If a locked driver door is opened without using theRKE transmitter, a ten second pre-alarm will occur.The horn will chirp and the lights will flash. If the key isnot placed in the ignition and turned to START or thedoor is not unlocked by pressing the unlock button onthe RKE transmitter during the ten second pre-alarm,the alarm will go off. Your vehicle's headlamps will flashand the horn will sound for about 30 seconds, then willturn off to save the battery power.
The theft-deterrent system will not activate if the doorsare locked with the vehicle's key or the manual doorlock. It activates only if you use the power door lockswitch with the door open or the RKE transmitter.You should also remember that you can start yourvehicle with the correct ignition key if the alarm hasbeen set off.
To avoid setting off the alarm by accident:
.If you do not want to activate the theft-deterrentsystem, the vehicle should be locked with the doorkey after the doors are closed.
.Always unlock the doors with the RKE transmitter.Unlocking a door any other way will set off thealarm if it is armed.
If you set off the alarm by accident, press unlock on theRKE transmitter or place the key in the ignition and turnit to START to turn off the alarm. The alarm will not stopif you try to unlock a door any other way.
Testing the Alarm
To test the alarm:
1. From inside the vehicle, lower the driver's windowand open the driver's door.
2. Activate the system by locking the doors with thepower door lock switch while the door is open,or with the RKE transmitter.
3. Get out of the vehicle, close the door and wait forthe security light to go out.
4. Then reach in through the window, unlock thedoor with the manual door lock and open the door.This should set off the alarm.
While the alarm is set, the power door unlock switch willnot work.
If the alarm does not sound when it should but theheadlamps flash, check to see if the horn works.The horn fuse may be blown. To replace the fuse, seeFuses and Circuit Breakers on page 7!108.
If the alarm does not sound or the headlamps donot flash, the vehicle should be serviced by yourdealer/retailer.

C (ON/RUN) :This position can be used to operate theelectrical accessories and to display some instrumentpanel cluster warning and indicator lights. The switchstays in this position when the engine is running.The transmission is also unlocked in this position onautomatic transmission vehicles.
If you leave the key in the ACC/ACCESSORY orON/RUN position with the engine off, the batterycould be drained. You may not be able to start thevehicle if the battery is allowed to drain for an extendedperiod of time.
D (START) :This is the position that starts the engine.When the engine starts, release the key. The ignitionswitch returns to ON/RUN for driving.
A warning tone will sound when the driver door isopened, the ignition is in ACC/ACCESSORY orLOCK/OFF and the key is in the ignition.
Retained Accessory Power (RAP)
The following vehicle accessories can be used for up to10 minutes after the engine is turned off:
.Audio System
.Power Windows
.OnStar®System (if equipped)
.Sunroof (if equipped)
These features work when the key is in ON/RUN orACC/ACCESSORY. Once the key is turned fromON/RUN to LOCK/OFF, the windows and sunroofcontinue to work up to 10 minutes until any door isopened. The radio continues to work for up to10 minutes or until the driver door is opened.

Starting the Engine
If the vehicle is a Two-mode Hybrid, see the Two-modeHybrid manual for more information.
Move the shift lever to P (Park) or N (Neutral). Theengine will not start in any other position. To restart theengine when the vehicle is are already moving, useN (Neutral) only.
Notice:Do not try to shift to P (Park) if thevehicle is moving. If you do, you could damagethe transmission. Shift to P (Park) only when thevehicle is stopped.
Starting Procedure
1. With your foot off the accelerator pedal, turn theignition key to START. When the engine starts,let go of the key. The idle speed will go down asthe engine gets warm. Do not race the engineimmediately after starting it. Operate the engineand transmission gently to allow the oil to warm upand lubricate all moving parts.
The vehicle has a Computer-Controlled CrankingSystem. This feature assists in starting the engineand protects components. If the ignition key isturned to the START position, and then releasedwhen the engine begins cranking, the engine willcontinue cranking for a few seconds or until thevehicle starts. If the engine does not start and thekey is held in START for many seconds, crankingwill be stopped after 15 seconds to preventcranking motor damage. To prevent gear damage,this system also prevents cranking if the engineis already running. Engine cranking can bestopped by turning the ignition switch to theACC/ACCESSORY or LOCK/OFF position.
Notice:Cranking the engine for long periods oftime, by returning the key to the START positionimmediately after cranking has ended, can overheatand damage the cranking motor, and drain thebattery. Wait at least 15 seconds between each try,to let the cranking motor cool down.

