-The engine compartment of any motor
vehicle is a potentially hazardous area.
Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, stop the engine and let it
cool down. Always exercise extreme cau­
t ion when working under the hood

ther with a red symbol (pr iority 1 -Dan­
ger!) or with a yellow symbol (pr iority 2 -
Warn ing).
Overview
Some ind icator lights tu rn on briefly to che ck
the func tion of that system when yo u switch
the ignition on. These systems are marked
with a./ in the following tables. If one of
these ind icator lights does not turn on, there
is a malfunction in that system.

If you have a malfunction in the safety sys ­
tems, contact your authorized Audi dealer
immediate ly. Otherw ise the safety sys­
tems may not work properly in an acci­
dent.
~ Safety belt warning light
App lies to vehicles: with safety belt warning light
The warning light is a reminder to fasten
safety belts.
The warning light . comes on for a few sec ­
onds after the ignition is switched on as a re­
minder to fasten your safety be lt.

0 Generator
This warning/indicator light detects a mal­
function in the generator or in the vehicle's
electrical system .
The. warning/ind icator light illuminates
when yo u switch on the ignit ion and must go
out after the engine has started .
I f the . warning/indicator light illum inates
while you are driving, yo u should contact you r
author ized Audi dealer. Since the veh icle bat­
tery is discha rging, you should switch
off any
unnecessary electrical consumers (for exam ­
p le, the air conditioner).
~ Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol
requires immediate service or repair.
I f the . symbol appears in the display and
flashes, the oil pressure is too low . In addition
to the symbo l, the following message a lso ap­
pears in the d isp lay:
S wi tch off en gin e! Oil pr essure is t oo low
• Pull off the road and stop the vehicle .
• Shut the engine down.
• Check the eng ine oil level¢
page 185.
• Contact your authorized Audi dealer for as-
sistance if necessary .
Engine oil level too low
If the engine oil level is too low , top off oil to
t h e proper level

If the . symbol starts flashing again even
though the eng ine oil level checks OK on the
dipstick,
do not start dri ving again and d o

A malfunction in the engine cooling system
must be repaired as soon as possible .

then either the engine coolant

• Pull off the road and stop the veh icle.
• Turn
off the engine.
• Check coolant level

radiator fan may be the cause of the malfunc­

- If your vehicle should break down for
mechanical or other reasons, park at a
safe distance from moving traffic, turn
off the engine and turn on the hazard

steam or coolant escap ing from the en­
gine compartment - you risk being scald­
ed . Wait until you can no longe r see or
hear steam or coo lant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any ve hicle
is a da ngerous a rea. Before you perfo rm
any wor k in the engine compartment,
turn off the engi ne and a llow i t to cool.

@ Electro-mechanical power assist
If the indicator lig ht illuminates w hile you are
driving, there is a malfunction in the electro­
mechanical steering. If the ind icator light is
show ing ,£"~ . there may be a reduction in pow­
er steering assist. If the ind icator light is
show ing . , there may be a total loss of pow­
e r steering assist. The stee ring m ust be in­
spected immediately by a qua lified wor kshop
¢ ,&. .With the engine no t running (e.g. when
the car is being towed), there is a lso no power
assist avai lab le .
A WARNING
-
If there is a ma lf u nction, the indicator
light for the electro-mechanical power as­
sist illuminates. Seek professional assis­
tance.
~ Clutch pedal
App lies to vehicles: wit h manual transmiss ion
T he ind icator light [~l ill uminates if you do
not press the clu tch pedal when s ta rting the
engine. For safety reasons, the eng ine will on ­
ly start when the clutch peda l is pressed.
;;,I C; Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
If the hJ indicator lamp blinks while dr iv ing,
the ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Regu lation) is active ­
ly regulating .
If the
G! indicator lamp illuminates, the sys­
tem has switched the ESC off. In th is case, you
can switch the ignition off and then on to
switch the ESC on again. The system is func­
t ion ing complete ly when the ind icator lamp
swi tches off.
If the
I) indicator lamp illuminates, the ESC
was switched off w ith the
[ru button .
Stabilization program and AB S fault! See
owner 's manual
If the G! indicator lamp and the [I] ABS indi­
cator lamp illum inate and the driver message
appears, the ABS or electron ic different ia l lock
is malfunct io ning . This also interrupts the
ESC. The brakes still function with their nor ­
mal power, but ABS is not active.
Drive to your authori zed A udi dealer immedi­
ate ly to have the malfunction corrected .

dations
Why is your seat adjustment so
important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can
only provide maximum protection if the front
seats are correctly adjusted.
There are various ways of adjust ing the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger . Adjust
your seat properly so that :
- you can easily and quick ly reach all the
switches and controls in the instrument
panel
-your body is prope rly supported thus reduc­
ing physical stress and fatigue
- the safety be lts and airbag system can offer
maximum protection

