-Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases
braking distance or causes complete fail­
ure of the brake system.
- To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it
in place with the brake pedal or parking
brake.
- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with
a slipping clutch. The clutch opens auto­
matically when it becomes too hot from
the overload. An indicator lamp
mJ illu­
minates and a driver message appears
¢ page 9 7 when the clutch is overload­
ed .
- If the engine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure the
selector lever has securely engaged and
is locked in P with the parking brake set
¢ page 214. Otherwise, any increase in
engine speed may set the vehicle in mo­
tion, even with the parking brake ap­ plied .
0 Note
-S tronic- and tiptronic transmission:
When stopping on an incline, do not try
to hold the vehicle in place by pressing
the accelerator pedal while a driving gear
is selected. This can cause the transmis­
sion to overheat and can damage it. Acti­
vate the parking brake or press the brake
pedal to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
- S tronic- and tiptronic transmission: Al­
lowing the vehicle to roll when the en­
gine is stopped and the selector lever is in N will damage the transmission be­
cause it is not lubricated under those cir­
cumstances .
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driv ­
er's safety belt is engaged in the buckle.

Hill descent control

The hill descent control system assists the
driver when driving down declines .
Hill descent control is activated when these­
lector lever is in D/S and you press the brake
pedal. The transmission automatically selects
a gear that is suitable for the incline. Hill de­ scent control tries to maintain the speed ach­
ieved at the time of braking, within physical
and technical limitations. It may still be nec­
essary to adjust the speed with the brakes.
Hill descent control switches off once the de­
cline levels out or you press the accelerator
pedal.
On vehicles with the cruise control system*
¢ page 89 , hill descent control is also activat­
ed when the speed is set.
.&_ WARNING
-
Hill descent control cannot overcome
physical limitations, so it may not be able
to maintain a constant speed under all
conditions. Always be ready to apply the brakes .

downsh ifts into a lower gear ratio depend ing
on the vehicle speed and engine speed. As
lo ng as the accelerator pedal is depressed, the
engine speed is automatically regulated for
maximum acceleration .

tiptronic transmission
When you depress the accelerator peda l be­
yond the resistance point, the automatic transmission downsh ifts into a lowe r gear, de­
pend ing on veh icle s peed an d eng ine speed .

gency mode. This mode only shifts into cer­

g ine may stall . Drive to your authorized A udi
dealer or qualified repair facility immediate ly
to have the ma lfunction corrected .

You can continue driving
S tron ic transm issio n: There is a system ma l­
function in the transmission. The transmis ­
sion is switc hing to eme rgency mode. This
mode on ly shifts into certain gears or w ill no
longer s hift at all. The engine may sta ll. You
cannot engage the reverse gear . Drive to your
author ized Audi dealer or qua lified repair fa ­
cili ty immediately to have the malf unction
corrected.
@] Transmiss ion malfunction: Stop vehicle

The adaptive c ruise control is avai lab le from
the 2nd gear through the 6th gea r in the cus­
tomary RPM.
When the adapt ive cruise control is turned on,
you must p ress the clutch to shift gears (as
usual) . When sh ifting normally or when press­
ing the cl utch, the adap tive c ruise control re­
mains turned on.
Afte r you have engaged the gear, you do
not
need to press the gas peda l. The adaptive
cru ise control accelerates automat ica lly if nec­
essary.
I f you press dow n on the clutch fo r too long or
shift/coup le improperly, the adaptive cruise
control may turn off automat ically.

The adaptive cruise control works in conjunc ­
tion with a radar sensor installed in the front
of the vehicle

ed . On open
roads with no traffic, adaptive cr uise
control works like a regular cruise contro l sys­
tem. The stored speed is maintained . When
approaching a moving vehicle detected up
ahead, the adaptive cruise control system au­
tomat ica lly slows down to match that vehi ­
cle's speed and then maintains the distance
that the dr iver previously stored . As soon as
the sys tem does not detec t a vehicle up
ahead, adaptive cruise cont ro l ac celerates
back up to the stored speed .
Which functions can be controlled?
When you switch adapt ive cruise control on,
you can set the cu rrent speed as the "contro l
speed "
¢ page 102, Switching on and off.
When dr iving, you can stop cru ise contro l

at any time.

