- If the rear lid is ope n or not properly
locked when the ignition is turned on,
the door and rear lid warning appears in
the instrument cluster disp lay.
- If the rear lid on a locked vehicle is un
l ocked with the middle button

remote key, the rear lid is automatically
l ocked again immediately after clos ing.
This is indicated by the turn signals
blinking .
Rear Lid Emergency Release
If the rear lid cannot be opened , an emergen
cy release is provided .

A WARNING

Anti-theft alarm
system
The anti-the~ alarm triggers an alarm if any
one attempts to break into the vehicle.

The anti-theft alarm system triggers an audi
ble a larm and turns on the emergency flasher
if an unauthorized interference with the vehi
cle is sensed by the system .
How is the anti-theft alarm system
switched on?
The anti-theft alarm system is switched on
when you lock the driver's door manually us
ing the fold-out key, or when you use the re
mote control. The system is activated approx i
mately 30 seconds after the vehicle is locked.
T he ind icator light
r::;, fig. 34 starts flashing
rapidly for 30 seconds and then blinks slowly.
How is the anti-theft alarm system
switched off?
The anti-theft alarm system is switched off
o nl y when you use the remote control to un
lock your vehicle . If you do not open a door
within 30 seconds after you have unlocked
with the remote control, the vehicle wi ll lock
itself aga in automatically .
If you lock just the driver's door using your
key, the front passenger's door and the rear
lid remain locked. ..,.

When will the anti theft ala rm system be
triggered?
When the vehicle is locked , the alarm system
monitors and protects the following parts of
the vehicle:
- engine compartment
- luggage compartment
- doo rs
- ignition
When the system is activated, the alarm will
be triggered if one of the doors, the engine
hood or the rear lid are opened, or if the ign i
tion is turned on.
The anti-theft alarm system will also go off
when the battery is disconnected.
You can a lso trigger the alarm by pressing the
PANIC button on your remote-control key.
This will alert other people in case of emer
gency. Press the
PANIC button again to turn
off the alarm .
How is the anti-theft alarm switched off
when triggered?
The alarm system is switched off when you
unlock the vehicle using the remote-control key or when the ignition is sw itched on . The
a larm will also switch itse lf off when it comes
to the end of its cycle.
Emergency flasher
The emergency flasher will blink briefly when
the doors, engine hood and rear lid are prop
erly closed.
If the emergency flashers do not blink, check
the doors, engine hood and rear lid to make
sure they are properly closed. If you close a
door, the hood or the rear lid with the ant i
theft alarm switched on, the emergency flash
ers will blink only after you have closed the
door or lid.

For the anti-theft alarm system to func
tion properly, make sure all vehicle doors
and windows are closed before leaving the
vehicle.

The driver can operate all windows .

- Do not leave children unattended in the
vehicle, especially with access to vehicle
keys . Unsupervised use of the keys can

-Remember -you can still open or close
the power windows for about ten mi
nutes after the ignition is switched off.
Only when either of the front doors are
opened are the power windows sw itched
off.
- Be careful when closing the windows.
Check to see that no one is in the way, or
serious injury could result!
- Always remove the ignition key whenever
you leave your vehicle .
- If you lock your vehicle from the outside,
no one, especially children, should re
ma in in the vehicle.
- Do not stick anything on the w indows or
the windsh ield that may interfere with
the driver's field of vision.
(D Tips
-When the doors are opened, the w in
dows are automat ically lowered 10 mm .
- The windows can still be opened and
closed for about ten m inutes after the
ignition has been turned off. The power
windows are not shut off until one of the
fron t doors is opened.
Convenience close/open feature
You can close or open the windows from out
side when you lock or unlock your car with the
key.

Closing the windows
• Insert the key into the lock of the driver's
door.

Reactivating the system after battery
disconnection
Reactivating the convenience close/open fea
ture
If the vehicle battery is disconnected and then
reconnected, the automatic closing and open
ing function will not work until it is reactivat
ed. To react ivate this feature, perform the fol
lowing steps:
Reactivating close/open feature
• Pull and hold the power window switch until
the window is completely closed.
• Release the sw itch.
• Pull the sw itch again for one second . The au
tomatic clos ing/opening is now reactivated .

the vehicle.

The indicator light for the convertible top goes out as soon as it is correctly latched .

