The ligh t illu min ates when t he igni tion is switch ­
ed on.
It goes ou t after the engine h as bee n
started . This indicates t hat the brake war ning
light is f unctioning p ro p er ly .
If the brake warning light doe s not light up
when the engine is cranking, there may be a malfunction in the electrical system . In this
case , contact your authorized Audi dealer.

on, there is a br ak e system malfunc tion.

- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety haz ­
ard. Stop the car and get professional ass is­

- If the 1111 (USA models) . (Canada mod­
e ls) brake system indicator light turns on to­
gether with t he ABS and ESC ind icator
lig hts, the ABS/ESC regulat ing funct ion may
have fa iled. Functions that stabilize the ve­
h icl e are no longe r available. This co uld
c a use t he ve hicle to swerve and increas e t he
ris k of s liding. Drive carefu lly to the neares t
author ized Audi dealer or other qualified
wo rkshop and have the malf unct ion co rrect ­
ed.
- If the b rake wa rning/in dicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the pa rk­
ing brake is released, or lights up wh ile you
are driving, the fl uid level in the brake f lu id
rese rvoir is too low. If y ou believe t hat it is
safe to do so, proceed immediately at low
speed to the nea rest authorized A udi dealer
or qualified workshop and have t he b rake
sy stem inspec ted.
- Always keep in min d that after s evera l brak e
a pplicat ions, you wi ll n eed gre ate r pr essure
o n th e br ake pe dal t o s to p you r ve hicle . Do
no t rely on st rained bra kes to respond with
maxim um stop ping power i n cr itica l s itua ­
tions . You must a llow for increased braking
d istances. The extra d istance used up by
fading brakes could lead to an accident .

If the Ji) indica to r li ght blink s while driving, the
E SC or ASR (An ti- Slip Reg ulation) is ac tively regu­
lating.
If t h e DJ indicato r light tur ns on, the system has
sw itche d the ESC off. In th is ca se , you can swi tch
t he ign ition off and then on to swi tch the ESC on
again. The indicator light t urns off when the sys ­
tem is function ing fully.

ABS /(8 ) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warning/indicator light ~ (USA models)/
Ii] (Canada mode ls) will come on for a few sec­
onds when the ignition is sw itched on . T he light
will go out after an automatic check sequence is
completed .
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The war ning/ indicator light does not illum inate
when you sw itch the ignition on.
- The warning/ indicato r light does not go o ut af ­
ter a few seconds.
- The warning/ indicato r light illum inates while
driving.
The ESC in dicator lig ht also illuminates if there is
a malfunction in the ABS. The message
Stabiliza­
tion control (ESC ): Fault! See owner's manual
also appears in the instrument cluster display
and a warn ing tone sounds.

The brake system will still re spond e ven with­
out the a ssistance of the ABS system. See your

Malfunction in the brake system

warning i lluminate together there may be a mal­
function in the ABS, and there may also be a ma l­
function in the brake system itse lf

The EDL works together with the ABS. The ABS
war ning light will come on if there is a malfunc ­
tion in the EDL system

comes on w hile driving, the AB S sys tem is

The memo ry buttons are located in the driver's
door .
Switching the memory function on/off
• Press the !ON/O FF I button to switch the memo­
ry function on/off. The word
OFF lights up when
the memo ry function is switched off . Seat pro­
files are neither stored nor recalled.
Storing a seat profile
• Press the !SE T! button. When the word SET
lights up, the memory is ready to store set­
tings.
• Press a memory button
([I I or ~) briefly . A tone
confirms that the sett ings were stored.
Accessing a seat profile
• If the driver's door is open and the ig nit ion is
switch ed off, press the memory button.
• If the driver's door is closed or the ignition is
switched on, press and hold the memory but­
ton until the seat adjustment is comp lete .
.&_ WARNING
- For safety reasons, the seat sett ing can only
be recalled when the vehicle is stat ionary -
otherwise you risk having an accident .
- In an emergency the recall procedure can be
cancelled by pressing the
!ON/OFF I switch or
by tapping the memory buttons.

• Remove the cigarette lighter when it pops out.
The cigarette lighter should only be used as a
power source for the t ire repair kit when abso­
lutely necessary .

When stopping at a traffic signal or stopp ing in
city traffic on vehicles with an automatic trans­ miss ion, the park ing brake can be applied . The
vehicle does not have to be held with the foot­ brake. The parking brak e eliminates the tendency
to creep with a drive range engaged . As soon as
you dr ive off as usual , the parking brake is re­
leased automatically and the veh icle starts to
move.
Starting on sl opes
When starting on inclines, the start ing ass ist pre­
vents the vehicle from unintentionally rolling back. The braking force of the parking brake is
not released until sufficient driv ing force has
been b uilt up at the whee ls .
@ Tips
For safety reasons, the park ing brake is re­
leased automatically only when the dr iver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake system
fails or locks.

and continue to pull it to slow your vehi­
cle down with the park ing brake.

ate, the braking process stops.
I f you pull the sw itch @and ho ld it above a
speed of about
5 mph (8 k m/ h), the emergen cy
b rak ing func tion is initia ted . The vehicle is braked
at all four wheels by activa ting the hydrau lic
b rake system. The brake pe rformance is s imilar
to making an emergency stop

