Adjusting the head restraints
- To move the hea d restraint up, hold it at the sides and
slide it upwar d unt il it la tches .
- To move the head restra int down , press the button©

Removing the head restraints
- Slide t he head restrai nt all th e way up.
- Press the release butto n© and pu ll the h ead restraint out
and cl ear o f the se at.
Installing the head restraints
-Slide t he posts on the head restraint down into the gu ides
until the posts c lick into p lace. You s hou ld not be ab le to
pull the head restraint out of the backrest.
So that the driver can have a better view to the rear, the head
restra in ts should be pushed down comple tely when t he rea r seats are
not occupied .
& WARNING
• Only remove the rear seat head restraint s when necessary in
order to in stall a child seat . In stall the head restraint again imme­
diately once the chi ld seat is removed. Driving w ithout head
restraint s or with head res traints that are not properly adjusted
increases the risk of serious or fatal neck injury dramatically .

Armrest

Please note that the driver's arm movements may be restricted with
t he arm rest folded down. For th is reason, t he armrest s ho ul d not be
folded down when driving in city traff ic. •

- Pull out and unfold the ski sack.
- Load skis or similar objects through the luggage compart-
ment into the interior of the vehicle~&.
Securing ski sack
- Insert the ski sack strap@~ page 86, fig. 80 in the
center buckle

- Pull the safety belt taut on the free end of the belt @.
Stowing ski sack
- Pull the ski sack through the rear backrest to the rear.
- In the passenger compartment, close the ski sack flap.
- Fold the ski sack carefully.
& WARNING
• The ski sack is intended only for the transportation of skis and
other light objects. To reduce the risk of serious personal injury
never transport heavy or pointed objects in the ski sack.
• When braking rapidly or during an accident the load could be
displaced and cause injury to occupants.
• Sharp edges on the load must be covered for protection.
Always fasten the belt tightly around the sack and its contents
=> page 86, fig. 80.
[ i] Tips
Never stow the ski sack away if it's wet or damp (for example, snow
melting from skis). Let it dry completely before you stow it away. •

A roof
rack can be fitted to carry additional luggage on
the roof
-Always read and follow the instructions provided by the
roof rack manufacturer when the roof rack system must
be installed.
If you are transporting luggage or other objects on the roof, please
note the following:
• Your vehicle has specially designed aerodynamic roof rails. Only
install a roof rack specifically designed for your model. Contact the
nearest Audi dealer for information on approved modular roof racks
for your vehicle .
• These approved roof racks are the basis for a complete roof rack
system. Additional attachments for the basic roof rack are necessary
to safely transport luggage, bicycles, surf boards, skis or small boats.
All necessary hardware for these systems is available at your autho­
ri zed Audi dealer .
• We recommend that you keep the installation instructions for
your roof rack system together with your Owner's literature in the
vehicle.
When should the roof rack be removed?
• Before going through an automatic car wash (it is best to ask the
car wash operator for advice).
• When not in use, to reduce fuel consumption, wind noise and to
guard against theft. _,,,

turer of the roof rack system.
& WARNING
Weak, damaged or improper straps used to secure items to the
roof rack can fail during hard braking or in a collision and cause
serious personal injury.
• Make
sure the roof rack is installed exactly as specified above
=> page 88.
• Always use suitable mounting straps for securing items to the
roof rack to help prevent items from shifting or flying forward.
• Items on the roof rack must always be securely mounted.
• The use of a roof rack can negatively affect the way a vehicle
handles . Cargo that is large, heavy, bulky , long or flat will have a
greater negative influence on the vehicle's aerodynamics , center
of gravity and overall handling. Always drive slowly, avoid sudden
braking and maneuvers when transporting cargo on the roof of
your vehicle.
• Never exceed the maximum permissible load carrying capacity
of the roof of your vehicle, the permissible axle weights and the
permissible total weight of your vehicle=>

Connecting an appliance
-Remove cigarette lighter.
- Plug in appliance to be used.
The socket of the cigarette lighter may be used for 12 -volt app liances
w ith maximum consumption of up to 100 watts, such as a flash light,
small vacuum cleaner, etc.
Before you purchase any accessories, always read and follow the

Improper use of the cigarette lighter can cause serious injury or
start a fire.
• Be careful when using the cigarette lighter. If you do not pay
attention to what you are doing when you are using the cigarette
lighter you can burn yourself .
• The cigarette lighter and socket remain functional even if the
i gnition is switched off or the ignition key is removed. Never leave
children inside the vehicle without supervision.

