Important safety instructions for using
child safety seats
Correct use of child safety seats substantially
reduces the risk of injury in an accident!
As the driver, you are responsible for the safeÂ
ty of everybody in the vehicle, especially chilÂ
dren:
~ Always use the right child safety seat for
each child and always use it properly
¢ page 171.
~ Always carefully follow the child safety seat
manufacturer's instructions on how to route
the safety belt properly through the child
safety seat.
~ When using the vehicle safety belt to install
a child safety seat, you must first activate
the convertible locking retractor on the
safety belt to prevent the child safety seat
from moving
¢ page 176.
~ Push the child safety seat down with your
full weight to get the safety belt really tight so that the seat cannot move forward or
sideways more than one inch (2.5 cm) .
~ Secure unused safety belts on the rear seat
¢page 171.
Always remember: Even though your vehicle is
equipped with an Advanced Airbag system, all
children, especially those 12 years and youngÂ
er, should always ride in the back seat properÂ
ly restrained for their age and size.

Not using a child safety seat, using the
wrong child safety seat or improperly in stalling a child restraint increases the risk
of serious personal injury and death.

- All vehicle occupants and especially chilÂ
dren must always be restrained properly
whenever riding in a vehicle.
- An unrestrained or improperly restrainÂ
ed child can be injured or killed by beÂ
ing thrown against the inside of the veÂ
hicle or by being ejected from it during
a sudden maneuver or impact.
- An unrestrained or improperly restrainÂ
ed child is at much greater risk of injury
or death by being struck by an inflating
airbag.
- Commercially available child safety seats
are required to comply with U.S. Federal
Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS)
213 (in Canada CMVSS 213).
- When buying a child restraint, select
one that fits your child and the vehicle.
- Only use child restraint systems that
fully contact the flat portion of the
seat cushion. The child restraint must not tip or lean to either side. Audi does
not recommend using child safety
seats that rest on legs or tube •like
frames. They do not provide adequate
contact with the seat.
- Always heed all legal requirements perÂ
taining to the installation and use of
child safety seats and carefully follow
the instructions provided by the manuÂ
facturer of the seat you are using.
- Never allow children under 57 inches
(1.45 meters) to wear a normal safety
belt. They must always be restrained by a
proper child restraint system. Otherwise,
they could sustain injuries to the abdoÂ
men and neck areas during sudden brakÂ
ing maneuvers or accidents.
- Never let more than one child occupy a
child safety seat.
- Never let babies or older children ride in
a vehicle while sitting on the lap of anÂ
other passenger.
- Holding a child in your arms is never a
substitute for a child restraint system .
- The strongest person could not hold
the child with the forces that exist in

Infant seats
Babies and infants up to about one year old
and 20 lbs. or 9 kg need special rearward-facÂ
ing child restraints that support the back,
neck and head in a crash.

Infants up to about one year (20 lbs. or 9 kg)
are best protected in spec ial infant carriers
and child safety seats designed for their age
group . Many experts believe that infants and
small ch ildren shou ld r ide on ly in special reÂ
stra in ts in wh ich the child fa ces the back of
the vehi cle. These infant sea ts support the baÂ
by 's back, neck and head in a crash ¢
fig. 170 .
The airbag on the passenger side makes the
front seat a potentia lly dange rous place for a
ch ild to ride. The front seat is not the safest
place for a child in a fo rward-facing child seat.
It is a very dangerous place for an infant or a
larger child in a rearward-facing seat. .,._

