The instrument illumination for the needles
and dials turns on when the ignition is turned
on and the lights are turned off. The illumina ­
tion for the dial s reduces automatically and
eventually turns off as brightness outside in­
creases. This function reminds the driver to
turn the headlights on at the appropriate
time.
Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coo lant gauge (D ¢ page 10, fig. 3
only works when the ignition is on. To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the follow­
ing important points:

Engine cold

If only the LEDs at the bottom of the gauge turn
on, the engine has not reached operating tem­
perature yet. Avoid high engine speeds, heavy en­
gine loads and heavy throttle applications .
Normal temperature
The engine has reached its operating tempera­
ture once the L EDs up to the center of the gauge
turn on under normal driving conditions . The
LEDs higher up may turn on when the engine is
under heavy load or the exterior temperature is
high . This is no need to worry as long as the.
warning light in the instrument cluster does not
ill uminate.
If the LE Ds in the upper area of the
display and the indicator light. in the instru­
ment cluster display turn on, the coolant temper­
ature is too high

-Always observe the warning in¢ page 203,
before opening the hood and checking the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dripping from the engine compartment . You ..,.

first until you can no longer see or hear
steam or coolant escaping .
0 Note
- Mounting additional lights or accessories in
front of the air inlets reduces the cooling ef­
fect of the radiator. At h igh outside temper­
atures or high engine load, the engine could
overheat .
- The front spoiler has been designed to prop­
erly distribute the cooling air when the veh i­
cle is moving . If the spoiler is damaged, this
could red uce the cooling effect and the en­
gine could then overheat. Ask your author­
iz ed Audi dealer for assistance.
Tachometer
The tachometer displays the engine speed in rev­
olutions per minute (RPM).
You should shift to the next lowest gear when
the speed is below 1500 RPM . The beginning of
the red zone in the tachometer indicates the
maximum permissib le engine speed for all gea rs
once the engine has been broke n in. Before
reaching the red zone, you should shift into the
next higher gear, choose the Dor 5 selector lever
position , or remove your foot from the accelera­
tor pedal.

may only be in the red area of the gauge
for a short time or there is a risk of engine
damage. The beginning of the red range in
the gauge depends on the engine operating
tern perature.

Upshifting early helps you to save fuel and re­
duce operating noise.

The engine speed is limited when the engine
is cold - the full engine output is not availa­
ble. When the engine is at operating temper-

ature, the red area in the tachometer moves
to a higher RPM range.
Fuel level
The fuel gauge only works when the ignition is
on. If the fuel level drops below 2.6 gallons (10
liters), the bottom LED turns red and the indica­
tor light
tD turns on Q page 20. The bottom
LED blinks red when the fuel level is very low .
The possible range based on the current fuel lev­
el is shown in tab@¢
page 22, fig. 4.

page 260.

Never drive until the tank is comp letely emp­
ty. The irregu lar supply of fuel that resu lts
from that can cause the engine to misfire. Un­
combusted fuel w ill then enter the exhaust
system. This can cause overheating and dam­
age to the catalytic converter .
Indicator lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instr ument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate functions or mal­
funct ions ¢& .
Messages may appear with some indicator lights .
A warning signal will sound at the same time.
The indicator lights and messages in the center of the displays may be replaced by other disp lays.
To show them again, select the tab for indicator
lights and messages using the multifunction
stee ring wheel ¢
page 22. If there are several
malfunctions, you can display them one at a time
using the thumbwheel.
Some indicato rs lights in the d isplay can turn on
in several colors .

- Failure to heed warning lights and other im­
portant vehicle information may result in
serious personal injury or vehicle damage.