Torque Lock
If you are parking on a hill and you do not shift thetransmission into P (Park) properly, the weight of thevehicle can put too much force on the parking pawl inthe transmission. It might be difficult to pull the shiftlever out of P (Park). This is called torque lock. Toprevent torque lock, set the parking brake and then shiftinto P (Park) properly before you leave the driver seat.To find out how, seeShifting Into Park on page 3!39.
When you are ready to drive, move the shift lever out ofP (Park) before releasing the parking brake.
If torque lock does occur, you might need to haveanother vehicle push yours a little uphill to take some ofthe pressure from the parking pawl in the transmission.Then you should be able to pull the shift lever outof P (Park).
Shifting Out of Park
This vehicle is equipped with an electronic shift lockrelease system. The shift lock release is designed to:
.Prevent ignition key removal unless the shift leveris in P (Park) with the shift lever button fullyreleased, and
.Prevent movement of the shift lever out ofP (Park), unless the ignition is in ON/RUN orACC/ACCESSORY and the regular brake pedalis applied.
The shift lock release is always functional exceptin the case of an uncharged or low voltage(less than 9 volt) battery.
If the vehicle has an uncharged battery or a batterywith low voltage, try charging or jump starting thebattery. SeeJump Startingon page 7!44formore information.
To shift out of P (Park) use the following:
1. Apply the brake pedal.
2. Move the shift lever to the desired position.
If you still are unable to shift out of P (Park):
1. Ease the pressure on the shift lever.
2. While holding down the brake pedal, press theshift lever all the way into P (Park).
3. Move the shift lever to the desired position.
If you are still having a problem shifting, then have thevehicle serviced soon.

Most garage door openers sold before 1996 are FixedCode units.
Programming a garage door opener involvestime-sensitive actions, so read the entire procedurebefore starting. Otherwise, the device will time out andthe procedure will have to be repeated.
To program up to three devices:
1. To verify that the garage door opener is a FixedCode unit, remove the battery cover on the handheld transmitter supplied by the manufacturer ofthe garage door opener motor. If there are a rowof dip switches similar to the graphic above, thegarage door opener is a Fixed Code unit. If youdo not see a row of dip switches, return to theprevious section for Programming Universal HomeRemote–Rolling Code.

Exterior Lamps
The exterior lampscontrol is located on theinstrument panel to theleft of the steering wheel.
It controls the following systems:
.Headlamps
.Taillamps
.Parking Lamps
.License Plate Lamps
.Instrument Panel Lights
The exterior lamps control has four positions:
9(Off):Turns off the automatic headlamps anddaytime running lamps (DRL). Turning the headlampcontrol to the off position again will turn the automaticheadlamps or DRL back on.
For vehicles first sold in Canada, the off position onlyworks when the vehicle is shifted into the P (Park)position.
AUTO (Automatic) :Automatically turns on theheadlamps at normal brightness, together with thefollowing:
.Parking Lamps
.Instrument Panel Lights
.Taillamps
.License Plate Lamps
;(Parking Lamps) :Turns on the parking lampstogether with the following:

When the headlamps are turned on while the vehicle ison, the headlamps will turn off automatically 10 minutesafter the ignition is turned off. When the headlampsare turned on while the vehicle is off, the headlampswill stay on for 10 minutes before automaticallyturning off to prevent the battery from being drained.

