transport fue l to use for your lawn mower,
snow blower, etc., be very careful and al­
ways observe local and state laws regard­
ing the use, transportat ion and storage of
such fuel containers . Make certain the con­
tainer meets industry standards (A NSI/
AS TM F852 -86) .
(D Note
Never drive your vehicle unti l the fuel tank
is completely d ry. The irreg ular s upply of
fuel can cause misfir ing. Gasoline cou ld
e nte r into the exhaust system and damage
t he cata lytic conve rter.

When adding fue l, the ignition and any ce llu­
lar phones in the vehicle must be sw itched
off .
Tak ing the fuel cap off
• To open the fuel filler flap, pull the button

• Unscrew fuel filler cap counter-clockwise
and hang it o n the fuel filler flap ¢

Refuelling procedure
• Insert the f uel no zz le from the gasoline
pump into the fuel fi ller neck as far as it w ill
go .
• Select a med ium refuelling rate so that the
no zz le sw itches off automatically when the
tank i s full.
Putting the fuel cap back on
• After fi lling your tank, twist the fuel filler
cap clockw ise until you hear a definite click.
• Close the fue l filler flap.
T o avoid fuel s pill ing or evaporating from the
fuel tank always close fuel filler cap properly and completely . An improperly closed fuel fi ll­
er cap may also cause the MIL lamp¢
page 30
to come on.
A WARNING
Imp roper refue ling or handling of fuel can
cause fire, explosion and severe burns.
- Fue l is highly flammable and can cause
severe burns and other injur ies .
- Fai lure to shut the engine off while refu­
eling and/or to insert the pump nozzle
fu lly into the fuel filter neck could cause
fuel to spray out of filler neck or to ove r­
f low. Fuel spray and overflowing fuel can
cause a fire.
- Never use a ce llu lar telephone whil e re­
fue ling . Th e e lec tromagnet ic radiat io n
can cause spa rks th at can igni te fuel v a­
pors an d cause a fire.
- N ever get back in to your vehicle whi le re­
fue ling.
If in excep tio nal cir cumstances
you must get back in your vehi cle while
ref ueling, make ce rtain that you close
the door and touch metal to discharge
static electricity be fore touching the fill­
er nozzle again . Static e lectr icity can
cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors
re leased d uring refueling .
- Never smoke or have an open f lame any­
where in or near your ve hicle when refu­
eling or fi lling a portable fue l conta iner .

-For your safety, we strongly recommend
that you do not trave l w ith a portab le
fuel container in your vehicle. The con­
tainer, full or empty may leak and cou ld
cause a fire, especially in a crash.
- If, under except ional circumstances, you
must transpo rt a portable fuel container,
please observe the following:
- Never f ill a portable fue l container
while it is anywhere in or on the vehicle (for examp le, in the luggage compart­
ment, or on the tr unk) . Static electric i­
ty can bu ild up while f illing and ca n ig­
n ite fuel vapors causing a f ire.
- Always place a portable fuel container
on the ground before filling .
-Always keep the fi ller nozzle comp lete­
ly inside the portable conta iner before
a nd during filling.
- If filling a portable container made of metal, the filler nozz le must always be
in contact with the containe r. Th is w ill
he lp prevent static electricity from dis­
charging and cause a fi re.
- Never sp ill fuel inside the vehicle or
luggage compartment. Fuel vapors are
h ighly flammable.
- Always observe local and state/p rov in­
cial laws regard ing the us e, storage
and trans po rt ation of fuel con tainers.
- Make certa in the fuel conta iner meets
in du stry standards (ANSI/ ASTM
F8 52-86).

If any fuel has spilled onto the ca r, it
should be remov ed immed iate ly to prevent
damage to the paint.

