The first 1,000 miles (1,500 km) and afterwards

The engine needs to be run-in during the first 1,000 miles
(1,500 km).

Do not use full throttle.
- Do not drive faster than 3/4 of the top speed marked on
the speedometer.
- Avoid high engine speeds .
From 600 t o 1,000 mil es (1,000 t o 1,500

- Speeds can gradually be increased to t he maximum
permiss ible road or engine speed .

- Do not rev the engine up to high speeds when it is cold. This applies whether the transm ission is in N (Neutral) or
1n gear.

During the first few hours of driving, the eng ine's internal friction is
higher than later when all the moving parts have been broken in.
How well this break -in process is done depends to a considerable
extent on the way the vehicle is driven during the first 1,000 miles
(1,500 ki lometers).

Extreme ly high engine speeds are automatically reduced. However,
these RPM -limits were programmed for an engine we ll run-in, not a
new engine .
~ For the sake of the environment
Do not drive with unnecessarily high engine speeds -upshifting
early saves fuel, reduces noise and protects the environment .
New tires
If your v ehic le is running on new tires, driv e particularly
carefu l for the first 300 miles (500 ki lometers) after fitting.

New brake pa_ds
Remember that new brake pads do not have a full braking
effect during the first 250 miles (400 kilometers) after they
are installed.
New brake pads have to be "burnished in" before they have optimal
grab =>& .
During the break -in period, you should avoid putting severe loads
on the brakes . Severe loads include, for example, sudden hard
braking, in particular at very high speeds or, for example, on moun
tain passes .
& WARNING
Until they develop the maximum "bite" for best stopping power,
the surfaces on new brake pads require some "breaking-in" during
the initial 100 to 150 miles (150 to 200 kilometers) of normal city
driving. You can compensate for this by pressing the brake pedal
more firmly. This applies whenever new pads are installed. •
Driving through water on roads
Note the following to avoid vehicle damage when driving through
water, for example on flooded roads:
• The water must not be any higher than the bottom of the vehicle
body .
• Do not drive faster than walking speed .
& WARNING
After driving through water, mud, slush, etc., the brakes may be
slow to take effect because of wet brake rotors and pads. Dry the
brakes first by braking carefully to restore the full braking effect .

Vehicle components such as the engine, transmission , suspension
or electrical system can be severely damaged by driving through
water .
[ i] Tips
• Check the depth of the water before driving through it .
• Do not stop th e vehicle, drive in reverse or switch the engine off
when driving through water.
• Keep in mind that oncoming vehicles may create waves that
raise the water level and make it too deep for your vehicle to drive
through safely.
• Avoid driving through salt water because it can cause
corrosion. •
Catalytic converter
It is very important that your emission control system
(catalytic converter) is functioning properly to ensure that
your vehicle is running in an environmentally sound
manner .
- Always use lead-free gasoline~ page 217, "Fuel supply".
- Never run the tank down all the way to empty.
- Never put too much motor oil in your engine ~ page
230,

- Never try to push -or tow -start your vehicle.
Th e ca taly tic conv ert er is an ef ficient "clean-up " device built into the
exhaust system of the vehicle . The catalytic converter burns many
of the pollutants in the exhaust gas before they are released into the
atmosphere. •

The exclusive use of unleaded fuel is critically important for the life
of the catalytic converter and proper functioning of the engine.
& WARNING
• Do not park or operate the vehicle in areas where the hot
exhaust system may come in contact with dry grass, brush, fuel
spill or other material which can cause a fire.
• Do not apply additional undercoating or rustproofing on or
near the exhaust manifold, exhaust pipes, catalytic converter or
heat shields . During driving, the substance used for undercoating
could overheat and cause a fire.

• Be aware that just one tank filling with leaded fuel will already
seriously degrade the performance of the catalytic converter.
• Do not exceed the correct engine oil level~
page 230.
• Do not drive until the fuel tank becomes completely empty. The
engine could misfire. Unburned fuel could also get into the exhaust
system and this could cause the catalytic converter to overheat.
• Do not turn off the ignition while the vehicle is moving.
• Do not continue to operate your vehicle under these conditions,
as otherwise fuel can reach the catalytic converter. This could result
in overheating of the converter, requiring its replacement.
• To assure efficient operation of the Emission Control System :
- Have your vehicle maintained properly and in accordance with
the service recommendations in your Warranty

booklet.
- Lack of proper maintenance as well as improper use of the
vehicle will impair the function of the emission control system
and could lead to damage.

