- When swit ching the ignition o n, the need les
i n the instrument clus ter swi ng upward
b rief ly .
- The ill umination for the inst rument cluste r
li ghts up whenever you switch on the igni­
tion with the
vehicle headlights off . As the
day light fades, the instrument cluster illu­
mination likewise d ims automatically and
will go out completely whe n the o utside
li ght is very low. This feature is meant to re­
mind you to swi tch on the headlights when
outside light con ditions become poor.

Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coolant gauge ¢ page 10, fig. 3 CD
only works when t he ignition is on. To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the follow­
ing important points :
Engine cold
If the needle is at or close to the bottom o f the
gauge, the engine has not yet reached its operat ­
i ng temperature. Avo id h igh engine speeds,
heavy engine loads, and heavy thrott le applica­
tions .
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operating tem­
perature, the needle will move to the middle of
the ga uge and rema in there. I f the engine is
working hard at hig h outs ide temperatures, t he
needle may move higher on the gauge. This is not
a cause for concern as long as the. warning
li ght i n the inst rumen t cluste r display does no t il­
l u m inat e. If the . warning lig ht in the inst ru­
ment cluster d isp lay flashes, th is can me an one
of two th ings : ei th er the coolan t
temperature is
too h igh, or t he coo lant
level is too low

A WARNING
-Always observe the warning in¢ page 187,
before open ing the hood and check ing the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartment. You
cou ld burn yourself. Let the eng ine cool off
first so that you cannot hear o r see any
steam o r engine coo lant.
0 Note
- Mount ing additional lights or accesso ries in
fron t of the a ir inlets reduces the cooling ef­
fect of the radia to r. A t high outside temper­
atu res or high e ngine load, the eng ine could
overheat.
- The front spo iler has been designed to prop­
erly distribute the cooling air when the veh i­
cle is moving. If the spo iler is damaged, this
could reduce the cooling effect and the en­
gine could then overheat. Ask your author­ ized Audi dealer for assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM (revo­
lutions per minutes).
If engine RPM drops be low 1,5 00, you should
downshift to the next lower gea r. T he red area at
the end of the scale indicates max imum permis­
sible eng ine RPM after the break-in period . Be­
fore reachi ng this area, move the selector lever to
position D/S or ease your foot off the accelerator
pedal.

The tachometer needle@¢ page 10, fig. 3
should o nly briefly be in the red zone: you
co uld damage your eng ine! The beginn ing of
the r ed zone varies depending on the engine.

Upshift ing early saves fuel and reduces eng ine

The lsET j button performs the following func­
t ions:

Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system constantly monitors cer­
tain individual functions and components of the
vehicle when the ignition is turned on and when
the vehicle is moving .
With the ign ition turned on, you can start the
"Auto-Check sequence" by pressing the
I SE TI but­
ton. You can perform an Auto-Check sequence
when the vehicle is sta tionary and the ign it ion is
tu rned on o r whe n th e vehicle is moving slowe r
t h an 3 mph (5 km/ h).
In add ition , the number of keys init ia lised for
your vehicle is disp layed .
L2 3/3 means that
th ree keys have be en initialised. This feature ena­
bles used car buye rs to make sure they have r e­
c e ived all of the keys.
If you are g iven only two keys, for instance, you
should take the vehicle and the existing keys to
an a utho rized Aud i dea le r to have the miss ing key
disabled.
It i s also important to no tify your insur­
ance company abo ut the loss.
Setting the sp eed warning
By pressi ng the !SET ! button briefly, you can set
th reshold 1 of the speed wa rn ing while you are
dr iv ing ¢page 78. By ma intai ning pressure on

~ If the engine oil level is correct and the indica­
tor light still turns on, turn the engine off and
do not continue driving. Seek profess ional as ­
sistance.
(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicator for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, preferably
each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication
Ill
requires oil refill or workshop service with­
out delay. Do not wait until the red oil
pressure warning. starts to flash before
you respond to the low oil level warning
m. By then, your engine may already have
suffered serious damage.

