Introduction
The Driver information display inside the in­
strument cluster provides you, the driver,
with important information .

With the ignition on, the display in the Driver
I nformation System shows the fol lowing in­
formation:
- CD* inserted or Radio* station set
- Outside temperature*: At temperatures be-
low 41 °F
(+5 °(), a snowflake symbol ap­
pears in front of the temperature display

-Warning: front lid, door or engine compart­
ment lid open: The display appears if the
door, the engine compartment lid or front
lid is not closed.

Auto Check Control
Some fun ction s and vehicle components are
scanned for their operating status when you
switch the ig nition on and while you are driv­
ing . Malfunctions or required service proce­
dures are signa led audibly and indicated by
red and yellow illuminated symbols and re­
minders in the display

- Never rely exclusively on the outside
temperature display to determine if a road surface is icy or not. Keep in mind
that road surfaces, especially bridges
and overpasses, could be ice covered and
slippery even at an outside temperature
above 41 °F

-Always remember, even if the "snow­
flake" symbol (ice warning) does not ap­
pear in the display, black ice could be on
the road .
- Always reduce your speed and drive with
special care in cold weather conditions
when the chance of encountering icy
road surfaces increases.
@ Tips
- If the vehicle is stationary, or if you are
driving at a very low speed, the tempera­
ture shown in the display might be
slightly higher than the actual outside
temperature. This is caused by the heat
being radiated from the engine.
- On vehicles with Audi Nav igation sys­
tem*, the displays may differ from their
normal appearance during navigation.

A WARNING -
Always take the key with you when you
leave the ve hicle. The key can disarm the

- The vehicle ca nnot be s tarted if an unau­
thoriz ed key is used . The ve hicle may not
star t if another radio device such as a key
fo r anot her vehicle o r a transpo nder is
l oc ated on the key ring.

Power locking system
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors simultaneously.
The power locking system i n your ve hicle in­
corporates the fo llow ing functions :
- C entral lo ck ing func tion
- Remote contro l feature ~
page 35.
- Ant i-Theft Alarm System ¢ page 42.
All the doors and the rear lid are locked by the
centra l locking system when you lock the vehi­
cle .
The unlocking and lock ing mode * can be
changed in the driver i nformation system
¢page 21.
Unlocking the vehicle
You can un lock the vehicle from outsi de either
by using the remote control
or by inserting
and turning the key in the driver's door lock.
When you
unlock your ve hicle:

briefly.
- The vehi cle i nterior ligh ts illum inate for ap­
proximately 3 0 seconds.
- All turn s ignal lights w ill fla sh twice when
the ca r is u nlocked .
- Aft er u nlocking the vehicle, you have 30 sec­
onds to open a door or the rear lid . After 3 0
seconds, the vehicle a utomat ica lly locks and
the anti-theft a la rm system activates aga in .

U nlocking the vehicle with the remote cont ro l

Locking the vehicle
You can lock the veh icle from outs ide either by
u sing the remote control
or by inse rting and
turning the key in the drive rs's door lock.
When you
lock the veh icle:
- All doors an d the rear lid are loc ked .
- All turn s ignal lig hts will flash o nce w hen
t he ca r is lo ck ed .
- The ant i-theft a la rm sys tem is ac tiva ted.

- The vehicle interior lights turn off .
Automatic locking*
The au toma tic lo cking fea ture locks a ll the ve­
hicle doors and the re ar lid w hen you drive
faste r than
9 mph (15 km/ h).
You can unlock t he veh icle from the inside by:
- removing the key from the ignition switc h
(t he vehicle w ill automatically un lock itself)
or
- pressing the unlock part of the power lock
sw itch

pull ing the door handle (to open the door).

