BRAKE /((f) ) Brake system
The ligh t illu min ates when t he igni tion is switch ­
ed on.
It goes ou t after the engine h as bee n
started . This indicates t hat the brake war ning
light is f unctioning p ro p er ly .
If the brake warning light doe s not light up
when the engine is cranking, there may be a malfunction in the electrical system . In this
case , contact your authorized Audi dealer.

A WARNING
-- Always observe the warn ings in

checking the brake flu id.
- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety haz ­
ard. Stop the car and get professional ass is­
tance.
- If the 1111 (USA models) . (Canada mod­
e ls) brake system indicator light turns on to­
gether with t he ABS and ESC ind icator
lig hts, the ABS/ESC regulat ing funct ion may
have fa iled. Functions that stabilize the ve­
h icl e are no longe r available. This co uld
c a use t he ve hicle to swerve and increas e t he
ris k of s liding. Drive carefu lly to the neares t
author ized Audi dealer or other qualified
wo rkshop and have the malf unct ion co rrect ­
ed.
- If the b rake wa rning/in dicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the pa rk­
ing brake is released, or lights up wh ile you
are driving, the fl uid level in the brake f lu id
rese rvoir is too low. If y ou believe t hat it is
safe to do so, proceed immediately at low
speed to the nea rest authorized A udi dealer
or qualified workshop and have t he b rake
sy stem inspec ted.
- Always keep in min d that after s evera l brak e
a pplicat ions, you wi ll n eed gre ate r pr essure
o n th e br ake pe dal t o s to p you r ve hicle . Do
no t rely on st rained bra kes to respond with
maxim um stop ping power i n cr itica l s itua ­
tions . You must a llow for increased braking
d istances. The extra d istance used up by
fading brakes could lead to an accident .

The red engine oil pressure warning symbol re­
quires immediate service or repair. Driving with a
low-oil-pressure indication is likely to inflict se ­
vere damage to the engine .

appe ars, the o il pressure is too low.

tor light still turns on, turn the engine off and
do not continue driving. Seek profess ional as ­
sistance.
(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicator for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, preferably
each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication

requires oil refill or workshop service with­
out delay. Do not wait until the red oil
pressure warning. starts to flash before
you respond to the low oil level warning

• Turn off engine and check coolant level
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears , the coolant temperature is too high or
the coolant level is too low .
~ Pull off the road.

~T urnoff the engine.
~ Check coolant level.
~ Add coolant if necessary¢ page 193 .
~ Continue driving only after the eng ine coolant
warning/indicator light goes out .

tance if necessary .
If the engine coolant level is cor rect, then the ra­
diator fan may be the cause o f the malfunction .
A WARNING
--If your vehicle should break down for me­
chanica l or other reasons, park at a safe dis­
tance from moving traffic, turn off the en­
gine and turn on the hazard warn ing lights
¢ page 45, Emergency flashers .
-Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the eng ine
compartment -you risk being scalded . Wait
until you can no longer see or hear steam or
coolant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any vehicle is a
dangerous area. Before you perform any
wo rk in the eng ine compartment, turn of
the engine and allow it to cool. Follow the
warn ing stickers
¢ page 187 .

minates. There is a malfunction in the engine
cooling system -you could damage your en­

inside an unattended vehicle, v isible or not.
Even a properly locked vehicle cannot pro­
vide the secur ity of a safe.
- If the LED in the upper edge of the driver's
door panel comes on for about 30 seconds
after the vehicle is locked, there is a mal­
funct io n in the power locking or the anti­
theft warning system. Have the malfunction
corrected by an authorized Audi dealersh ip
or qualified repa ir fa cility.

Data in the mast er key

Your Aud i service advise r can read out this data
and te ll you about the work your vehicle needs .
This applies also to vehicles w ith convenience
key*.
Personal comfort settings
If t wo people use one vehicle, it is recommended
that each person always uses "their own" master key. When the ignition is t urned
off or when the
vehicle is locked , persona l convenience settings
for the fo llowing systems are stored and as­
s igned to the remote master key.

T he sto red settings are automa tically recalled
when you unlock the vehicle, when yo u open the
doors or when you turn on the ignition.
A WARNING
- Do not leave your vehicle unattended with
the key in the ignition lock. Entry by unau­
thor ized persons could endanger you or re­
sult in theft or damage the veh icle.
- Do not leave ch ildren unattended in the ve­
h icle, especially with access to vehicle keys .
Ungua rded access to the keys provides chil­
d ren the opportunity to start the engine
a nd /or ac tivate vehicle sys tems su ch as the
power wi ndows etc. Uns upervised oper ation
of any vehicle system by chil dren can result
in serious injury.

Your veh icle is equipped w ith an electromechan i­
cal parking b rake. The par king b rake is designed
to p revent the veh icle from rolling unintentional­
ly and replaces the hand brake.
In addition to the norma l funct ions of a tradit ion­
a l hand bra ke, the e lectromechan ical pa rking
b rake provides var ious convenience and safety
f u nctions.
When start ing f rom rest
- The integral starting assist helps you when
driv ing by automat ically releasing the parking
brake ¢

-When sta rting on inclines , the starting assist
prevents the vehicle from un intent ionally roll­
ing back. The bra kin g for ce of the par kin g b rake
is no t released until sufficien t driv ing fo rce has
been built up at the wheels .
Emergency brake function

A WARNING
If a drive range is eng age d with the vehicle
stationary and the engine running, you mus t
in no instance accelerate careless ly . Otherwise
the vehicle will start to move immed iate ly­
r isk of an accident.

- If the parking brake is applied with the igni ­
tion switched off, the indicator lights in the
switch and -(USA models) . (Cana­
da models) in t he instrument cl uster will go
out after a certa in period of time.