The convertible top is completely open or
closed when the indicator light in the in-
strument cluster goes out . The door windows
are automatically lowered about 20 mm wh ile
the top is opening .

Never drive the vehicle with the top not
properly latched! Otherwise there is a risk

that the top will be opened by the wind.
This can result in in juries and damage to
the vehicle.
(D Tips
- Opening and closing the automatic con
vertible top is possible below posted speed lim its in city driv ing. At speeds
above 4 mph (6 km/h), you can use the
"convenience opening" funct ion. The
convertible top is completely opened by
br iefly pulling on the switch .
- The indicator light for the co nvertible
top goes o ut as soon as it is correctly
latched.
- In order not to discharge the battery un
necessar ily, the top should not be low
ered or raised several times in succession
w ith the engine not running.
- If the ind icator light for the convertible
t op flashes when the switch is actuated,
there is a malf unct ion.
Convenience opening and closing of
power top
Applies to vehicles: with power co nvertible top
The power top can alternatively be opened
and closed by turning the key in the driver's
door lock.

Wind Deflector
The wind deflector reduces turbulence in the
passenger compartment and makes driving
more comfortable.

th e windows are raised.
Convertible top
emergency operation
General information
Applies to vehicles: with power convertible top
-
The convertible top con be closed manually if
it malfunctions.
.,. Set the park ing brake.
.,. Open the w indows.
.,. Remove the key from the ignition .
Close the convertible top manually only in an
emergency situation. The best way course of
action is to contact your dealership to have
the cause of the malfunct ion corrected.
The convert ible top's emergency operation ba
s ically consists of the following steps:
- Oepressurize the hydraulic system for op
erating the convertible top :
The hydraulic
system pump must be depressurized.
- Unlock the covers: The covers must be man
ually unlocked and positioned .
-Raise the convertible top: The convertible
top must be manually lifted out of its well
and ra ised. ..,.

Switching off the lights

The head lights only work when the ignition is
switched on. While start ing the engine or
when switching off the ignition, the head- lights
will go off and only the side ma rker
lights will be on.
Daytime running lights (DRL) (USA
models)
T he daytime running lights can be turned on
or off using this function. If the function is ac
tive, the daytime running lights are turned on
automatically when the ignit ion is switched
on.
The daytime running lights are activated
only
when the light switch is at the AUTO* or DRL *
position.
Daytime running lights (Canada models
only)
The daytime running lights are activated only
when the light switch ¢ fig. 52 is either at the
0 or the :;oo: position.
T he daytime r unning lights funct ion cannot be
turned off.
Automatic headlight control*
In the switch position AUTO the automatic
headlight control
is turned on. The low
beams are turned on automatically through a
light sensor as soon as ambient brightness
(e .g. when driving into a tunnel) falls below a
value preset at the factory. When ambient
brightness increases aga in, the low beams are
turned off again automatically ¢.&. .
In the
AUTO position the low beams are
switched off automatically when the ignition
is turned off .
Light Sensor Malfunction*
In the event of a light sensor malfunction, the
driver is notified in the instrument cluster dis
play:
tal Automatic headlights/automatic wipers
defective
For safety reasons the low beams are turned
on permanently with the switch in
AUTO* .
However, you can continue to turn the lights
on and off using the light switch . Have the

Turn signals and high beam lever
The lever on the left side of the steering col
umn is used to operate the turn signals and
the high beam as well as the headlight flash
er .

The turn signal and high beam lever has the

Emergency flasher
The emergency flasher makes other motorists
a w are that you or your vehicle are in an emer
gency situation.

When the emerge ncy flashe r is on, al l four
turn signals blink at the same time. The t urn

emergency flashers a lso work when the igni
tion is turned off.
The emergency flasher will automatica lly
switch on if you are in an acc ident where the
airbag has deployed.
@ Tips
You should switch on the emergency flash
er when:
- you are the last vehicle sta nding in a traf
fic jam so that any other vehicles coming can see you, or when
- your vehicle has broken down or yo u are
i n an emergency situation, or when
-you r vehicle is being towed by a tow
truck or if you are towing a nothe r vehicle

Interior lights
The interior lights include the reading lights
for the driver and the front passenger .