Dri ving
failed or the bra ke peda l is obstructed. Us ing
the parking brake to perform emergency brak­ i ng will slow your vehicle down as if you had
made a full brake application. The laws of
physics cannot be suspended even with ESC
and its assoc iated components (ABS, ASR,
E DS). In corners and when road o r weather
conditions are bad, a f ull bra ke applica tion
can cause the ve hicl e to skid o r th e rear end to
break away -risking an ac cident.
Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep your
driving speed below a set speed limit.
T he speed warning system warns if the driver ex ­
ceeds a previous ly stored maximum speed . A
warning tone will sound as soon as the veh icle
speed exceeds the set speed by about 3 mph
(3 km/h) . At the same t ime, a warning symbol
appears in the display . The symbol's appearance
mig ht be different in some models .
The speed warn ing system has two warning
t hr esholds that funct ion independent ly of each
othe r and t hat have somewhat d ifferent pu rpos­
es:
Speed wa rning 1
You can use speed warning 1 to set the maximum
speed wh ile you are driving. Th is sett ing will re­
main in effect until you turn off the ign ition, as ­
suming that you have not changed or reset th e
setting.
The . (USA models)/ . (Canada models)
speed warning symbo l in the warn ing 1 disp lay
appears when you exceed the maximum speed .
It
goes out when the spe ed falls be low the stored
ma ximum speed.
The speed warn ing symbol will also go out if the
speed
exceeds the stored maximum speed by
more than about
25 mph (40 km/h) for at least
10 seco nds. The stored maxim um speed is dele t-
ed.

Storing cargo correctly
Loading the luggage compartment
All luggage and other objects must be properly
stowed and secured in the luggage compart ­
ment.

Loose items in the luggage compartment can
shift suddenly, changing vehicle handling charac­
teristics. Loose items can also increase the risk of
serious personal injury in a sudden veh icle ma­
neuver or in a coll is ion.

,.. Always place and p roperly secure heavy items in
the luggage compartment as low and as far for ­
ward as possible

Improperly stored luggage or other items can
fly through the veh icle causing serious per­
sonal injury in the event of ha rd braking or an
accident. To help reduce the r isk of serious
personal injury:
- Always put objects, for examp le, luggage or
other heavy items in the luggage compart­
ment.
- Always secure objects in the luggage com­
partment us ing the tie-down eye lets and
suitable straps.
Dri vin g s afe ty
A WARNING
-Heavy loads wi ll influence the way your vehi-
cle handles . To help reduce the risk of a loss
of control leading to serious personal injury:
- Always keep in mind when transporting
heavy objects, that a change in the center of
grav ity can also cause changes in vehicle
handling:
- Always distribute the load as evenly as
possible .
- Place heavy objects as far forward in the
luggage compartment as possib le .
- Never exceed the Gross Axle We ight Rating
or the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating specified
on the safety compliance s ticker on the left
door jamb. Exceeding permissib le weight
standards can cause the vehicle to slide and
handle differently .
- Please observe information on safe dr iving
¢page 111 .
A WARNING
-To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from
being drawn into the vehicle, always keep the
rear lid closed wh ile driving.
- Never transport objects la rger than those
fitting completely into the luggage area be­
cause the rear lid cannot be fully closed .
- If you absolutely must dr ive with the rear lid
open, observe the following notes to reduce
the risk of poisoning:
- Close all windows,
- Close the s unroof,
- Open all a ir outlets in the ins trumen t pan-
el,
- Switch off the air recirculat ion,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest speed.
A WARNING
-A lways make sure that the doors , all windows,
the sunroof and the rear lid are securely
closed and locked to reduce the risk of injury
when the vehicle is not being used.
- After closing the rear lid, always make sure that it is properly closed and locked.

Why use safety belts?
Frontal collisions and the law of physics
Frontal crashes create very strong forces for peo­
ple riding in vehicles .

~ ± The physical principles are simple. Both the vehi­
cle and the passengers possess energy which var­ ies with vehicle speed and body weight . Engi­
neers call this energy "kinetic energy."
The higher the speed of the vehicle and the
greater the vehicle's weight, the more energy
that has to be "absorbed" in the crash.
Vehicle speed is the most significant factor. If the
speed doubles from 15 to 30 mph (25 to 50 km/
h) , the energy increases 4 times!
Because the passengers of this vehicle are not us­
ing safety belts~
fig. 122, they will keep moving
at the same speed the vehicle was moving just
before the crash, until something stops them -
here, the wall
~fig. 123 .
The same principles apply to people sitting in a
vehicle that is involved in a frontal collision. Even
at city speeds of 20 to 30 mph (30 to 50 km/h),
the forces acting on the body can reach one ton
Safety belts
(2,000 lbs. or 1,000 kg) or more . At greater
speeds, these forces are even higher .
People who do not use safety belts are also not
attached to their vehicle. In a frontal collision
they will also keep moving forward at the speed
their vehicle was travelling just before the crash.
Of course, the laws of physics don't just apply to
frontal collisions, they determ ine what happens
in all kinds of accidents and collisions.
What happens to occupants not wearing
safety belts?
In crashes unbelted occupants cannot stop themselves from flying forward and being in­
jured or killed . Always wear your safety belts!