Children up to at leas t 8 years old (over 40 lbs
or 18 kg) are best protected in chi ld safety
seats designed for their age and weight . ExÂ
perts say that the ske letal structure, particuÂ
larly the pelvis, of these chi ldren is not fu lly
developed, and they must not use the vehicle
safety belts without a su itable child restraint.
It is usually best to put these children in apÂ
propriate booster seats. Be sure the booster
seat meets all applicable safety standards .
Booster seats raise the seating position of the
chi ld and reposition both the lap and shou lder
parts of the safety belt so that they pass
across the child 's body in the right places. The
routing of the belt over the child's body is very
important for the ch ild's protection, whether
or not a booste r seat is used . Children age 12
and under must always ride in the rear seat.
C hi ldren who are at least 4
ft. 9 in. (57 inÂ
ches/1.45 meters) tall can generally use the
vehicle's three po int lap and shoulder belts .
Never use the lap belt portion of the veh icle's
safety be lt a lone to restrain any child, regardÂ
l ess of how b ig the child is. Always remembe r
that children do not have the pronounced pe lÂ
vic structure required for the proper function
of lap belt portion of the ve hicle's three point
l ap and shoulder be lts. The child's safety abÂ
solutely requ ires that a lap be lt portion of the
safety belt be fastened snugly and as low as
possible around the pelvis. Never let the lap
be lt portion of the safety belt pass over the
child's stomach or abdomen.
In a cras h, airbags must i nflate within a blink
of an eye and with cons iderable force. In orde r
to do i ts job, the airbag needs room to inflate
so that it will be there to p rotect the o ccupant
as the occupant moves forward into the airÂ
bag.
A vehicle occupant who is out of pos ition and
too close to the airbag gets i n the way of an
inflat ing a irbag. When an occupant is too
close, he or she w ill be str uck violen tly and

will receive se rious or possib ly even fatal in Â
jury .
In orde r fo r the airbag to offer pro te ction, i t is
important tha t all veh icle occupants, espec ialÂ
ly any children, who m ust be in the front seat
because of exceptiona l circumstances, be
properly restrained and as far away from the
airbag as possible . By keeping room between
the child's body and the front of the passenÂ
ger compartment, the a irbag can inflate com Â
pletely and provide supplemental protection
in certain frontal collisions .
_&. WARNING
Not using a booste r seat, using the boosÂ
ter se at imp roperly, incorrectly installing a
boos ter sea t or using the vehicle safety
belt imp roperly increases the risk of seriÂ
ous persona l injury and death in a collision
or other emergency situat ion. To he lp reÂ
duce the risk of serious personal injury
and/or death:
- The shou lder belt must lie as close to the
center of the ch ild's collar bone as possiÂ
ble and must lie f lat and snug on the upÂ
per body . It must never lie across the
throat or neck . The lap belt must lie
across the pelvis and neve r across the
s tom ach o r abd omen. Make sure that the
be lt lies flat and sn ug. Pull on the bel t to
tighten if necessary.
- Failure to p roperly ro ute safety belts
over a child's body will ca use seve re inj uÂ
ries in an accident or othe r emergency
situation

-The rear side o f the child sa fety seat
should be pos itioned as close as possib le
to the backrest on the vehicle seat.
- For adj ustab le head restraints: adjust or
remove the rea r seat head restraint if it
is difficult to install the child seat w ith
the head restraint in place

seat, for example the front seat.
- Never let a child ride in the cargo area of
your vehicle.
- Always remember that a chi ld leaning
forward, sitt ing s ideways or out of posiÂ
t ion in any way during an acc ident can be
struck by a deploying airbag . This will reÂ
sult in serious personal injury or dea th .
- If you must install a booster seat on the
front passenger seat because of excep Â
t ional circumstances the

Installing a child safety
seat
Securing a child safety seat using a
safety belt
Safety belts for the rear seats and the front
passenger can be locked with the conver tible
locking retractor to properly secure child
safety seats.
The safety belts emergency locking retractors
f or the rear seats safe ty belts and for the fron
t passenger's seat safety be lt have a con Â
vertib le locking ret ractor for child restraints .
The safety belt m ust be locked so that be lt
webbing cannot unreel. The retractor can be activated to lock the safety belt and prevent
the safety belt webbing from looseni ng up
duri ng normal dr iv ing. A child safety seat can
o nl y be prope rly insta lled when the safety be lt
i s lo cked so that t he ch ild and child safety
sea t w ill stay in place .
Always remember : Even though your vehicle is
equipped with an Advanced Airbag system, all
c hi ld ren, especially those 1 2 years and youngÂ
er, sho uld always r ide in the back seat prope rÂ
l y restra ined for the ir age and size.