As soon as the correctly operated nozzle sw itches off automatically fo r the fi rs t
time, th e tank is full. Do not try to add
more fue l because fuel may spill ou t. In
a dd ition, the exp ansio n sp ace in the fuel

- Running y our eng ine wh ile ref ue lli ng
may cause va pors to esca pe or even fuel
to spill out of the tank . This would then
shut o ff th e f ue l nozz le before the tank
is f ull.
- Do not refue l you r vehicle with the ig ni­
t ion switched on. The fuel ga uge may
ot herwise not ind icate the correct fue l
level after refuel ling.
Unlocking the fuel filler flap
by hand
You can open the fuel filler flap by hand if the
power locking system should fail .

If the power locking system shou ld fa il, you
can still open the flap man ua lly:
.. Open the rear lid .
.. Open the round cover in the right-side inte­
r ior trim .
.. Remove the red plastic knob from its retain­
er.
.. Pull the plastic cord in the d irection of the
arrow to unlock the fuel fi ller flap

The engine hood is released from inside the
vehicle.

Before opening the engine hood, make sure
that the windshie ld wipers are flat against the
windshie ld. Otherwise, they cou ld damage the
pa int on the hood.

-Hot engine coolant can burn you.
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam

coolant can be seen o r heard before care­
fu lly opening the hood.
Closing the engine hood
.. Pull the hood down until the pressure from
the struts is reduced .
.. Let the hood
drop down and latch in p lace.
Do not try to push it shut; it may fail to en­
gage

A WARNING

A hood that is not completely latched
could fly up and b lock your view while dr iv­
i ng.
- When you close the engine hood, check it
to make sure the safety catch has proper­
ly engaged . The hood should be flush
with the surrounding vehicle body parts.
- If you notice while dr iv ing that the hood
is not secured properly, stop at once and
close it.
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in
the engine compartment!
Wheneve r you must pe rform any wo rk in the
eng ine compartment, for e xample chec king
and filling the different fluids, ther e is a risk
of injury, burns and a ccident s. To prevent
p ers onal injury al ways obs erv e the following
WARNINGS. The eng in e c ompartm ent of an y
vehicl e is a hazardou s area!

To he lp avoid injury, before yo u check any­
thing under the hood:
- Sw itch off the engine .
- Remove the ignition key.

Before you check anything in the engine com­
partment,
alwa ys r ea d and heed all WARN­
INGS ¢ A in Working in the engine compart­
ment on page 180.
• Park your vehicle on a level surface.
• Switch the ignition off.
• Read the coolant level at the coolant expan­
s ion tank ¢
page 182, fig . 134. With a cold
engine, it must be above the "min" mark .
With a hot engine, it ca n be a little above
the indicated range .
The location of the coolant expans ion tank
can be seen in the engine compartment illus­
tration
¢ page 182.
To obtain an accurate read ing, the engine
must be switched off.
The expansion tank in yo ur vehicle is equipped
with an e lectric coolant level sensor .
When the coo lant level is too low, the warning
light in the A uto- Check System ¢
page 16 will
illuminate until yo u add coo lant and the level
has been restored to normal. Even though
there is an electric coo lant level sensor, we
still recommend you check the coolant leve l
from time to time .
Coolant loss
Coolant loss may indicate a leak in the cooling
system . In the event of coolant loss, the cool­
ing system should be inspected immediately
by your author ized Audi dealer. It is not
enough merely to add coolant .
In a
sealed system, losses can occur only if
the boiling point of the coolant is exceeded as
a result of overheat ing.
(D Note
Do not add any type of radiator lea k seal­
ant to your vehicle's eng ine coolant. Add­
ing radiator repair f luid may adversely af­
fect the function and performance of your
cooling system and could res ult in damage
not covered by your New Vehicle Limited
Warranty.
Adding coolant
Be very careful when adding engine coolant.
Before you check anyth ing in the engine com­
partment,
always read and heed all WARN­
INGS ¢ A in Working in the engine compart­
ment on page 180 .
• Turn off the engine.
• Let the engine cool down.
• Place a thick rag over t he coo lant expansion
tank
¢ page 187, fig . 138 a nd carefully
tw ist the cap counter-clockwise ¢&_ .
• Add coo la nt.
• Twis t the cap on aga in
t ightly.
Replacement engine coolant must conform to
exact spec ificat ions ¢
page 18 7, Coolant.
Even in a n emerge ncy, if coolant add i-
t ive G1 2++, G12+ or G12 is not ava ilable , do
not use a d iffe ren t addit ive. Use plain water
instead unti l you can get the cor rect additive
and can restore the correct ratio . This sho uld
be done as soon as possible .
If you have los t a considerab le amount o f
coolant , then you sho uld add cold ant ifreeze
and co ld wate r on ly w hen the engine is cold.
Alw ays use
new engine coo la nt whe n refilling .
Do not fill coola nt above the "MAX" mark. Ex­
cess coola nt wi ll be fo rced o ut through the
pressure relief valve in t he cap w hen the en­
gine becomes hot.
,&. WARNING ~ -
- T he cooling system is under pressure and
can get very hot. Reduce the risk of
scalding from hot coolant by followi ng
these steps.
- T urn off the engine and allow it to coo l
down.
- Protect yo ur face, hands and arms from
escaping fluid and steam by covering
the cap w ith a large, t hick rag.
- T urn the cap s lowly a nd ve ry carefully
in a counter-clo ckwise direction while
applying light, downward pres sure on
the top of the cap.

