Installing a child restraint with LATCH
lower anchorages
Whenever you install a child restraint always fol­
low the child restraint manufacturer's instruc­
tions .

Mounting
.. Make s ure the seatback of the rear seat bench

.. Remove the covers to access the lower anchor­
age brackets.
.. Attach both hook-on connectors with the spring
catch release on the child safety seat onto the
LATCH lower anchorage so that the connectors
lock into place

Remember: Use tether straps to he lp keep the
chi ld restraint f irmly in place .

A WARNING
-Improper use of the LATCH system can in-
crease the ris k of serious persona l injury a nd
death in a n accident.
- These anchors were developed only for child
safety seats using the "LATCH" system.
- Never attach other ch ild safety seats, be lts
or other objects to these anchors.
- Always make sure that you hear a click when
latching the seat in place . If you do not hear
a click the seat is not sec ure and co uld f ly
forward and hit the inter ior of the vehicle,
or be ejected from the veh icle.

A tether is a straight or V-shaped strap that at­
taches the top part of a ch ild restraint to special
anchorage poi nts in the veh icle. ..,

Child safety
The purpose of the tether is to reduce the for­
ward movement of the child restraint in a crash,
in order to help reduce the risk of head injury
that could be caused by striking the vehicle inte­ rior .
Forward facing child restraints manufactured af­
ter September 1, 1999, are required by U .S. fed­
eral regulations to comply with new child head movement performance requirements . These
new performance requirements make a tether
necessary on most new child safety seats .
A WARNING
Improper installation of child restraints will
increase the r isk of injury and death in a
crash.
- Always follow the instructions provided by
the manufacturer of the child restraint you
intend to ins tall in your Audi.
- Imprope r use of child restra int anchors (in­
cl ud ing tether anchors) can lead to in jury in
a collision. The anchors are designed to
withstand only those loads imposed by cor­
rectly f itted child restraints .
- Never mount two child restraint systems on
one LATCH lower anchor point .
- Never attach two child restrai nt systems to
one tether strap or tether anchorage.
- Never a ttach a tether strap to a t ie -down
hoo k in the luggage compartment.
- Never use ch ild restraint tether an chorages
to sec ure safety belts or other k inds of occ u­
pant restraints.

.,. Release or deploy the tether strap on the ch ild
restraint according to the ch ild restraint manu­
facture r's instructions.
.,. Guide the upper te ther strap
under the rear
head rest raint (raise the head restra int if neces­
sary) . For child restraints with V -tether straps,
always make sure that the head restraint guide
rods do not interfere with any part of the top
tether strap.
.,. Tilt the recess f lap up to expose the anchor
bracket.
.,. Attach the tether st rap anchorage hook into
the opening of the tether anchorage .
.,. Pull on the tether strap hook so that the spring
catch of the hook engages .
.,. Ti ghten the tether strap f irm ly following the
child restraint manufacture r's instructions .
Releasing the tether strap
.,. Loosen the tension fo llow ing the child restra int
manufact urer's instr uctions.
.,. Depress the spr ing catch on the hook and re­
lease it from the anchorage.
(D Note
I f you leave the child restra int with the tethe r
strap firmly installed for severa l d ays, this
could leave a mark on the upholstery on the
seat cushion and backrest in the area where
the tether strap was installed. The upholstery
would a lso be permanently stretched a round
the tether strap. T his applies especially to
l eathe r seats .

Using tether straps on rearward-facing
child restraints
Currently, few rear-facing chi ld restraint systems
come with a tether. Please read and heed the
child restraint system manufacturer's instruc­
tions carefully to determine how to properly in­
stall the tether.
A WARNING
A child in a rearward-facing child safety seat
installed on the front passenger seat will be
ser iously injured and can be killed if the front
airbag inflates -even w ith an Advanced A irbag
System.
- T he inflating a irbag w ill hit the child safety
seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the child safety seat and child
against the backrest, center armrest, or
door.
- If you must install a rearward facing child
safety seat on the front passenger seat be­
cause of exceptiona l circumstances and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF,;; light does not
come on and stay on, immed iate ly install
the rear-facing child safety seat in a rear
seat ing pos ition and have the airbag system
inspected by your Audi dealer.

