You can control the functions through the dial,
buttons in the dial and the buttons. Press the
buttons to turn the functions on or off . The LED
in a button w ill light up when the funct ion is
switched on .
We recommend pressing the
IAUTOI button and
setting the temperature to 72 °F (22 °C). The au­
tomatic climate control system automatically
maintains a temperature once it has been set .
The air tempe rature coming from the vents, the
b lower speed, and the air distribution are also
automatically adjusted. In all heating mode f unc­
tions except
defrost, the b lower only switches to
a higher speed once the engine coolant has
reached a certain temperature.
~ Adjusting the blow er
The blower speed can be adjusted in small inc re­
ments using the dia l
(D. The blower should a l­
ways run at a low setting to prevent the windows
from fogging and to ensure a continuous ex­
change of air inside the vehicle. You can adjust
the volume of air generated by the blower to your
preference. To have the blower regulated auto­
mat ically, press the
IAU TOI button .
IA/Cj Switching cooling mode on and off
The cooling system is tur ned on and off w ith the
IA/C l button. The air is not cooled and humidity is
not removed when coo ling mode is sw itched off.
Warm and cold
This can cause fog on the windows. Cooling mode
switches off automatically when the outside tem­
perature is be low zero .
The temperature can be adjusted with the con­
trol @.
I• I • I Adjusting the temperature
T he tempe rature can be adjusted in small i ncre­
ments using the dial@.
IAUTO I Switching automatic mode on and off
The automatic mode is turned on using the
IAUTOI button. AUTO mode switches off once a
button in the climate con trol system is pressed.
Automat ic mode maintains a cons tant tempera­
tu re inside the vehicle . Air temperature, airf low
and air distribution are controlled automatically .
Adjusting the air distribution
The air distrib ution can be adjusted w ith the con­
t rol @ . To have the air d istr ibution regulated au ­
tomat ica lly, press the
IAUTOI butto n.

Driving
General information
Breaking in
A new vehicle must be broken in, and the break­
in distance should be 1,000 mi les ( 1,500 km). Do
not drive at speeds that w ill exceed
2/3 of the
maximum permitted engine speed
(RPM) for the
first 600 miles (1,000 km) , and avoid full accel­
eration during this period . You may gradually
start increasing the
RPM and the speed between
600 miles (1,000 km) and 1,000 miles (1,500
km).
During the first hours of use, the engine has a
higher internal friction than later on when all
moving parts have settled into place with each
other.
How the vehicle is driven during the first 1,000
miles (1,500 km) also affects the engine quality.
Drive at moderate engine speeds after the initial
break-in per iod, part icularly when running a cold
engine . This will reduce engine wear and improve
the mileage .
Do not drive at too low of an engine speed (rpm).
Shift down if the engine stops running "smooth­
ly" . Extremely high eng ine speeds are automati ­
cally reduced .
Avoid damaging the vehicle
When you are driving on poor roads, or over
curbs, steep ramps, etc., make certain that low­
lying parts such as spoilers and exhaust system
parts do not bottom out and get damaged.
This is especially true for vehicles with low-slung
chassis (sports chassis)* and fully loaded
vehicles.
Driving through water on roads
Note the following to reduce the risk of vehicle
damage when driving through water, for examp le
on flooded roads :
- The wate r must not be any higher than the bot­
tom of the vehicle body .
Driving
- Do not drive faster than walking speed.
A WARNING
After driv ing through water or mud, the effec­
tiveness of the brakes may be reduced due to moisture on the brake rotors and brake pads.
A few careful brake applications should dry
off the brakes .
(D Note
Vehicle components such as the engine,
transmission, suspension or electrical system
can be severely damaged by driving through
water.
(D Tips
- Determine the depth before driving through
water.
- Do not stop the vehicle, drive in reverse or
switch the engine off when driving through
water.
- Keep in mind that oncoming vehicles may create waves that raise the water level and
make it too deep for your vehicle to drive
through safely.
- Avoid dr iving through salt water, because
this can cause corrosion.
Economical and environmentally-friendly
driving
T he amount of fuel consumpt ion, the environ­
menta l impact and the wear to the engine,
brakes and tires depends mostly on your driving
style. With an anticipatory and economic driving
style, fuel consumption can be reduced by ap­
proximately 10-15%. The following tips will help
you conserve the environment and your money at
the same time .
Anticipatory driving
A vehicle uses the most fuel when accelerating.
When you drive with anticipation, you do not
need to brake as often and so you accelerate less.
When possible, let your vehicle coast with a
gear
engaged -
for example, when you notice that the
next traff ic light is red . .,,.