Electric Power Management
The vehicle has Electric Power Management (EPM) thatestimates the battery's temperature and state of charge.It then adjusts the voltage for best performance andextended life of the battery.
When the battery's state of charge is low, the voltage israised slightly to quickly bring the charge back up.When the state of charge is high, the voltage is loweredslightly to prevent overcharging. If the vehicle has avoltmeter gage or a voltage display on the DriverInformation Center (DIC), you may see the voltagemove up or down. This is normal. If there is a problem,an alert will be displayed.
The battery can be discharged at idle if the electricalloads are very high. This is true for all vehicles. This isbecause the generator (alternator) may not be spinningfast enough at idle to produce all the power that isneeded for very high electrical loads.
A high electrical load occurs when several of thefollowing are on, such as: headlamps, high beams, foglamps, rear window defogger, climate control fan at highspeed, heated seats, engine cooling fans, trailer loads,and loads plugged into accessory power outlets.
EPM works to prevent excessive discharge of thebattery. It does this by balancing the generator's outputand the vehicle's electrical needs. It can increaseengine idle speed to generate more power, wheneverneeded. It can temporarily reduce the power demandsof some accessories.
Normally, these actions occur in steps or levels, withoutbeing noticeable. In rare cases at the highest levels ofcorrective action, this action may be noticeable to thedriver. If so, a Driver Information Center (DIC) messagemight be displayed, such as BATTERY SAVERACTIVE, BATTERY VOLTAGE LOW, or LOWBATTERY. If this message is displayed, it isrecommended that the driver reduce the electrical loadsas much as possible. SeeDIC Warnings and Messageson page 4!48.
Battery Run-Down Protection
This feature shuts off the dome lamps if they areleft on for more than 10 minutes when the ignition is inLOCK/OFF. This helps to prevent the battery fromrunning down.

Accessory Power Outlet(s)
The accessory power outlets let you plug in auxiliaryelectrical equipment, such as a cellular telephone.
The vehicle has three accessory power outlets located:
.Inside the floor console storage bin.
.On the rear of the floor console.
.In the rear cargo area on the passenger side.
To use an accessory power outlet, remove theprotective cap. When not in use, always cover theaccessory power outlet with the protective cap.
Certain power accessory plugs may not be compatibleto the accessory power outlet and could result in blownadapter or vehicle fuses. If you experience a problem,see your dealer/retailer for additional information on theaccessory power plugs.
The accessory power outlets are powered, even whenthe ignition is in LOCK/OFF. Continuing to use poweroutlets while the ignition is in LOCK/OFF may cause thevehicle's battery to run down.
Notice:Adding any electrical equipment to thevehicle can damage it or keep other componentsfrom working as they should. The repairs would notbe covered by the vehicle warranty. Do not useequipment exceeding maximum amperage rating of20 amperes. Check with your dealer/retailer beforeadding electrical equipment.
When adding electrical equipment, be sure to followthe proper installation instructions included with theequipment. Do not use equipment exceeding themaximum amperage rating of 20 amperes.
Notice:Improper use of the power outlet can causedamage not covered by the vehicle warranty. Do nothang any type of accessory or accessory bracketfrom the plug because the power outlets aredesigned for accessory power plugs only.

Emissions Inspection and Maintenance
Programs
Some state/provincial and local governments have ormight begin programs to inspect the emission controlequipment on the vehicle. Failure to pass thisinspection could prevent getting a vehicle registration.
Here are some things to know to help the vehicle passan inspection:
.The vehicle will not pass this inspection if thecheck engine light is on with the engine running,or if the key is in ON/RUN and the light is not on.
.The vehicle will not pass this inspection if theOBD II (on-board diagnostic) system determinesthat critical emission control systems have notbeen completely diagnosed by the system.The vehicle would be considered not ready forinspection. This can happen if the battery hasrecently been replaced or if the battery has rundown. The diagnostic system is designed toevaluate critical emission control systems duringnormal driving. This can take several days ofroutine driving. If this has been done and thevehicle still does not pass the inspection for lack ofOBD II system readiness, your dealer/retailer canprepare the vehicle for inspection.
Oil Pressure Light
{WARNING:
Do not keep driving if the oil pressure is low.
The engine can become so hot that it catches fire.
Someone could be burned. Check the oil as soon
as possible and have the vehicle serviced.
Notice:Lack of proper engine oil maintenance candamage the engine. The repairs would not becovered by the vehicle warranty. Always follow themaintenance schedule in this manual for changingengine oil.
This light comes on briefly while starting the engine.If it does not, have the vehicle serviced by yourdealer/retailer. If the system is working normally theindicator light then goes off.
