CAUTION: Crankshaft position sensor must be flat against cylinder
block before tightening crankshaft position sensor retaining
bolt, or crankshaft position sensor may be damaged.
2) Ensure crankshaft position sensor is flat against cylinder
block. Install and tighten crankshaft position sensor retaining bolt
to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
3) To install remaining components, reverse removal
procedure. Ensure NEW plastic tie is installed through hole on side of
cylinder block to secure wiring harness.

1) Fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator is mounted in rubber
grommet on top of fuel pump module. See Figs. 27-30. Fuel pump module
is located on top of fuel tank.
2) Manufacturer recommends removing fuel tank for access to
fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator. See FUEL TANK. Ensure area around
fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump module is clean.
CAUTION: When removing fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator from fuel
tank, DO NOT pull fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator more
than 3.0" (76 mm) from fuel tank or plastic fuel line
attached to fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator may be
damaged.
3) Using twisting motion, pull fuel filter/fuel pressure
regulator from rubber grommet on fuel pump module. Ensure fuel
filter/fuel pressure regulator is not pulled more than 3.0" (76 mm)
from fuel tank or plastic fuel line attached to fuel filter/fuel
pressure regulator may be damaged.
4) Carefully cut plastic fuel line-to-fuel filter/fuel
pressure regulator retaining clamp. Use care not to damage plastic
fuel line. Remove retaining clamp. Remove plastic fuel line from fuel
filter/fuel pressure regulator.
Installation
1) Install plastic fuel line with NEW retaining clamp on fuel
filter/fuel pressure regulator. Rotate fuel filter/fuel pressure
regulator in plastic fuel line until fuel line fitting on side fuel
filter/fuel pressure regulator points proper direction. See
POSITIONING FUEL FILTER/FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR table.

CAUTION: Ensure Crimping Pliers (C-4124) are used to crimp retaining
clamp for plastic fuel line. DO NOT use conventional side
cutters to crimp retaining clamp.
2) Using Crimping Pliers (C-4124), crimp retaining clamp for\
plastic fuel line. Ensure plastic fuel line is securely attached on
fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator.
3) To install remaining components, reverse removal
procedure. Ensure fuel filter/pressure regulator is installed in
rubber grommet on fuel pump module so fuel line fitting on side fuel
filter/fuel pressure regulator points toward proper direction before
installing fuel tank. See POSITIONING FUEL FILTER/FUEL PRESSURE
REGULATOR table. Reinstall fuel tank using proper procedure.

pump to drain the fuel tank, go to next step.
2) Disconnect fuel line from fuel rail. See FUEL LINE AT FUEL
RAIL. Connect Fuel Hose (6541, 6539, 6631 or 6923) for proper engine
application at fuel line fitting on fuel rail. Place remaining end of
fuel hose in an approved gasoline container.
3) Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is a
16-pin connector attached to bottom of driver's side of the instrument
panel, just straight above the accelerator pedal. Using scan tool
manufacturer's instructions, activate the fuel pump and pump fuel from
fuel tank. Once fuel tank is empty, remove scan tool. Reinstall fuel
line on fuel rail using proper procedure. Go to step 5).
4) Release fuel pressure from fuel system. See FUEL SYSTEM
PRESSURE RELEASE. Ensure negative battery cable is disconnected.
Remove fuel tank cap to release any residual fuel tank pressure.
5) Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect the small vent hose
from fill and vent hose fitting assembly at driver's side frame rail.
Fill and vent hose fitting assembly is permanently attached on fuel
tank. See Fig. 30.
6) If fuel tank was previously drained, go to next step. If
fuel tank was not previously drained, siphon fuel from fuel tank into
an approved gasoline container by installing siphon hose in small vent
hose fitting on fill and vent hose fitting assembly. Go to next step.
7) Disconnect large fill hose from fill and vent hose fitting
assembly at driver's side frame rail. Fill and vent hose fitting
assembly is permanently attached on fuel tank. See Fig. 30.
8) Support fuel tank with transmission jack. Remove fuel tank
strap retaining nuts from L-shaped bolts securing fuel tank straps on
frame rail. Remove fuel tank straps.
CAUTION: Fill and vent hose fitting assembly must be released from
plastic shield before lowering fuel tank. Use care when
lowering fuel tank as not to damage fill and vent hose
fitting assembly or the fuel tank.
9) Fill and vent hose fitting assembly is permanently
attached on fuel tank and is protected from the frame by a plastic
shield. See Fig. 30. Push retaining tabs inward to release fill and
vent hose fitting assembly from the plastic shield before lowering the
fuel tank. See Fig. 38.