If the brake fluid level falls considerably b e­
l ow the "MIN" mark, the brake warning/ indi­
cator light (U .S . mode ls:
1111 , Canad ian
model s:. ) will come on
c> page 14 . Do not
continue to ope ra te the vehicle. The comple te
brake system shou ld be thoroughly checked
by an author ized Audi dealer or ot her quali­
fied fac ility and the cause corrected . If the
b rake fluid level is too low, the b rake war ning/
i ndicator ligh t w ill illuminate. Contact an a u­
thor ized A udi dealer
immediatel y.
Changing brake fluid
Hove the broke fluid changed by on experi­
enced technician.
Brake fl uid abso rbs moist ure from the a ir. If
the wate r content in the b ra ke fluid is too
h igh, cor ros ion in the br ake sys tem may result
after a per iod of t ime . The bo iling point of the
brake fluid wi ll also decrease considerab ly and
decrease braking performanc e.
Therefore, the brake fl uid mus t be changed
every tw o year s. Always use new b rake fluid
which conforms to Federal Motor Veh icle
Standard "FMVSS 1 16 DOT 4".
The brake flu id rese rvoi r can be difficul t to
r each, therefo re , we recommend that yo u
have the brake f luid changed by yo ur autho r­
ized
Audi dealer. Your dea ler has the correct
too ls , the right brake f luid and the know-how
to do this for you.
A WARNING
- Brake fluid is poiso nous . It must be stor­
ed only i n the closed orig inal container
o ut o f the reac h of children!
- Brake fa ilure can result from old o r inap ­
propriate b rake fluid . Observe these pre­
caut ions :
- Use only bra ke fluid that meets SAE
specif ication
J 1 703 and co nforms to
Federal Motor Vehicle Standard 116 .
Always check with your a uthori zed Audi
dealer to ma ke sure you are using the
correct brake flu id. The correct type of brake flu
id is also ind icate d on the
brake f lu id rese rvoir.
- The brake fluid must be new. Heavy use
of the brakes can cause a vapo r lock if
the brake fluid is left in the system too
long. This can seriously affect the effi­
c iency of t he brakes as well as your
safety . T his co uld resu lt in a n accide nt.

Brake fluid will damage the paint of your
vehicle.
@ For the sake of the environment
Because o f the prob lem of proper disposal
of brake fluid as well as the spec ial too ls
required and the necessary expertise, we
recomme nd that you have the brake flu id
changed by yo ur autho rize d Aud i deale r.
Battery
General information
Your vehicle is equipped with a specia l bat ­
tery, an
ACM battery. This battery is located
in the luggage compartment and must be re­
placed with an origina l equipment battery .
U nder normal opera ting condit ions, the bat­
te ry is
maintenance-fr ee .
Have the battery checked when you take your
vehicle in for serv ice . You a re well advised to
replace a battery that is o lde r th an 5 years .
Disconnecting the battery terminals
Some vehicle functions (power window reg u­
lators, for example) are lost if the battery te r­
mina ls are disconnected . T hese functions have
to be relearned after the battery termina ls are
connected again . T o p revent t his, t he battery
shou ld only be disconne cted from the veh icle
elect ric a l sys tem when abso lutely ne cessary
f or rep air s.
Vehicles not driven for long periods
If you do not drive your vehicle ove r a period
of seve ral days o r weeks , e lectr ica l compo-
nents a re g radually cut back or switched off.