<£' For the sake of the environment
Even
when the Emission Control System is operating properly, the
exhaust gas can have a sulfur -like exhaust gas smell under some
operating states . This depends on the sulfur content of the fuel
being used . Using a different brand of fuel may help, or filling the
tank with lead-free super grade gasoline. •
Applies to veh ic les : with diesel particulate filter
Diesel particu ate filter
The diesel particulate filter filters nearly all of the soot particles out
of the exhaust. The filter cleans itself automatically under normal
driving conditions. If the filter cannot clean itself (for example,
because you are only driving short distances), the filter becomes
clogged with soot and the symbol for the diesel particulate filter
illuminates ~
page 32.
& WARNING
• Do not park your vehicle over flammable materials such as
grass or leaves because the high temperature of the diesel partic
ulate filter could start a fire.
• Do not apply an underbody protectant in the exhaust system
area or a fire could start.
[ i] Tips
• When the diesel particulate filter becomes saturated, the engine
speed increases to approximately 1,500 rpm while the vehicle is in
motion to initiate the cleaning of the diesel particulate filter auto
matically without the warning lamp lighting up. If the warning lamp
still appears, you should drive to a qualified workshop. •

Avoid damaging the vehicle
When you are driving on poor roads, or over curbs, steep ramps,
etc., make certain that low -lying parts such as spoilers and exhaust
system parts do not bottom out and get damaged.
This is especially true for vehicles with low -slung chassis (sports
chassis) and fu lly loaded vehicles.
Operate your vehicle economically
and minimize pollution
General
Your personal style of driving will determine the economy
o f your vehicle, as well as exhaust and noise levels.
Fuel economy, environmental impact, and wear on your engine,
brakes and tires largely depend on three factors:
• your personal driving style
• operating conditions
• technical limitat ions
If you anticipate what you need to do next and drive economically,
you can easily cu t your fue l consumption by 10 -15 percent . This
section will give you some tips on how you can help the environ
ment and your pocketbook .
[ i ) Tips
The consumption estimates as published by ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECT ION AGENCY (EPA) and Transport Canada may not corre
spond to your actua l consumption on the road, which wi ll vary
depending upon vehic le load and speed, road and weather condi
tions, trip length, etc.
Drive smo~thly and keep a lookout ahead
Vehicles use the m ost fuel when they are accelerating.
Avoid unnecessary accelerating and braking.
Vehicles use the most fue l when they are accelerating . If you antici
pate what is going to happen next, you will need to brake less and,
thus, accelerate less. Let the vehicle coast whenever possible -for
example when you see that the next traffic light is red.
Avoid full throttle
Driving at moderate speeds saves fuel and improves your
mileage.
-Try and keep we ll below your car's maximum speed.
Acce lerating gently reduces fuel consumption, engine wear, and
does not disturb the environment .
Fuel consumption, exhaust em issions and engine noise increase
disproportionately at high speeds. If you drive at approximately
three quarters of top speed, fuel consumption wil l be reduced by
one half. Never drive faster than the posted speed limit and weather
conditions permit .•
Reducing unnecessary idling
E ven when your car is just idling i t burns up fuel.
- Sh ut the eng ine off when you are not driving the vehicle.
- Do not warm up th e vehicle by letting the eng ine r un at
idle.
I t m akes sense to shut off the engine in traffic jams, when waiting
for trains to pass at rai lroad crossings, or at traffic lights that have

long waits on red. Turning the engine off for just 30 -40 seconds
saves more f ue l than i s bu rned star ting the engine again.
It takes a long time for the engine to warm up fully when it is
running at idle. However , wear and noxious em issions are especial ly
h ig h w hen the eng ine is warming up. So y ou should dr ive away as
soon as you start the engine and avoid running at high RPMs whi le
the eng ine is still warming up.