- Occasional noises when the pa rking brake is
applied an d released a re norma l and are not
a cause for concern .
- Whe n the vehicle is pa rked, the park ing
brake goes through a self-test cycle at regu­
lar intervals. Any associated noises are nor­
ma l.
Parking

wheel so that the veh icle will roll into the curb
if it begins to move.
A WARNING
-
- When you leave your vehicle -even if only
briefly - always remove the ignition key. This
applies pa rticularly when children remain in
the vehicle . Otherwise the ch ild ren could
start t he engine, release the parking b rake
or operate elect rical equipment (e.g. power
w indows). There is the risk of an acc ident.
- When the veh icle is locked, no one -part icu­
larly no t chi ld ren shou ld remain in the ve hi­
cle. Lo cked doors m ake it more d ifficul t for
emergency workers to get into the veh icle -
putting lives at risk.
Starting from rest
The star ting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .
Stopping and applying parking brake

Starting and automatically releasing the
parking brake
"' When you sta rt to dr ive as usual, the park ing
bra ke is automatically released and yo ur vehicle
beg ins to move. .,_

Automatic transmission
vehicle when the engine is running, activate
the parking brake and move the selector lev­
er to P.
- Power is still transmitted to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To pre­
vent the vehicle from "creeping", you must
keep your foot on the brake when the engine
is running and the selector lever is in D/S or
R or "tiptronic" mode is selected.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when
changing the selector lever position while
the vehicle is stationary and the engine is
running.
- Never shift into R or P while driving.
- Before driving down a steep slope, reduce
your speed and shift into a lower gear with
"tiptronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases brak­
ing distance or causes complete failure of
the brake system.
- To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it in
place with the brake pedal or parking brake.
- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with a
slipping clutch. The clutch opens automati­
cally when it becomes too hot from the
overload. An indicator lamp

when the clutch is overloaded.
- If the engine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure these­
lector lever has securely engaged and is
locked in P with the parking brake set
¢page 187. Otherwise, any increase in en­
gine speed may set the vehicle in motion,
even with the parking brake applied.
(D Note
-When stopping on an incline, do not try to
hold the vehicle in place by pressing the ac­
celerator pedal while a driving gear is se­
lected. This can cause the transmission to
overheat and can damage it. Activate the

parking brake or press the brake pedal to
prevent the vehicle from rolling.
- Allowing the vehicle to roll when the engine
is stopped and the selector lever is in N will
damage the transmission because it is not
lubricated under those circumstances .
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle .
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the driver
when driving down declines.
Hill descent control is activated when the selec­
tor lever is in D/S and you press the brake pedal.
The transmission automatically selects a gear
that is suitable for the incline. Hill descent con­
trol tries to maintain the speed achieved at the
time of braking, within physical and technical
limitation s.
It may still be necessary to adjust the
speed with the brakes .
Hill descent control switches off once the decline
level s out or you press the accelerator pedal.
On vehicles with the cruise control system*
¢
page 78, hill descent control is also activated
when the speed is set.
A WARNING
Hill descent control cannot overcome physical
limitations, so it may not be able to maintain
a constant speed under all conditions. Always
be ready to apply the brakes.

Automatic transmi ssion
"' Move the selector leve r to the D/S position to
select sport mode (5) or select the
dyn ami c
driv ing mode in drive select* ¢ page 102 .
"'Press the brake peda l strongly with your left
foot and hold it down for at least 1 second.
"' At the same time, press the accelerator pedal
down completely with your right foot until the
engine reaches and maintains a high RPM .

A WARNING
-Always adapt you r driving to the traffic flow.
- Only use the La unch Control P rogram when
road and t raff ic conditions a llow i t and oth­
er drivers wi ll not be endangered or annoye d
by your driving and the veh icle's accelera­
t ion.
- Please note that the driving wheels can spin
and the vehicle can brea k away w hen spo rt
mode is switched on, especially when the
road is slippery.
- Once you have accelerated, yo u should
switch sport mode off
by pressing the
I ~ OF FI button.
(D Tips
- The t ransmission tempe ratu re may inc rease
significantly after using the La unch Control
Program. If that happens, the program may
not be available for a few minutes. It will be
ava ilable again after a coo l-down period .
- When accelerat ing using the Launch Contro l
program, all vehicle pa rts a re subject to
heavy loads. This can result in increased
w ear.
Transmission malfunction
[i1 Transmission : Press brake pedal and sele ct
gear again .
Press the brake pedal and se lect the desi red se­
lecto r leve r pos it ion aga in . You can then continue
d riving.
[O] Transmi ssion overheating: Please drive con­
servativ ely.

turns to the normal range and the indicator light

driving

s ion . You may contin ue driving . Drive to yo ur au­
thorized Audi dea ler or qualified repa ir facility
soon to have the malfunction corrected .
[i1 Transmission malfun ction : Limited driving
functionality
There is a system malfunct ion in the t ransm is­
s io n. The t ransm ission is swi tching to eme rgency
mode. This mode on ly shifts in to cer tain gears or
will no longer shift at al l. The engine may stall.
D rive to your authorized A udi dealer or qualified
repair fac ility immediately to have the mal func ­
tion corrected.
[il ffl Trans mission malfunction: No reverse
You can continue dri ving
There is a system malfunct ion in the t ransm is­
s ion. The t ransm ission is swi tch ing to eme rgency
mode. This mode on ly shifts into certain gears or
will no longer shift at al l. The engine may sta ll.
You cannot engage the reverse gear. Drive to yo ur
authori zed Aud i dea ler or q ualified repa ir facility
i mmediately to have the malfunct ion corrected.

shift to park.

Audi parking system plus provides audio and vis­