Avoid full acc ele ra tion
You sho uld rare ly travel at the maximum vehicle
speed . High speeds cause a disp roportionately
high increase in fuel consumption, emissions and
traffic noise . Slower driving saves fuel.
Reduce idling time
It pays off to stop the engi ne, for examp le when
at rai lro ad crossings or tr affic lights with longer
red lights . Stopping the engine for 30 -40 sec ­
onds already saves more fuel than the amount of
extra fuel needed to resta rt the engine.
It t akes a very long time in idle to wa rm the en­
g ine up to operating tempe ra ture . Wear and
emissions are especially high in the warm-up
p hase . Therefore, yo u should begin driving im ­
mediately after starting the engine. Avoid high
RPMs while do ing th is.
Have ma intenanc e performed r egularly
By having maintenance performed regular ly on
your vehicle, yo u can help to reduce f uel con­
sumpt ion before you even start to dr ive. The
maintenance condition of your vehicle not only
affects traffic safety and long-term value but a l­
so impacts
fuel consumpt ion .
A poorly maintained engine can lead to fuel con­
sumpt ion that is 10% higher than normal.
A lso check the
oil le vel when refueling . The o il
consumption
depends large ly on the engine load
and speed. It is normal for the oil consumpt ion
of a new eng ine to reach its lowest point only af­
ter a certain amount of use. Therefore, the oil
consumption can o nly be properly judged after
approx imately 3,000 m i (S,000 km) have been
d riven.
Avoid short trips
The engine and exhaust cleaning system must
reach the ir opt imal
operating temperature to ef­
fectively red uce consumption and em iss ions.
A co ld engine uses a disproportionately h igh
amount of fuel. The engine reaches operating
temperature and consumpt io n normalizes only
afte r approximately
four kilometers.

Do not leave engine idling unattended after
starting. If warning lights sho uld come on to
i ndicate imprope r operation, they would go
unheeded. Extended idling also produces
h eat, which could result in overheating or
other damage to the vehicle o r other proper­
ty.

vehicle's Emission Contro l System and other
important veh icle components.

The cons umption estimates as publishe d by
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
(EPA) and Transport Canada may not corre­
spond to your actual consumption on the r oad, which wi ll vary depending upon vehicle
l oad and speed, road a nd wea ther conditions,
tr ip length, etc.

Driving
-Never turn off the engine before the vehicle
has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and power steering only
work when the engine is running. If the en­
gine is
off, you have to use more force when
steering or braking. Because you cannot
steer and brake as you usually would, this
could lead to accidents and serious injuries.
(D Note
Avoid high engine speed, full throttle, and
heavy engine load if the engine has not
reached operating temperature yet. You could
damage the engine.
@ For the sake of the environment
Do not let the engine run while parked to
warm up. Begin driving immediately . This re­
duces unnecessary emissions.
{D) Tips
-Some noise after starting the engine is nor­
mal and is no cause for concern.
- If you leave the vehicle with the ignition
switched on, the ignition will switch
off af­
ter a certain amount of time . Make sure that
electrical equipment such as the exterior
lights are switched
off.

Emergency off function*
If it is absolutely necessary, the engine can also
be turned
off while driving at speeds starting at
4 mph (7 km/h). To switch the engine
off, press
the
! START ENGINE STOPI button twice in a row
briefly or press and hold for longer than two sec­
onds.
_&. WARNING
- Never turn off the engine before the vehicle
has come to a complete stop.