The turn signals will flash briefly whenever
you lock or unlock the vehicle. Also, the interi­
or light will come on or go
off whenever you
open or clo se the driver 's door .
The transmitter and battery are located in the head of the remote control. The r eceiver is lo­
cated inside the vehicle. The maximum effec­
tive range depends on several things. Remem­
ber, if the ba ttery is weak, the effec tive range
decreases .
T he remote-control key contains a fold-o ut
key that you can use to manu ally lock or un­
lock the vehicle and to start the engine .
If you need to replace the remote contro l, or if
you need to have it repaired, you must see
your author iz ed Audi dealer. Only then can
you use the key again.

deactivated when the ignition is switch­
ed on .

-The operation of the remote control key
can be temporarily disrupted by interfer­
ence from transmitters in the v icin ity of
the veh icle work ing in the same frequen­
cy range (e.g. a ce ll phone, radio equip­
ment) .
- In order to make sure the locking func­
tion is working, you shou ld always keep
your eye on the vehicle to make sure it is
proper ly locked.
- Do n ot use t he remo te control if you are
i nside the car, otherwise yo u may unin­
tentiona lly lock the ve hicle, and then you
would set
off the anti-theft ala rm when
you try to start the engine or open a
door. In case this happens anyhow, push
the un lock button

- Use the panic funct ion only if you are in
an emergency situation .

Resetting the remote control
T he remote control must be reset if the vehi­
cle does not unlock .
.,. Press the unlock 0 button on the remote
control.
.,. Unlock or lock the ve hicle once at the door
lock using the stem of the remote control
key.
The synchronization process must not take longer than 30 seco nds .
Operating locks with the key
To lock and unlock the vehicle from the ou t­
side, turn the key in the lock of the driver's
door .

Homelink ®
Universal remote
control
General information
The Homelink ® feature can learn up to three
radio frequency codes for most current trans­
mitters used for operating garage doors, es­ tate gates, home or outdoor lighting sys­
tems , and other devices.
You must first program the Homelink ® trans­
mitter before you can use the system
¢ page 95, Programming the HomeLink ®
transmitter.
In order to program the Home Link ® transmit­
ter for devices utilizing rolling code, a second person on a ladder who can safely reach the
garage door opener motor is recommended.
It is also necessary to locate the "learn" but­
ton on your garage door opener motor . Refer
to the operating instructions for the opener,
as the location and color of this button may
vary by manufacturer .
You can still use the original remote control
for the device at any time.
A WARNING -
- Never use the Homelink® transmitter
with any garage door opener that does
have not the safety stop and reverse fea­
ture as requ ired by federal safety stand­
ards. This includes any garage door open­
er mode l manufactured before April 1,
1982.
- A garage door opener which cannot de­
tect an object, signaling the door to stop
and reverse does not meet current feder­
al safety standards. Using a garage door
opener without these features increases
risk of serious injury or death.
- For safety reasons never release the
parking brake or start the engine while
anyone is standing in front of the vehicle .
- A garage door or an estate gate may
sometimes be set in motion when the Homelink
® remote control is being pro­
grammed. If the device is repeatedly ac­
tivated, this can overstrain motor and
damage its electrical components -an
overheated motor is a fire hazard!
- To avoid possible injuries or property
damage, please always make absolutely
certain that no persons or objects are lo­
cated in the range of motion of any
equ ipment being operated.

12. Press and release the learn button on the
garage door opener motor.
• Note: once the button is pressed, there are
30 seconds in which to initiate the next
step.
13 . On the Homel ink ® keypad inside the vehi ­
cle, firmly press and hold the Homelink ®
button previously programmed in phases
1 and 2 for two seconds and release. Re­
peat this sequence
twice .
• Some vehicles may require the press/hold/
release sequence up to t hree times to com­
plete the training process.
• HomeLink ® should now activate your rolling
code equipped device.
If the 5 minute time limit is exceeded, the
emergency flashers will flash one time to in­
d icate that the process has been terminated.
In this case, repeat steps 4 through 9 .
If the emergency flashers do not flas h
three
times (after about 15-60 seconds), program­
ming was not successful. In this case, repeat
steps 4 through 9.
Remote control units for garage door openers
i n Canada are set to stop transmitting radio
frequency signals after two seconds. This time
may not be sufficient for the Homelink ® sys­
tem to learn the radio frequency s ignal. Per­
form all other steps as described above .
Operating the Homelink® transmitter
The HomeLink ® transmitter works in the
same manner as the original handheld re­
mote control that came with the system .