These fuels contain substances that can se­
verely damage the fue l system and the en­
gine if the engine is started .
Refueling
Fuel filler neck
The fuel fille r neck is located on the right rear
s ide pan el behind the fu el filler flap .
I f the power locking system should fail, you can
still open the flap manua lly -for detai led instruc­
tions see

You can find the fuel tank capac ity of you r vehicle
in
c::> page 362 .
The label on the inside of the fuel filler flap tells
you the correct fue l for your vehicle . For more in­
formation about fue l specifications , see
c::> page 296 .
Your veh icle fuel tank has an onboard refuelling
vapor recovery system . This feature he lps to pre­
ve nt fuel vapors from escap ing from the tank and
pollut ing the e nvironment while yo u re fuel your
veh icle. In order to fi ll the tank properly while
protecting the environment, please fo llow this
r e fu eling procedure carefu lly.
& WARNING
Under normal operating conditions, never car­
ry additiona l fuel containers in yo ur car. Gas
canisters and other conta iners used to trans­
port fuel can be dangerous . S uch containers,
full or empty , may lea k and could cause a fire
in a collision. If yo u m ust t ransport fue l to
use for yo ur lawn mower, snow blower, etc.,
be very careful and a lways obse rve loca l and
state laws regard ing the use, t ransportation
and sto rage of such fue l conta iners. Make cer­
tain the container meets industry standards
(ANSI/ASTM F852 -86).

Never drive yo ur vehicle unt il the fuel tan k is
comp letely empty . The irregular supply of

To avoid fuel spill ing or evaporating from the fuel
tank always close fuel cap p roperly and com­
p letely . An improperly closed fue l filler cap may
a lso cause the MIL lamp¢
page 25 to come on .
A WARNING -
Not paying attention when fueling or han ­
dling fue l incorrectly can lead to fires, exp lo ­
sions or serious injuries.
- Fuel ignites easily and can cause serious
burns and other injuries.
- If you do not switch the engine off when fu ­
eling and/or do not insert the fuel nozz le
completely into the tank opening, fue l can
leak out or run over . Leaked fuel can ignite
and start a fire .
- Do not use the telephone whi le fueling. The
electromagnetic rays can cause sparks,
wh ich can ignite fuel vapors and start a fire .
- Do not sit in your vehicle while fueling. If
you must make an except ion and enter your
vehicle again wh ile fueling , close the door
and touch meta l to discharge static electric­
ity befo re touching the fue l nozzle . Static
elect ricity can create spar ks, wh ich can ig ­
nite vapors when fue ling.
- Do not smoke or have an open flame in the
area when fueling your veh icle or filling a
fuel contai ner because th is increases the
risk of an explosion .
- For yo ur safety , carrying f uel containers in
yo ur vehicle is no t recommended. Whethe r
f ull or empty, the conta iner can leak and
cause a fire in the event of an accident .
- If you must make an exception and trans­
port a fuel container, note the following :
- Never fill the fuel container with fuel
while it is in or on the vehicle. Stat ic elec ­
tr icity is d ischa rged when filling wh ich can
cause the f uel vapors to ignite and in­
creases the r isk of an explos ion.
- Always p lace a fuel container on the
g ro u nd before fi llin g.
Ch eck ing and Filling
-Always hold the fuel nozzle completely in
the fuel container when filling .
- If the fuel container is made of metal, the
fuel nozzle must always be in contact with
the container when filling it with fuel. This
prevents stat ic electricity from discharg­
ing .
- Never spill fuel in the vehicle or the lug­
gage compartment . Evaporated fuel is ex­
plosive and increases the risk of serious in­
jury or death .
- Follow lega l requirements when using,
stor ing and transporti ng fuel containers .
- Make sure the fuel container conforms to
industry standards (ANSI/AS TM F8S2 -86).
@ Note
- Remove spilled fuel from vehicle pa int im­
mediately, because it can damage paint.
- Never drive until the fuel tank is complete ly
empty. The irregular supply of fue l that re­
sults from that can cause eng ine misfires.
Uncombusted fuel will enter the exhaust
system and increase the risk of damage to
the catalytic converter .
- If the fuel tank runs complete ly empty in a
vehicle with a diesel engine , the ignition
must remain switched on fo r at least 30
seconds afte r ref ueli ng before starting the
eng ine. It may take longer than usual fo r
t he engine to s tart, even up to a minu te .
T his is because the air must first b leed out
of the fue l system when starting the eng in e.
@ For the sake of the environment
Do not overfill the fuel tank, otherwise fuel
can leak out when the vehicle is warming up.
(D Tips
D iesel ve hicles are eq uipped w ith a diesel mis­
fueling guard .
It allows the vehi cle to be fu­
eled on ly with a diesel fuel pump nozzle. A
worn or damaged nozzle or a nozzle that is
too small may not be able to open the diese l
misfueling guard. If this is the case, try turn­
i ng the nozzle before inserting it in the fue l
filler tube, use a different fuel p ump or see an