• To avoid damag ing the socket, only use plugs that fit properly.
• Only use the cigarette lighter socket as a power source for elec­
t rical accessories for short durat ions. Use the sockets in the vehicle
when a power source is needed for longer durations .

Outlet
The outlet in the front and rear center console may be

vision .
• The coat hooks must only be used for lightweight clothing. Do
not leave any heavy or sharp edged objects in the pockets which
may interfere with the side curtain airbag deployment and can
cause personal injury in a crash.
• Do not use coat hangers for hanging clothing on the coat hooks
as this can interfere with proper deployment of the side curtain
airbags in an accident.
• Do not hang heavy objects on the coat hooks, as they could
cause personal injury in a sudden stop. •

Automatic safety belt retractors
Every safety be lt is equipped with an automatic be lt retractor on the
shoulder bel t. This fea ture locks the be lt whe n the belt is pulled out
fast, during hard braking and in an acc ident. The belt may also lock
w hen you dr ive up or dow n a s teep hill or throug h a sharp curve.
During norma l dr iving the belt lets you move freely.
Safety belt pretensioners
The safety bel ts are equipped w ith a belt pretensioner that helps to
t ighten the s afety be lt and remove sla ck when the pre tensioner is
act ivated. The function of the pretensioner is monitored by a warn ing
light =>
page 14.
Switchable locking featu re

Improperly positio ned safety belts can cause serious injury in a n
accident =>

• Safety belts offer optimum p rote ction onl y when the seat back
i s upright and belts are properly positioned on the body .
• Always make sure th at the rear seat backre st to which the
center rear safety b elt is attached i s securely latched whenever the
rear center safety belt is being used. If the ba ckrest is not securely
latch ed, the passenger will move forward with the ba ckrest during
sudden br aking, in a s udden maneu ve r and e speci ally in a crash.

• Never atta ch the safety belt to the buckle fo r another seat.
Attaching the b elt to the w rong buckle will reduce safety belt
effecti veness and can cause serious personal injury.
• A pass enger who is not properly restr ained can be seriou sly
injured by the safety belt it self when it move s from the stronger
parts of th e body into critical areas like the abdomen.

securing a child safety seat in the vehicle=>

& WARNING
Damage to the front passenger seat can prevent the front airbag
from working properly.
• Imprope r repair or disassembly of the front passenger and
driver seat will prevent the Advan ced Airbag System from func­
tioning properly.
• Repairs to the front passenger seat must be performed by qual­
ified and properly trained workshop personnel.
• Never remove the front passenger or driver seat from the
vehicle.
• Never remove the upholstery from the front passenger seat.
• Never disassemble or remove parts from the seat or disconnect
wires from it .
• Never carry sharp objects
in your pockets or place them on the
seat. If the weight-sensing mat in the passenger seat is punctured
it cannot work properly .
• Never carry th ings on your lap or carry objects on the passenger
seat . Such items can increase the weight regi stered by the weight­
sensing mat and send the wrong information to the airbag control
unit.
• Never store items under the front passenger seat. Parts of the
Advanced Airbag System under the passenger seat could be damaged, preventing them and the airbag system from working
properly.
• Never place seat covers or replacement upholstery that have
not been specifically approved by Audi on the front seats.
• Seat covers can prevent the Advanced Airbag System from
recognizing child restraint s or occupants on the front passenger
seat and prevent the side airbag in the seat backrest from
deploying properly .