I mproperly installed chi ld safety seats in Â
crease the risk of serious pe rsonal in jury
and death in a co llision.
- Always make s ure that the safety belt reÂ
tracto r is locked when insta lling a child
safety seat. An un locked safety belt reÂ
tractor cannot hold the child safety seat
in place dur ing no rma l driving o r in a
crash .
- Always buckle the child safety seat firmly
in place even if a ch ild is not sitt ing in it .
A loose child safety seat can fly arou nd
du ring a sudden stop or in a collision.
- If the rea r set backrest is not secure ly
latched, the ch ild and the child restra int
will be throw n forwa rd togethe r with the
backrest a nd wi ll str ike par ts of t he ve hiÂ
cle interior. The chil d can be ser iously inÂ
ju red or killed.
- N ever inst all re ar- fa cing child safety
seats or in fant c arriers on the front pasÂ
sen ger seat . A child will be serious ly in Â
jured and can be killed whe n the passen Â
ge r airbag in flates.
- The inflating air bag will h it the c hild
safety seat or infant carrie r with great
force and will smash the child safety seat
and child aga inst t he backrest, center
armrest, door or roof.

child safety seat on the rear seat .

must install a forward or rearward-facing
child restraint on the front passenger's
seat in exceptional situations:
- Whenever a forward or rearward-facing
child restraint is installed on the front
passenger seat, the

light must come on and stay on
whenever the ignition is switched on.
- If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
does not come on and stay on, perform
the checks described

- An improperly installed child restraint
can interfere with the airbag as it deÂ
ploys and seriously injure or even kill the
child.
- Always carefully follow the manufacturÂ
er's instructions provided with the child
safety seat or carrier.

- After checking to make sure that the
child restraint is properly installed, make
certain that the child restraint is correct ly recognized by the capacitive passenger
detection system in the front passenger
seat and that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light signals the correct front pasÂ
senger frontal airbag status .
_& WARNING
Forward-facing child restraints:
- Always make sure the forward-facing
seat has been designed and certified by
its manufacturer for use on a front seat
with a passenger front and side airbag.
- Never put the forward-facing child reÂ
straint up, against or very near the inÂ
strument panel.
- Always move the passenger seat into its
rearmost position in the seat's fore and
aft adjustment range, as far away from
the airbag as possible before installing
the forward-facing child restraint. The
backrest must be adjusted to an upright
position .
- Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on and stays on all the
time whenever the ignition is switched
on.
_& WARNING
Rearward-facing child restraints:
- A child in a rearward-facing child safety
seat installed on the front passenger
seat will be seriously injured and can be killed if the front airbag inflates - even
with an Advanced Airbag System .
- The inflating airbag will hit the child
safety seat or infant carrier with great
force and will smash the child safety seat
and child against the backrest, center
armrest, door or roof.
-Always be especially careful if you must
install a rearward facing child safety seat
on the front passenger seat in exception-

If you leave the child restraint with the
tether strap firmly insta lled for severa l
days, this cou ld leave a mark on the upÂ
holstery on the seat cushion and backrest
in the area where the tether strap was inÂ
stalled. The upholstery would a lso be perÂ
manently stretched around the tether
strap. This applies especially to leat her
seats.
Using tether straps on rearward-facing
child restraints
Currently, few rear-facing child restraint sysÂ
tems come with a tether. P lease read and
heed the child restraint system manufacturÂ
er's instructions carefully to determine how to
properly install the tether.
A WARNING
-
A child in a rearward-facing child safety
seat insta lled on the front passenge r seat
w ill be se riously injured and can be killed if
t he fron t air bag inflates - even with an AdÂ
vanced Airbag System .
- T he inf lat ing airb ag w ill hit the child
sa fety seat or infant carrier w it h great
force and w ill smash the ch ild safety seat
and child against the backrest, center
armrest, or door.
- If you must install a rearward facing
child safety seat on the front passenger
seat because of exceptional circ umstanÂ
ces and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light does not come on and stay on, imÂ
med iately install the rear-facing child
safety seat in a rear seating position and
have t he a irbag system inspected by you r