-L Engine cooling system
A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off engine and check coolant level
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears , the coolant temperature is too high or
the coolant level is too low .
~ Pull off the road.
~ Stop the vehicle .
~T urnoff the engine.
~ Check coolant level.
~ Add coolant if necessary¢ page 193 .
~ Continue driving only after the eng ine coolant
warning/indicator light goes out .

~ Contact your authorized Audi dealer for assis­
tance if necessary .
If the engine coolant level is cor rect, then the ra­
diator fan may be the cause o f the malfunction .
A WARNING
--If your vehicle should break down for me­
chanica l or other reasons, park at a safe dis­
tance from moving traffic, turn off the en­
gine and turn on the hazard warn ing lights
¢ page 45, Emergency flashers .
-Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the eng ine
compartment -you risk being scalded . Wait
until you can no longer see or hear steam or
coolant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any vehicle is a
dangerous area. Before you perform any
wo rk in the eng ine compartment, turn of
the engine and allow it to cool. Follow the
warn ing stickers
¢ page 187 .
d) Note
Do not continue dr iv in g if the . symbol illu­
minates. There is a malfunction in the engine
cooling system -you could damage your en­
gine.

• Steering defective! Do not d rive vehicle!
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appea rs, there is an electronic steering column
lock malfunction. You cannot switch the ignition
on .
Do
not tow your vehicle because it cannot be
steered . Seek professiona l assistance.

appears, there is an elec tronic steering column
lock malfunction .
Drive to your authorized Audi dealer immediate ly
to have the malfunction corrected. ..,.

specially conditioned water and the manufactur ­
er's glycol-basedcoolant additive Gl3 antifreeze
with anticorrosion add itives (50% for USA mod­
els ; 60% for Canadian models) . This mixture both
assures the necessary frost protection and pro­
tects metal components in the engine's cooling
system from corrosion and scaling . It also raises
the boiling point of the coolant .
Do not reduce the concentration of the coolant in
the summer by adding pla in water .
The propor ­
ti on of coolant additive mu st be at least 50 %
but n ot more than 60 °/o
to maintain antifreeze
p rotec tion and cooling efficiency . If the coolan t
frost protection is too low, the coolant cou ld
freeze and damage the vehicle heating and en­
gine cooling system.
F or year-round driving, antifreeze is added at the
factory for temperatures dow n to:
- - 31 °F (-35 °C) USA
- - 40 °F ( - 40 °C) Canada .
If you m ust add coolant, use a m ixture of water
and coolant additive. Mixing the coolant additive
with distilled water is recommended.
A WARNING
Before you check anything in the engine com­
partment, always read and heed all WARN­
INGS
~ A in Working in the engine compart­
ment on page 187.
(D Note
- Before winter sets in, have the coolant
checked to see if the coolant additive in your
vehicle is suffic ient to meet the climate con­
dit ions . This is especially important if you
l ive in a region where the winter is ex treme-
l y co ld. I f necessary, increase the proport ion
of coo lant add itive to 60%.
- When adding coolant addit ive to your cool ­
ing system, remember:
- We recommend using only coolant addi­
tive Gl2 ++ or Gl3 for your vehicle. This
coola nt add itive is ava ilable at authorized
Audi dea lers. Other types of ant ifreeze can
significant ly reduce corrosion protection .
Check in g and Fillin g
The resulting corrosion can cause a loss o f
coolant and serious engine damage.
- Do not add any type of rad iator leak sealant
to your vehicle's engine coolant . Adding ra­
diator repair fluid may adverse ly affect the
function and performance of your cooling
system and could result in damage not cov­
ered by your New Vehicle Limited Warranty .

Be very careful when adding engine coolant.