Reprogramming a single button
A HomeLink ® button can be reprogrammed
individually without affecting the other but­
ton allocations.
Programming the overhead keypad
• Press the appropriate Homelink ® button un-
til the indicator light begins flashing slowly.
Programming the bumper mounted trans
mitter
1. Hold the original remote control at a dis ­
tance between
0-5 i n. (0 -13 cm) from the
bumper below the appropriate headlight
for your vehicle (use the shortest distance
possible) .
2. Aim the remote control just below the
driver side headlight .
3 . Press and hold the act ivation button on
the remote control.
4. The emerge ncy flashers will flash
three
times
(after about 15-60 seconds) when
the programming is successful. Now re­
l ease the button on the remote control.

This procedure will cause the existing pro­
gramming on the Homelink ® button to be
erased!
Erasing the programming of the
Homelink ® transmitter
When you erase the programming, the pro­
gramming on all three of the transmitter
channels with be lost!

and special equipment necessary.
- For any work on the airbag system, we
strongly recommend that you see your authorized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop.
- Never modify the front bumper or parts
of the vehicle body .
- Always make sure that the side airbag
can inflate without interference:
- Never install seat covers or replace­
ment upholstery over the front seat­
backs that have not been specifically
approved by Audi.
- Never use additional seat cushions that cover the areas where the side airbags inflate.
- Damage to the original seat covers or
to the seam in the area of the side air­
bag module must always be repaired
immediately by an authorized Audi
dealer.
- The airbag system can be activated only once. After an airbag has inflated, it
must be replaced by an authorized Audi
dealer or qualified technician who has
the technical information, training and special equipment necessary.
- The airbag system can be deployed only
once. After an airbag has been deployed,
it must be replaced with new replace­
ment parts designed and approved espe­
cially for your Audi model version. Re­
placement of complete airbag systems
or airbag components must be per­
formed by qualified workshops only .

is entered in your Audi Warranty
& Main­
tenance booklet under
AIRBAG REPLACE ­
MENT RECORD.
-For safety reasons in severe accidents,
the alternator and starter are separated
from the vehicle battery with a pyrotech­ nic circuit interrupter.

-Work on the pyrotechnic circuit inter­
rupter must only be performed by a
qualified dealer - risk of an accident!
- If the vehicle or the circuit interrupter
is scrapped, all applicable safety pre­
cautions must be followed.
Other things that can affect Advanced
Airbag performance
Changing the vehicle's suspension system can
change the way that the Advanced Airbag Sys­
tem performs in a crash. For example, using
tire-rim combinations not approved by Audi,
lowering the vehicle, changing the stiffness of
the suspension, including the springs, suspen­
sion struts, shock absorbers etc. can change
the forces that are measu red by the airbag
sensors and sent to the electronic control unit. Some suspension changes can, for exam­
ple, increase the force levels measured by the
sensors and make the airbag system deploy in
crashes in which it would not deploy if the
changes had not been made. Other kinds of
changes may reduce the force levels meas­
ured by the sensors and prevent the airbag
from deploying when it should .
The sensors in the safety belt buckle for the
driver and front passenger seat tell the elec­
tronic control module if the safety belt is
latched or not. If the safety belt is being used,
the front airbag will deploy at a slightly high-
er rate of vehicle deceleration than if the safe-
ty belt is not being used . Therefore, in a par ­
ticular collision, it is possible that an airbag
will not deploy at a seating position where the
safety belt is being used but will inflate at the
position where the safety belt is not being
used.
It is important that nothing interfere
with the safety belt buckles so that the sen-
sors can send the correct information about
safety belt use to the electronic control unit. ..,.