forget the spare tire. If the press ure in any tire
is too high when the tire is "cold," let air out
of the tire slowly with the edge of the t ire
gauge and keep checking the pressure until
you reach the pressure that is correct for the
load (passengers and luggage) and kind of
driving you plan to do .
If the pressure in any tire is too low, note the
d ifference between the pressure in the cold
tire and the pressure you need and add the a ir
that you need to reach the correct pressure for
the veh icle load (passengers and luggage) for
the tires on your veh icle as listed on the on
your ve hicle and in this manua l and the kind
of dr iving you p lan to do .
Never exce ed the ma ximum inflation pres ­
s ur e listed on t he tire s idewall for any re a­
s on.
Remember that the vehicle manufacturer , not
the t ire manufacturer , determ ines the correct
tire pressure for the tires on your veh icle .
It is important to check the tire pressure when
the t ires a re cold .
- Read the req uired tire press ure from the tire
pressure label located on driver's s ide B-pil­
l ar .
- Turn the valve stem cap counter-clockwise
to remove it from the tire valve .
- Place the air pressure ga uge on the valve.
- The tire pressures sho uld on ly be checked
and adjusted when the tires are cold . The
s light ly raised pressures of warm tires must
not be reduced.
- Adjust the tire pressure to the load you are
carrying.
- Re insta ll the va lve stem cap on the valve .
When should I check the tire pressure?
The correct tire pressure is espec ially impo r­
tant at high speeds . The pressure sho uld
therefore be checked at least once a month
and a lways befo re starting a journey.
When should I adjust the tire pressures?
Adj ust the tire pressu re to the load you are
carry ing . After changi ng a wheel
or replacing

whee ls yo u have to adjust the ti re p ressu res
o n all whee ls. In addition, yo u m ust then initi­
a lize the new tire pressu res in the t ire pres­
s u re monitoring system

A WARNING
Incorrect tire pressures and/or underinfla­
tion can lead sudden tire fa ilure, loss of
control, collision, serio us pe rsonal injury
or even death.
- When the warning symbol
[I] appears in
the instrument cluster, stop and inspect
the t ires.
- Inco rrect tire pressure and/or underinfla­
tion can cause increased tire wea r and
can affect the handling of the vehicle and
stopping ability.
- Inco rrect tire pressures and/or underin­
flation can a lso lead to sudden t ire fail­
ure, including a blowou t and su dden de­
flation, ca using loss of veh icle cont ro l.
- Th e drive r is responsi ble for the correc t
tire pressures for all tires on the veh icle.
The applicable pressure values a re locat ­
ed on a sticke r on the dr iver's side B-pil­
lar.
- On ly when all tires on the vehicle are fil ­
led to the correct pressure, the t ire pres­
sure mon itor ing system can work cor­
rectly.
- The use of incorrect tire pressu re va lues
can lead to acc idents or other damage.
Therefore it is essential that the driver
observe the spec ified t ire pressure values
for the tires and the correct pressures for
the function of th e ti r e p ressu re monito r­
ing system.
- Always inf late tires to the recommended
a nd correct t ire p ress ure before dr iv ing
off.
- Driving with unde rinflated tir es bend
mo re, letting t hem get too hot resulting
in tre ad separation, sudden tire f ailure
and loss of cont rol.
- Exces sive speed and/overloading can
cause he at bu ild- up, sudden tire failure
an d loss of cont rol. •