- Please note that the brake booster and pow­

cause the usual steering and braking capa­
bility is not available, the risk of accidents or

- For safety reasons, always park the vehicle
with the selector lever in the P position.
Otherwise, there is the risk that the vehicle
could roll.
- After the engine has been switched off, the
radiator fan can continue to run for up to 10
minutes -even with the ignition switched
off. It can also switch on again after some
time if the coolant temperature rises as the
result of heat buildup or if the engine is al­
ready warm and the engine compartment is
also heated by the sun's rays.
(D Note
If the engine has been under heavy load for
an extended period of time, heat builds up in
the engine compartment after th@ engine is
switched
off and there is a risk of damaging
the engine . For this reason, let the engine run
at idle for approximately two minutes before
shutting it
off.
Messages
Turn off ignition before leaving vehicle. Battery
is discharging
This message appears and a warning tone sounds
if you open the driver's door when the ignition is
switched on. Switch the ignition
off so that the
battery will not discharge.
Pressing start/stop button again will switch off
engine.
This message appears when you press the
I START ENGIN E STOP ! button while driving.
Engine start system: malfunction! Please con­
tact Service
The engine automatic start system has a mal­
function. Drive to an authorized Audi dealer or
autho rized Audi Service Facility immediately to

Starting the engine when there is a
malfunction
It may not be possible to start the engine under
certain circumstances, for example if th e battery
in the vehicle key is drained, if interference is af­
fected the key or if there is a system malfunc­
tion.

During emergency brak ing, your vehicle will
brake s imilar to heavy braking. ESC and the
associated components (ABS, ASR, EDL)
cannot ove rcome the laws of physics. In co r­
ners and when road or weather conditions
are bad, a fu ll brake application can cause
the vehicle to s kid or the rea r end to swe rve,
whi ch in crease s the risk of an ac cident.
- I f the power supply fails, you cannot set the
pa rking bra ke if it is released. In this ca se,
p ar k the vehicle on leve l grou nd and secure
it by plac ing the sele ctor lever in the P pos i­
tion. See an authorized A udi dealer or au -
thorized A udi Service Facil ity for assistance.

Driving

interruption in traction.
The transm ission upshifts o r downshifts auto­
mat ica lly . T he driving sty le con tinuo usly influen­
ces the selection of the driving program.
W hen a
moderate driving style is used , the
t ra nsmission se lects the most e conomical d riving
mode. The t ransm iss io n upshifts a t a lower RPM
and downshifts at a higher RPM to improve fuel
efficiency.
The transm ission switches to a spo rty mode after
a ki ck-down or when the drive r uses a
sp o rty
dri ving sty le
character ized by quick accelerator
pedal movements, heavy acce leration, frequent
changes in speed and traveling at the ma ximum
speed.
I f desired, the driver can a lso select the gears
manually ( tiptronic mode ).

Only s hift into reverse gear w hen the ve hicle is
stationary and the engine is runn ing at idle

The back -up lights switch on in the R pos ition if
the ignit ion is switched on.
N -Neutral
The tra nsmission is in idle in th is position.
D IS -Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S se lector lever position, the transmis­
s ion can be operated either in the normal D mode
or in the S sport mode. To select the S sport
mode, pull the selector lever bac k br iefly . Pu lling
the leve r bac k aga in will select the normal D
mode. The selec ted drivi ng mode is show n in t he
Infotai nment display.
In the
normal mode D , the transmission auto­
matically sele cts the s uitable gear ratio.
It de­
pends on engine load , vehi cle speed a nd driving
style.
Se lect the
sport mode S fo r spo rty d riving . The
vehicle makes f ull use of the engine's power.
Sh ift ing may become no ticeable whe n acceler at­
i ng.
To move from selector leve r pos it ion N to D, you
mus t press the brake pedal and the veh icle m ust
be traveling less th an 1 mph (2 km/h) o r be sta­
tiona ry ¢ ,&. .

Read and fo llow all WARNINGS .
- The vehi cle can roll even if the ig nitio n is
sw itched off .
- Never se lec t R or P whi le dr iving, because
this increases the risk of an ac cident .
- P owe r is still transmi tted to the wheels
w hen t he engine is runn ing at idle . To pre ­
vent the vehicle from "creeping", yo u m ust
keep your foot on the brake in a ll selector
lever positions (except P) when the engine is
r u nning. Otherwise, this increases the risk
of an accident.