Energy management
Starting ability is optimized
Energy management controls the distribution
of electrical energy and thus optimizes the
availability of electrical energy for starting the engine .
If a vehicle with a conventional energy system
is not driven for a long period of time, the bat­
tery is discharged by idling current consumers
(e.g. immobilizer). In ce rtain c ircumstances it
can result in there being insuff icient ene rgy
avai lab le to start the engine .
Intell igent energy management in your vehi­
cle handles the d istribution of electrical ener­
gy. Starting ab il ity is markedly imp roved and
the life of the battery is extended .
Basically, energy management consists of
batt ery diagno sis, idlin g current man ag e­
m ent
and dyn ami c en ergy manag emen t.
Batter y diagnosis
Battery diagnosis continuously determines
the state of the battery . Sensors determ ine
battery vo ltage, battery current and battery
temperature. This determ ines the current
state of charge and the powe r of the battery.
Idling curr ent man agement
Idling current management reduces energy
consumption while the vehicle is stand ing .
W ith the ignition switched off, it cont ro ls the
energy s upply to the various electr ical compo ­
nents . Data from battery diagnosis is consid­
ered.
D epending on the batte ry's state of charge,
i nd ividua l consumers are gradual ly t urned off
to prevent excess ive d ischarge of the battery
and thus maintain starting capability .
Dynam ic en ergy management
While the vehicle is being driven, dynamic en­
e rgy management dist ributes the energy gen­
e rated according to the needs of the individu­
a l components.
It reg ulates cons umption, so
that more electrical energy is not being used

than is being generated and ensures an opti ­
mal state of charge for the battery.

negate the limits of physics . Consider
that the power and life of a battery are
limited .

What you should know
The highest priority is given to maintaining
starting capability.
The battery is severe ly taxed in short -distance
driving, in city traffic and during the cold time
of year. Abundant electrical energy is re­ quired, but only a little is generated .
It is also
critical if the engine is not running and electri­
cal components are turned on . In this in­
stance energy is be ing consumed but none is
being generated.
It is in precisely these situations that you will
notice energy management actively regulat ­
ing the d istribution of energy .
Vehicle stands for an e xtended peri od
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period
of several days or weeks, e lectr ical compo­
nents are gradually cut back or switched off.
This reduces energy consumption and ma in ­
ta ins start ing capability over a longer period .
Take into considerat ion that when you unlock
your vehicle, some convenience functions, such as the remote key or power seat adjust­
ment, may not be available . The conven ience
funct ions w ill be available again when you
tu rn o n the ignition and start the engine .
With the engine turned off
If you listen to the radio, for example, w ith
the engine turned off, the battery is being d is-
charged.

168 Cleaning and protection
Use only special acid -free cleaners form ulated
for a lloy rims. Safe products are available at
your Aud i dealer. Never leave the cleaner on
the r ims longer than spec ified on the label. If
not rinsed
off promp tly, the acid conta ined in
some cleaners can attack the threads on the
wheel bolts .
Never use abras ive or metal polishing clean ­
ing agents. If the protective coating has been
chipped, e .g . by k icked up road dirt, touch it
up as soon as poss ible.

Body cavity sealing

The body cavity sealing does not need to be
checked.
A ll body cavities wh ich could be affected by
corrosion have been give n thorough protec­
tion at the facto ry.
T his sea ling does not require any inspection or
addit io nal treatment. If any wax should seep
out of the cav ity when the ambient tempera­
ture is high, it can be removed w it h a plastic
scrape r and a su itab le so lven t.
A WARNING
So lvents can be dange rous.
- B enzine is flammable and t oxic.
If you
use benzine for removing the wax, keep
spar ks, flame and lighted c igaret tes
away. Never dump benzine on t he
ground, into open streams or down sew­
age drains.
- Be sure to observe all safety and env iron­
menta l regulations . Follow all instruc­
t ions on the container.