Do not leave en gine idling unattended after starting. If warn ing
lights should come on to indicate improper operation, they would
go unheeded . Extended idling also produces heat, wh ich cou ld
result in overheating or other damage to the vehicle or other
property .
Regular maintenance
A badly tuned engine unnecessarily wastes a lot of fuel.
- Have your vehicle serviced at regu lar intervals.
By having your vehicle regu lar ly serviced by an authorized Audi
dea ler he lps to ensure that it runs properly and econo mically . The
condition of your vehicle not only affects its safety and abi lity to
hold i ts va lue, it a lso affects fuel consumpt ion .
Che ck yo ur oil ea ch t ime you fill your t ank.
T he amount of oil used is related to engine load and speed.
It is nor mal for the oil consumption of a new engine to reach its
lowest va lue after a certain mi leage has been driven.
You must drive your vehicle about 3,000 mi les (5,000 kilometers)
before you can proper ly assess oil consumption .
T his also applies to fuel consumption and engine output.

the service recommendations in your Warranty

booklet. Lack of proper maintenance as we ll as improper use of the
vehic le wi ll impair the function of the emission control system and
cou ld lead to damage .
• Do not alter or remove any component of the Emission Control
System unless approved by the manufacturer .
• Do not alter or remove any device, such as heat shields,
sw itches, ignition wires, valves, which are designed to protect your
vehic le's Emission Control System and other important vehicle
components. •
Fewer short trips
Fuel consump tion will always be relatively hi gh on shor t
trips.
- Try to avo id driving short dista nces wi th a cold en gine.
The engine and cata lytic c onverter have to reach their optima l oper
ating temperature to reduce fuel consumption and noxious emis
sions effective ly .
• Just after starting, a cold engine in a mid-size car burns the fuel
at a poor rate of 6 -8 miles per gallon (30 -40 11100km). Half a mi le
down the road, the mileage improves to 12 MPG (20 1/100 km). It wi ll
take the engine no less than
two and a half miles (4 km) of driving to
warm up to its proper operat ing temperature and operate at a n
economic mileage . This exp lains why taking the car for short trips is
a ra ther waste ful convenience .
• The outs ide temperat ure is also critical in this regard. Your car
consumes more fuel in the winter than in the summer .•

General information

Your authorized Audi dealer has a var iety of dedi cat ed vehicle -care

and can advise which ones to use for cleaning the exterior
and interio r of your vehicle.
Whether you use products recommended by Audi or other commer
cially availab le cleaning agen ts, please make su re you apply them
correctly .

Care of exterior
Washing
F requent washing protects the vehicle.
The best protection against environmental influences is frequent
washing a nd waxing.
How often this is required depends on :
• How much the vehicle is used
• Where the vehicle is parked (garage, in the open under trees ,
etc.)
• The seasonal and weather conditions
• Environmenta l influences
The longer bird droppings, insects, tree resin, road and industrial
gri me, tar, soot, road salt and other materials remain on the vehicle
body , the more lasting their destructive effects will be. .,_

Cleaning and protection -

Safety belts
Only well-maintained safety belts work reliably when
needed.
-Keep belts clean.
- For cleaning, use a mild soap and water solution. Let
belts dry thoroughly and away from direct sunlight.
- Do not allow inertia reel safety belts to retract before
they are completely dry.
- Check the condition of your safety belts
regularly.
Heavily soiled safety belts may not retract properly.
& WARNING
Damaged safety belts can break in a crash .
• Anything that might damage your safety belts could mean that
you and your passengers would not be adequately protected in an
accident.
• Safety belt performance depends on correct installation. Never
remove belts from the vehicle to clean them .
• Do not use chemical cleaning agents, bleach or dyes. They have
corrosive properties which weaken the webbing.
• When cleaning your safety belts, inspect them for damage. If
you discover damage, see your authorized Audi dealer.
• Always read and heed all WARNINGS and other information
=:, page 204. •
Engine compartment
Be especially careful when cleaning the engine compart
ment.
Always switch off the ignition before cleaning the engine =:> &.
Plenum panel
Remove leaves from the plenum panel in front of the windshield
under the engine hood. This prevents the water drain holes from
becoming blocked, and it prevents debris from entering the vehicle
interior through the heating and ventilation ducts .
Corrosion protection
The engine compartment and transmission have been corrosion
protected at the factory.
Good anti-corrosion treatment is very important, particularly in the
winter. If the vehicle is frequently driven on salt treated roads, the
entire engine compartment and plenum panel should be thor
oughly cleaned at the end of winter and retreated to prevent salt
damage. At the same time, the underside of the vehicle should be
washed as well.
If the engine compartment is cleaned at any time with grease
removing solutions
3l, or if you have the engine washed , the anti
corrosion treatment is almost always removed as well . It is therefore
essential to have a long-lasting corrosion protection reapplied to all
surfaces, seams, joints and components in the engine compart
ment.
& WARNING
Be aware: The engine compartment of any motor vehicle is a
potentially hazardous area.