Ad Blue left to drive the distance indicated in the i nstr ument cluster . Fill the Ad Blue. Otherwise
the eng ine will not start aga in if you stop it once
the distance indicated has been dr iven .

This message appears when the AdBlue ta nk is
empty. Fill the AdB lue . Otherwise you will not be
ab le to start the engine agai n once yo u stop it.

Incorrect filling/system malfunction
A message appears if the Ad Blue tank was filled
with a f luid other than Ad Bl ue and the system
h as detec ted that the t ank was fi lled incor rect ly,
or if there is a system malfunc tion .

This message appears when it is only poss ible to

This message appea rs if the system has detected
that the tank was filled inco rrectly or that there
is a malfunction . D rive immediately to the near­
est a utho riz ed Aud i dea ler o r authorized Audi
Service Fa cili ty to have the malfunction correct­
ed . Otherwise you will not be able to start the en­
gine again once you stop it.

The Ad Blue tank ope ning is located near the d ie­
se l tank opening. Add at least 1.5 gallons (5. 7
L)
of Ad Blue. This is the minim um amount required
to ensure the system detects the refilling and to
start the engine. You can add a maximum of 6.3 gallons (24 L).
Requireme nt: the request to add Ad Blue must
appea r in the instrument cluster disp lay.

Catalytic converter
Applies to vehicles a with gasoli ne engine : the
vehicle may only be driven with unleaded gaso­ li ne, otherwise the cata lytic converter will be de­
stroyed .
Never dr ive until the tank is complete ly empty.
The irregu lar supply of fuel that resu lts from that
can cause eng ine misfires. Uncombusted fue l will
enter the exhaust system, which can cause over­
hea ting and damage to the cata lytic converter .
Diesel particulate filter
Applies to vehicle s with a diesel engine : the die­
sel part icu late filter filters nearly all of the soot
particles out of the exhaust. The f ilter cleans it­
self automatically under normal dr iv ing cond i­
t ions .
If the filter cannot clean itself (fo r exam­
ple, bec ause you are only d rivi ng short distan­
c es), the filte r becomes clogged wi th soo t and
t h e
Cl indica to r li gh t for the diese l part icu late
filter turns on ¢
page 34.
A WARNING
The temperat ure of the exhaust system is
h igh, both when driv ing and after stopping
the eng ine.
-
- Never touch the exhaust tail pipes once they
have become hot. This cou ld res ult in burns.
- Do not park your veh icle over flammable
materials such as grass or leaves because
the high temperature of the emissions con­ trol system (catalytic converter or d iesel
pa rtic ulate filter) could start a fire.
- Do not app ly underbody protectant in the
exhaust system area , beca use this increases
the r isk of f ire.

Working in the engine compartment
Special care is required if you are working in the
engine compartment
Fo r wo rk in th e engine compa rtmen t, s uch as
c h ec kin g and filli ng flu id s, th ere is a risk of in­
j u ry, sc aldin g, ac cide nts, a nd b urn s. For this
rea son, foll ow all the warning s and gener al
s a fe ty p recaution s pr ov ided in the f ollow ing in·
f o rm ation . Th e en gine c omp artmen t is a dan ­
ger ous are a.