Chassis
Have the undercoating checked for damage
from time to time.
The lower body shell of your Aud i is also thor­
oughly protected against cor ros io n.
Any damage to the unde rcoating ca used by
road ha zards should be repaired prompt ly.
A WARNING ....__
Too much undercoating in the wrong p la­
ces can cause a fire.
- Do not app ly additional undercoating or
r u stp roof ing on or near the exhaust
manifold, exhaust pipes, catalytic con­
ver ter or heat shields. While driving, the
substance used fo r undercoating could
overhea t and cause a fire.
- Always read and heed all WAR NINGS and
o ther info rmation

Exhaust tail pipes
Road salt and o ther co rrosive materials w ill
damage the mate ria l in the e xhaus t tail pipes
i f they are not cleaned regular ly . Do not clean
the tail pipes with w hee l cleaner, pa int polish,
c h rome polish or other ab rasive cleane rs .
Clean the tail pipes with car care products
t h at are suitable for sta inless steel.

ing products that have been tested and ap­
proved for your vehicle .

Charging of battery
Starting the engine requires a well charged battery.

It is not necessary to remove the battery from
the luggage compartment, and it is also not
necessa ry to disconnect the cables.
Normally, a battery should be charged at no
more than 10 percent of its rated capacity.
For example, a charging current of 4.5 amps
wou ld be used on a battery rated at 45 Ah.
Rated capacity of the battery in your veh icle is
listed on the battery housing .
The battery caps should
not be opened when
charging a battery.
&,. WARNING

Charging a battery can be dangerous.
- Never charge a frozen battery . It may ex­
plode because of gas trapped in the ice.
Allow a frozen battery to thaw out first.
- Do not reuse batteries which were fro­
zen. The battery housing may have
c racked and weakened whe n the battery
froze.
- Charge the battery in a we ll ventilated
area . Keep away from open f lame o r elec­
t ric al spa rk . Do not smoke. Hydrogen gas
gene rate d by the b attery is exp losive. -
To reduce the danger of explosion, never
connect or d isconnect charger cab les
while the charger is operating .
- Fast charging a battery is dangerous and
should only be attempted by a compe­
tent tech nician with the proper equip­
ment .
- Battery acid that may spill during charg­
ing should be washed off with a solution
of wa rm water and bak ing soda to neu­
tralize th e ac id .
(D Note
Never use a fast charger as a booster to
start the eng ine . Th is w ill seriously dam­
age sensit ive electronic components, such
as cont ro l units, re lays, radio, etc., as well
as the battery charger.

-Never mount used tires on yo ur vehicle if
you are not sure of their "previous histo­
ry." Old used tires may have been dam­
aged even though the damage cannot be
seen that can lead to sudden tire failure
and loss of vehicle control.
Glossary of tire and loading terminology
Accessory weight
means the comb ined weight (in excess of
those standard items wh ich may be rep laced)
of automa tic tra nsmission, power steering,
power br akes, power w indows, power sea ts,
radio, and heater, to the ex tent that these
items are avai lab le as factory -installed eq uip ­
ment (whether installed or not).
Aspect ratio
means the rat io of the height to the w idt h of
the tire in percent . Numbers of 55 o r lower in ­
d icate a low sidewall fo r improve d steer ing re ­
sponse and better overall handling on dry
pavement.
Bead
means the pa rt of the t ire t hat is made o f
s teel wires, wrapped o r reinforce d by ply cor ds
and that is shaped to fit the r im.
Bead separation
means a b reakdown of the bond between
com ponents in the bead .
Cord
means the strands forming the plies in the
tire .
Cold tire infl ation pres sure
means the tire pressure recommended by the
vehicle manufacturer for a t ire of a designated
size that has not been dr iven for more than a
couple of miles (kilometers) at low speeds in
the three hour period before the tire pressure
i s measu red or adjusted.

-If you notice un usua l vibration or if the
veh icle pulls to one side when driv ing, a l­
ways stop as soon as it is safe to do so and check the wheels and tires for dam­
age.
Curb weight
mea ns the we ight of a motor ve hicle w it h
standard equipment in cl ud ing t he maximum
