bars, thin painted vertical poles or fences may not be detected by the
system, posing risk of damage .
• Never use warm or hot water to remove snow or ice from the rear
view camera lens - danger of crack formation on the lens!
• When cleaning the lens, never use products that are abrasive. •
Applies to veh icles: with park ing syste m (rear, with rear view camera)
Switching on/off
The rear view camera switches on automatically together
with the acoustic park assist* when you put the vehicle in
reverse .
Switching on
-Before parking with the rear view camera, the Adaptive Air
Suspension* comfort or automatic mode must be
switched  on=>
page 16.
-Put the vehicle in reverse gear, the acoustic parking
system* with rear view camera is activated automatically.
Activation of the acoustic parking system is confirmed by a brief acknowledgement sound.*
Switching off
- Drive faster than 6 mph (10 km/h), or
- take the vehicle out of reverse gear. The acoustic parking
system* is immediately deactivated, and the rear view
camera picture is deactivated automatically after a period
of about 15 seconds, or
- switch off the ignition.
The delay in deactivating the camera prov ides an uninterrupted view
behind the vehicle especially when maneuvering in tight parking spaces and prevents the picture
from turning off the every time you
shift out of reverse.
If the warning message appears in the display but not the rear view
camera picture, read and confirm the warning message. The acoustic
distance signal is always active.*
If you press a function but ton on the MMI control console, the rear
view camera picture disappears. The rear view camera picture reap
pears the next time you park.
Further information on the warning message and the MMI control
console can be found in the MMI instruction booklet.

• T he shoulder belt part shou ld route approximate ly over the
middle of your shoulder -under no circumstances should it route over

& in "Safety belt position" on page 190.
• With the front seats, the height adjustment of the seat can also
be used to adjust the position of the safety belts. •
Improperly worn safety belts
Incorrectly positioned safety belts can cause severe inju
nes.
Wearing safety belts improperly can cause serious injury or
death. Safety belts can only work when they are correctly
positioned on the body . Improper seating positions reduce
the effectiveness of safety belts and will even increase the
ris k of injury and death by moving the safety belt to critical
areas of the body. Improper seating positions also increase
the risk of serious injury and death when an airbag deploys
and str ikes an occupant who is not in the correct seating posi
tion. A driver is responsible for the safety of all vehicle occu
pants and especially for children. Therefore:
- Never permit anyone to assume an incorrect sitting posi
tion in the vehicle while traveling

Safety belt pretensioners
How safety belt pretensioners work
In front, side and rear -end collisions above a particular
severity, safety belts are tensioned automatically.
Th e safety belts are equipped with safety belt p retensioners. The
system is activated by sensors in front, side and rear-end collisions of
great sever ity. This tightens th e be lt and ta kes up belt slack~
& in
"Service and disposal of safety belt pretens ioner". Taking up the slack
helps to reduce forward occ upan t movement during a coll is io n.
0 Note
Never let the bel t remain over a rear seat back that has been folded
forward.
[I) Tips
The safety belt pretensioner can only be act ivated once.
• In minor fronta l, side and rear -end collis ions, in a rollove r and in
acc idents involving very little impact force, the safety belt preten
sioner are not activated .
• When the safety belt pretensioners are activated, a fine dust is
re leased. This is norma l and is not ca used by a fire in the vehicle.
• The relevant safety requirements must be observed when the
vehicle o r components of the system a re scrapped. A q ual ified deal
ersh ip is familiar with these regulat ions and will be pleased to pass on
the information to you .

Chang ing the vehicle's suspension system can change the way that
t h e Advan ced Airbag System pe rforms in a cr ash . For e xamp le, usi ng
tire-rim combinations not app roved by Audi, lowering the vehicle,
c hang ing the stiffness o f th e suspension, incl uding the sp rings,
suspension struts, shock absorbers etc. can change the forces that
are meas ured by the a irbag sensors and sent to the ele ct ronic contro l
unit . Some suspension changes can, fo r exam ple, increase the force
levels measured by the senso rs and make the airbag system deploy in
crashes in which i t would not deploy if the changes had no t been
ma de . Other kinds of changes may reduce the force levels meas ured
by the sensors and p revent the airbag from dep loying when it should.
T he sensors in the safety belt b uckle for the drive r and front