Driving
Interlock button
The interloc k but to n in the selector lever handle
prevents you from moving the selector lever i n­
advertently while in some se lector lever posi­
tions. The posit ions that require the interlock
button to be pressed a re marked in co lor in the il ­
lustration
c> fig. 71.
A WARNING
Read and follow all WARNINGS.¢.&. in Selec­
tor lever positions on page 64 .
(D Tips
- If the selector lever does not engage, there
is a malfunction . The eng ine is disabled to
prevent the vehicle from driving off unin­
te ntionally . To a llow the selector lever to
engage aga in , proceed as follows :
- Briefly press the b rake pedal.
- If the vehicle does not move forward or in
reverse even though a dr ive pos ition is se­
l ected, procee d as follows :
- >If the veh icle does not move in the des ired
direction, the system may not have engaged
the drive pos ition correctly . P ress the b rake
pedal and sel ect t he d rive posit ion again .
- >If the veh icle st ill does not move in the de­
s ir ed direction, there is a system malfunc­
tion. See a n authori zed Audi dea ler or au­
thori zed Audi Service Facili ty for assistance
to have t he sys te m c hecked.
Driving tips
The transmission shifts up and down automati ­
cally when in the driving gear s.

Starting on a hill
"' Set the parking brake .
"'With the driving gear selected, press the accel­
erator pedal carefully. The parking brake will
release automatically if your safety belt is fas­
tened .
Under certain circumstances, such as driving in
the mountains, it may be useful to switch tempo­
rarily to the manual shift program in order to
manually adjust the gears to the driving condi­
tions ¢
page 68.
When parking on a level surface, simply place the
selector lever in the P position. On inclines, acti­
vate the parking brake first and then move the selector lever to the P position ¢
page 62. This
prevents the locking mechanism from being
loaded too heavily and will make it easier to
move the selector lever out of the P position .
.8, WARNING
- The vehicle can roll even when the engine is
switched off.
- Unintended vehicle movement can lead to
serious injuries.
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear.
If you must leave
your vehicle when the engine is running, set
the parking brake and move the selector lev­
er to the P position.
- Power is still transferred to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To pre­
vent the vehicle from "creeping", you must keep your foot on the brake when the en­
gine is running and the selector lever is in
the D, Sor R position or "tiptronic" mode is
selected.
- Do not inadvertently press the accelerator
pedal when the vehicle is stationary. Other­
wise the vehicle will start to move immedi­ ately, even if the parking brake is set. This
could result in a crash.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when
changing the selector lever position while
the vehicle is stationary and the engine is running .
Driving
-Never engage the R or P selector level posi­
tions while driving. It could cause a crash.
- Before driving down a steep slope, reduce
your speed and shift into a lower gear with "ti ptronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
downhill. Constant braking causes the brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases brak­
ing distance or causes complete failure of
the brake system.
- If you must stop on an incline, always hold
the vehicle in place with the foot brake or
parking brake to prevent it from rolling
back .
- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with a
slipping clutch. The clutch opens automati­
cally when it becomes too hot from the
overload. The
mJ indicator light turns on
and a message appears ¢
page 70 when
the clutch is overloaded.
- If the engine must run while you are work­
ing in the engine compartment with the
hood open, make sure a gear is not engag­
ed. The selector lever must be firmly in the
P position and locked in place and the park­
ing brake must be set ¢
page 235. Other­
wise, the vehicle could begin moving when
increasing the engine speed, even with the
parking brake set .
(!) Note
- When stopping on an incline, do not try to
hold the vehicle in place by pressing the ac­
celerator pedal while a driving gear is se­

Driving - The transmission can overheat and be dam­
aged under certain driving and traffic condi­
tions such as frequent starts, creeping for a
long time, or stop -and-go traffic. When the

transmission cool

For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the driver
when driving down hills .
Hill descent control is ac tivated when the selec­
tor lever is in the Dor S position and you press
the brake pedal. The transmission automatically
selects a gear that is suitable for the hill. Hill de­
scent control tries to maintain the speed ach­
ieved at the time of braking, within physical and
technical limitations.
If may still be necessary to
adjust the speed with the brakes. Because hill de ­
scent control cannot shift down farther than 3rd
gear, it may be necessary to shift into tiptronic
mode in very steep areas. In this case, shift man­
ually into 1st or 2nd gear in tiptronic mode to
use the engine's braking force to relieve the
brakes .
Hill descent control switches off once the hill lev­
els out or you press the accelerator pedal.
On vehicles with a cruise control system*
¢ page 72, hill descent control is also activated
when the speed is set.
A WARNING
Hill descent control cannot overcome physical
limitations, so it may not be able to maintain
a constant speed under all conditions. Always
be ready to apply the brakes.