• Never use cushions , pillows, blankets or similar items on the
front passenger seat . The additional padding will prevent the
weight-sensing mat in the seat from accurately registering the
c hild restraint or person on the seat and prevent the Advanced
Airbag System from functioning prope rly.
• If you must use a child restraint on the front passenger seat
and the child restraint manufacturer's instructions require the use
of a towel, foam cushion or something else to properly pos ition
the child restraint, make certain that the PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF light come s on and stays on whenever the child re straint is
installed on the front passenger seat.
• If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not come on and
stay on, immediately install child restraint in a rear seating posi­
tion and have the airbag system inspe cted by your Audi dealer. •
How the Advanced Airbag System
components work together
Th e fron t Advanced A irbag System and t he side airbags sup plemen t
the protect ion offered by the front three-po int safety belts with
prete nsioners and load limiters a nd t he adjusta ble head restra ints to
help reduce the risk of i njur y in a w ide range of acc ident and crash
situ ati ons. Be sure to re ad the important info rmat io n a bou t safe ty
and heed the WAR NINGS in this chapte r.
Deployment of the Adv a need Airbag System and the a ct iva tion of t he
sa fety belt pretens ioners depend on the dece leration measured by
the c rash sensors and reg istered by the e lectron ic contro l un it. Crash
sever ity depe nds on speed and deceleration as well as the mass and
st iffness of t he ve hicle or object invo lved in the crash.
Whe n the ele ct ronic con tro l u nit r egi sters a low sever ity crash and
the safety be lt is being used, the airbag will not dep loy . If the safety
bel t is not being used, the fi rs t st age de ploys, followed by the second
stage after a much later time in the crash seq uence. IJ,,

the weight-sensing mat to measure more weight than is actua lly on
t he seat.
If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light still does not come on and
does not stay on cont inuous ly (when the ignition is switched on),
• t ake the child res tra int off the fr ont p assenger seat an d ins ta ll it
properly at one of t he rear seat positions. Have the a irbag system
inspec ted by yo ur Aud i d ea le r imme diat ely.
• move the child to a rea r seat position and ma ke s ure that the child
is properly res trained in a c hild rest rain t th at i s appr opriate fo r its
size and age .
T he
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light shou ld NOT come on when the
ignition is on a nd an adult is sitt ing in a proper sea ting pos ition on the
front passenger seat. If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes on
and s tays on o r flashes fo r abo ut 5 seconds while d riving, unde r these
circumstances, make sure that:
• t he adul t on the front passenger se at is pro perly seate d on the
center of the seat cushi on with his or her back up against the backrest
an d t he bac krest is not reclined => page 176, "Proper occ upan t
seating posit ions",
• t he adult is not tak ing weig ht o ff t he sea t by holding on to th e
passenge r assist handle above the front passe nger door or
supporti ng their weight on the armrest,
• the safety belt is be ing properly wor n and that there is not a lot of
s la ck in th e s afe ty be lt webb ing,
• accessory seat cove rs or cushions o r othe r th ings that may ca use
an in co rre ct re ading o r impre ss io n on th e weigh t-sensin g m at un der
the upholstery of the seat have been removed from the front
p as senge r se at,
• a sa fety be lt extender has not been left in th e safety belt latch for
th e fr ont pas senger se at.

Important safety instructions on
monitoring the Advanced Airbag System
& WARNING
An airbag system that is not functioning properly cannot provide
supplemental protection in a frontal crash.
• If the airbag indicator light comes on, it means that there may
be something wrong with the Advanced Airbag System.
It is
possible that the airbag will inflate when it is not supposed to, or
will not inflate when it should.
• Have the airbag system inspected immediately by your Audi
dealer.
& WARNING
• If the front airbag inflates, a child without a child restraint , or
in a rearward-facing child safety seat, or in a forward-facing child
restraint that has not been properly installed will be seriously
injured and can be killed.
• Even though your vehicle is equipped with an Advanced Airbag
System, make certain that all children, especially 12 years and
younger, always r ide on the back seat properly restrained for their
age and size.
• Always install forward or rear-facing child safety seats on the
rear seat -even with an Advanced Airbag System.
• If you must install a rearward-facing child safety seat on the
front passenger seat because of exceptional circumstances and
the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not appear and stay on, immediately install the rear-facing child safety seat in a rear