With a cold engine , the coolant level
should be between the ' 'MIN" and "MAX " mark­
ings

warm, the level may be slightly above the
"MAX" marking.

of 1 mm above the MAX marking.
"' Twist the cap on again
tightly .
The location of the coolant expansion tank can be
seen in the engine compartment illustration
¢ page 189.
To obtain an accurate reading , the engine must
be switched off.
The expansion tank in your vehicle is equipped
with an electric coolant level sensor.
When the coolant level is too low, the warning
light in the Auto-Check System¢
page 17 will
blink until you add coolant and the level has been
restored to normal. Even though there is an elec­
tric coolant level sensor, we still recommend you
check the coolant level from time to time.
Coolant loss
Coolant loss may indicate a leak in the cooling
system. In the event of coolant loss, the cooling
system should be inspected immediately by your
authorized Audi dealer. It is not enough merely
to add coolant.
In a
sealed system, losses can occur only if the
boiling point of the coolant is exceeded as a re­
sult of overheating.
Adding coolant
Replacement engine coolant must conform to ex­
act specifications ¢
page 192, Coolant.
We recommend using only coolant additive Gl2+
+ , G l3
or in an emergency Gl2+ . Do not use a
different additive . In an emergency use plain wa­
ter until you can get the correct additive and can

restore the correct ratio. This should be done as
soon as possible.
If you have lost a considerable amount of cool­
ant, then you should add cold antifreeze and cold
water only when the engine is cold.
Always use
new engine coolant when refilling.
Do not fill coolant above the "MAX" mark. Excess
coolant will be forced out through the pressure
relief valve in the cap when the engine becomes
hot.
,&_ WARNING
- The cooling system is under pressure and
can get very hot. Reduce the risk of scalding
from hot coolant by following these steps.
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool
down .
- Protect your face, hands and arms from
escaping fluid and steam by covering the
cap with a large, thick rag .
- Turn the cap slowly and very carefully in a
counter-clockwise direction while applying
light, downward pressure on the top of
the cap .
- To avoid being burned, do not spill anti ­
freeze or coolant on the exhaust system or
hot engine parts. Under certain condi­
tions, the ethylene glycol in engine cool­
ant can catch fire.
- Antifreeze is poisonous. Always store anti­
freeze in its original container and well out
of the reach of children.
- If you drain the coolant, it must be caught
and safely stored in a proper container
clearly marked "poison".
(D Note
- Do not add any type of radiator leak sealant
to your vehicle's engine coolant. Adding ra­
diator repair fluid may adversely affect the
function and performance of your cooling
system and could result in damage not cov­
ered by your New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
- Coolant pollutes the environment and could

forced out through the pressure relief valve
in the cap when the engine becomes hot.
- If, in an emergency, only water can be add­
ed, the correct ratio between water and an­
tifreeze
q page 192 must be restored as
soon as possib le.

Drained coolant should not be reused . Always
dispose of used coolant while observ ing a ll
environmental regulations.
Radiator fan
The radiator fan switches on automatically by it­
self.
The radiator fan is driven by the engine via the V­
be lt. The viscous clutch regulates the speed of
the fan according to the temperature of the cool­
ant.
An auxiliary e lectr ic radiator fan * switches on and
off depending on coo lant temperature and other
veh icle operating conditions.
Afte r you switch the engine off, the a uxiliary fan
can cont inue running for up to 10 minutes -even
with the ignition off. It can even switch on again
l ater by itself

- the temperature of the engine coolant rises due
to the heat bui ld-up from the eng ine in the en­
gine compartment, or
- the engine compartment heats up because the
vehicle is parked in intense sunlight.
_& WARNING
- To reduce the r isk of personal injury never
touch the radiator fan.
- The aux iliary e lectr ic fan is temperature con­
trolled and can switch on suddenly even
when the engine is not running.
- The auxiliary radiator fan switches on auto­
matically when the engine coo lant reaches a
certain temperature and will continue to run
until the coolant temperature drops.