-Whenever stalled or stopped for repair,
move the vehicle a safe distance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on the
emergency flasher

- The engine compartment of any motor vehi­
cle is a potentially hazardous area. Before
you check anything in the engine compart­
ment, stop the engine and let it cool down.
Always exercise extreme caution when work­
ing under the hood

Overview
Some indicator lights turn on briefly to check the
function of that system when you switch the igni­
tion on. These systems are marked with a../ in
the following tables. If one of these indicator
lights does not turn on, there is a malfunction in
that system.

lights, the ABS/ESC regu lating function may
have fa iled . Functions that stabilize the ve ­
hicle are no longer available . Th is could
cause the vehicle to swerve and increase the ris k of sliding . Stop the car and get profes­
sional ass is tance.
- If the brake warning/indicator ligh t does
not go out afte r a few seconds and the par k­
ing brake i5 relea5ed, or light5 up wh ile you
are driving, the fluid level in the brake fluid
reservoir is too low. If yo u be lieve that it is
safe to do so, proceed immediately at low
speed to the nearest authorized Audi dealer
or qualif ied repa ir facility and have the
brake system inspected.
- Always keep in m ind that after several brake
applications, you w ill need greater pressure
on the b rake pedal to stop your veh icle . Do
not rely on strained brakes to respond with
maximum stopp ing power in cr itical s itua­
tions. You must a llow for increased brak ing
distances. The extra dist ance used up by
fading bra kes co uld lead to an accident.

an indicator for a low engine oil level. Do not rely on it . Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals , preferably
each time you refuel , and always before

- The yellow oil level warning indication

requires oil refill or workshop service with­
out delay. Do not wait until the red oil
pressure warning. starts to flash before
you respond to the low oil level warning

can lead to vehi cle damage .

The II (USA models)/ E,I (C anad a models) ind i­
cator lig ht monitors the s afety sys tems (e.g . a ir­
bags, pretensione rs) and illumina tes fo r a few
secon ds each time you switc h the ignition on .
If the II (USA mo dels) !E,I (Canada mode ls) in­
di cator light does not go ou t, o r if it ill umin ates
wh ile you are dr iv ing, or if it star ts to b link, then
t h ere is a malfunct io n somewhere in the system.
If the light does not illum inate when yo u switc h
the ignit ion on, this a lso means there is a mal­
funct ion.

t e ms, con tact your au tho rized Aud i dealer im ­
m ediately . Ot herwise the safety systems may

& Brake booster

;;Jf; Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC)
If the m indicator light blinks while driving, the
E SP or ASR (anti-slip regulation) is actively regu­
lating.
I f the
liJ indicator light turns on, the system has
sw itched the ESC off . In this case, you can switch
the ignition off and then on to switch the ESC on
again. The indicator light turns off when the sys­
tem is functioning fully.
If the
II indicator light turns on, ESC was
switched off using the
I ~ OFFI button

Stabilization control (ESC/ ABS) malfunction!

If the liJ indica to r light and the ABS indicator
lig ht ~ (USA models)

turn on and the message appears, the ABS or
electronic differential lock is malfunctioning .
This a lso causes the ESC to malfunct ion. The
brakes still function w ith their norma l power, but
ABS is not active .

ized Audi Service Fac ility to have the malfunction
corrected.
A WARNING
If the 1111 (USA models) ,111 (Canada mod­
els) brake system indicator light turns on to­
gether with the ABS and ESC indicator lights,
the ABS/ESC regulating funct ion may have
failed. Functions that stabilize the vehicle are
no longer available. This could cause the vehi­
cle to swerve and increase the risk of sliding.
Drive carefully to the nearest authorized Audi
dealer or other qualified wor kshop and have
the malfunction corrected.

ABS/( @) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL) .
The warning/indicator lig ht fJ] (USA models)/
ti] (Cana da models) wi ll come on for a few sec ­
onds when the ignition is switched on. The light
will go out after an a utomatic check sequence is
completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
- The war ning/ indicator light does not illuminate
when you switch the ignition on.
- The war ning/ indica tor light does not go out af­
ter a few seconds.
- The war ning/indica tor light illuminates while
driving.
The ESC indi cator lig ht also illum inates if there is
a malfunction in the ABS. The message Stabiliza•
tion control (ESC/ABS): Fault! See owner's
manual
also appears in the inst rument cl uste r
display and a warn ing tone sounds .
The brake system will still respond even with­
out the assistance of the ABS system. See your
authorized Audi dealer as soon as possible to re­
store full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system

together there may be a mal­
function in the ABS, and there may also be a mal ­
funct ion in the brake system itself¢&. .
The ABS
will not work and you will notice a change in
braking response and performance.