- T urn the engine off.
- Switch the ign ition off .
- Set the parking brake .
- Select the P selector lever pos ition .
- let the engine cool down.
- Never open the hood if you can see steam or coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment, because th is increases the r isk of
burns . Wait until no steam or coolant is es­
caping .
- Keep ch ildren away from the engine com­
partment .
- Never spill flu ids on a hot engine. These flu­
ids (such as the anti -freezing agent con ­
ta ined in the coolant) can ignite .
- Avoid short circu its in the electrical system,
especially to the battery .
- When working in the engine compartment,
remember that the rad iator fan can sw itch
on even if the ign ition is switched off, which
increases the risk of injury .
- Never open the cap on the coolant expan­ sion tank when the eng ine is warm. The
cooling system is under pressu re .
- To protect your face, hands, and arms from
hot steam or coolant, cover the cap with a
large cloth when opening.
- Do not remove the engine cover under any
circumstances. This increases the risk of
burns.
- If tests need to be performed w ith the en­
gine running, there is additional danger d ue

to moving components (such as the ribbed
be lt, alternator and rad iator fan) and from
the high-voltage ignition system.
- Do not under any circumstances activate the
throttle inadvertently (for example, by hand
from the engine compartment) if the vehi­
cle is stat ionary but the eng ine is running
and a gear is engaged . Otherwise, the veh i­
cle will start to move immediately and this
could result in an acc ident.
- Pay attent ion to the following warnings list­
ed when wor k on the fue l system o r on the
electrical equipment is req uired.
- Always disconnect the vehicle battery
from the vehicle electrical system.
- Do not smoke .
- Never work near open flames.
- Always have a working fire extinguisher
nearby
- To reduce the r isk of e lectr ic shock and in­
jury, never touch the follow ing components
when the engine is running or is being start ­
ed:
- Ign ition cable
- Other components in the electronic high-
voltage ign ition system
- If you must check or perform work on the engine whi le it is running:
- Set the parking brake and place the selec­
tor lever in the P (park) pos ition first.
- Always proceed w ith extreme cau tion so
that clothing, jewelry or long hair do not become ca ught in the rad iator fan, fan
belt or other moving components or do
not come into contact with hot compo­
nents. Tie back long hair before beginning
work and do not wear clothing that can hang down into the engine .
- Limit your exposure to exhaust and chemi­
cals to as short a time as possible¢.&. .

- Engine exhaust, some of its constituents,
and certa in vehicle components conta in or
emit chemicals known to the State of Cali-
fornia to cause cancer and birth defects and ..,

reproductive harm. In addition, certain flu­
ids contained in vehicles and certain prod­
ucts of component wear contain or emit
chemicals known to the State of California
to cause cancer and birth defects or other
reproduct ive harm.
- Battery posts, terminals and related acces­
sories contain lead and lead compounds,
chem icals known to the State of California
to cause cance r and rep roductive harms.
Wash hands after handling.

When filling flu ids, be sure not to mix the flu­
ids up . Otherwise severe ma lfunctions and en­
gine damage w ill occur.
@ For the sake of the environment
You should regularly check the grou nd under
your veh icle in order to detect Leaks qu ickly . If
there are v isible spots from oil or other fluids,
bring your vehicle to an authorized Aud i dea l­
er or authorized Audi Service Facility to be
checked.

The hood is released from the interior.

Make sure the wiper arms are not raised up from
the windshield. Otherwise the paint could be
damaged .

If the hood is not latched complete ly, it could
fly up wh ile you are driving and obstruct your
vis ion.
- For safety reasons, the hood must always be
closed securely while driv ing. Because of
this, always check the hood after closing it
to make sure it is latched correctly . The
hood is latched if the front corners cannot
be lifted.

Engine oil specifications
The engine oil used must conform to exact speci­
fications .
The serv ice interval d isplay in the instrument
cluster of your vehicle will inform you when it is
time for an o il change. We recommend that you
have you r oil changed by an author ized Audi Se rv­
i ce Adv isor.
If you have to top off the oil between oil changes, u se the Audi oil quality standard specif ied in the
tab~.