10) Slightly lower fuel tank while guiding fill and vent hose

WARNING: Wait about 2 minutes after disconnecting negative battery
cable before servicing air bag system. System reserve
capacitor maintains air bag system voltage for about 2
minutes after battery is disconnected. Servicing air bag
system before 2 minutes may cause accidental air bag
deployment and possible personal injury.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
WARNING: All models are equipped with Air Bag Restraint System (ABRS).
See AIR BAG PRECAUTIONS before working on vehicle. Use
caution when working around steering column (air bag could
deploy).
CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory
systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist
until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See
COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION
before disconnecting battery.
HORN PAD & STEERING WHEEL
Removal & Installation
1) Disable air bag system. See AIR BAG DISABLING. Ensure
steering wheel is in straight-ahead position. Remove nuts mounting air
bag module to steering wheel. Remove screws securing cruise control
switch to steering wheel (if equipped).
2) Disconnect wiring connectors. Remove air bag module and
cruise control switch assembly. Pry trim covers from back of steering
wheel and remove horn switch mounting screws. Disconnect horn wires.
Remove horn switch.
3) Remove steering wheel retaining nut. Reference mark
steering wheel and steering shaft. Using puller, remove steering
wheel. To install, reverse removal procedure. Align marks made during
removal. Tighten steering wheel retaining nut to specification.
STEERING COLUMN
Removal & Installation
1) Position front wheels straight ahead. Disconnect and
isolate negative battery cable. On column shift models, remove link
rod from bushing in shift lever. Discard bushing. On all models,
remove steering wheel using Puller (C-3428-B). See HORN PAD & STEERING\
WHEEL.
2) Remove steering column shaft-to-coupler retaining pin.
Push upper coupler shaft down into lower steering coupler. Remove dash
panel column cover. On column shift models, disconnect shift indicator
cable.
3) On all models, remove tilt lever (if equipped). Remove
upper and lower shroud. Remove lower fixed shroud. Disconnect
multifunction switch harness connector. Disconnect harness connectors
from ignition switch, key-in light, horn and cruise control (if
equipped).
4) Loosen upper support bracket nuts and allow column to drop
slightly. Remove upper fixed shroud. Disconnect wiring harness
retainers from column, and move harness to one side. Remove lower dash
panel. Remove lower steering column nuts. Remove column.
CAUTION: DO NOT reuse bushing in shift rod lever once shift rod is
removed. Always install a NEW bushing.
5) To install column, reverse removal procedure. Connect

1998-99 DRIVE AXLES
CHRY - 4WD Steering Knuckles
Ram Pickup
DESCRIPTION
Open type steering knuckles are used on all models. Open type
knuckles provide sharper turning angle, decreasing turning radius.
Axle shafts are free floating. Steering knuckles are attached to axle
housing by ball joints.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
REMOVAL
1) Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheels. Remove brake
caliper, and support aside. DO NOT allow caliper to hang by brake
hose. On one ton models, remove adapter hub bolts and hub from rotor
and hub assembly. On all models, remove cotter pin from rotor and hub
nut.
2) Remove rotor and hub nut. Remove bolts securing rotor and
hub assembly to steering knuckle. Bolts are accessible from inboard
side of steering knuckle. Remove rotor and hub assembly. Remove hub
spacer from steering knuckle. Note spacer position for installation
reference.
3) Disconnect tie rod end and drag link studs. Remove anti-
lock brake sensor from steering knuckle. Remove ball joint cotter pins
and nuts. Discard lower nut. Using a soft-face hammer, tap steering
knuckle to free it from ball joints.
4) Clean all components with solvent, and dry with compressed
air. Inspect all parts for burrs, chips, wear, flat spots or cracks.
Replace all damaged or worn parts.
INSTALLATION
NOTE: When aligning upper ball joint nut to install cotter pin,
always tighten nut to align holes. Never loosen nut to align
holes.
1) Position steering knuckle on ball joints, and install NEW
lower ball joint nut. Tighten nut to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS. Install upper ball joint nut, and tighten to
specification. Tighten, DO NOT loosen, nut to install NEW cotter pin.
2) Install hub bearing and axle shaft. Connect drag link stud
to steering knuckle arm. Install retaining nut, and tighten to
specification. Install NEW cotter pin. Connect tie rod end stud to
steering knuckle arm. Install retaining nut and tighten to
specification. Install NEW cotter pin. Install anti-lock brake sensor
to steering knuckle.
3) Apply anti-seize compound to splines of front drive axle.
Inspect hub grease seal and wheel bearing. Replace as necessary. From
rear of steering knuckle, install 2 rearward rotor and hub assembly
bolts in steering knuckle.
4) Apply chassis grease to hub spacer to secure on steering
knuckle. Position spacer on rotor and hub assembly bolts. Ensure
spacer is installed with flat edge toward rear of vehicle. Apply
Loctite to rotor and hub assembly bolt threads. Install rotor and hub