Driving with different tires reduces vehi­
cle handling and can lead to a loss of
co ntrol.
- If the spare tire is not the same as the
t ires that are mounted on the veh icle -
for example with winter tires - on ly use
the spare tire for a short period of time
and dr ive with extra ca re. Refit the nor­
ma l road whee l as soon as safely possi­
ble.
- Never drive faste r than the maximum
speed for which the tires o n your veh icle
are ra ted because ti res th at are driven
faster than their rated speed can fail
sudden ly .
- Over loading t ires c ause heat b uild- up,
sudden tire failure, including a blowout
and sudden deflation and loss of control.
- T emperature grades app ly to tires t hat
are properly inflated and not over o r un­
derinflated.
- F or technical reasons it is not a lways
possible to use wheels from other
vehicles -in some cases not even w heels
from the same vehicle model.
- If you insta ll wheel trim discs on t he ve­
hicle whee ls, make sure that the air f low
to the brakes is not blocked. Reduced air­
flow to the brakes can them to overheat, increasing stopping distances and caus­
ing a collision.
- Run flat t ires may on ly be used on
vehicles that were equ ipped w it h them
at the facto ry. The vehicle must have a
chassis des igned for run f lat t ires and a
fac to ry-installed t ire p ress ure moni to r­
ing system that ind ic a tes a loss of tire
pressure. Incorrect use of run flat tires
can lead to vehicle damage or accidents .
Check with an a uth orized Audi dea ler or
t i re spec ialist to see i f your vehicle can be
equipped with run flat tires. If r un flat
t ires a re used, they must be installed on
all four wheels . M ixing tire types is not
permitted . (D Note
-For technical reasons, it is not generally
poss ible to use the w heel rims from oth­
er ve hicles. T his can hold tr ue for wheels
of the same vehicle type.
- If the spare tire is diffe rent from the
tires that you have mounted on your ve­
hicle (for example winter tires or wide
profi le tires), then use the spare tire for a
short period of time only and drive w ith
extra care. Replace the flat tire w it h the
ti re mat ching the othe rs on your vehicle
as soon as possi ble.
- N ever d rive without the valve stem cap.

All passenger car ti res must conform to Feder­
al Safety Req uirements in add ition to these
grades .
Tread wear
The tread wear g rade is a comparative rating
based on the wear rate of the tire when tested
u nder contro lled conditions o n a specified
government test course.
F o r example, a tire gra ded 150 wo uld wear
one and one ha lf (11/2) times as well on the
government course as a ti re graded 100.

Winter tires have maximum speed limits
that may be lower than your vehicle's max­
imum speed . Always know the maximum
speed before driving off . Never drive faster
than the speed permitted for your specific
w inter t ires. This will cause damage to the
tires leading to an accident and serious
pe rsonal inj ury to you and your passen­
gers .

Driving faster than the maximum speed
for which the winter tires on your vehicle
were designed can cause tire fai lure in­
cluding a blowout and sudden deflat ion,
loss of control, crashes and serious per­
sonal injuries. Have worn or damaged tires
rep laced immed iate ly .
- Winter tires have maximum speed rat ing
that may be lower than your veh icle's
maximum speed .
- Never drive faster than the speed for
w hich the winter or other tires installed
on your vehicle are rated.
A WARNING
Always adjust your d riving to the road and
traffic conditions. Neve r let the good ac­
celeration of the wi nte r t ir es and all-whee l
dr ive temp t you in to taking extr a ris ks . A l­
ways remember :
- Whe n bra king , a n a ll-wheel d rive vehicle
hand les in the same way as a front drive
vehicle.
- Drive caref ully and reduce your speed on
icy and slippery roads, even winter tires
cannot he lp under black ice conditions.