Fuel supply
Using the right fuel helps keep the environment clean and
prevents engine damage.
Fuel r ecomm end ati on
The fuel recommended for your vehic le is unl eade d prem ium grade
gaso line . See also ~
page 296, "Data". Audi recommends using TOP
T IER Detergent Gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 91 AKI (95
RON). For more information on TOP TIER Detergent Gaso line, please
go to the official website (www.toptiergas .com).
The recommended gasoline octane rating for your engine can also be found on a label located on the inside of the fuel fille r flap. This
rating may be specified as AK I or RON .
Your vehic le may also be operated us ing unleaded regular gasoline
with a minimum octane rating of 87 AKl/91 RON . However, using 87
AKl/9 1 RON octane fuel will slightly reduce engine performance.
Use unle ad ed ga so line only . Unleaded gaso line is avai lable
throughout the USA, Canada, and in most European countries. We
recommend that you do not take your vehicle to areas or countr ies
where un leaded gasoline may not be available .

Octane ra tin g
Octane rating indicates a gaso line's ability to resist engine
damaging "knock" caused by premature ignition and detonation.
Therefore, buying the correct grade of gaso line is very important to
help prevent possible engine damage and a loss of engine perfor
mance. Gasoline most common
ly used in the United States and Canada has
the following octane ratings that can usua lly be found on the filler
pump:
• Premium Grade : 91 -96 AKI
• Regular Grade: 87 -90 AKI
Explanation of the abbreviations:
AKI = Anti Knock Index= (R +M)/2 = (RON +MON)/2
RON = Research Octane Number
MON = M otor Octane Number .

• Do not use any fue l with octane ratings lower than 87 AKI or 91
RON otherwise expensive engine damage will occur .
• Do
not use leaded gasoline! The use of leaded gasoline will
severe ly damage your vehicle's catalytic converter and its abi lity to
control exhaust emissions. •
Blended gasoline
Use of g aso line containing alco hol or M TB E ( meth yl
t er tiary butyl e ther )
You may use unleaded gasoline blended with alcohol or MTBE
(commonly referred to as oxygenates) if the blended mixture meets
the follow ing criteria:
Bl end of g asoline m eth anol (wood al coho l or methyl alc oh ol)
• Anti-knock index must be 87 AKI or higher .
• Blend must contain no more than 3% methanol.
• Blend must contain more than 2% co-solvents.

• Anti -knock index must be 87 A KI or higher.
• Blend must not contain more than 10% ethanol.
Blend of gasoline and MTBE
• Anti -knock index mus t be 87 AKI or higher.
• Blend must contain not more than 15% MTBE.
Seasonally adjusted ga sol ine
Many gaso line grades are blended to perform especia lly wel l for
winter or summer d rivi ng. During seasona l change -over, we suggest
that you fill up at busy gas stations where the seasonal adjustment
is more likely to be made in time .