Unbelted occupants are not able to resist the tre­
mendous forces of impact by holding tight or
bracing themselves . Without the benefit of safe­
ty restraint systems, the unrestrained occupant
will slam v iolently into the steering wheel, in­
strument panel, w indshield, or whatever else is
i n the way~

Safety belts
Never rely on airbags a lone for protection . Even
when they deploy, airbags provide only additional
protection . A irbags are not supposed to deploy in
all kinds of accidents. Although your Audi is
equipped w ith airbags, all vehicle occupants, in­
cluding the driver, must wear safety belts cor ­
rectly in orde r to min imize the risk of seve re in­
jury o r death in a crash .
Remember too, that airbags will deploy only once
and that your safety be lts are a lways there to of ­
fer protection in t hose accidents in which airbags
are not supposed to deploy or when they have a l­
ready deployed . Unbelted o ccupan ts can also be
thrown ou t of the vehicle where even mo re severe
or fata l injur ies can occur .
It is also important fo r the rea r passenge rs to
wear safety belts co rrectly. Unbe lted passenge rs
i n t he rear se ats endanger not only themselves
but also the driver and other passengers

thrown forward violent ly, where they can hit and
in ju re the driver and/or front seat passenger.
Safety belts protect
People think it's possible to use the hands to
brace the body in a minor collision . It 's simply
not true!

Safety belts used properly can make a big differ­
ence. Safety belts help to keep passengers in
their seats , gradually reduce energy levels ap­
plied to the body in an accident, and he lp prevent
the uncont ro lled movement that can cause seri ­
ous injur ies. In add it ion, safety belts reduce the
danger of being throw n ou t of the vehicle.

Safety be lts attach passengers to the car and give
them the benefit of being s lowed down more
gently or "softly" through the "give" in the safety
belts, crush zones and other safety features eng i­
neered into today's veh icles. By "absorbing" the
ki net ic ene rgy over a longer period of time, the
safety be lts make the forces on the body more
"tole rable" and less li kely to cause injury .
Although these examples are based o n a frontal
collision, safety be lts can also substantially re ­
duce the r isk o f injury in other kinds o f crashes.
So, whether you're on a long tr ip or just go ing to
t he cor ne r store, always bu ckle up and ma ke sure
o thers do, too. Ac ciden t sta tis tics show that ve hi­
cle occupants properly wearing sa fe ty belts have
a lowe r risk of be ing injured and a much better
chance of surviving an accident. Pro perly using
safety belts a lso greatly increases the ab ility of
the supp lemental airbags to do their job in a col­
li sion. For this reason, wear ing a safety be lt is le­
gally required in most countries including much
of the United States and Canada .
Although your Audi is equipped with a irbags, you
still have to wear the safety belts provided. Front airbags, for example, are act ivated only in some
fron tal coll is io ns . The front airbags are not act i­
vated in a ll frontal col lisions, in s ide and rear co l­

Description of front airbags
The airbag system can provide supplemental
protection to properly restrained front seat occu­
pants .

Your vehicle is equ ipped with an "Advanced Air­
bag System" in compliance with Un ited States
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard
(FMVSS) 208 as applicab le at the time your veh i­
cle was manufactured. The safety belts for the
seats have "pretensioners" that help to take s lack
out of the belt system . The pretensioners are also
activated by the electronic control unit for the
airbag system .
The front safety belts a lso have load limiters to
help reduce the forces applied to the body in a
crash.

There is a lot you need to know about the airbags
in your vehicle . We urge you to read the detailed
i nformation about airbags, safety belts and child
safety in this and the other chapters that make
up the owner's literature. Please be sure to heed
the WARNINGS -they are extremely important
for your safety and the safety of your passengers, especially infants and small children .

Never rely on airbags alone for protection.
- Even when they deploy, airbags provide only supp lemental protection.
- Airbag work most effectively when used with properly worn safety belts .
- Therefore, always wear your safety be lts and
make sure that everybody in your vehicle is
properly restrained.

A person on the front passenger seat, espe­
cially infants and small ch ild ren, will rece ive
serious i nju ries and can even be killed by be­
ing too close to the airbag when it inf lates .
- Although the Advanced Airbag System in your vehicle is designed to turn off the front passenger airbag if an infant or a sma ll child
is on the front passenger seat, nobody can
absolutely guarantee that deployment un­
der these special condit ions is impossible in
all conceivable situations that may happen
during the useful life of your vehicle .
- The Advanced Airbag System can dep loy in
accordance with the "low risk" option under
the U .S. Federal Standard if a chi ld that is
heav ier than the typical one-year old child is
on the front passenger seat and the other
conditions for airbag deployment are met.
- Accident statistics have shown that ch ildren
are generally safer in the rear seat area than
in the front seating position .
- For their own safety, all children, especially
12 years and younger, sho uld a lways ride in
the back properly restrained for their age
and size .
