headlights still function.

malfunction corrected.

The light/rain sensor is malfunctioning.
The low
beams remain switched on at all times
for safety reasons when the light switch is in the
AUTO position. You can continue to turn the
lights on and off using the light switch. You can
still control all wiper functions that are inde­
pendent of the rain sensor.
Drive to an authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility immediately to have the
malfunction corrected.
; Damper control
App lies to: vehicles with Audi drive select
R Suspension: malfunction! You may continue

There is an adaptive damper malfunction.
Drive to an authorized Audi dealer or authorized

Instruments and indicator lights
¢ Q Turn signals
If the. or B indicator light blinks, a turn sig­
nal is turned on. If both indicator lights are blink­
ing,
the emergency flashers are on.
In
an indicator light blinks twice as fast as usual,
then a turn signal bulb has failed. Replace the
bulb immediately.
CJ! 4f. Rear safety belt
Applies to: vehicles with rear safety belt detection
The respective indicator light will turn on briefly
when a safety belt on the rear seats is fastened
or unfastened.
f!l-If this indicator light turns on briefly, the
safety belt on the rear seat is not fastened.
II-If this indicator light turns on briefly, the
safety belt on the rear seat was fastened.
·-If this indicator light blinks, the safety belt
was unfastened while driving. Above a certain
speed, there will also be a warning tone.

On-Board Diagnostic
system (OBD)
System indicator light (MIL)
The system indicator light (MIL) Ill in the instru­
ment cluster is part of the On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD II).
The
warning/indicator light turns on when the ig­
nition is
switched on and turns off once the en­
gine is started and is running in idle at a stable
speed. This indicates that the MIL is functioning
correctly.
If the light does not turn off after starting the
engine or turns on while driving, this may indi­
cate there is a malfunction in the engine. If the
indicator turns on, the catalytic converter may be
damaged. ..,.

A WARNING
An airbag system that is not functioning prop­
erly cannot p rovide supplemental p rotection
in a frontal crash.

comes when the vehicle is b eing used, have

system inspecte d immediately by your
autho rized Audi d eale r. It is possible t hat
th e air bag will inflate when it is not su p­
posed to, or will not inflate when it should.
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light

The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light is located in
the over head console c::> fig. 158.
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light will come on
and stay on to tell you when th e front Advanced
Airbag on
the passenger side has been turned off
by the electronic control unit. If the bulb fo r t he
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light burns out, t h e
airbag indicator light fB w ill co m e o n to sig nal a
malfunctio n in the Advanced Airb ag System. Al­
though the burned-out bul b will not change the
way
the front passenger's front al air bag works, it
will no l
onger be possible to use the PASSENGER
AIR
BAG OFF light to make su re that the air b ag
on/off status is correct for the occupant on the
front passenger seat. H ave the airbag system in­
spected immediately by you r a uthorized Audi
deale r.
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light will blink
for about
S seconds when:
-the ignition is switched on and

-the capacit ive passenger detection system,
which switches the front seat passenger's fron ­
tal Advanced Airbag on and off, detects a
change in the status of the front passenger
seat.
As soon as the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
stops blinking, always make sure that the airbag
status (on or off} as shown by the PASSENGER
AIR BAG OFF lig ht is proper for the age, size and
electrical capacitance of the person occupying
t h e
front passenger seat. Always make sure t hat
th e safety belt fo r the front passenger seat is
properly fasten ed .
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light will show
the status
of the front seat passenger's frontal
Advanced Airbag a
few seconds after the igni­
tion is switched on and the airbag indicator
light goes off. The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light:
- will stay on if the front passenger s eat is not
occ up ied;
- will
stay on if the electrica l capaci tance meas­
ured b y the capaci tive passenger detection sys­
t
em for t he fron t passenger seat equals t he
c
ombined capa citanc e of an infant up to abo ut
one year of age and one of the rearwa rd -f acing
or forward -fac ing chil d restraints listed in Fed­
eral Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 with
which
the Advanced Airbag System in your vehi ­
cle was
certified; For a listing of the child re­
strai nts that were used to certify your vehicle 's
complia nce w ith the U .S . Safety Standard
c::>poge 214.
- w ill go out if the front passe nge r seat is occu ­
pied by an adu lt
as register ed by the cap ac it ive
passenger d etectio n system.
- T he PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light must com e
on and
stay on if the igni tion is on and ...
- a car bed
has been installed on the front pas­
senger seat, or
- a rea rward-facing child restraint has been in­
stalled on the front passenger seat, o r
- a forward-fac ing chil d
restraint has been instal­
led on
the front passenger seat,
-and if the electrical capacitance registered on
the front passenger seat is equal to or less than ..,.

re ach of childre n.
A WARNING
Whenever working on the ba ttery or on the
electrical system, there is the risk of injury,
accident and even fire. Read and heed the fol­
lowing
WARNINGS:
- Always wear eye protection. Do not let bat­
tery acid or any lead particles get on your
skin or clothing . Shield your eyes. Explosive
gases can cause blindness or other injury.
-
Battery acid contains sul furic acid. Sulfuric
acid
can cause blindness and severe burns.
- Always
wear gloves and eye protection. Do
not tilt the battery because acid could leak
out of the ventilation openi ngs.
- If you
get battery acid in your eyes or on
your skin, immediately rinse with cold wa­
ter for several minutes and get medical at­
tention.
-
If you should ingest any battery acid, seek
medical attention immediately.
-
Do not expose the battery to an open flame,
electric sparks or an open light.
-
Do not smoke.
-Do not interchange the positive and nega-
tive
cables.
-When working on the battery, be sure not to
short-circuit the terminals with tools or oth­
er metal objects. This would cause the bat­
tery to heat up very quickly, which could
lead to damage or explosion and personal
injury.
-
When a battery is charged, it produces hy­
drogen gas which is explosive and could
cause personal injury .
- Always keep
the battery well out of the
reach of children.
- Before work is
done on the electrical sys­
tem, disconnect the negative ground cable.
- Before
performing any work on the electri­
cal
system, switch off the engi ne and igni­
t i
on as well as any electrical equipment. The

negative cabl e on the battery m ust be dis­
connected. If you are just going to replace a
light bulb,
then it is enough to switch off
the lights.
- Before di
sconnecting the battery, switch off
the anti-theft alarm system! Otherwise you
w ill
set off the alarm.
-
When disconnecting the battery, first dis­
connect the negative cabl e and then the
positive cable.
- Before
reconnecting the battery, make sure
all electrical consumers are switched off.
Reconnect
the positive cable first and then
the negative cable. Never interchange the
cables -this could start a fire!
- Never
charge a frozen or a thawed-out bat­
tery. It cou ld explode! If a battery has fro ­
zen,
then i t must be replaced. A discharged
b attery can freeze ove r at 32 °F (O °C).
-Make sure the vent hose is always attached
to the opening on the side of the battery .
- Never
use batteries which are damaged.
There is th e danger of an exp losion! Always
replace a da maged battery .

-Do not disconnect the vehicle battery when
the ignition is on or when the engine is run­

otherwise, you will damage electronic
components in the e lectrical system.
-If your veh icle is going to stand for a long
period of time without being driven, protect
the battery from "freezing" , otherwise it
will be damaged and will then have to be re­
placed .

A fuse
that has blown will have metal strips that
have burned through.

The individual circuits are protected by safety
fuses. The fuses are located in the interior and in
the engine compartment.

• Remove the cover Q fig. 209.
• Remove the plastic clip from the fuse panel
cover in the engine compartment Q fig. 210.
• Remove the fuse using the clamp.
• Replace the blown fuse only with an identical
new one.
•Install the cover.