Anti-slip regulation (ASR )
ASR reduces engine power when the drive
wheels begin to spin and adapts the force to
the road conditions. This makes it easier to
start, accelerat e and drive up hills .
Electronic differential lock (EDL )
The ED L brakes wheels that are spinn ing and
transfers the drive powe r to the o ther wheels.
This function is not availab le at higher speeds.
I n extreme cases , ED L automat ica lly switches
off to help keep the brake on the braked whee l
from ove rheating. EDL wi ll sw itch on aga in auÂ
tomatically when conditions have returned to
norma l.
Steering recommendation
The ESC helps to stabilize the ve hicle by
changing the steering to rque.
In vehicles with dynam ic steering*, ESC also
he lps to stabilize the stee ring in critical s ituaÂ
tions.
Selective wheel torque control
Selective wheel torque control is used when
driving on curves . The front wheel on the inÂ
side of the curve o r both wheels on the inside
of the curve are braked selective ly as needed.
This a llows more prec ise driving in curves. The
appl icable system may no t activ ate when drivÂ
ing in wet or snowy condi tions .
A WARNING
- The ESC and its integrated systems canÂ
not overcome the lim its posed by natural
physical laws. This is especia lly impor- tant on slippery or wet roads
. If the sysÂ
tems beg in acting to stabilize your vehiÂ
cle, you should immediately change your
speed to match the road and traffic conÂ
ditions . Do not let the increased safety
provided by these systems tempt you to
take risks. Do ing so will increase the risk
of a loss of veh icle contro l, collision and
serio us pe rsonal inj uries.
- Always ad apt your speed to road, traffic
a nd wea ther conditions. The risk of losÂ
ing con trol of the vehicle increases when
driving too fast, especially through
curves and on slippe ry or wet roads, and
when dr iv ing too close to vehicles up
ahead . The ESC and its integrated sysÂ
tems cannot a lways prevent collisions -
there is still a risk of acc idents!
- Always accelerate with special care on
even, smooth su rfaces such as those that
are wet or covered with ice and snow.
The drive wheels can spin even w ith
these assistan ce sys tems that cannot alÂ
ways he lp to re duce the risk of loss of veÂ
h icle control.

- ABS and ASR o nly wo rk correctly when
all four wheel s are equipped with identiÂ
c al tires . D iffe ren t tire sizes can lead to a
reduction in engine power.
- Yo u may hear noises when the systems

ESC turns on automatically when you start the engine .

The ESC is designed to function in levels. DeÂ
pending on the leve l that is selected, the sta-

trol will differ depending on the level.
The following situations are exceptions where it may be useful to switch on sport mode to
allow the wheels to spin:
- Rocking the vehicle to free it when it is st uck

and road conditions perm it.
- The stabilization function is limited
when sport mode is switched on. The
driv ing whee ls could spin and the vehicle
cou ld swe rve, especially on slick or slipÂ
pery road surfaces.

ESC/ASR are switched off.

Rear spoiler
The rear spoiler improves vehicle handling
and enhances driver control.

The rear spoiler deploys and retracts. Spoiler
operation can be set for automatic or manual
operat ion.
Automatic mode (normal operation)
-Automatic deployment: At a speed of about
80 mph (130 km/h), the rear spoiler deploys
automatically.
- Automatic retraction: When speed drops beÂ
low about SO mph (80 km/h), the rear spoilÂ
er retracts automatically.
Manual mode
- Manual deployment: Tapping briefly on the
switch
c:> fig. 181 deploys the rear spoiler .
- Manual retraction: At speeds up to about
10 mph (20 km/h), retract the rear spoiler
by pressing and holding the switch
c:> fig. 181 . At speeds between 10 mph (20
km/h) and 80 mph (130 km/h), retract the
rear spoiler by tapping on the switch