Use summer tires when weather condi­
tions permit. They are qu ieter, do not wear
as quickly and reduce fuel consumption.
Snow chains
Snow cha ins may be f itted only to the front
whee ls, and only to certain tire sizes . Ask your
autho rized Aud i dealer on which tire sizes
snow c hains ca n be used.
If you are go ing to use snow chains, then you
must install them on the front whee ls at
least.
The snow chains must have low-prof ile links
and must not be t hicker than 0.53 inch
(13.5 mm), includ ing the lock .
Remove whee l center covers and trim discs
before putt ing snow cha ins on your vehicle
c::> Q) . For safety reasons cover caps must then
be fitted over the wheel bolts . These are ava il ­
able from autho rized Aud i dealers .
A WARNING
Using the wrong snow chai ns for your veh i­
cle o r ins ta ll ing them in correct ly can in­
crease the risk o f loss of cont ro l leading to
se rious personal injury.
- Snow chains are available in different
sizes. Always make sure to follow the i n­
structions provided by the snow chain manufacturer .
- When driving with snow cha ins never
d rive faster than the speed permitted for
your specific snow chains.
- Always observe local regulations .

roads not covered with snow to avoid
damaging tires and wearing the snow
chains down unnecessa rily.
- Snow chains, which come in to direc t con­
tact with the whee l rim, can scratch or

What should I be
aware of when
changing a tire?
General information
The following sections will provide you with
important information on how to change a
tire using the vehicle tool kit.
However, we recommend that you have a
qualified service center change the tire and
perform all work associated with changing it .
Wheels with cap-covered wheel bolts
Applies to vehicles: with cap-covered whee l bolts
The caps must be removed first from the
wheel bolts before the bolts can be un­
screwed .

• Push the plastic clip provided with the on­
board tool kit down over the wheel bolt cap

• Pull on the properly engaged

Refitting
• Place the caps over the wheel bolts and
push them back in.
The caps are there to protect and keep the
wheel bolts clean.
Decorative wheel covers
Applies to vehicles: with decorative wheel covers
The decorative wheel covers must be removed
first to access the wheel bolts .

• Fit the wheel bolt wrench over the wheel
bolt and push it down as far as it will go.
• Close your grip around the
end of the
wrench handle for maximum torque and
turn the wheel bolts

-Position the vehicle jack only at the
designated lifting points and align the
jack. Otherwise, the vehicle jack could slip and cause an injury if it does not
have sufficient ho ld on the vehicle.
- A soft or unstab le surface under the
jack may cause the vehicle to slip off the jack. Always prov ide a firm base for
the jack on the ground.
If necessary,
use a sturdy board un der the ja ck .
- On hard, slippery surfac e (such as tiles)
use a rubber mat o r similar to prevent
the j ack fr om s lipp ing.

- Do not raise the vehicle unti l yo u are
sure the jack is sec urely engaged.
- Passenge rs must not rema in in the ve­
h icle when it is jac ked up .
- Make sure that passen gers wait in a
safe p lace away from the vehicle and
well away from the roadway and traffic.
- Make sure jack position is correct, ad­
just as necessary and then contin ue to
ra ise the jack.

Taking the wheel off
Follow these instructions step -by -step for
changing the wheel.

After you have loosened all wheel bo lts and
raised the vehicle off the ground, pe rform t he
fo llowing steps to remove and replace the
wheel:
Removing the wheel
.,. Use the
hexagonal s ocket in the screwdri v·
er handle
to completely tur n out the top ­
most whee l bolt and set it aside on a
clean
surface c;, fig. 162.
.,. Screw the threaded end of the alignment
pin from t he too l kit hand-t ight into t he
now vacant bolt hole

.,. Then completely unscrew the other wheel
bolts as desc ribed above.

Putting on the wheel
.,. Lift the spa re wheel and carefully s lide it
over the alignmen t pin to g uide it in place

.,. Use the he xagonal socke t in the screwdr iver
h and le to screw in and tig hten all whee l
bolts
slightly .
.,. Unscrew the alignment pin and insert and
tighten the remaining whee l bolt slightly
like the rest .
.,. Turn the jack handle co unte r-clockwise to
lower the vehicle until the jack is fully re­
leased .
.,. Use the wheel bo lt wrench to tighten all
wheel bo lts firm ly