& WARNING
Changing the vehicle's susp ension including use of unapproved
tire -rim combination s can change Advan ced Airbag performance
and increase the risk of serious personal injury in a crash .
• Never install suspension component s that do not have the
same performance characteristics as the components originally
installed on your vehicle.
• Ne ver use tire-rim combinations that have not been approved
by Audi.
& WARNING
Items stored between the safety belt buckle and the center
console can cause the sensors in the buckle to send the wrong
information to the electronic control module and prevent the
Advanced Airbag System from working properly.
• Always make sure that nothing can interfere with the safety

Side airbags
Description of side airbags

T he side airbags are located in t he sides of t he front seat backrests
~ fig. 185 and the rear backrest * facing the doors. They are ide nti
fie d by th e word "AIRBAG" .
The side airbag system basically consists of :
• the ele ctron ic cont rol mod ule and extern al side imp act se nsors
• the two side airbags located in t he sides of the front backrests
• two rear side airbags (as an o rde red
o p tion)
• the airbag wa rni ng light in the instr ument cluster .
Th e air bag sys tem is monitore d ele ct ronically to m ake ce rtain that it
is funct io ning properly at all times. Each t ime you turn on the igni
tion , the airb ag system indica tor light w ill come on fo r a few seconds
(self d iagnostics).
Th e side airbag sy stem sup plements the safety belts and can he lp to
re du ce the risk of inju ry to the dr ive r's, fron t and rear* passenger 's
upper torso on the side of the ve hicle that is struck in a side coll is ion.

is below the reference va lue programmed into the cont rol unit, the
side airba gs w ill no t be triggered, even though t he car may be b ad ly
damaged as a result of the collision. It is not possible to define an
airbag tr iggering range that w ill cover every possible angle of impact,
since the circumstances will vary considerably between one collision
and another . Important factors include, for example, the nature
(hard or soft) of the impacting object, the angle of impact, vehicle
speed, etc.~
page 213, "Important safety instructions on the side
airbag system" .
Aside from the ir normal safety function, safety be lts work to help
keep the d river or front passenger in posit ion in the event of a side
co llision so that the side airbags can provide protection.
The airbag system is
not a substitute for your safety belt. Rather, it is
part of the ove rall occupant restraint system in your veh icle. Always
remember that the side airbag system can only help to protect you if
you a re wearing your safety belt and wearing it p rope rly. This is
another reason why you shou ld always wear your safety belts, not just
because the law requires you to do so~
page 185, "General no tes" .
It is important to remembe r that wh ile the supp lemental s ide airbag
system is designed to reduce the likelihood of se rious injuries, ot her
injuries, fo r examp le, swe lling, bru ising, and minor abras ions can
also be associated with deployed side airbags . Remember too, side
airbags will dep loy only once and only in certai n kinds of accidents -
your safety belts are always there to offer protection.
Vehicle damage, repair costs or even the lack of veh icle damage a re
not necessar ily an ind ication of over-sensitive or failed airbag activa
t ion . In some collisions, both front a nd side airbags may inflate .
Remember too, that a irbags will deploy only once and only in certa in
kinds of collisions -your safety belts are a lways there to offer protec
tion in those acc idents in w hich airbags a re not supposed to deploy or
when they have already deployed.
The side airbag system will not deploy :
• when the ignition is turned off
• in side collisions when the acceleration measured by the sensor is
too low •
in front-end collis ions
• in rea r-end collisions
• in rollovers .
In some types of accidents the front a irbags, side curtain airbags and
side airbags may be triggered together.
& WARNING
• Safet y belts and the airbag s ystem will only provide protection
when o ccupants are in the proper seating position ~
page 213.
• If the airbag indicator light comes on when the vehicle i s being
used, have th e system inspe cted immediately by your authoriz ed
Audi dealer. The airbag may not work prope rly when the vehicle
a cceleration in a side collision is high enough to activate the
ai rb ag. •
How supplemental side airbags work
Side airbags deploy instantly and can help reduce the risk
of upper torso injuries for occupants who are pro perly
restrained.