• Methanol fue ls which do not meet these requirements may
cause corrosion and damage to plastic and rubber components in
the fue l system.
• Do not use fuels that fail to meet the specif ied criteria in this
chapter .
• If you are unable to determine whether or not a particu lar fuel
blend meets the specifications, ask your service station or its fuel
supplier.
• Do n ot use fuel for w hich the con tents cann ot be iden tified.
• Fuel system damage and performance p rob lems resulting from
th e use of fuels d ifferen t from those speci fied a re not the resp onsi
bility of Audi and are not covered under the New Vehicle or the
E mi ssion Contr ol System Warran tie s.
• If you experience a loss of fue l economy or driveabi lity and
performance p ro blems due to t he use of o ne of these fuel blends,
we recommend that you switch to unblended fuel. •
Gasoline additives
A major concern among many auto manufacturers is carbon
d epos it build -up caused by the type of gasol ine y ou use.
A lthough gasoline grades differ from one manufacturer to another,
t hey have certain things in common . A ll gas oline g rades co ntain
substances that can cause deposits to collect on vital engine parts,
such as fue l injectors and intake valves. A lthough most gaso line
brands include additives to keep eng ine and fue l systems clean,
they are not equal ly effective .
Audi reco mmends using TOP TIER De tergent Gasol ine. F or mo re
information on TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline, p lease go to the offi

A ft er an extended period of usin g inadequate fuels, bui lt -up carbon
depos its can rob you r engine of peak pe rformance .

Diesel fuel
Alwa ys use ULS D (Ultr a Low Sulfur D ie sel) s ulfur con te n t
15 ppm or less.
T he ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) meets the AS TM -D -975 (grade 2l.
Diesel fuel with a higher concentration than ULSD -Diesel No . 2
ASTM D975 and Bio -diesel with a h igher concentration than 5 % like
B11 , B20 or B100 are strictly prohibited.
Serv ice station fuel pu mps are labeled with the correct fuel in fo rma
tion for easy recognition by the user. If the diese l fue l pump is not .,_

labeled ask the station operator what fuel is being dispensed before
filling up your vehic le .
Service stations offering diesel fuel are generally located on truck
routes or major highways. Directories of diesel fuel stations are
usually available at diese l fuel stations.
Some states in the USA require permits to purchase diesel fuel.
Check with your State Motor Vehicle Department.
Diesel fuel may not be available outside the USA and Canada . Be
su re to check before traveling to other countries .
Winte r ope ra ti on
At temperatures be low 20° F (- 7° Cl, Diesel fuel No. 2 loses its fluidity
due to wax separation, which may c log the fuel filter or tank filter
and keep the engine from running.
To he lp the filter from being clogged by wax, the fue l filter in your
vehic le is automatically preheated. Preheating the fuel fi lter makes
operation of your vehicle poss ible with Diese l fue l No. 2 down to -
10° F (- 24° Cl.
If you expect tempe ratures below 5° F ( -15° C) ask your fuel dealer
whether their Diesel fuel No. 2 is sufficiently winterized for the prevai ling and expected temperatures .
If not winterized or insufficiently winterized diesel fuel has already
thickened to the extent that the engine will not start, warm the
vehicle up by leaving it in a heated garage.
It is normal that the engine noise level (dieseling) is louder during
the warm -up per iod in winter. It is also normal when whitish -blue
smoke comes out of the tailpipe after starting and dur ing warm-up.
The amount of smoke depends on the outside temperature .
Do not let your diese l eng ine idle unnecessarily after a cold start.
Driving off slowly will shorten the warm -up period.

• Never use "s tarting a ssis t f luid s." They m ay be pot entiall y
explo sive or c au se a " run-away " engine condition. Thi s cou ld
re sult in serious e ngin e da ma ge a nd pe rsonal injury.
• Never use fu el line anti -free ze offer ed f or ga soline engine s.
0 Note
• Your diesel engine has been speci fically designed to operate
only on Ultra Low Sulfur Diese l fuel. Therefore, never use home
heating oi l or regular gaso line . The properties of these fuels may
cause serious damage to the fuel injection system and to the
engine . Using these fuels can cause expensive engine repairs and
wi ll also adversely affect your New Vehic le Limited Warranty.
• I f diese l fue l should get on any rubber hose, it must be wiped off
immediately . Then wash the contaminated hose portion with soap
and warm water. Do not allow diesel fuel to remain on connecting
hoses. They may develop leaks and cause serious damage. •
