Front seat belts
T h e f r o n t s e a t b e l t s a r e fi t t e d w i t h
a p r e t e n s i o n i n g s y s t e m a n d f o r c e
limiter.

front seats in the event of a front
i m p a c t .
D e p e n d i n g o n t h e s e r i o u s n e s s o f t h e
i m p a c t , t h e p r e t e n s i o n i n g s y s t e m
instantly tightens the seat belt
a g a i n s t t h e b o d y o f t h e o c c u p a n t . Fastening
Pull the belt down in front of you
in a steady movement, making
sure that it does not become
twisted.
Press the fastening into its buckle.

Each belt has a reel that adjusts its
length automatically to the girth of
t h e s e a t o c c u p a n t .
T h e p r e t e n s i o n i n g s e a t b e l t s a r e
active when the ignition is on.
T h e f o r c e l i m i t e r r e d u c e s t h e p r e s -
sure of the seat belt against the
c h e s t o f t h e o c c u p a n t , s o i n c r e a s i n g
h i s p r o t e c t i o n .
Reactivation
These systems are reactivated au-
tomatically each time the ignition is
s w i t c h e d b a c k o n o r f r o m 3 0 m p h
(50 km/h).
Press the "ESP OFF" button again
to reactivate them manually.
Operating fault If this warning light comes
o n , a c c o m p a n i e d b y a n a u -
dible signal and a message
o n t h e m u l t i f u n c t i o n d i s p l a y ,
this indicates a malfunction of these
systems.
Have the systems checked by a
CITROËN dealer.
T h e E S P / A S R s y s t e m s o f f e r e x -
c e p t i o n a l s a f e t y i n n o r m a l d r i v i n g ,
but this should not encourage the

Height adjustment
T h e c o r r e c t p o s i t i o n i n g o f t h e s e a t
belt reel is around mid-shoulder
level.
T o a d j u s t t h e b e l t , p i n c h t h e c o n -
trol and slide it in the direction
required.
Unfastening
T o u n f a s t e n t h e b e l t , p r e s s o n
the red button in the buckle.
The belt retracts automatically when
not in use. Rear seat belts

Fastening
P u l l t h e s t r a p , t h e n i n s e r t t h e
tongue in the buckle.
Check that the seat belt is fas-
t e n e d c o r r e c t l y b y p u l l i n g t h e
s t r a p .
Unfastening
Press the red button on the
buckle.

T h e d r i v e r m u s t e n s u r e t h a t p a s s e n -
gers use the seat belts correctly and
that they are all restrained securely
before setting off.
Wherever you are seated in the ve-
hicle, always fasten your seat belt,
even for short journeys.
Do not invert the seat belt buckles
a s t h e y w i l l n o t f u l fi l t h e i r r o l e f u l l y .
T h e s e a t b e l t s a r e fi t t e d w i t h a n i n -
e r t i a r e e l p e r m i t t i n g a u t o m a t i c a d -
j u s t m e n t o f t h e l e n g t h o f t h e s t r a p
to your size. The seat belt is stored
automatically when not in use.
Before and after use, ensure that the
s e a t b e l t i s r o l l e d u p c o r r e c t l y .
T h e l o w e r p a r t o f t h e s t r a p m u s t b e
p o s i t i o n e d a s l o w a s p o s s i b l e o n t h e
p e l v i s .
T h e u p p e r p a r t m u s t b e p o s i t i o n e d
in the hollow of the shoulder.
T h e i n e r t i a r e e l s a r e fi t t e d w i t h a n a u -
tomatic locking device which comes
i n t o o p e r a t i o n i n t h e e v e n t o f a c o l l i -
sion, emergency braking or if the ve-
hicle rolls over. You can release the
d e v i c e b y p u l l i n g r a p i d l y o n t h e s t r a p
and releasing it. In order to be effective, a seat belt:
- must be tightened as close to the
b o d y a s p o s s i b l e ,
- m u s t r e s t r a i n o n e p e r s o n o f a d u l t size only,
- must not bear any trace of cuts or fraying,
- m u s t b e p u l l e d i n f r o n t o f y o u w i t h a smooth movement, checking
that it does not twist,
- must not be transformed or mod- i fi e d t o a v o i d a l t e r i n g i t s p e r f o r m -
ance. Recommendations for children
U s e a s u i t a b l e c h i l d s e a t i f t h e p a s -
senger is less than 12 years old or
s h o r t e r t h a n o n e m e t r e fi f t y .
Never use the same seat belt to se-
c u r e m o r e t h a n o n e p e r s o n .
N e v e r a l l o w a c h i l d t o t r a v e l o n y o u r l a p .
In accordance with current safety
r e g u l a t i o n s , a l l r e p a i r s a n d c h e c k s
must be carried out by a CITROËN
dealer who guarantees that the work
is carried out correctly.
Have your seat belts checked regu-
l a r l y b y a C I T R O Ë N d e a l e r a n d p a r -
t i c u l a r l y i f t h e s t r a p s s h o w s i g n s o f
damage.
C l e a n t h e s e a t b e l t s t r a p s w i t h s o a p y
w a t e r o r a t e x t i l e c l e a n i n g p r o d u c t ,
sold by CITROËN dealers.
After folding or moving a seat or rear
bench seat, ensure that the seat belt
i s p o s i t i o n e d a n d r o l l e d u p c o r r e c t l y .
Depending on the nature and se-
riousness of the impacts , t h e p r e -
tensioning device may be triggered
b e f o r e a n d i n d e p e n d e n t l y o f t h e a i r
b a g s . T r i g g e r i n g o f t h e p r e - t e n s i o n -
e r s i s a c c o m p a n i e d b y a s l i g h t d i s -
charge of harmless smoke and a
noise, due to the activation of the
p y r o t e c h n i c c a r t r i d g e i n c o r p o r a t e d
in the system.
In all cases, the air bag warning light
comes on.
F o l l o w i n g a n i m p a c t , h a v e t h e s e a t
belts system checked, and if neces-
s a r y r e p l a c e d , b y a C I T R O Ë N d e a l e r .

