .
When you move out of reverse and into anothÂ
e r gear, the new mirror posi tion is stored and
assigned to the key you are using.
The mirror goes back into its origina l posit io n
once yo u drive forward f aster than 9 mph
(15 km/h) or switch the ignition off .
_& WARNING
Curved mirror s urfaces (convex or spheri Â
cal *) increase your field of view . RememÂ
ber that vehicles or other objects will apÂ
pear smaller and farther away than when
seen in a flat m irror. If you use this mirror
to estimate distances of following veh icles
when changing lanes, you could estimate incorrectly and cause an accident .

- If you wash the vehicle in an automatic
ca r wash, you must fold the exterior m ir Â
r o rs in to reduce the r isk of damage to
the mirrors .

- The exterior mirror settings are stored

-If there should be a ma lfunct ion in the
electrical system, you can st ill adjust the
exter ior mirrors by press ing the edge of

Electrolyte fluid can leak from automatic
d imm ing mirrors if the glass is broken .
Electrolyte fluid can irr itate skin, eyes and
r espiratory system.
- Repeated or prolonged exposure to e lecÂ
trolyte can cause irritation to the respiraÂ
tory system, especially among people
with asthma or o ther resp ira to ry condiÂ
tions . Get fresh air immediately by leavÂ
ing the vehicle or, if that is no t possib le,
open windows and doors all the way.
- If electroly te gets into the eyes, flush
them thoroughly with large amounts of
clean water for at least 15 minutes; medical attention is recommended.
- If electrolyte contacts skin, fl ush affectÂ
ed area with clean water for at least 15
minutes and then wash affected area
with soap and water; medical attention
is recommended. Thoroughly wash af Â
fected cloth ing and shoes before reuse.

-If swallowed and person is conscious,
rinse mouth with water for at least 15
minutes . Do not induce vomiting unless
instructed to do so by medical professioÂ
nal. Get medical attention immediately.

Liquid electrolyte leaking from broken mirÂ
ror glass will damage any plastic surfaces
it comes in contact with . Clean up spilled
electrolyte immediately with clean water
and a sponge.
@ Tips
- Switching off the dimming function of
the inside rear view mirror also deactiÂ
vates the automatic dimm ing function of
the exterior mirrors .
-Automatic dimming for the mirror only
operates properly if the light striking the
inside mirror is not hindered by other obÂ
jects.
- The automatic dimming mirrors do not
dim when the interior lighting is turned
on or the reverse gear is selected .

Wiper and washer

Move the windshield wiper lever to the correÂ
sponding position:
@-Windshield wiper off
CD-Interval mode . To extend/shorten the
wiper intervals, move the switch @to the
left/right. In vehicles with a rain sensor* the
wipers turn on in the rain once the vehicle
speed exceeds approximately 2 mph (4 km/h) .
The higher the sensitivity of the rain sensor* is
set (switch @to the right), the earlier the
windshield wipers react to moisture on the
windshield. In some models, you can switch
rain sensor mode off and switch intermittent
mode on in the MMI* . Select:
!CAR I function

> Car systems* control button > Driver
assist
> Rain sensor. In intermittent mode,
you can adjust the interval time using the@
switch.
@ -Slow wiping
® -Fast wiping
©-Single wipe
® -Clean the windshield. To eliminate water
droplets, the windshield wiper performs one
afterwipe operation after several seconds
while driving . You can switch this function off
by moving the lever to position ® within 10
seconds of the afterwipe operation. The afterÂ
wipe function is reactivated the next time the
ignition is switched on.

A WARNING
- The ra in sensor is only intended to assist
the driver . The dr iver is still responsible
for manually sw itching the w ipers on acÂ
co rding to the vis ibility conditions .
- The windshie ld may not be treated w it h
water-repe lling windshie ld coat ing
age nts. Unfavorable conditions, such as
wetness , darkness, low sun, can res ult in
incre ase d gla re. Wiper b lade ch atter is
also possible .
- P roperly fu nctioning windshie ld w iper
blades are required for a clear view and
sa fe dr iving

- In the c ase of fro st, check whether the
winds hield wiper blad es are frozen to
the windshie ld. Switching on the wind Â
s h ield wipers can damage the wiper
blades!
- Prior to using a car wash, the win dshield
wipe r system must be switched
off (lever
i n position @). This helps to prevent un Â
i ntent ional sw itchi ng on and damage to
t h e windshie ld w iper system .
- The w indshield wipers are switched
off
when the ignition is turned off . Activate
the windshie ld w ipers afte r the ignit ion
i s sw itched back on by mov ing t he windÂ
s h ield wiper leve r to any pos it io n.
- Worn or dirty windsh ie ld w iper blades
r esult in streaking . T h is can affect the
r ain senso r* function . Ch eck your windÂ
s h ield wiper blades regularly.
- The was her fluid nozzles of the windÂ
s h ield washer system are heated at low
temper atures w hen the ignit ion i s on.
- When stop ping temporarily , (e.g. at a
traff ic light) the se t speed of the wi nd- shield wipers is automatically
reduced by
one s peed.