MANUAL TRANSMISSION
NOTE: For manual transmission replacement procedures, see
appropriate article in CLUTCHES.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
DAKOTA & DURANGO
Removal
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support
vehicle. Disconnect and remove necessary skid plates and exhaust
components for transmission removal. Remove engine-to-transmission
struts (if equipped). These struts are located between front of
transmission and engine.
2) Ensure area around transmission oil cooler lines fitting
are clean. Disengage retainer on quick-disconnect cooler line fitting.
Pull cooler line from transmission oil cooler.
CAUTION: Crankshaft position sensor must be removed from transmission
housing before removing transmission to prevent damage to
crankshaft position sensor.
3) Remove starter. Disconnect electrical connector for
crankshaft position sensor. On 2.5L, crankshaft position sensor is
mounted on driver's side of transmission housing. See Fig. 1. On 3.9L,
5.2L and 5.9L, crankshaft position sensor is mounted on passenger's
side of transmission housing. See Fig. 2.
4) Remove crankshaft position sensor bolts or nuts. Remove
crankshaft position sensor from transmission housing. Remove dipstick,
dipstick tube and "O" ring from transmission.
5) Remove torque converter cover. Place reference mark on
flexplate and torque converter for installation reference. Rotate
crankshaft clockwise and remove torque converter bolts.
6) Place reference mark on drive shaft flanges for
installation reference. Remove drive shaft from transmission. On 4WD
models, disconnect drive shaft from transfer case. Disconnect shift
rod for transfer case from transfer case shift lever.
7) On all models, disconnect necessary control cables, wiring
harnesses, and shift linkage or cable from transmission. Support rear
of engine with jack stand. Using transmission jack, slightly raise
transmission to release pressure from rear mount and rear crossmember.
8) Remove bolts securing rear support and rear mount to
transmission and rear crossmember. Raise transmission slightly. Slide
exhaust hanger arm from bracket on rear support. Remove rear support
and rear mount.
9) Remove rear crossmember located below the transmission. On
4WD models, disconnect electrical connectors from transfer case. On

Installation
1) To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure torque
converter is fully seated in transmission by measuring distance from
cylinder block surface on transmission housing to front edge on torque
converter bolt lug on front of torque converter. Distance should be .
50" (12.7 mm) if torque converter is fully seated.
CAUTION: Proper length torque converter bolts must be used. If
replacing any torque converter bolts, ensure proper length
bolt is used.
2) Tighten bolt/nuts to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS. Ensure reference mark on torque converter and
flexplate, and drive shaft flanges are aligned. Adjust shift cable or
linkage, throttle valve cable and transfer case shift linkage if
necessary. See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - TRUCKS & RWD VANS article.
3) Use NEW "O" ring when installing dipstick tube. Before
installing oil cooler lines on transmission, ensure all fittings are
clean. Install oil cooler line into quick-disconnect fitting. Push oil
cooler line inward until a click is heard. Pull on oil cooler line to
ensure oil cooler line is locked in place. Fill transmission with
Mopar ATF Plus Type 7176.
RAM PICKUP
Removal
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support
vehicle. Disconnect and remove necessary skid plates and exhaust
components for transmission removal. Remove engine-to-transmission
struts (if equipped). These struts are located between front of
transmission and engine.
2) Ensure area around transmission oil cooler lines fitting
are clean. Disengage retainer on quick-disconnect cooler line fitting.
Pull cooler line from transmission oil cooler. Remove starter.
CAUTION: On 3.9L, 5.2L and 5.9L gasoline models, crankshaft position
sensor must be removed from transmission housing before
removing transmission to prevent damage to crankshaft
position sensor.
3) On 3.9L, 5.2L and 5.9L gasoline models, disconnect
electrical connector for crankshaft position sensor. Crankshaft
position sensor is mounted on passenger's side of transmission
housing. See Fig. 2.
4) Remove crankshaft position sensor bolts. Remove crankshaft
position sensor from transmission housing. Remove dipstick, dipstick
tube and "O" ring from transmission.
5) Remove torque converter cover. Place reference mark on
flexplate and torque converter for installation reference. Rotate
crankshaft clockwise and remove torque converter bolts.
6) Place reference mark on drive shaft flanges for
installation reference. Remove drive shaft from transmission. On 4WD
models, disconnect drive shaft from transfer case. Disconnect shift
rod for transfer case from transfer case shift lever.
7) On all models, disconnect necessary control cables, wiring
harnesses, and shift linkage from transmission. Support rear of engine
with jack stand. Using transmission jack, slightly raise transmission
to release pressure from rear mount and rear crossmember.
8) Remove bolts securing rear support and rear mount to
transmission and rear crossmember. Raise transmission slightly. Slide
exhaust hanger arm from bracket on rear support. Remove rear support