The broke fluid level con be checked with a quick
glance.

., Read the brake fluid level from the brake fluid
reservoir

brake fluid level must be between the "MIN"
and "MAX" markings.
The brake fluid reservo ir is located at the rear
part ition of the engine compartment on the left

The fluid level may drop slightly after some time
due to the automatic adjustment of the brake
pads. This is not cause for alarm.
If the brake fluid level falls
considerably below
the "MIN" mark, the brake warning/indicator
light (U.S. models:
1111 , Canad ian models: .
will come on

ate the vehicl e. The complete brake system
shou ld be thoroughly chec ked by an autho rized
A udi dealer or qualified workshop and the cause
corrected. If the brake fluid level is too low, the
brake warning/indicator light will illuminate .

carried out by vehicle owners .

on the nature of repairs and adjustments to en­
g ine and transmission parts which an owner can
perform.
Maintenance, adjustments and repa irs usua lly re­
qu ire spec ial tools, testing devices and other
equ ipment available to specially trained work­
shop perso nnel in order to assure proper per­
formance, reliab ility and safety of the vehicle and
its many systems.
Improper ma intenance, adjustments and repairs
can impair the operation and reliability of your
vehicle and even void your vehicle warranty .
Therefore, proof of se rv icing in accordance with
the m aintenance schedule may be a condi tion for
upho ld ing a possib le warranty cla im made w ith in
the warranty period .
Above all, operational safety can be adversely af­
fected, creating unnecessary r isks fo r you and
your passengers.
I f in doubt about any servicing, have it done by
your author ized Audi dealer or any prope rly
equ ipped and qua lified workshop. We st rongly
urge you to give your authorized Audi dealer the
opport unity to perform all sched uled mainte­
nance and necessary repairs. Your dealer has the
fac ilities, origina l parts and trained specia lists to
keep yo ur vehicle runn ing properly.
P e rforming lim it e d ma inten anc e y ours elf
The fo llowing pages describe a limited number of
proced ures which can be performed on yo ur vehi­
cle with ordinary tools, should the need arise and
trained personne l be unavailable. Before per­
forming any of these procedures, always thor­
oughly read all of the applicable text and careful­
ly follow the instructions g iven . Always rigorously
observe the
W ARNINGS prov ided .

C o nsum er information
A WARNING
- Ser ious personal injury may occur as a result
of improperly performed maintenance, ad­
justments or repairs.
- Always be extremely careful when work ing
on the vehicle. Always follow commonly ac­
cepted safety practices and general com­ mon sense. Never ris k personal injury.
- Do not attempt any of the maintenance,
checks or repairs descr ibed on the following
pages if you are not fully familia r wi th these
or other procedures w ith respect to the vehi­
cle, or a re unce rtain how to proceed .
- Do not do any work without the proper tools
a nd eq uipment. Have the necessary work
done by your authorized Audi dealer or any
properly equipped and qualified workshop.
- The engine compa rtment o f any motor vehi­
cle is a potentially hazardous area. Neve r
reach into the area around or touch the radi­
ator fan. It is temperature controlled and
can switch on suddenly - even when the en­
g ine is off and the ign ition key has been re­
moved. The rad iator fan switches on auto­
mat ically when the coo lant reaches a certain
temperature and will continue to run unt il
the coolant temperature d rops.
- Always remove the ign ition key befo re any­
one gets under the vehicle.
- Always support your veh icle with safety
stands if it is necessary to work underneath
the vehicle. The jack supplied w ith the vehi ­
cle is no t adequ ate for this purpose and
could collapse caus ing serious personal in­
jury.
- If you m ust wor k underneath t he vehicle
with the wheels on the ground, a lways make
sure the vehicle is on level ground, that the
wheels are a lways secure ly blocked and that
the engine cannot be started.
- Always make sure the transmission se lector
lever (automatic transmiss ion) is in "P"
(Park position) and the park brake is firmly
applied.