This driver message appears if the system is
turned off via the radio/MM!*. Otherwise, if

the case, the system will not provide warnings
about a possible collision.
Braking guard: Activated
This driver message appears if sharp brake
press ure was applied due to an acute warning.

the speed even though there was no previous­

ACC: Deactivation

This message appears if the sensor view is ob ­
structed, for example by leaves, snow, heavy

This driver message appears in vehicles with
manua l transmission if the driver had not up­
shifted or downs hifted in time while using
adaptive cruise control braking or accelerat­
ing, caus ing the vehicle to exceed or no t reach
the permitted limit speed. The adaptive cruise
control turns off. A chime sounds as a remind­
er .
Shift lever position!
Vehicles with an automat ic transmission: the
driver message appears if the selecto r lever is
shifted to the N position. Th e adaptive cruise
control is no t available while in this position.
Vehicles with manua l transm ission: the driver
message appears for vehicles with manual
transmission if there is no forward gear en­
gaged, meaning if the reverse gear or the 1st
gear is engaged or if the selector leve r is in
the neutral position . The adaptive cr uise con­
trol is not available while in th is position.
Stabilization control (ESC)
This message appears if the electronic stabili­
z ation control ( ESC) is taking action to stab i­
lize the vehicle. The adaptive cruise contro l
turns off. A chime sounds as a reminder .
Speed too low
This message appears if the current speed is
too low
to set or to maintain the desired
speed .
The speed be ing saved must be at least
20 mph (30 km/h). The cruise control is
turned off for speeds lower than 12 mph

Introduction

Drive select provides the possibility to experi­
ence diffe rent types of vehicle sett ings in one
vehicle. For instance, using the three
Com­
fort, Auto and Dynamic modes, the driver can
switch from a sporty to a comfortab le driving
mode with the press of a button.
Addit ionally, in vehicles with
MM I*, the vehi ­
cle setup for
Individual* mode can be cus­
tomized by you. This makes it possib le to
combine settings such as a sporty engine tun­
ing with comfortable steering.
A WARNING
Improper use of the Audi drive select can
cause collisions, other acc idents and seri­
ous personal injury.
Description
Applies to vehicles: with Audi drive select
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on
the vehicle's features . However, the engine,
automatic t ransmission* and steering are al­
ways involved.
-
Engine and automatic transmission*
Depending on the mode, the engine and the
automatic transmission respond quicker or in
a more ba lanced manner to acce lerator pedal
movements. In the sporty dynamic mode, the
automatic transmission shifts at higher RPMs .
Steering
The steering adapts in terms of steering effort
and steering ratios . Indirect steer ing that
moves easily, like the steering in comfort
mode , is best su ited to long dr ives on a high­
way. In contrast, dynamic mode prov ides
sporty, di rect steering.
The follow ing applies to vehicles with dynam ic
steer ing*: the steering ratio changes based on
vehicle speed in order to maintain optimum

steering effort for the driver at all times. This
sets the steering to be less sensitive at higher
speeds in order to provide improved vehicle
control. At reduced speeds, however, steering
is more direct in order to keep the steering ef­
fort as minimal as possible when the driver is
maneuveri ng the veh icle . At low and average
speeds, dynamic steering addit iona lly pro­
vides more responsive steering performance.
Adaptive dampers*
The adaptive dampers* use sensors to record
information regarding steering movements,
braking and acceleration operations by the
driver , road surface, driving speed, and load.
T his makes it possible to adapt damp ing to
the d riving situation v irtually i n rea l time.
Drive select also makes it possible to satisfy
the desire for sporty suspension (Dynamic)
and comfortab le suspension (Comfort) with­
out giving up balanced tuning (Auto) .
Sport differential*
As a component of the all whee l dr ive system
(quattro)
~ page 192, the sport differential*
distributes the driving power to the rear axle
depending on the situation . The distribution
of power varies depending on the mode se­ lected. The goal is a high level of agility and
ability to accelerate on curves . The vehicle is
very respons ive to steering .
Audi adaptive cruise control*
The behavior when accelerating can be adjust­
ed from comfortab le to sporty, depending on
the drive select mode. Adaptive cruise control
also responds to the driving behavior of the
vehicle ahead in a more conservative or sporty
manner .
Engine sound*
The sound of the engine is adapted to the se­
lected mode and ranges from subtle to sporty.

-In some models, the maximum vehicle
speed can only be reached in the
Auto
and Dynamic modes.

namic driving feel and is suited for every day

Dynamic -gives the driver a sporty driving
feel and is suited to a sporty driving style.