Dakota & Durango
1) Raise and support vehicle. Ensure shift lever is in Park.
Release shift cable adjuster lock. Shift cable adjuster lock is
located on shift cable, just below brake booster.
2) Disconnect shift cable from transmission shift lever on
transmission. Ensure transmission is still in Park by rotating
transmission shift lever fully toward rear of vehicle to Park detent.
3) Verify parking sprag on transmission is engaged by
attempting to rotate drive shaft. Install shift cable on transmission
shift lever. Lock shift cable in place by pressing shift cable
adjuster lock downward until it snaps into place.
4) To verify proper adjustment, check that engine only starts
with shift lever in Park and Neutral. If engine starts in any other
gears except Park or Neutral, shift cable may be improperly adjusted
or park/neutral position switch may be defective.
Ram Van/Wagon
1) Raise and support vehicle. Ensure shift lever is in Park.
Unsnap shift cable from ball at transmission shift lever on
transmission. See Fig. 6.
2) Check that transmission is still in Park by rotating
transmission shift lever fully toward rear of vehicle to Park detent
position. Release cable adjuster at transmission end of shift cable to
unlock shift cable. See Fig. 6. Snap shift cable back on ball at
transmission shift lever. Press cable lock inward to secure shift
cable.
3) To verify proper adjustment, ensure engine only starts
with shift lever in Park and Neutral. Shift lever should not move from
Park when ignition switch is in LOCK position. Shift lever should move
from Park when ignition switch is in any position except LOCK
position.

simultaneously when throttle is depressed. If both levers to do not
move simultaneously, readjust throttle valve cable.
TRANSFER CASE SHIFT LINKAGE
Dakota
1) Place transfer case shift lever in 4L position. Use wire
or bungie cord to secure transfer case shift lever in 4L position.
Raise and support vehicle. Loosen lock bolt at adjusting swivel on
shift rod. See Fig. 8. Ensure shift rod slides freely in adjusting
swivel. If shift rod fails to slide freely in adjusting swivel,
lubricate shift rod as necessary.
2) Ensure shift lever on transfer case is still in 4L
position. Ensure pin on end of adjusting swivel is centered in hole on
shift arm. Tighten lock bolt. With all wheels off floor, start engine
and shift transfer case through all ranges to ensure proper operation.
3) Ensure pin on end of adjusting swivel is centered in hole
on shift arm. Tighten lock bolt. With all wheels off floor, start
engine and shift transfer case through all ranges to ensure proper
operation.

Ram Pickup
1) Place transfer case shift lever in 2H position. Use wire

or bungie cord to secure transfer case shift lever in 2H position.
2) Raise and support vehicle. Loosen lock bolt at adjusting
swivel on shift rod. See Fig. 8. Ensure shift rod slides freely in
adjusting swivel. If shift rod fails to slide freely in adjusting
swivel, lubricate shift rod as necessary.
3) Ensure shift lever on transfer case is still in 2H
position. Tighten lock bolt. With all wheels off floor, start engine
and shift transfer case through all ranges to ensure proper operation.