Front read ing lights ~
.. Press one of the switches ® to turn the
r ight or left reading light on or off.
With the door contact ci rcuit, the inter ior
lights turn on as soon as you unlock the vehi
cle or open the doors. The interior lights are
also turned on when the ignition key is re
moved. The lights turn off about 30 seconds
after the doors are closed . When the veh icle is
locked or when the ignition is turned on, the
in terior lig hts are tu rned off.
When a door is open, the inte rior lights are
tu rned off after about 10 minutes to preve nt
batte ry dra in ing.
The brightness of the lights is controlled au
tomat ica lly by a d immer when they are
switched on and off .

The illumination of the instruments, displays
and the center console can be adjusted. You
regulate the brightness of the instruments
with the left thumbwheel

Ignition ON, light switch at @ .
With the ignition switched ON, the glow of in
strument needles can be adjusted to appear
brighter or dimmer.
Ignition ON , light switch at ;oo~ or io .
With the l ights sw itched on, the brightness of
instrument cluster (i.e. needles, gauges and
displays) and center console illumination can
be adjusted.
@ Note
The instrument cl uster and cente r console
illumination (gauges and needles) comes
on when you switch on the ignition and the
vehicle headligh ts ar e off . Be aware of the
following difference between mode ls built
to US or Canadian specifications:
- USA mode ls: illumination of the instru
ment cluster (gauges and needles), dash
and center consol e around the se lector
l ever is controlled by a light senso r locat
ed in the instrument panel. The instru
ment pane l illumination will a utomat i
cally become dimmer as the daylight
fades away and eventually will go out
complete ly when outside light is very
l ow . Th is is to rem ind you, the driver, to
switch on the headlights before it gets
too dark . -
Canada models: instrument panel illumi
nation will stay bright regardless of the
intensity of ambient light . Always be
aware of changes in outside light condi
tions while you are driving. Respond in
time to fading daylight by tur ning the
light switch to position fD (o r "AUTO" if
your car is equipped with this feature) to
t ur n on you r headlights.
Luggage compartment light
The light is located on the right side of the
lu ggage compartme nt. These lights come on
automat ica lly when the rear lid is opened . The
lights turn off automatica lly if the lid is left
open for more then 10 minutes.

Turn the knob to the desired posit ion:

driver's and front passenger's exte rior m irrors
by turning the knob in the desired d irection.

You are we ll-advised to fold the exterior mir
rors in when maneuvering in tight spaces or
when leaving the car parked close to other
vehicles. ..,,.

-Switching off the dimming function of
the inside rear view mirror also deact i
vates the automatic dimming f unction of
the exterior m irrors.
- The automatic dimming mirrors do not
dim when the interior lighting is turned
on or the reverse gear is selected .
-Automat ic dimming for the m irror only
operates properly if the light striking the inside mirror is not hindered in any way.
Sun visors
Using the sun visors makes driving safer.

The vanity mirrors in the sun v isors are equip
ped with lids. Push lid in direction of arrow to
open.
Wiper and washer system
Windshield wiper
The windshield wiper lever controls both the
windshield wipers and the washer system .

T he windshield wiper lever i=:> fig. 62 has the

Low wiper speed

High wiper speed

One-touch wiping
.. Move the lever to position @, when you
want to wipe the windshield

Automatic wiper/washer
.. Pull the lever to position ® (to ward the
steering whee l) and hold .
.. Release the lever . The washer stops and the
w ipers keep going for about four seconds.
Turning off the wipers
.. Move the lever back to position @ .
The windshield w ipers and washer only work
when the ignition is turned on. If you switch
off the igni tion with the windshie ld wipe r lev
er still in the interval wipe position and then
come back a while later and drive off, the ra in
sensor will reactivate itself after the vehicle
speed has exceeded 4 mph (6 km/h).
Th e rai n sensor* is only activated with the
wiper lever set to position
(D. When it starts
to rain, the rain senso r will a utomat ically acti
vate the intermittent wiping mode .
To reduce the sensitivity of the sensor, move
swi tch @ down. To increase the sensitivity,
move the switc h up. The higher you adjust the
sensitivity, the faster the sensor will react
when it senses moisture on the windshield.
The pauses between wiper turns depend not
only on the sensitivity setting, but on the ve-
hicle speed as well. ..,.