The brakes on today 's automob iles are st ill
subject to wear, depending largely on operat ­
ing conditions and driving habits

vehicles that are either driven mostly in stop­
and-go city traffic or are driven hard, the
brake pads should be checked by your author­
ized Audi dealer more often than specified in
the
W arranty & M ainte nance booklet . Failure
to have your brake pads inspected can result
in reduced b rake pe rformance.
On steep slopes, you should use the brak ing
effect of the eng ine . This way, you prevent un ­
necessa ry wear on the brake system. If you
must use you r brakes, do not hold the brakes
down continuously . P u mp the b rakes at inter­
va ls.
Operating nois e
Noises may occur when braking depending on
the speed, braking force and outside condi­
tions such as temperature and humidity .
Effect of w ater and ro ad sa lt
In certain situat ions, for example after driving
through wate r, in heavy ra in, after overn ight
condensation or after washing your car, the brak ing effect can be reduced by moistu re or
i ce on the bra ke roto rs and b rake pads . The
b rakes must be dried fi rst with a few ca ref ul
brake app lications .
At h igher speeds and with the w indshie ld w ip­
e rs turned on, the brake pads press agains t
the bra ke rotors for a short amount of time.
This occurs a t regular intervals without the
driver noticing and provides for better brake response time under wet conditions.
The effectiveness of the brakes can be reduced
when the vehicle is driven on a salt-covered
road and the brakes are not used. Likewise,
you clean off accumulated sa lt coating from
brake discs and pads with a few caut ious ap ­
plications of the brake

Cor rosion
There may be a tendency for dirt to bui ld up
on the brake pads and corrosion to form on the d
iscs if the car is not driven regu larly or
o n Ly for short trips with litt le use of the
brakes.
If t he brakes a re not used frequently, o r if cor­
r os ion has formed on the discs, it is adv isable
to clean off the pads and discs by braking
firmly a few times from a moderately h igh
speed

If you shou ld notice a sudden increase in
brake pedal trave l, then one of the two brake
circuits may have fai led

Brake booster
The brake booster inc reases the pressure that

Brake lining wear may be checked by visual in­
spect io n of the condition of the brake pads
th rough the open ings in the wheel. If neces­
sary, the wheel may be removed fo r thi s i n­

- New b rake pads don' t have the bes t stop­
ping power and m ust be "bro ken -in" dur ­
ing the initial 100 to 150 miles (150 to
200 kilometers) of normal c ity driving.
You can compensate for this by pressing the brake pedal more firmly. Th is also
applies later when new pads are instal­
led.
- You shou ld perform braking maneuvers
for the purpose of cleaning the brake
system only if road conditions permit.
Othe r road use rs must no t be put at risk -
you may ca use an accident!
- Before descend ing a steep grade, reduce
speed and sh ift transmission into a lower
gear or lower dr iving range. Do not ride

During the first few hours of driving, the en­
g ine's internal friction is higher than later
when all the moving parts have been broken
in . How well this break -in process is done de ­
pends to a considerable extent on the way the
ve hicl e is driven du ring the first 1,000 miles
(1,500 kilome ters).

Extremely h igh engine speeds are auto­
mat ica lly reduc ed. However, t hese rpm
lim its are programmed for a n engine well
r u n- in, not a new engine.

Do not drive with unnecessarily high en­
g ine speeds -upshifting ear ly saves f uel,
reduces noise and protects the environ­
ment.
New tires
If your vehicle is running on new tires, drive
very carefully for the first 350 miles (500 ki lo­
meters) after fitting.

N ew tires tend to be sl ippery and mus t al­

meters) . Brake gently . Avoid fo llowing
closely behind other vehicles or other sit­
uations that m ight require sudden, hard
b raking .
Avoid damaging the
vehicle
When you are d rivi ng on poo r roads, or over
cu rbs, steep ramps, etc., make certa in that
low- ly in g parts s uch as spo ile rs and ex ha ust
system parts do not bottom o ut and get dam ­
aged.
Th is is espec ially true for veh icles with low­
s lung chassis (spo rts chas sis)* and fully load ­
ed vehicles.
Driving through water
on roads
Note the following to avoid ve hicle damage
when driving through water, for e xamp le on
flooded roads:
- The wa ter must not be any higher than the
bottom of the vehicle body .
- Do not dr ive faster than walk ing speed .