Indicator lights
I)/. Rear spoiler: system malfunction!
The rear spoiler may not have extended due to
a malfunction. This could change the vehicle's
driving characteristics at high speeds. Do not
exceed 85 mph (140 km/h). Drive to your auÂ
thorized Audi dealer immed iately to have the
malfunction corrected . The co lor of the indicaÂ
tor light depends on the veh icle speed.
A WARNING
-Driving at higher speeds without the rear
spoiler deployed can impair handling charÂ
acteristics, making the vehicle harder to
control.
-Always make sure that the spo iler is deÂ
p loyed when driving at speeds over

warn ing/ indicator light in the instruÂ
ment cluster comes on, the rear spoiler
may not have deployed.
- Never drive at speeds higher than
85 mph (140 km/h) if the spoiler is not
deployed. Have the spoiler inspected as
soon as possible by an authorized Audi
dealer or qualified workshop.
- Always obey speed limits and other trafÂ
fic laws.
A WARNING
Improper operation of the rear spoi ler can
cause crushing injuries.
- Always make sure that nobody, especially
children, is in the way when the rear
spoiler is deployed or retracted.

- Never push the vehicle or apply force to
the rear spoiler -it could be damaged.
- To prevent damage to the rear spo iler do
not lean or place anything on it.
- Only operate the rear spoiler manually
when the rear lid is closed and the rear
spoiler moving parts are not blocked. Otherwise, damage cou ld occur.

Clean the spoiler compartment every 2 to
3 months. The spoiler compartment must
always be free of ice, snow, leaves or other
debris.

Battery d iagnosis continuously dete rm ines
the state of the battery. Sensors determ ine
battery vo ltage, battery current and battery
temperature. This determines the current
state of charge and the power of the battery.
Idling curr ent mana gem ent
Idling c urrent management reduces energy
consumption while the vehicle is standing.
With the ignition switched off, it contro ls the
energy s upply to the various e lectrica l compoÂ
nents . Data from battery diagnosis is considÂ
ered.
D epending on the battery's state of charge,
individual consumers are gradually turned off
to prevent excess ive d ischarge of the battery
and thus mainta in start ing capability.
Dynamic en erg y managem ent
While the vehicle is being dr iven, dynamic en Â
ergy management distributes the energy genÂ
erated according to the needs of the individuÂ
a l components. It reg ulates cons umption, so
that more electrical energy is not being used
than is being generated and ensures an optiÂ
mal state of charge for the battery.

- But even energy management cannot
negate the limits of physics. Consider
that the power and life of a battery are

What you should know
The highest priority is given to maintaining
starting capability.
The battery is severely taxed in short-distance
driving, in city traffic and during the co ld time
of year. Abu ndant e lectr ical energy is re- quired, but on
ly a little is generated .
It is also
critica l if the engine is not r unning and electriÂ
ca l components are turned on. In this inÂ
stance energy is be ing consumed but none is
being generated .
It is in precise ly these situations that you will
notice energy management active ly regu latÂ
ing the d istribution of energy.
V ehicle stand s for an e xtended period
If you do no t drive your vehicle over a period
of several days or weeks, e lectrica l compo Â
nents a re g radually cut back or switched off .
This reduces energy consumption and mainÂ
ta ins start ing capability over a longer period .
Some of the convenience functions may not
operate, such as the interior l ights or the
power seat adjustme nt. The convenience
funct ions wi ll be available again when you
switch on the ignition and sta rt the eng ine .
With the engine turned off
If you listen to the radio, for examp le, w ith
the engine turned off or use other MMI funcÂ
t io ns, the battery is be ing discharged .
If starting capability is jeopardized d ue to enÂ
ergy consumption, the following warning apÂ
pears in the MMI d isplay:
Please sta rt the engine soon o r the system
will be turned off .
The warning indicates that the system will be
turned off automatically after 3 minutes . If
you w ish to continue using the funct ions, yo u
have to start the eng ine.
With the eng ine running
Although e lectrical energy is generated when
t h e vehicle is being driven, the battery can beÂ
come discharged . This happens mostly when
li ttle energy is being generated and a great
deal consumed and the battery's state of
c h arge is not opt imal.
To bring the energy ba lance back into equili Â
brium, consumers which requ ire espec ially
large amounts of energy are temporar ily cut