In the following sec tions, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust you r seats .
There are special regulations and instructions
for insta lling a child safety seat on the front
passenger's seat. Always heed the informa­
tion rega rd ing child safety provided in
~ page 130, Child Safety.
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and
all other passengers can result in serious
personal in jury.
- Always keep your feet on the floor when
the vehicle is in motion -never p ut your
feet on top of the instrument panel, out
of the w indow or on top of the seat cush­
ion! This applies espec ially to the passen­
gers .
If your seating position is incorrect
yo u increase the r isk of injury in the case
of sudden braking or an acc ident.
If the
airbag infla tes and the seating position
is incorrect this could result in personal
injury or even death.
- It is import ant for bo th the driver and
front passenger to keep a distance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) between them­
selves and the steering wheel and/or in­
strument panel. If you're s itting any
closer than th is, the a irbag system can­
not protect you properly . In addition to
this, the front seats and head restra ints
must be adjusted to your body height so
that they can give you max imum protec­
tion.
- Always try to keep as much distance as
possible between yourself and the s teer­
ing wheel or instrument pane l.
- Do not adjust the driver's o r fron t pa s­
senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
Your seat may move unexpected ly, caus ­
ing sudden loss of vehicle contro l and
personal injury . If you ad just yo ur seat
while the veh icle is moving, you are out
of posit ion.
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving.
We recommend that you adjust the driver's
seat in the fo llowing manner:
.,. Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so
t ha t you can easily p ush the peda ls to the
floor wh ile keeping your knee slightly bent

.,. Adjust the seatback so that when you sit
w ith your back against the seatback, you can
still grasp the top of the steering wheel.
.,. Posit ion the head restraint accord ing to the
occupant 's height~

erably higher and idea lly level with the top
of the head

A WARNING "--
Never place any objects in the dr iver's foot-
well. An object could get into the pedal
area and interfere with pedal function. In
case of sudden braking or an acc ident, you
would not be able to brake or accelerate!

Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the rearmost position .
To avoid contact with the airbag while it is de­
ploying, do not sit any closer to the instru­
ment panel than necessary and always wear
the three-point safety belt provided adjusted
correctly . We recommend that you adjust the
passenger's seat in the following manner:
.. Bring the backrest up to an (almost) upright
pos it ion .
Do not ride with the seat reclined .
.. The idea l posit ion for the head restraint is
with the upper edge of the restraint level
with the top of your head

A WARNING

sengers must never ride in a moving ve­ hicle with the seatback recl ined. Safety
belts and the airbag system offer maxi­
mum p rotection only when the seatback
is upright and the safety be lts a re prop­
erly posit ioned on the body. The more
the seatback is recl ined, the greate r the
risk of personal injury from an inco rrec t
seating position and improperly posi­
t ioned safety be lts!
- Always make sure the front seatbac ks are
in the upright position and securely
locked in place when driving.

The head restraints must be adjusted proper­
ly to provide protection.

The head restraints on the front seats can be

neck at the optimum height . When optimally
adjusted , the top of the rest raint should be
level with the top of the head

- The backrest must always be securely
latched so that the safety belt can work
properly to help protect the occupant.
- The backrest must be securely latched in
position so that no items contained in
the luggage compartment can slide for­
ward upon sudden braking .
- Never allow safety belts to become dam­
aged by being caught in door or seat
hardware.
- T orn or frayed safety belts can tear and
damaged belt hardware can break in a
crash. Inspect the belts periodically.

make sure the safety belt does not get
caught, because it can be damaged. A
damaged belt can fail to provide safe re­
straint .

Stowing luggage.
In a collision, the laws of physics mean that
even smaller items that are loose in the vehi­
cle will turn into heavy missiles that can cause
serious injury. Items in the vehicle pick up ki­
netic energy which va ries with vehicle and the
weight of the item. The vehicle speed is the
most sign ificant factor .
For example, in a frontal collision at a speed
of 30 mph (48 km/h), the forces acting on a 10 lbs (5 kg) object are about
20 times the
normal weight of the item . This means that
the weight of the item would suddenly be

- Make certain that you follow the instruc­
t ions and heed the WARNINGS in this
Manual. It is in your interest and in the
interest of your passengers .

ature in your Audi when you lend or sell

The safety features are part of the occupant
restraint system and work together to help
redu ce the risk of injury in a wide variety of
accident situations.
Your safety and the safety of your passenge rs
should not be left to chance. Advances in
technology have made a varie ty o f fea tures
avai la bl e to he lp re duce the risk of injury in an accident