AIR BAGS
S y s t e m d e s i g n e d t o m a x i m i s e
t h e s a f e t y o f t h e o c c u p a n t s ( w i t h
t h e e x c e p t i o n o f t h e r e a r c e n t r e
p a s s e n g e r ) i n t h e e v e n t o f v i o l e n t
c o l l i s i o n s . I t s u p p l e m e n t s t h e a c t i o n
of the force-limiting seat belts.
If a collision occurs, the electronic
detectors record and analyse the
f r o n t a n d s i d e i m p a c t s s u s t a i n e d i n
t h e i m p a c t d e t e c t i o n z o n e s :
- i n t h e c a s e o f a s e r i o u s i m p a c t , the air bags are triggered instant-
l y a n d p r o t e c t t h e o c c u p a n t s o f
t h e v e h i c l e ( w i t h t h e e x c e p t i o n o f
t h e r e a r c e n t r e p a s s e n g e r ) ; i m -
m e d i a t e l y a f t e r t h e i m p a c t , t h e
a i r b a g s d e fl a t e r a p i d l y s o t h a t
they do not hinder visibility or the
e x i t o f t h e o c c u p a n t s ,
- in the case of a minor or rear im- p a c t o r i n c e r t a i n r o l l - o v e r c o n -
ditions, the air bags will not be
t r i g g e r e d ; t h e s e a t b e l t a l o n e i s
s u f fi c i e n t t o p r o v i d e o p t i m u m
p r o t e c t i o n i n t h e s e s i t u a t i o n s .
The air bags do not operate when
the ignition is switched off.
T h i s e q u i p m e n t w i l l o n l y o p e r a t e
o n c e . I f a s e c o n d i m p a c t o c c u r s ( d u r -
ing the same or a subsequent acci-

Triggering of the air bag(s) is ac-
c o m p a n i e d b y a s l i g h t e m i s s i o n o f
harmless smoke and a noise, due to
t h e a c t i v a t i o n o f t h e p y r o t e c h n i c c a r -
t r i d g e i n c o r p o r a t e d i n t h e s y s t e m .
This smoke is not harmful, but sen-
s i t i v e i n d i v i d u a l s m a y e x p e r i e n c e
slight irritation.
The noise of the detonation may
result in a slight loss of hearing for
a short time. Front air bags

g e r i n t h e e v e n t o f a f r o n t i m p a c t .

t h e f r o n t p a s s e n g e r ' s a i r b a g i s i n -
c o r p o r a t e d i n t h e f a s c i a a b o v e t h e
g l o v e b o x .
Activation
The air bags are triggered simultane-
o u s l y , u n l e s s t h e p a s s e n g e r ' s f r o n t
air bag is disarmed, in the event of
a s e r i o u s f r o n t i m p a c t a p p l i e d t o a l l
o r p a r t o f t h e f r o n t i m p a c t z o n e
A ,
in the longitudinal centreline of the
v e h i c l e o n a h o r i z o n t a l p l a n e a n d d i -
rected from the front to the rear of
the vehicle.
T h e f r o n t a i r b a g i n fl a t e s b e t w e e n
t h e f r o n t o c c u p a n t o f t h e v e h i c l e a n d
the fascia to cushion his forward
movement.

Deactivation
This warning light comes on
o n t h e r o o f c o n s o l e d i s p l a y
when the ignition is on and
until the air bag is re-armed.
To guarantee the safety of your child,
i t i s i m p e r a t i v e t h a t t h e p a s s e n g e r
air bag is disarmed when you install
a "rearwards-facing" child seat on
t h e f r o n t p a s s e n g e r s e a t .
Otherwise, the child would risk be-
ing seriously injured or killed if the
air bag were triggered. Activation
When you remove the child seat,
turn switch
1 to the "ON" p o s i t i o n t o
re-arm the air bag and so guarantee
t h e s a f e t y o f y o u r f r o n t p a s s e n g e r i n
t h e e v e n t o f a n i m p a c t .
Operating fault
I f t h i s s y m b o l a p p e a r s o n
t h e i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l d i s -
p l a y , a c c o m p a n i e d b y a n
audible warning and a mes-
sage, contact a CITROËN dealer to
have the system checked. The air
bags may no longer be triggered in
t h e e v e n t o f a s e r i o u s i m p a c t .
O n l y t h e f r o n t p a s s e n g e r ' s a i r b a g
can be disarmed:
with the ignition off , insert the
k e y i n t h e p a s s e n g e r a i r b a g d i s -
arming switch 1 ,
turn it to the "OFF" p o s i t i o n ,
t h e n , r e m o v e t h e k e y k e e p i n g
t h e s w i t c h i n t h i s p o s i t i o n . I f t h i s w a r n i n g l i g h t fl a s h e s ,
contact a CITROËN dealer.
If both air bag warning lights come
on continuously, do not install a
"rearwards-facing" child seat on
t h e f r o n t p a s s e n g e r s e a t .

For the air bags to be fully
effective, observe the following

Do not leave anything between the

o c c u p a n t s .
After an accident or if the vehicle
has been stolen or broken into, have
the air bag systems checked.
All work on the air bag system is
strictly forbidden unless it is carried
o u t b y q u a l i fi e d p e r s o n n e l o f t h e
CITROËN network.
E v e n i f a l l o f t h e p r e c a u t i o n s m e n -
tioned are observed, a risk of injury
or of minor burns to the head, chest
or arms when an air bag is triggered
c a n n o t b e r u l e d o u t . T h e b a g i n fl a t e s
almost instantly (within a few mil-
l i s e c o n d s ) t h e n d e fl a t e s w i t h i n t h e
same time discharging the hot gas
v i a o p e n i n g s p r o v i d e d f o r t h i s p u r -

Do not drive holding the steering
w h e e l b y i t s s p o k e s o r r e s t i n g y o u r
h a n d s o n t h e c e n t r e p a r t o f t h e
wheel.

necessary. Curtain air bags

This could cause injury to the head if
the curtain air bag is triggered.
Do not remove the grab handles in-
s t a l l e d o n t h e r o o f , t h e y p l a y a p a r t
in securing the curtain air bags.

may not be triggered.
The air bag is not triggered in the
event of a rear or front collision.
I f t h i s s y m b o l a p p e a r s o n
t h e i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l d i s p l a y ,
a c c o m p a n i e d b y a n a u d i b l e
signal and a message, con-
tact a CITROËN dealer to have the
system checked. The air bags may
no longer be triggered in the event

D R I V I N G
MANUAL PARKING BRAKE
Mechanical device for immobilising
the vehicle when stationary. This warning lamp comes
on if the parking brake is en-
gaged or not fully released.
If the parking brake is released,
the lighting of this warning lamp
along with the STOP warning lamp
